On his latest BIS recording, Yevgeny Sudbin combines solo pieces by two friends and fellow-composers: Nikolai Medtner and Sergei Rachmaninov. From the latter’s rich and varied production he has chosen six of the celebrated preludes, including ‘Alla marcia’ in G minor, Op. 23 No. 5, as well as the much-loved Prelude No. 12 in G sharp minor from the Op. 32 set. Sudbin, whom is a great admirer of Medtner, opens his new disc with a generous selection of that composer’s solo piano music, beginning with the ‘Prologue’ from Stimmungsbilder, Op. 1, and closes with the Sonata tragica, composed shortly before Medtner left Russia in 1921, never to return. It also includes three of the thirty-some Fairy Tales that Medtner composed throughout his life.

During the reformation the traditional forms of church service had been fundamentally altered, and in German churches Latin had yielded to the country’s own language. To an extent, however, the Latin mass text did remain in use in Protestant church music in particular the Kyrie and Gloria sections. Albeit incomplete, this form of mass setting was termed ‘Missa’; nowadays the pieces are often referred to as ‘Lutheran Masses’. Bach’s famous Mass in B minor, later expanded into a complete mass, began its existence as a work of this kind, and four other examples from Bach’s pen have survived. The two Lutheran Masses recorded here make extensive use of earlier compositions by Bach and include reworkings of arias and choruses from cantatas, but each of the four masses also has its own unmistakable artistic profile. This is the second volume of Lutheran masses performed by Bach Collegium Japan and Masaaki Suzuki.

The two ‘Chamber Symphonies’ recorded here are in fact two of Dmitri Shostakovich’s celebrated string quartets, orchestrated by Rudolf Barshai whom, as a member of the Borodin Quartet, enjoyed a long collaboration with Shostakovich. His Third and Fourth String Quartets, Opp. 73 and 83, were composed in 1946 and 1949 respectively, during the aftermath of World War II and the onset of Stalin’s terror. The disc is part of a project called ‘Essential Music’ initiated by the re:orchestra, a young and vibrant ensemble based in Rotterdam. Together with artistic director, the Mexican-Dutch conductor Roberto Beltrán-Zavala, the ensemble regularly undertakes multidisciplinary projects. For the present disc Vasile Nedea has arranged a Russian klezmer dance, a group of folk melodies from Transylvania and Muntenia, and two Romanian dances: Turceasca and Hora de la Goicea.

The Swedish recorder virtuoso Dan Laurin has demonstrated his remarkable versatility on some thirty recordings for BIS. However, in a recording career that stretches over almost 30 years, Laurin keeps returning to one particular set of works: the concertos by Antonio Vivaldi. The Concertos RV 441, 443 and 444 are included on this, his latest release. As he explains in his own liner notes for the present disc, he was inspired by his work on transcribing and performing Vivaldi’s Four Seasons: ‘A close reading of RV441 and RV443–445 reveals great similarities between these works and The Four Seasons: sudden changes of moods, turbulent emotions, burlesque whims mixed with sublime beauty and elegance… My aim here is to explore the recorder concertos with the same freedom and spontaneity that characterize the modern-day approach to the Seasons’.

Roman’s collection of Twelve Keyboard Sonatas was preserved in a manuscript assembled around 1748, but had most likely been composed in the course of the two decades before that. (One movement in Sonata III is labelled ‘a Napoli’, placing it in the autumn of 1736.) Consisting of between three and seven movements, the pieces have been referred to both as ‘suites’ and ‘sonatas’. Whatever the label, the collection is a fascinating testimony to a period of great stylistic diversity and change. In these recordings, Anna Paradiso emphasizes this aspect, performing the sonatas on three different instruments – a French and an Italian harpsichord and a copy of a Swedish clavichord from 1742 – with well-judged ornamentations and use of rubato.

Pauline Viardot was one of the most extraordinary women in the history of music. Daughter of the Spanish tenor Manuel García and sister of the mezzo-soprano Maria Malibran and of the baritone Manuel García the Younger, she studied piano with Liszt and counterpoint and harmony with Reicha. Twelve of the passionate songs on this disc are arrangements of mazurkas by her good friend Frédéric Chopin; the others set some major poems in Russian, a language she spoke fluently.

The Russian composer Grigori Frid, whose long life encompassed the entire existence of the Soviet Union, is best known for his 1969 chamber opera The Diary of Anne Frank. His chamber music includes three major works for viola and piano, all included on this release. They are followed by In Memoriam Grigori Frid, a touching tribute by Alexander Vustin to his former teacher. Elena Artamonova was born in Moscow and studied at the Tchaikovsky Conservatoire with Yuri Bashmet: now based in the UK, she holds a number of international prizes.

The organist and harpsichordist John Worgan was one of the most highly respected musicians in the London of his day: Handel admired his playing, and Burney described him as ‘very masterly and learned’. Most of his music is lost, but his fifth son, James Worgan, had fifteen of his father’s organ pieces published after his death, and they are recorded here for the first time, performed on the organ of St Botolph’s without Aldgate, where Worgan himself was organist from 1753 until his demise – the perfect vehicle for this quirky but proud music.

For the very first time, Gioachino Rossini’s sacred drama Mosè is here performed inside a cathedral, in a semi-staged production at the amazing Duomo di Milano. The cathedral’s supervisory body, the Veneranda Fabbrica del Duomo di Milano, chose the most advanced technology to open Rossini’s masterpiece up to a wider public, using evocative lighting and colour effects, backed by an innovative video-mapping technique to characterize the drama’s various scenes with an unprecedented sense of immediacy. The great Italian bass-baritone Ruggero Raimondi has long been a leading exponent of the title role in Rossini’s biblical drama. His appearance in the iconic role of Moses was inevitably a focal point of the Cathedral event. This production includes a bonus documentary revealing the secrets of the Milan Cathedral.
