HULL: Hull shape and running surface has the biggest impact on surf wakes. No matter what device is attached to the transom or how much weight you put in the boat, a sub-par hull will produce a sub-par wake.

BALLAST: There is no replacement for displacement: every boat from every brand requires weight to sink the boat deep and create bigger surf wakes. Weight placement is critical for various hull designs.

SHAPING DEVICE: Every boat requires trim tabs or some form of device on the transom to shape the wake and get the best possible surf wave.

THE MISINFORMATION

WHAT THEY SAY: “You don’t need to lean the boat over on its side, it’s bad for the engine.” The consumer does not understand this statement and assumes a level boat is better than a slightly leaning boat.

FACT: All engines—cars, lawnmowers, jet-skis, etc. are designed to operate at moderate angles.

FACT: Surf Gate and NSS must have ballast full on both sides of the boat and require a completely level boat, or their device will not be effective.The Malibu requires extra ballast and is un-surfable with stock weight. Without a level boat and extra ballast, Surf Gate delivers zero push, which means even Zane could not let go of the rope. The G23 at stock weight is 2800 lbs., filling the ballast tanks on both sides adds an additional 2800 lbs.

WHAT THEY SAY: “You can transfer port to starboard so much faster. It’s so much easier to set up the boat for right or left side surfers.”

FACT: Using Surf Tabs in an evenly weighted X10 and X30, we can do the same port/starboard quick transfer. Because the Surf Gate and NSS system require full ballast and evenly weighted boats to sink them deeper on both sides, they are trying to convince consumers flat is better vs. less weight and leaning over to one side.

FACT: More ballast weight, more engine strain, more fuel consumption.

WHAT WE BELIEVE: Not everyone needs to instantly change from goofy to regular. Think of the user experience—on a MasterCraft it takes less than 5 minutes to change out surfers, empty and fill tanks and balance the boat.

Customized, quality wakes create a better surf experience.

While G23 has adjustable settings to allow for steeper or rampy wakes, the Malibu does not. Challenge the consumer to surf our boat and try different boards to experience the full breadth of the Surf Tabs infinite surf wake shaping.

The MasterCraft Surf Package is outstanding, and works as a system to enhance an already great boat with a great running surface.

THE PREPARATION

It is critical to set up boats to surf properly. Learn this and know it before you demo. Familiarize yourself to each boat, set it up and determine the ideal weight before the customer is in the boat.

Surf wake key ingredients: weight + speed + depth of water.

The ideal conditions: • 4 passengers in the boat (equalling about 800 lbs.). • A minimum of 10 feet of water depth (the deeper the better). • See individual boat details for extra ballast, tab settings, recommended speed.

Don’t forget to bring a variety of boards. Larger / thicker boards offer more stable rides for beginners and bigger surfers. Smaller / thinner boards are more maneuverable and capable surfers can shred.

Make it an experience: bring wakeboards, bring tubes, bring a playlist for the iPhone and bring your A game.
