1. Professional forestry education came in to existence for the first time in the State of Telangana in the

year 2016 with the vision of Hon’ble Chief Minister Sri. K. Chandrashekar Rao, though ICAR issued

policy guidelines on Forestry education in 1986 itself.

2. The first academic year has began in the year 2016 and the first batch of B.Sc.(Hons.) Forestry will

graduate in 2020

3. Forest College and Research Institute, Hyderabad (FCRI) has strength of 200 under graduate stu-

dents in 1st, 3rd, 5th and 7th semesters of 4 year B.Sc. (Hons.) Forestry course. It is a compulsory

residential course

4. M.Sc. Forestry shall commence at FCRI from the year 2020 and Ph.D. Forestry from the year 2022.

Campus will have 326 students strength at full operational level

5. Admission in to B.Sc. Forestry at FCRI is through EAMCET merit.

6. There are 7 departments in FCRI viz., 1. Silviculture and Agro-forestry, 2. Natural Resource Manage-

ment and Conservation, 3. Wildlife and Habitat Management, 4. Forest Products and Utilization,

5. Tree breeding and Improvement, 6. Forest Ecology and Climate Science, 7. Basic and Social Sciences.

7. A total of 118 staff strength is sanctioned, out of them 66 are Regular staff including 49 faculty

members and 52 outsourcing staff members. Based on the requirement, the services are engaged in

a progressive manner.

8. FCRI is currently functional with 16 regular Faculty members 5 office staff on deputation and

15 outsourcing staff. Faculty selection is done by TSPSC. FCRI is temporarily operating from TSFA

Dulapally Campus.

9. Administrative sanction is given for infrastructure and facilities development with an outlay of

Rs 75 crore and construction works are taken up by TSPHCL.

10. The facilities include Administrative block, College building with 9 classrooms and 14 Laboratories,

7 departments, Men and Women Hostels, Kitchen and Dining block, Museum, Library, Herbarium,

Central Instrumentation Facility, 43 Staff quarters, protection wall and other infrastructure including

internal roads, pipelines, entry gate etc.

11. Eligible students are extended financial support through summer internships, State Government

(TS ePASS) and other Scholarships

12. Student counseling is provided by assigning a teacher counselor, for a group of students, to guide and

motivate student for overall development

13. The faculty are sent for trainings in FCRI Mettupalyam, NAARM Rajendranagar, and ICFRE Dehradun and

have also participated in workshops held at FCRI with the faculty from Auburn University, Alabama.

(USA) and University of British Columbia, (Canada).

14. A month long student and faculty interaction is held by the Dr. Suzelle, faculty from University of

British Columbia at FCRI Hyderabad

15. Students are taken for Study Tour to see different types of ecosystems, various protected areas and

also Forest Research institutions across the country - IIFM Bhopal, ICFRE, WII and FSI in Dehradun,

TFRI Jabalpur, Kaziranga National park, Keloladeo National park, Bharathpur, Bandipur sanctuary,

Tadoba tiger reserve, IWST Benguluru, FCRI Mettupalyam etc apart from state Tour of Telangana

16. FCRI students are motivated to take on competitive examinations inspired by the B.Sc. Forestry

graduate fraternity who made in to All India Services. The students were also taught by 2017 batch

IPS trainee and 2019 All India IFS topper for a total duration of 6 months

17. FCRI study circle is opened and a faculty is kept in charge to guide our students for higher education

and competitive examinations

18. A faculty is appointed as coordinator to oversee various clubs activities and students are excelling in

extracurricular activities as well.

19. The senior expert faculties from FCRI Mettupalyam, Kerala Forestry college and Karnataka Forest

college are invited as visiting Faculty to take classes for students

20. Many workshops were organized by inviting experts in various fields for providing insights into estab-

lishment of Library, Museum, Laboratories, Research areas and faculty recruitment etc at FCRI Mulugu.

21. MoUs were signed with various institutions working in Forestry and allied subject for networking in

knowledge sharing and to collaborate in research. These include CCMB, CRIDA, IFGTB-Coimbattore,

IFB- Hyderabad, Auburn University (USA) etc.

22. NSS unit started functioning by taking up various programs like Pacchatoranam, Blood donation,

Swatchha Bharath and Telaganaku Haritha Haram. Students are awarded credits for this in curriculum.

