Generally, applicants are considered either as a recent secondary education applicant or a non-Year 12 applicant, depending on your highest level of educational attainment.

It’s important to understand the entry requirementsMake sure you understand the entry requirements for your chosen course by reading the course page carefully.

In addition to your academic performance or professional experience, some courses may also require:

• prerequisite subjects or equivalent• a minimum ATAR requirement or equivalent.

Whether it’s to complement your course application or to meet an equivalent standard to prerequisites or the ATAR, you may also be required to complete one or more of the following:

• a personal statement • specified entrance tests • non-academic assessments

(for teaching courses) • a supplementary information form • an audition • an interview• a folio presentation.

Gather the supporting documents you’ll needWhen you apply directly to Deakin as a non-Year 12 applicant, it’s important to attach any requested supporting documentation, which could include a CV, academic transcripts, specified entrance test results or a personal statement – otherwise, your application might be delayed. We recommend gathering all this documentation before you start the application process, so that you can complete it in one sitting. However, you can save and return to your application at a later time, if required.

Apply online – through VTAC or Deakin’s applicant portalDepending on your course, you might be able to start in Trimester 1 (March), Trimester 2 (July) or Trimester 3 (November).

If you’re a recent secondary education applicant, you should submit your application for Trimester 1 through VTAC (vtac.edu.au).

If you’re a non-Year 12 applicant, applying for Trimester 1 for one Deakin course only, you can apply direct to Deakin.3 Otherwise if applying for more than one course, you should apply through VTAC.

Applications for Trimesters 2 or 3 should be made directly to Deakin via the applicant portal at applicantportal.deakin.edu.au.

When can I expect an offer? VTAC information about dates and offers is available on the VTAC website, vtac.edu.au. For Trimester 1,4 Deakin makes offers across the VTAC rounds – in November, December, January and February.

For applications made direct to Deakin, offers are made via email. Timing varies depending on the course, time of year and whether the applicant information was supplied correctly, but offers are generally made within a few working days.

How do I defer my studies?It’s easy to defer your studies at Deakin – most courses let you postpone your studies while retaining your Deakin place for up to two years.

Study the way you wantLearning that fits in – study full time or part timeFor most courses you can switch between part-time and full-time study at Deakin, and set your own pace throughout your education.

This means, if things change, you’re not locked into a study commitment that no longer suits you.

You’re considered a full-time student if you’re enrolled in three or more subjects in a trimester. Any fewer, and you’re considered a part-time student.

Study when you’re ready Deakin has three study periods during the teaching year. This gives you more choice and flexibility when starting your degree and can even help you fast-track your study by taking extra units throughout the year.

Some students take a trimester off to work or travel, then catch up later. You can also spread your study load, to fit your studies around your lifestyle.

Deakin’s trimesters run from:

• March to June (Trimester 1)• July to October (Trimester 2)• November to February (Trimester 3).

Trimester 3 is optional and subject to availability of units.

Living near campusThe closest suburbs to our Melbourne Burwood Campus are Burwood East, Box Hill South, Camberwell and Ashburton.

From Melbourne’s CBD it takes about an hour to get to campus via train, bus or tram (the tram stop is on Burwood Highway, right in front of the campus). Alternatively, you can get to Burwood in just half an hour by car, or even cycle to campus.

Geelong Waterfront Campus Study world-class courses overlooking the stunning Corio BayOur Geelong Waterfront Campus is right on Corio Bay – in the heart of Geelong. Originally built as wool stores in the 19th century, the buildings have been extensively renovated, creating a modern, impressive campus.

Geelong is the second-most populated urban area in Victoria (after Melbourne), with a population of more than 250,000 people.

One of the world’s most beautiful coastal drives, the Great Ocean Road, is just 30 minutes away, complete with famous surf beaches and the occasional whale sighting.

Geelong Waterfront Campus was founded in 1994, and now has more than 5000 students.

