The de Havilland Aeronautical Technical School was formed atStag Lane, Edgware in 1928 by the then Captain (later Sir)

Geoffrey de Havilland and Mr Frank Hearle. The School moved toHatfield in 1934, soon after the establishment of the new airfieldthere. The curriculum expanded rapidly to cover the full range ofaircraft design, manufacture and operation. The instructors were allpractising engineers in the Company, thus students were actively intouch with current problems and techniques. The T.K. series of lightaircraft was designed and built between 1932 and 1939, some beingflown by Company pilots in events such as the King's Cup Races.

During 1940 the School had to move from Hatfield when itspremises were destroyed by fire after a German bombing raid. Aftera spell in nearby Welwyn Garden City, it moved in 1941 to SalisburyHall, where the prototype Mosquitos were designed and built, nowthe home of the de Havilland Aircraft Heritage Centre. In 1947-48the School was progressively transferred to Astwick Manor, on thenorth-eastern border of Hatfield aerodrome. The Airspeed hangar,in which the prototype Horsa glider was built, was moved fromSalisbury Hall and became the new workshops. They were off theright-hand side of the photograph on page 3 of the brochure. Afterthis photograph was taken hostel accommodation was built on tothe right-hand side of the Manor.

Astwick Manor was opened formally by Lord Salisbury on June18 1949. This brochure was produced to commemorate theoccasion and to publicise the extent of the training facilities.

Following the absorption of the Company into Hawker SiddeleyAviation, the name was changed in 1965 to the Hawker SiddeleyAviation (Hatfield) Apprentice Training School. In 1984 theworkshops were handed over to St Albans College. In later yearsthe premises were unoccupied, but have since been renovated intoluxury apartments.