23. Participation in physical training (morning) and sports (evening) is must and is part of curriculum.

FCRI students participated in many sports competitions organized at various levels. V. Kailash an UG

student at FCRI has won silver medal in 400 m event at 2019 state level athletic meet.

24. Students in groups of five are sent for 15 days NGO Attachment for village stay in NABARD sponsored

10 watershed projects in the state.

25. Students are sent for 3 weeks Industrial Attachment in Forest based industries like ITC paper mills,

SPM, SCCL, Nurseries and Wood based industries.

26. Students in groups of five have also spent 45 days in Range Attachment, learning the forest skills

on field.

27. Faculty members shares the responsibilities in various administrative functions of the organization

like Hostel Wardens, Batch Coordinators, NSS coordinator, Club coordinators, Counseling etc.

28. The controller of Examination ensures smooth conduction of examinations and results are declared

on time.

29. A proposal for declaring FCRI as University as first of its kind in India. On recommendation of the

Governing board of FCRI, the EFS & T Department has forwarded the proposal to the Government

for approval.

30. On approval of the Governing board, job quota in the direct recruitment for the ACF (25 %), FRO (50%)

and FSO (50%) is forwarded by EFS & T Department to the Government along with the justification

report for approval.

2 INTRODUCTION

FCRI Hyderabad, the brain child of our visionary Chief Minister Sri. K Chandrashekar Rao, is established in

the year 2016. Located at Forest Research Centre Mulugu in Siddipet district, about 50 km from the city

of Hyderabad, FCRI provides world class facilities and opportunities to its students. At present, FCRI has

200 students pursuing B.Sc. (Forestry) course, which is a 4 year residential course and the first batch will

graduate in April, 2020.

The Government of Telangana issued orders for establishment of “FOREST COLLEGE & RESEARCH

INSTITUTE (FCRI) vide G.O.Ms.No.51, dated 09-10-2015, EFS&T Department. The admissions are com-

pleted for the Academic year 2016, 2017, 2018 & 2019. The campus initially operated from Telangana

State Forest Academy. The new institution came up in Forest Research Centre Mulugu in Siddipet district.

The FCRI is being run by the State Forest Department and managed by the Governing Board and Academ-

ic council constituted by the Govt. FCRI is an affiliated college of the Osmania University. However the

course design and other academic procedures are followed based on ICAR guidelines. The annual intake

of students is specified in different courses is as follows:

4 GOVERNING BOARD AND ACADEMIC COUNCIL

The Governing Board and Academic Council are constituted Vide GO. Ms. No. 07 dated 18-03-2016 of EFS & T Department. So far the Governing board met 6 times and Academic council met 4 times to guide the functioning of FCRI.

• The Board shall be responsible for the conduct of all administrative affairs of the Forest College and

Research Institute, Mulugu, Siddipet District.

• Without prejudice to the generality of the foregoing powers, the board shall exercise and perform the

following powers and functions.

(i) To approve the annual, revised or supplementary budget estimates, annual report of the Institute together with the annual accounts of income and expenditure of the Institute.

(ii) To provide for the administration of any funds placed at the disposal of the Forest College and Research Institute for the purpose intended.

(iii) To consider and approve the recommendations of the Academic Council.

(iv) To consider and recommend for the creation of new departments, new faculties and research centres on the recommendation of the Academic Council as the case may be.

(v) To determine and regulate all the policies relating to the affairs of the institute, in accordance with the rules and regulations of the affiliated University and Government.

(vi) To appoint such committees either standing or adhoc as the Board may consider necessary.

(vii) To approve agreements, Contracts and documents on behalf of the Institute and vary and rescind such agreements, contracts and documents.

(viii) The Board may for purpose of consultation invite any person having practical experience or special knowledge of any subject to attend its meeting. A person attending such meeting shall be entitled to such allowances as may be prescribed.

ACADEMIC COUNCIL FUNCTIONS

(i) The Academic Council shall, subject to provisions of the Act and statues of University and Board of studies in Forestry, University shall have power of prescribing syllabus, course structure and scheme of examination and evaluation of the Institute.

(ii) To make recommendations regarding rules and regulations in consistence with the provisions of the Act and statues of University and as well as ICAR regulations relating to all academic matters for the maintenance of standards.

(iii) To make recommendations for the Constitution or Re-Constitution of Departments/Faculties of teaching of the Institute.

(vi) To make recommendations regarding the admission of students to the Institute and determine the number of students to be admitted in each course offered by the Institute.

