Christopher Marinello Esq. - Art Recovery Group

Christopher A. Marinello is one of the world's foremost experts in recovering stolen, looted, and missing works of art. A lawyer for over 30 years, Chris began his legal career as a litigator and became uniquely proficient in negotiating complex title disputes between collectors, dealers, museums and insurance companies.

In 2013, Chris founded Art Recovery Group, a specialist practice providing due diligence, dispute resolution and recovery services for the art market and cultural heritage sectors. Within this, Chris has overseen the development of the ArtClaim Database, which is one of its kind, a technologically advanced system for the identification and recording of issues and claims attached to works of art.

Chris has recovered stolen and looted artwork valued at over $500M, including some of the most important recoveries of Nazi looted art. As an adjunct professor at New York University, Chris has taught Law and Ethics in the Art Market and is a co-founder of the annual Art Crime Conference through NYU's School of Professional Studies. Chris is also a member of various arts advisory councils, including the City of London Worshipful Company of Arts Scholars.

Dr. Anne Laure Bandle - Froriep

Anne Laure is a lecturer in art and cultural heritage law at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE). Moreover, Anne Laure is a director of the Art Law Foundation and works at the law firm FRORIEP in Geneva as part of its Art Law Practice Group. She holds a PhD in law from the University of Geneva. Her PhD deals with the misattribution of art at auction and will be published with Edward Elgar Publishing.

She worked for five years as a teaching assistant in art and cultural property law at the Art-Law Centre, Geneva, and as a research assistant on a study sponsored by the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF) on “Alternative Dispute Resolution Mechanisms in Art-Law”. One of the study’s main outcomes is an Art-Law ADR platform entitled ArThemis, which provides a record of all cultural property disputes on a national and international level that have been resolved by means of an ADR mechanism.

Edward Cumming - XXIV Old Buildings

Said to be both a “formidable advocate” and “enormously user friendly”, Edward specialises in all aspects of commercial chancery litigation and “brings to the table substantial courtroom experience and a fearlessness that makes him fight hard for his clients”, having “already developed superb advocacy skills and sound judgment”. Legal 500 recommends him in six areas, and Chambers and Partners recommends him in five areas, saying that “he punches well above his weight – a real star”. Earlier this year he appeared for the Libyan Investment Authority in the 7-week trial of its much publicised claim against Goldman Sachs for US$1.2billion that arose from transactions entered into during the Gaddafi era. Edward continues to act in other litigation for the Libyan Investment Authority, and has wide experience of the civil disputes that both commonly arise following 'regime change' and commonly surround sanctions regimes.

Clients are impressed by his particular expertise in disputes involving art, antiquities and chattels. His recent experience includes the high-profile international disputes concerning the Rybolovlev collection, litigation over title to a Pisarro painting that had been subject to a forced sale by a Jewish art dealer under the Nazi regime in Vichy France, and various disputes as to provenance and title arising from auctions at Sotheby's and Christie's. Noor Kadhim - Joseph Hage Aaronson

Noor Kadhim is an English-qualified lawyer in the international disputes and art litigation practice of Joseph Hage Aaronson, a firm uniquely set up by barristers and solicitors in central London. In addition to arbitration and litigation, Noor has particular expertise in art and cultural heritage law. She qualified at a major international law firm in London, and has worked at a magic circle firm in Dubai and across several jurisdictions (ranging from Europe to the Near and Far East). Prior to joining JHA, Noor worked as Deputy Counsel, in charge of over 100 arbitration cases in the Eastern Mediterranean team of the Secretariat of the International Chamber of Commerce in Paris, (covering the Middle East, Greece, Cyprus, Turkey and Israel). Noor also advises clients on art law and cultural heritage issues including debt claims, authenticity, provenance and title issues, and matters surrounding heritage repatriation actions. Her clients have included museums, high-net worth collectors, institutions, auction houses, gallerists and art dealers. Noor regularly writes for legal publications, and has been invited to guest lecture at universities and institutions (including the University of Oxford, University of Southampton, the American University of Sharjah, and the Institute of Contemporary Arts).
