1. INTRODUCTION
Digital Data Systems (dds) specializes in the design and manufacture of bomb calorimeter systems for different applications from the coal mining industry to educational institutes. The bomb calorimeter systems are the most advanced bomb calorimeter system available today. The CAL2k, ECO and e2K are "dry" static jacket isothermal calorimeters. The system is used to measure the calorific value of both solids and liquids. dds have three bomb calorimeter systems in their CAL2k range:
CAL2K ECO E2K The CAL2k is a calorimeter aimed at a higher volume market, which requires higher quantities of CV samples per day. A determination will take approximately 7 minutes to run, and depending on the number of vessels used 10 samples can be carried out every hour.
The ECO is an inexpensive calorimeter aimed at a lower volume market, which requires fewer quantities of CV samples per day. A determination will take approximately 50 minutes to run, and 1 sample can be carried out every hour.
The e2K is an inexpensive calorimeter language compatible system suited to both the lower volume and higher volume market. A determination can take 10 minutes using the CAL2k-2 Cooler and 1 vessel (Standard system).
1.1 WHO WOULD USE A DDS BOMB CALORIMETER SYSTEM?
The list of industries is endless; here are a few industries that are currently using our system:
• Coal Production (Collieries) • Coal end user (e.g. Steel, Paper, Sugar, Brick, Cement Production) • Coal Power Station • By-product analysis (Paper, Sugar, Fuel, Fertilizers) • Fuel Analysis (Solid and Liquid) • Waste Product Incineration • Munitions Propellants • Pyrotechnics • Standards Associations • Animal Feed Research (chicken, cattle, sheep) • Maize Production Research • Dairy Production Research • Commercial Analytical Laboratories • Universities, Colleges, Educational Institutions (Chemistry, Metallurgy, Zoology,
Biology, Animal Sciences)
1.2 WHY USE A DDS BOMB CALORIMETER SYSTEM? dds has more than 30 years experience in calorimetry. Our systems have been in the field since 1972 and there are some of our older models, which are still being used in the field today.
1.3 HISTORY
In 1972, the first unit - AMPC (Automatic Micro Processor Calorimeter) was produced. It was a dual water isothermal unit controlled by a microprocessor. In 1980 a new revolutionary design of vessel, namely the DRY vessel or CP510 was produced (no surrounding water jacket). Determination time was significantly reduced, increasing the unit efficiency by 4 times. With the processing power of the microprocessors available at the time, the CP500 Calorimeter was born with its striking “buttercup yellow” colour. The CP500 proved to be a very fast and reliable system and was exported to the USA, Europe, Scandinavia, Australasia, Africa and India. In early 2002 work began on the CAL2k. The tried and tested DRY system was retained and only the very latest electronic technology was used, including surface mount devices. The CAL2k is now in full production and is sure to be an even bigger success than its predecessor, the CP500. In 2005, dds came to realize the need for a smaller, low sample volume, and inexpensive calorimeter system with the same accuracy and reliability of the CAL2k. The ECO was then created as an alternative system to the CAL2k. In 2007 we introduced the new e2K system which is a language compatible system. The e2K system is suited to both high and low volume markets and is available in a variety of system options. The speed of determination of the e2K is equivalent to the speed of determination of the CAL2k.

