Professional Experience Program The Professional Experience Program is a critical part of every Deakin teaching student’s course experience. Working with more than 1400 schools across Australia, we’ll arrange at least 80 days of placements for you in schools where you’ll learn from experienced teachers. Students also have access to specialised teaching spaces on campus to prepare for teaching.

Take your professional experience one step further At Deakin you can gain an international perspective on teaching by undertaking your professional experience overseas through our Global Education Program, a teaching practicum that develops a broad range of teaching and learning approaches. Opportunities may be available from overseas locations such as Canada, Chile, Malaysia, Nepal and Switzerland.

Broaden your skill set and gain an understanding of international and intercultural education. We have a strong commitment to Indigenous teacher education and also run a Global Education Program in Australia’s Northern Territory.

We match our students with schoolsDeakin works closely with schools to ensure that practical experiences provide the best possible learning opportunities for future teachers. A dedicated team will work with you to find the right placement based on your interests, skills, residential location and mode of transport.

Deakin participates in the Victorian State Government supported teaching academies and alliances program. Our alliance partners in three of Deakin’s campus areas provide pre-service teachers with placement opportunities in local schools. Some of these placements are exclusive to Deakin students.

Learn without limitsTeachers are needed to work in rural, regional and metropolitan areas, and likewise Deakin offers the opportunity to study education in each of these settings, at our campuses in Burwood (Melbourne), Waurn Ponds (Geelong) and Warrnambool, as well as via the Cloud Campus. You may also be able to transfer between campuses as you progress through your course, providing you meet the course requirements and there is availability in the course.

Institute of Koorie EducationDeakin’s Institute of Koorie Education provides community-based education programs, enabling Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians the flexibility to gain access to higher education while still being able to maintain family and community connections and obligations.

Our programs offer:

Deakin’s Bachelor of Education (Early Years) allows students to gain hands-on experience within early childhood and primary education. Studies focus on contemporary issues in children’s learning and development, curriculum theories and pedagogies, discipline knowledge and the changing work context within early childhood and primary education.

Students apply their learning in professional contexts, gaining experience and confidence as pre-service teachers in early childhood, preschool and primary school settings. Meeting new national teaching, education and care standards in early childhood and primary education, this course prepares students for diverse learning contexts in the 21st century.

Professional recognitionThis program is approved by the Australian Children’s Education and Care Quality Authority (ACECQA) as an early childhood teaching qualification in Australia; and is accredited by the Victorian Institute of Teaching (VIT) as an initial teacher education program against the Australian professional standards for teachers. This course will prepare you to meet all requirements to register with VIT.

CareersIncreasingly, there is a demand for qualified early childhood teachers who can teach children in early childhood, preschool and primary school settings. Graduates of this course will have varied career opportunities, including working as an early childhood teacher, service director, coordinator, preschool field officer, adviser or senior adviser within early childhood facilities. In addition, graduates can be employed as primary school teachers or seek employment in government agencies, community services and not-for-profit organisations.

Professional experienceThis course includes 115 days of supervised professional experience placements. A current Working with Children Check is required before commencing early childhood/school experience placements.

Deakin’s aim is for graduates to be professional educators who can demonstrate that they are classroom-ready and able to make a difference to students’ learning. You will also be supported in your learning through Deakin’s Professional Experience Program. The Professional Experience Program gives you at least 80 days work experience in schools alongside experienced teachers. You will also have the opportunity to undertake a work placement in international or remote Northern Territory settings through our Global Education Program.

Primary subject specialisationStudents will have the opportunity to develop advanced skills in a key area of the primary school curriculum, which provides a competitive advantage for employment. The following primary specialisations will be offered subject to demand and availability:

• health and physical education• humanities• language and literacy• languages• mathematics and numeracy• science• special educational needs• visual arts

You can also select the International Baccalaureate Primary Years options as an elective unit in Year 3 of your course. This will allow you be eligible to apply for the IB PYP teaching certificate from the IBO.

Professional recognitionDeakin’s Bachelor of Education (Primary) is currently undertaking accreditation with the VIT as a nationally accredited course for the purposes of teacher registration in Victoria. Graduates intending to apply for registration in Victoria should carefully check all requirements relating to this process specified at vit.vic.edu.au. The course is the only undergraduate teacher education program in Victoria to be accredited with the International Baccalaureate Organisation to offer a recognised pathway for teaching in the IB Primary Years Program. This course will prepare you to meet all requirements to register with VIT.

CareersThere is a strong demand for qualified teachers and graduate starting salaries for teachers are high compared to the graduate average. An increased demand for teachers has also resulted in improvements in teaching conditions, resources and career advancement opportunities. As a Deakin graduate, you may find employment as a teacher within the private or public education sectors. Opportunities also exist in government agencies, community services and not-for-profit organisations.

