A MESSAGE FROM THE NJ CAR PRESIDENT

New Jersey’s 510 franchised new car and truck dealerships have enjoyed three straight years of record-breaking auto sales. Neighborhood new car dealers in New Jersey sold 520,000 new vehicles in 2018, up from 516,000 in 2017. The retail automotive industry accounted for $36.1 billion in new and used vehicle, parts and service sales last year, which represents an increase of more than $1.1 billion from 2017. These sales generated nearly $1.8 billion in State and local taxes collected by dealerships. Meanwhile, employment in the retail automotive sector surged to more than 39,000 men and women earning great pay with generous benefits in uniquely local jobs that can’t be outsourced.

The sun was shining bright on the car business in 2018, but there are dark clouds on the horizon. Manufacturers continue to pump more and better content in to new vehicles, which has created an “affordability crisis” as the average price of a new car has climbed to more than $36,000. Auto loan interest rates, while still low, are on the rise. Monthly payments are at record highs and loan terms on new vehicles are stretching, on average, to nearly six years just to stay within budget. There are other headwinds that are cause for concern, as well. Despite historic low unemployment and a booming stock market, consumer confidence is lagging. Uncertainty about potential tariffs on imported vehicles and parts are also making manufacturers, dealers and many consumers uncomfortable.

We’ve had an incredible run since the recovery began in 2009, but most economists expect a leveling-off or slight downturn in retail sales in 2019. This is nothing new. The retail auto sector has always been cyclical, with peaks and valleys in vehicle sales. While no one expects the bottom to drop out, dealers need to prepare for the downturn before it arrives. They need to start figuring out how to do more with less, so they can preserve profitability ahead of the inevitable decline in vehicle sales.

It’s important to note that the car business is not just about new car sales—how many vehicles are sold and how much the industry generates in dollar sales each year. Everyone likes to focus almost exclusively on those numbers. But dealers know the car business is really about “units in operation” and how they are servicing vehicles they sold last year, 3 years ago, 5 years ago or 10 years ago. When sales decline, providing necessary routine maintenance and warranty and safety recall repairs becomes more important. And this is the area where new car dealers really add value for the consumer.

Dealers are continuing to invest in finding, training and retaining qualified auto technicians. Demand for skilled automotive technicians is at an all-time high. Some estimates say New Jersey will need to fill more than 24,000 auto technician positions over the next six years, as demand grows and senior techs age out of the workforce. While lower sales may result in some contraction in the sales department, we expect to see dealerships adding jobs in their service bays. This report highlights the many positive economic benefits franchised auto retailers bring to the cities and towns in which they operate, and the significant tax revenues generated from dealerships for the State of New Jersey. The numbers are impressive, but they only tell part of the story. Most New Jersey new car and truck dealerships are small businesses. Neighborhood new car dealers invest in their communities and collectively support hundreds of worthwhile causes- everything from little league baseball teams to local hospitals and other charities. Dealers have invested billions of dollars in their brick-and-mortar facilities and provide an invaluable benefit for all New Jerseyans by annually servicing hundreds of thousands of vehicles when warranty or recall repairs are needed.

We hope you take the time to read this report and really reflect on the tremendous value neighborhood auto retailers bring to the marketplace.

Dealership financial data (and other information cited in this report) was collected from information reported by New Jersey franchised automotive retailers in 2018. The information was sufficiently detailed to allow the formation of a statistically reliable data base for financial and operational indicators.

The economic impact of the industry is separated into two main categories: direct and indirect. Direct impact comprises economic activity at automotive dealerships themselves. Indirect impact occurs away from the dealership proper and takes into account the extended contribution dealerships make to the New Jersey economy.

The indirect economic impact of automotive retailers was estimated by Auto Outlook, Inc. Estimates were based on previous impact studies that relied upon regional economic computer models. Indirect estimates in this report are intentionally conservative, and therefore, may underestimate the overall contribution automotive retailers make to the New Jersey economy.

Auto Outlook, Inc. is a regional automotive market analysis firm providing market research services to automotive dealers.