6. OPTIONAL EXTRAS
6.1 DOCKING STATION
The DOCKING STATION CAL2k-5 is the latest addition to the CAL2k range of equipment. It was designed on request from a customer, but has a wider application. The DOCKING STATION is required when the Mass entry needs to be automated to avoid sample swapping and manual transcription errors. It is suitable in a high production environment with
multiple calorimeters, multiple bomb vessels and multiple operators. The Docking Station can only be used with the CAL2k system. Not required with the ECO or e2K systems.
6.1.1 OPERATIONS WITHOUT THE DOCKING STATION
The CAL2k requires a MASS and a Sample Identification (SID) in order to determine the calorific value and to log the result. Both values can be entered from the CAL2k front panel. If a balance is connected to the CAL2k then the MASS is read directly (no transcription error), but the SID needs to be entered manually, or it is self-incrementing. The CAL2k has no facility to read BARCODE. If the balance is located in a different room from the sample preparation (filling) and the CAL2k, then this can lead to more transcription errors, because log sheets are filled in. It can also lead to Sample Identification (SID) swapping.
6.1.2 OPERATIONS WITH THE DOCKING STATION
The DOCKING STATION is located close to the balance and connects to it. The SID entry can be from 3 sources: a. The Internal numerical keypad b. A optional PC keyboard c. A optional barcode scanner The MASS must come from the balance. Once the sample is weighed and the SID is entered, then this information is entered in the VESSEL. The crucible is placed in the vessel, and the vessel is closed. It can be filled and placed in any CAL2k calorimeter. The CAL2k recognizes the “BOMB MASS”, and reads the MASS, SID, GID from the vessel without any further operator intervention, after the CAL2k lid is closed.
6.1.3 COMPLEX BARCODE FEATURES
The barcode can be broken up into 3 fields: 1. Group Identification (GID) 2. Sample Identification (SID) 3. Ignored barcode digits (IGN) This allows the structure of the barcode in to ONE long code comprising GID and SID, where the IGN field can ignore any check-digits.

1. The vessel can be prepared in a different location away from the calorimeter. 2. The balance can be away from the calorimeter. 3. A bar code scanner can be used for sample identification. 4. The bar code can be “broken up” into Group ID and Sample ID. 5. An optional “PC keyboard” can be used in addition to the scanner (or instead) for Sample
ID. 6. No keyboard operation is required on the calorimeter. 7. The “vessel” can be placed in any calorimeter. 8. Sample ID mix up is avoided. There are no real disadvantages of using “vessel mass” operation, however it is recommend in this type of operation that more than one vessel be used. 6.2 E2K AIR COOLER
This is a new edition to our range of accessories. The E2K Air Cooler is only applicable to the E2K Minimum System Option. The air cooler will reduce your determination time by 30 minutes. It takes approximately 20 minutes for the E2k air cooler to bring the vessel temperature back to ambient temperature making it ready for the next determination cycle. Please note the E2K Air Cooler can be used with the ECO model; however the ECO calorimeter allows for the vessel temperature to be 8 Degrees C above ambient temperature when starting the next determination. With CAL2k and the E2k the vessel temperature needs to be back to ambient
temp before starting the next determination. So therefore the new E2K Air Cooler is more beneficial for the E2K range rather than the ECO. The Air cooler is not applicable to the CAL2k; the CAL2k-2 Cooler must be used.

6.3 HIGH PRESSURE OXYGEN REGULATOR A supply of oxygen at a pressure of 3.0Mpa (30 bars) (3000Kpa) within 10 meters of the bomb calorimeter system is required. A suitable pressure regulator must be supplied to allow for this high pressure. DDS can supply a suitable regulator at an additional cost or this item should be sourced locally by the agent or customer. However it is important to note that this item is vital and MUST be available before installation of the unit. Without the high pressure regulator you will NOT be able to operate the unit.