The campus boasts a number of state-of-the-art facilities, including:

Completed in May 2018, it offers 410 bedrooms in five- to nine-bedroom shared apartments across 10 floors; 33 studio apartments are also available within Geelong’s iconic T&G House.

Getting to GeelongBy ferry, train or car – travelling to Geelong is quick and easy. From Docklands, a daily ferry takes 90 minutes, or by the regional rail link from Southern Cross station, you’ll be there in under an hour.

If you’re driving from Melbourne’s west, you might find your commute’s only an hour.

More than 8000 students access world-class programs and superb facilities, while enjoying the relaxing, regional environment.

Geelong is on a bay and close to some of Australia’s best surf beaches, with diving and recreational fishing all on offer. The campus itself is approximately 9km from the Geelong CBD.

On campus, outdoor areas and spacious new buildings are perfect for socialising and studying. Advanced, hands-on learning environments include:

Warrnambool Campus Join a friendly, close-knit communityThree hours from Melbourne and two hours by car from Geelong, Warrnambool is roughly 250km south-west of Melbourne and has a population of more than 30,000.

The Warrnambool Campus is set on the banks of the Hopkins River and located approximately 5km from Warrnambool’s CBD, which is serviced by Princes Highway and has its own railway station and bus services.

National Indigenous Knowledges, Education, Research and Innovation (NIKERI) Institute Offering community-based education programs, the National Indigenous Knowledges, Education, Research and Innovation Institute gives Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians the flexibility to access higher education while maintaining family, work and community commitments.

The approach to course delivery includes a combination of study intensives and distance education options that promote access and equity for Indigenous Australian students. Reach your goals with Deakin’s supportFeesDepending on the course, an Australian Commonwealth supported undergraduate student at Deakin in 2021 can expect to pay between $3950 and $14,500 for 8 credit points of study. These fees will change for 2022.

Eligible students can get loans via the Higher Education Contribution Scheme-Higher Education Loan Program (HECS-HELP). Repayments are made through the Australian taxation system once your annual income exceeds the minimum threshold.1

If you’re an eligible student, you can access a range of government financial assistance programs, such as Youth Allowance and Austudy.

Government assistance Commonwealth Supported PlaceIf you’re an Australian citizen, holder of a permanent humanitarian visa, permanent resident or New Zealand citizen and meet Australia’s residency requirements, you’ll be eligible for a Commonwealth Supported Place (CSP) for a bachelor course at Deakin. The Australian Government subsidises a CSP by paying part of the fees directly to the University, making your education more affordable and accessible.

If you’re a student enrolled in a CSP, you’re only required to contribute part of the cost of your course through ‘student contributions’. The cost of your course will depend on the units you study.

HECS-HELP LoanThe Australian Government scheme, HECS-HELP, is a loan scheme for eligible students enrolled in a CSP.

Under the HECS-HELP loan scheme you can defer all of your tuition fees or make an upfront payment.2 The HECS-HELP loan covers the student contribution part of your student fees. You’ll begin paying back your loan to the Australian Taxation Office in small increments once you meet the minimum income threshold.1

Key terms for choosing your courseCampus Deakin has four campuses – one in Melbourne, another in Warrnambool, two in Geelong, and our online learning platform. If you enrol to study exclusively online, this is referred to as ‘Cloud (online)’.

ATAR The ATAR is a rank from 0 to 99.95. It indicates a student’s performance in relation to other students.

The ATAR is calculated by using an aggregate produced by adding:

• scaled study score in English, English Language, Literature, or English as an Additional Language (EAL)

• the best three VTAC scaled study scores, and• 10% of the fifth and sixth scores that are available.

Adjustment factors applied via Educational Access Schemes don’t change the ATAR, they change an applicant’s selection rank for a course that the applicant has listed as a preference. This results in the applicant moving up the course selection list. It also means that an applicant’s selection rank can be different for each course listed in their course preference list.

If the applicant is allocated sufficient adjustment factor points, the applicant might receive an offer for a course even though their ATAR is below the published lowest selection rank.