Deakin’s Associate Degree of Education provides an accessible pathway to higher education. From day one you will commence studying units from your target bachelor’s degree. You will benefit from small class sizes, state-of-the-art technology and outstanding facilities, allowing you to develop the necessary skills to become a successful university student.

This course prepares graduates with the attributes, discipline-specific knowledge, professional behaviours and standards required to practice as a secondary school teacher in Australia, teaching from junior secondary to senior secondary levels.

The course combines a postgraduate teaching qualification with undergraduate discipline studies in the sciences relevant for teaching. The fast-tracked postgraduate level of study allows for some units to be undertaken in Trimester 3 so that graduates are ready to teach after just four years of study†. This postgraduate level initial teacher education degree gives you the edge to get ahead in the employment market.

Deakin’s aim is for graduates to be professional educators who can demonstrate that they are classroom-ready and able to make a difference to students’ learning. # The fast-tracked postgraduate level of study means that graduates are ready to teach after just four years of study. This is achieved through a compulsory Trimester 3 study in year 3 of the program.

The Master of Applied Learning and Teaching is a secondary-teacher qualification that allows you to work in secondary schools and other youth settings such as the Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning (VCAL) and the Vocational Education & Training System (TAFE).

The course uses a problem-based approach that is closely aligned with authentic school-improvement initiatives and links theory and practice through strong work integrated learning partnerships.

The course focuses on the middle and upper years of schooling and has a strong emphasis on experiential and applied learning pedagogies that enhance student engagement. You will be asked to engage critically with your developing expertise in teaching practice and to be open to contemporary ideas and research, challenging traditional transmissive approaches to teaching and responding to a need for greater cultural diversity and inclusivity in patterns of Australian educational participation.

Professional recognitionThis initial teacher program is approved by the Victorian Institute of Teaching (VIT) against the National Graduate Teacher standards for the purposes of teacher registration in Victoria. Graduates intending to apply for registration in Victoria should carefully check all VIT requirements relating to this process specified at vit.vic.edu.au.

This course will prepare you to meet all requirements to register with VIT.

Professional experienceStudents undertake 75 days of professional experience in an educational setting and 10 unsupervised professional development days by participating in professional development activities organised by the student.

CareersThis course prepares graduate teachers with the advanced professional knowledge, skills and attributes required of educators working in secondary schools and other youth learning contexts where applied and vocational learning are being implemented.

Course structure16 credit points – 10 credit points of core units, 6 credit points in one of the following three configurations: Research Project, Research Paper, Minor Thesis. Academic Integrity is a 0-credit-point compulsory unit.

Students must complete TAE40110 – Certificate IV in Training and Assessment with a Registered Training Provider prior to graduation. In addition to 75 days of professional experience in schools, students complete 10 unsupervised professional development days.

Students are also required to complete two 0-credit-point units as part of the Literacy and Numeracy Test for Initial Teacher Education (LANTITE) in order to graduate from their course.

The Master of Teaching is a teaching qualification in early childhood, primary or secondary teaching, and also gives you the option of a dual qualification in early childhood and primary or in primary and secondary.

These courses provide extensive hands-on experience, preparing you for an in-demand career in education. Students undertaking the single strand courses in early childhood, primary or secondary, have the option of taking an additional four units in a specialisation pathway or internship.

This ensures that our courses address the needs of the education sector and that our graduates are fully skilled when they enter the workforce.

Professional experiencePractical teaching experiences throughout your course ensure you have the practical experience you need to launch into your teaching career. Professional experience placements are undertaken in approved schools and early childhood settings (where appropriate) within Australia.

CareersThere is a strong demand for qualified teachers and graduate starting salaries for teachers are high compared to the graduate average. The increased demand for teachers has also resulted in improvements in teaching conditions, resources and career advancement opportunities. As a graduate of this course you may find employment as a teacher within the private or public education sectors. Opportunities also exist in government agencies, community services or not-for-profit organisations.

Once you find the course you’re after, make sure you understand the entry requirements, application methods and application dates.

Understand the entry and documentation requirementsMake sure you understand the entry requirements for your chosen course by reading the course page carefully (online at deakin.edu.au/course or in this booklet). For recent secondary education applicants, in addition to the listed ATAR, some courses may require you to have studied a prerequisite subject/s, while others may also require you to provide extra materials, such as a portfolio or personal statement.

Selection requirements for non-Year 12 applicants may include personal statement, entrance tests as specified, e.g. STAT (Special Tertiary Admissions Test), or the non-academic assessment (for all applicants to teaching courses), supplementary information form, audition, interview or folio presentation.

If you’re a recent secondary education applicant, applications for Trimester 1 should be made through VTAC (vtac.edu.au).