8. COMPARING BOMB CALORIMETRY METHODS
The CAL2k, ECO and e2K bomb calorimeter systems are "dry" static jacket isothermal calorimeters.
Comparing the different bomb calorimetry methods:
Adiabatic System: In the adiabatic system the environment is controlled so that no energy is lost or gained. To achieve this state, the Calorimeter Vessel (bomb) and bucket are surrounded by a water jacket which is strictly temperature controlled by a system of circulators, heaters and coolers, so that it has the same temperature as the inner bucket. Isothermal System: The Isothermal calorimeter measures the effect that the environment has on the bucket before and after the determination and corrects the result accordingly. This implies that the environment is stable during the determination. To achieve stability a large body of water surrounds the vessel and bucket assembly, which is thermally stable. DDS Developed their first calorimeter system in 1972, this system was a full isothermal system with water jacket. Prior to development of the CP500, it was demonstrated by Digital Data Systems that a polystyrene jacket, which has very little thermal mass and negligible heat conductivity, could replace the water jacket. The system was referred to as the "Dry Method". Isoperibol (Isothermal) calorimeter: With an isoperibol calorimeter a water jacket surrounds the bucket in which the vessel sits. The surrounding water jacket is controlled to be at a constant temperature. When a sample is fired, the heat from the vessel is transferred to the water in the bucket and the temperature rise of the bucket water is measured to determine the calorific value of the sample. "Dry" Static Jacket (Isothermal) calorimeter (DDS - CAL2k, ECO and e2K):
The "dry" static jacket isothermal method has no water inside the calorimeter. An aluminium sleeve that is an integral part of the vessel replaces the bucket. The sleeve transfers the heat from the combustion process rapidly and evenly around the outside shell of the vessel. The temperature sensors are located between the combustion vessel and the sleeve. The temperature rise of the vessel is measured to determine the calorific value of the sample. The surrounding water jacket is replaced by polystyrene that is insulated from the outside environment by an aluminium box. The timing of the determination and the quality of the insulation is such that the environment has negligible effect on the determination.
The advantages to the "dry" static jacket isothermal method are:
• No complicated water pipes and valves. • The associated switching circuitry is not required. • This makes the unit virtually maintenance free. • The electronic control circuits are reduced thus making the unit very easy to fault find
in case of failure. • With reduced electronics in the calorimeter, the training of a service technician or
operator is reduced to an absolute minimum. • Precise and reproducible determination of gross calorific values according to ISO 1928
and DIN International Standards.
Digital Data Systems Bomb Calorimeter System Catalogue www.cal2k.com 27
By making the vessel removable and by removing the cooling of the vessel from the calorimeter, the speed of each determination is greatly increased.
• Once a result is obtained for a determination, the hot vessel can be removed and cooled in a separate unit.
• This allows for another vessel to be inserted into the calorimeter and another determination to be started even before the previous vessel has been cooled.
• This allows for higher throughput in a single calorimeter
The use of the dry static jacket method allows water to be removed from the vessel surrounds which in turn allows electronics to be built into the vessel.
The advantages to this are:
• The temperature measurements of the vessel are totally independent of the calorimeter and all calibration data is stored inside the vessel.
• Multiple vessels can be used in a single calorimeter. • Any vessel can be used in any calorimeter without re-calibration. • If a vessel needs reconditioning or fails the calorimeter can still be used, using another
vessel.

ISO 1928: 1995 Annexure B – Isoperibol and Static Jacket Bomb Calorimeter Below is an extract from this International Standard: Principle The Characteristic feature of isoperibol calorimeters is the isothermal jacket. The temperature of the surrounding thermostat is kept constant throughout the experiment by active control. The static jacket calorimeter has a thermal capacity such that, even without active control, its temperature remains nearly constant during measurements. In both cases there is a flow of heat between the calorimeter itself and the thermostat. Calorimeters surrounded by thermally insulating material behave largely as static jacket calorimeters. DIN 51900-2: 2003-05 Below is an extract from this International Standard: 3 Principle The calorimetric bomb prepared as specified in DIN51900-1 is placed in a calorimeter can, which is filled with water and surrounded by an isoperibol or static jacket insulating jacket. After temperature has equalized and the fore period has elapsed, the fuel sample is fired and the increase in temperature is recorded. Recording is terminated at the end of the after period. The gross calorific value of the sample material is calculated from the corrected temperature rise and the effective heat capacity of the calorimeter. NOTE: The specified method using an isoperibol or static jacket calorimeter covers all procedures in which the temperature of the calorimeter can differ from that of the jacket. As a result of the temperature difference, it is necessary to correct the rise in temperature for the heat exchange (1).