Admissions transparencyAs per Australian Government guidelines, the ATAR published in this guide is the lowest ‘adjusted selection rank’ for which an offer was made in 2021. The ‘selection rank and its corresponding ATAR’ is an applicant’s ATAR, plus any adjustment factors applied. Deakin operates an open and transparent admissions process; visit the VTAC course search at vtac.edu.au or deakin.edu.au/transparency for an ATAR profile of all Deakin courses.

Deakin’s Bachelor of Medical Imaging has been developed to equip you with the latest knowledge in medical radiation science, and train you in techniques like general radiography, computed tomography (CT), digital vascular imaging and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). You’ll gain hands-on experience in our medical imaging labs and real-world medical imaging clinics with functional image intensifiers, x-ray and ultrasound machines.

Upon graduation, you’ll be prepared to pursue a career as a diagnostic radiographer. Our students develop the foundational skills essential for any career in medicine, but are also given the opportunity to experience healthcare in multiple specialist areas. Our Doctor of Medicine has an emphasis on rural and regional medicine and aims to satisfy the critical shortage of doctors in regional areas – making graduates highly employable.

During the first two years of the course you’ll study at our $53 million purpose-built facilities at the Geelong Waurn Ponds Campus. This allows you to learn and engage through problem-based sessions, workshops and hands-on learning sessions. Your clinical experience will take place in laboratories, hospitals, and other health services in the Geelong region.

In third and fourth year, students are immersed in the clinical environment, at clinical schools in Ballarat, Geelong, Melbourne, Warrnambool and/or the Rural Community Clinical School, where they complete programs that span from general medicine and surgery to specialised programs.

Students also spend time in third year following patients as they transition between hospital and community care, gaining a broader appreciation of the healthcare system and the patients’ healthcare journeys.

Across third and fourth year, students complete the Research Scholar Program, gaining foundational skills in analysing evidence and designing research programs that are important for future careers in medicine.

Students are provided extensive opportunities for feedback on their progress, with a program of assessment and self-evaluation that occurs in the clinical workplace.

Students are also provided the opportunity to complete a rotation of their third-year studies in the Northern Territory, to gain a greater understanding of rural and remote medicine and Indigenous Health.

The course concludes in year four with two five-week rotations – an elective that can be taken in Australia or overseas, and a pre-internship hospital rotation in which you’ll experience the day-to-day life of an intern.

Doctor of Medicine graduates are highly sought-after for internship positions with healthcare providers in Australia and abroad. Deakin’s MD program allows you to develop a deep understanding of the challenges and nuances of rural medicine, putting you in a strong position to address the shortfall of doctors in regional areas.

Admission to the Doctor of Medicine is determined by a combination of grade point average (GPA) in an approved undergraduate or postgraduate degree, Graduate Australian Medical School Admissions Test (GAMSAT) score, eligible bonuses and interview performance.

Requirements include the completion of an undergraduate or postgraduate degree from an Australian university or a higher education institution recognised by the Australian Qualifications Framework, or a recognised degree listed in the National Office of Overseas Skills Recognition (NOOSR) Guide with the weighted GPA of at least 5.0.

The minimum entry requirement is a minimum score of 50 in each of the three sections of the GAMSAT, and an overall score of 50 or greater. The score on the GAMSAT must have been obtained no more than two years before the course commencement date.

A minimum overall score of 50% at multi-mini interview (MMI), a series of five-minute interviews at 10 stations, using standardised questions and scoring procedures that are designed to assess applicant attributes, and scoring at least 2 out of 10 on each station.

FacultyAn organisational division within a university; for example, the Faculty of Arts and Education is one of the four faculties at Deakin University. Within each faculty are several schools; for example, Deakin Law School is within the Faculty of Business and Law.

Grade Point Average (GPA)A GPA is an internationally recognised numerical calculation used to find the average result of all grades received over a defined study period. The GPA can be used for a variety of purposes, including as selection criteria for admission to a program or for assessing academic progress over a set period for progress review purposes.

Graduate entryA course that requires prior completion of an undergraduate degree for entry. Deakin’s Doctor of Medicine is a graduate-entry course.