(v) To make recommendations and advice on the matters relating to management of libraries and laboratories establishment.

(vi) To recommend the qualifications for teaching and laboratories staff.

(vii) To make rules and regulations to the conduct of examinations and to maintain and improve standards of education.

(viii) To exercise such other powers and perform such other functions as may be prescribed.

The Academic Council vide its first meeting held on 02-04-2016 suggested establishment of following

6 INFRASTRUCTURE AND FACILITIES

The government vide G.O.Rt.No.118, dated 31-08-2016 & G.O.Rt.No.173, dated 31-08-2017 of EFS &T

Department had given administrative sanction of Rs. 75 crore for developing infrastructure through

FACULTY MEMBERS

TSPSC has been authorized by government for the recruitment vide G.O. Ms. No.110 dated 08-09-2016

by Finance(HRM-VII) Departmentt, based on recommended faculty positions in various departments by

Academic council and Governing Board. TSPSC has completed recruitment for the posts earmarked for

first 3 years. Total (30) posts were notified and (14) faculty members were required and are presently

working including the Librarian. TSPSC has recruited one Professor, one Associate Professor and 11 As-

sistant Professors and a Librarian. In addition, 9 contract faculties are permitted by Government. The 15

faculty members bring the educational experiences from 16 institutions in the country.

13 STUDENT READY PROGRAM

Student READY (Rural and Entrepreneurship Awareness Development Yojana) to reorient students of B.Sc. Forestry for ensuring and assuring employability and to develop entrepreneurs. This module en-sures hands on experience and practical training. The following components, which are interactive and are conceptualized for building skills in project development an execution, decision-making, individual and team coordination, approach to problem solving,accounting, quality control, marketing and resolv-ing conflicts, etc. with end to end approach are implemented at Forest College and Research Institute, Mulugu. ICAR’s 5th Dean Committee recommended following 5 components:

i. Production and Marketing of High Value Forest Produce ii. Raising Quality Planting Material for Forest Regeneration iii. Apiculture/Sericulture iv. Ecotourism v. Wild Animal Health Management

Experiential Learning: Implemented in V and VI Semester. This program includes skill development and hands experience together termed as Student Ready Project (SRPs). The following modules were practiced to fulfill the above recommendations of ICAR’s 5th Dean Committee.

Students Projects: Implemented in VII Semester: This course provides students an understanding of the principles and procedures of the experimental design, layout, analysis and interpretation of data and technical writing. SOUTH INDIA STUDY TOUR

South India study tour is part of academics and the main purpose and objective of the visit is to make the students familiar about forest types, different ecosystems and major renowned institutes in Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Tamilnadu and Kerala. Few institutes visited are

17 NSS (NATIONAL SERVICE SCHEME)

Under NSS Programme Forest College and Research Institute (FCRI) has conducted various events and awareness campaigns in order to mobilize the local communities and educational institutions.

Students of FCRI not only took up green challenge in the local community but also involved in various social activity programs like creating awareness on “Swachh Bharath”, “Telanagana ku Haritha Haram” Telangana social welfare schemes, “Beti Bachavo Beti Padavo”, “Rain Water Harvesting”, “Blood dona-tion”, “Importance of literacy” “Green Village”.

1. An awareness campaign was organised in the Narsapur village to educate the local communities on benefits of tree growth and how it help in reduction of environmental pollution. Under “Harithapa-tashala” programme students went to various government schools and motivated the young budding minds to take part in the noble Telangana ku Haritha Haram.

2. Vrikshaprasadam: Students of FCRI have distributed the saplings as “Vriksha Prasadam” to the gov-ernment schools and to the farmers and Anganwadi Kendras in the Narsapur village. They have mo-tivated the local communities to plant trees such as Neem, Tulasi, Maredu, Raavi etc which can be useful in performing their festivals.

3. Pachathoranam: To ensure “GREEN VILLAGE” where students have gone for roadside plantations in the Mancherial district.

4. Blood donation camp organized by Telangana State Forest Academy, Dhulapally.

5. Clean Up Programme: Students of FCRI have participated in the programme by collecting the paper wastes, plastic clean up activity in the premises of the Botanical garden @ Gachibowli and generated awareness regarding cleanliness i.e “Clean India is Green India” among the walkers and visitors.