Higher Education Contribution Scheme-Higher Education Loan Program (HECS-HELP)HECS-HELP is a government loan scheme to assist eligible CSP students with their tuition fees (student contributions). Repayments are made through the Australian taxation system once your annual income exceeds the minimum threshold for repayment.

HonoursHonours is an additional year of specialised study, usually taken after you complete a bachelor degree, or embedded as part of a bachelor degree. Honours may provide you with a competitive edge in the job market or a pathway into a higher degree.

International Baccalaureate (IB)The IB diploma is an internationally recognised, comprehensive two-year study program designed for university entrance. Australian tertiary admission centres convert IB scores to a notional ATAR, enabling IB students to be ranked for tertiary entrance alongside their peers. Deakin accepts IB diploma graduates as having satisfied the requirements for university entry. ibo.org

Interest areaYou can browse courses at Deakin by interest area, such as Sport, Business or Health. deakin.edu.au/courses

LevelThe year level at which units in your course are studied. Level 1 is equivalent to your first year of full-time study, level 2 is equivalent to your second year of full-time study, and so on. You can usually tell what level a unit is by looking at the first number in a unit’s code.

MajorAn approved group of at least 6 (and up to 8) credit points of related units, normally taken in sequence at each level of a course.

MinorA minor is a group of related units in an area of study or academic discipline. Minors are shorter than majors and are usually four units long.

Non-Year 12 applicantThere are three categories under which non-Year 12 applicants may apply to Deakin.

• Higher education study – applicants whose highest level of study enrolment since leaving secondary education is a higher education course, whether at a university or non-university provider.

• Vocational education and training (VET) study – applicants whose highest level of study enrolment since leaving secondary education is a VET course.

• Work and life experience (includes less recent secondary results) – applicants who left secondary education more than two years previously and have not undertaken VET or higher education study since then.

Offer round/sRefers to the series of dates on which offers of higher education places are issued to applicants throughout the year, whether through a tertiary admission centre or directly by a higher education provider.

PathwayPathways provide alternative entry options for getting into a course at Deakin if you do not meet the requirements for entry. Pathways to Deakin courses can include options such as Deakin College, TAFE courses or starting your course at a different campus. deakin.edu.au/entry-pathways

Personal statementThe personal statement is used in the admission process by university applicants to highlight any relevant factors or circumstances that cannot be included in the application itself. For example, motivation to study, work experience, community experience, academic performance, languages other than English.

The personal statement can be accessed online once you have registered with VTAC. You can only submit one statement – so you should address all your course preferences and provide details to support your application, such as relevant work experience and your reasons for applying. It is also important that you submit the form by the specified closing date at vtac.edu.au. If a personal statement is required or will be considered, it will be listed in the VTAC course detail online. deakin.edu.au/courses/how-to-apply/preparing-your-application

Postgraduate degreeA course of study usually beyond bachelor level, including graduate certificate, graduate diploma, masters and research degree. In many cases, eligibility for entry to a postgraduate course requires you to have completed an undergraduate degree and/or have significant work experience.

PrerequisitesThe VCE subjects or other requirements that applicants must complete to be eligible for selection into a course. Information about prerequisites is listed in this guide from page 18, on the VTAC website (vtac.edu.au) and in Victorian Tertiary Entrance Requirements (VICTER) publications.

Raw ATARThe unadjusted ATAR of an applicant to which an offer of a place was made in the relevant year or year-to-date.

Recent secondary education applicantCurrent Year 12 (2021) applicants and Year 12 graduates from 2020 and 2019.

Recognition of prior learning (RPL)RPL is an assessment process used to evaluate a person’s prior learning and experience to determine whether credit can be granted in a course to shorten the length of the degree. There are two aspects to recognition of prior learning:

• credit may be transferred to your Deakin program from completed or partly completed studies you have undertaken at other accredited institutions; and

• credit may be granted on the basis of knowledge and skills acquired through informal learning, e.g. in the workplace.

Scholarships A scholarship is a grant or payment made to support a student’s education, awarded on the basis of academic or other achievement. Deakin offers a range of scholarships for commencing students that recognise and reward many accomplishments, from leadership skills to academic success, extra-curricular achievements and commitment to study while experiencing personal hardship. deakin.edu.au/scholarships

Selection rankThe ranking that tertiary admission centres and most universities actually use to assess admission to a course. A person’s course selection rank can include their ATAR, any adjustments they are eligible for, such as equity or subject adjustments, other contributions calculated on the basis of work experience or previous non-secondary study, portfolio assessments, results of specified entrance tests, etc.

SemesterThe teaching period of some courses in Deakin’s Faculty of Health and Faculty of Science, Engineering and Built Environment. Semester 1 runs from February to June; Semester 2 runs from July to November.

SeminarA class where a small group of students discusses study materials and ideas with a member of the teaching team.

Single unit (non-award) studySingle unit (non-award) study provides access to a wide variety of university-level units, without students having to study a full degree. Some units have prerequisites or special requirements but most are open to all potential students and on completion can lead to further pathway options. deakin.edu.au/single-unit

Key termsSpecial Entry Access Scheme (SEAS)SEAS is an umbrella program of special entry schemes governed by VTAC, and conducted by participating tertiary institutions, including Deakin, that provides entry for the disadvantaged into undergraduate courses. vtac.edu.au and deakin.edu.au/access-equity

Special Tertiary Admissions Test (STAT) Multiple ChoiceThe STAT Multiple Choice is a test developed by the Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER) to assess an individual’s ability to analyse information and think critically. The STAT Multiple Choice is compulsory for non-Year 12 applicants applying for entry into any of Deakin’s undergraduate law programs.

Some non-Year 12 applicants will be exempt from sitting the test. If you are unsure whether or not you need to sit the STAT Multiple Choice, or would like more information on non-Year 12 additional entry requirements, visit vtac.edu.au.

Student Amenities-Higher Education Loan Program (SA-HELP)SA-HELP is a government loan scheme for eligible students to defer all or part of the Student Services and Amenities Fee.

Student contribution In a Commonwealth Supported Place (CSP), the Australian Government pays some of your fees and you pay the rest. This is called your ‘student contribution’. If you’re enrolled in a CSP, you may be eligible for a HECS-HELP loan to cover your student contribution amount.

Student Services and Amenities FeeThis is a fee higher education providers can charge for non-academic services and amenities, such as advocacy, sporting programs, legal advice and referral, health and welfare and disability support.

Study scoreA score of 0–50 that shows how a VCE student performed in a particular subject compared with others in the same year. It is calculated from your results in assessments and examinations in that subject.

TrimesterThe teaching period of most courses at Deakin: Trimester 1 runs from March to June, Trimester 2 from July to October and Trimester 3 spans November to February.

Undergraduate degreeUsually the first degree you obtain in a given discipline area. For example, a Bachelor of Health Sciences. An undergraduate student is usually someone studying for their first degree in a given discipline.

UnitA Deakin subject or unit is normally one trimester long and most have a value of 1 or 2 credit points.

Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE)The VCE is a certificate that recognises the successful completion of Year 12 in Victoria. The VCE can provide a pathway to university studies, TAFE and employment.

Victorian Tertiary Admissions Centre (VTAC)VTAC is the centralised admissions centre for most undergraduate university courses in Victoria. vtac.edu.au

VTAC Year 10 guideA publication produced by VTAC for Year 10 students who are considering applying for tertiary study in the future, to help plan their pathway towards tertiary study. The 2020 Guide will be most applicable for students completing Year 10 in 2021.

Weighted Average Mark (WAM)WAM is a calculation of all your relevant unit outcomes within a course. The WAM is weighted by taking into consideration the credit points of a unit and the result. Not all grades are used in the calculation of the WAM.

Year 12 applicantApplicants with recent secondary education, including current Year 12 (2021) applicants and Year 12 graduates from 2020 and 2019.