22 HOSTELS AND MESS FACILITIES

Hostel is a place where food and lodging are provided for students. Students belonging to different regions and cultures stay together in a hostel. They learn the lesson of co operation; Students learn many things in a hostel. It makes their life regular and systematic. They learn the lessons of punctuality and discipline. They develop their personality. They learn to be independent. Students in hostel are guided by teachers and wardens.

B Sc. Forestry (Hons.) is a compulsory residential degree program. Forest College and Research Institute has excellent hostel facilities and infrastructure within the campus that make students feel comfortable and at home. There is a men’s hostel which can accommodate up to 150 students. It has a secure women’s hostel which can accommodate up to 150 students. Hostel rooms are with attached bathroom and are spa-cious, convenient, comfortable and luxurious which provide better environment for student. Hostels have two common rooms each where students assemble to watch television. They also discuss in groups about the daily events, current issues, etc. A hostel has facilities for indoor games. The men and women hostels have one combined mess, where the students are offered a choice of both vegetarian and non vegetarian food. Mess run on contractual basis by the students. Life in FCRI hostels is a community life. They live to-gether, eat together and go out together. They enjoy excursions and parties. Life is merry and jovial in our hostels. Generally the mess bill is around Rs. 3000 per month.

1. M.Sc@FCRI, Mulugu Forest College and Research I, Mulugu offers M.Sc programme in Forestry from 2020 onwards for which a separate entrance examination will be conducted during the month of June-July.

2. M.Sc @ ICAR institutesICAR conducts all india entrance examination for admission (AIEEA) in the month of April/May to master degree programme in Forestry offered by SAU’s. The exam is followed by Counselling and the toppers are provided with icar-pg scholarship. To achieve this, the students have to prepare intensively on the syllabus prescribed for the entrance exam.

In many states, Forestry colleges are under State Agricultural Universities which are accredited by the Indi-an Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR). These colleges offer M.Sc and Ph.D programmes in Forestry. They conduct their own university level Entrance examination for selection of students into M.Sc and the selection is subjected to the discretion of individual universities.

3. M.Sc@FRI,DehradunFRI M.Sc is a national level exam conducted by Forest Research Institute, Dehradun for admission to M.Sc Programs in Forestry, Wood Science and Technology and Environment Management. The selection criteria is based on the Entrance test conducted by FRI followed by Counseling.

4. M.Sc@ WII, DehradunFor those interested to pursue higher education in Wildlife and conservation, Wildlife Institute of India offers a two-year Master’s course in Wildlife Science and the degree is awarded by Saurashtra University Gujarat. For admission, a candidate will have to appear for a (National Eligibility Test)NET exam followed by Person-ality and Aptitude Test (PAT) .

From Beginning 2019, WII has introduced a 2-year residential Master’s course in Heritage Conservation and Management. Candidates will have to undergo online NET Exam followed by Personality and Aptitude Test (PAT) at Dehradun.

Indian Institute of Remote Sensing is a prestigious institute under the Department of Space and consid-

ered the best institute for Remote sensing and geoinformatics studies.This institute offers M.tech with

specialization in Forest Resources and Ecosystem services affliated to Andhra University. B.Sc forestry

graduates are eligible to apply for this course. Selection is through an Entrance examination conducted

by the institute followed by interview.

7. PGDFM@ IIFM, Bhopal

Want to become Green Managers of the Future- then IIFM, Bhopal is the right choice for you. IIFM

offers two year Post graduate diploma in Forest management. PGDFM is recognized by All India Council

for technical Education (AICTE) and equated to a Masters Degree of an Indian University. The entry is

through a sequence of screening tests such as CAT/XAT tests followed by written Aptitude tests and

Personal Interviews.

8. PGDM(ABM)@MANAGE,Hyderabad

MANAGE, Hyderabad is another institute to be looked upon for producing Entrepreneurs. This institute

runs a two year course on Post graduate diploma in Management(Agri-Business Management(PGD-

M(ABM)).This also requires CAT score to screen initially followed by Group discussion, Essay writing and

Indian Plywood Industries Research and Training Institute (IPIRTI) is conducting one year Post Graduate

Diploma course in Wood and Panel Products Technology for young science and engineering graduates who

are selected from all over the country based on the qualifying examination conducted by the institute itself.

IIFM, Bhopal, has recently started a four month certificate course on Chartered Foresters (Young

Professionals), which is approved by MOEF,GOI. The aim of the course is to develop business skills in

forestry scholars, so that they can grow as entrepreneurs. The admission is through a written examina-

tion followed by Interview.
