Principal’s Message

Dear Parents and Guardians,

It is hard to believe that we are in the middle of May already and the end of the school year is in sight. We will continue to focus on our academics through the next several weeks of school. Our ASK testing is complete! I would like to thank our parents for making sure our children were present in school, on time, and ready to do their best on the test. The ASK tests were certainly demanding and required a great deal of focus from our students. Having our students prepared and focused gave them the advantage to successfully rise to the challenge. We would like to also thank our PTO for recognizing the students’ hard work and dedication by treating them to an Italian ice treat at the end of their testing. The PTO also generously donated money towards a gift card for each cycle, which was raffled off and won by students who earned points by participation in pre-test and test week activities. Congratulations to all the winners!

Our spring choral, band and orchestra concerts will be held during the next week. I have heard the students practicing and they sound amazing! What talented students we have here at Intermediate North! Our spring sports are also coming to an end of their seasons. Our students have reached new heights and many of them have improved upon their “personal bests” as the seasons progressed.

Our eighth graders are getting closer to graduation time. The dance will be held on Friday, June 8 from 6- 8 pm. Our graduation ceremony will be held at the Pine Belt Arena at 7:00 pm on June 12. Due to the size of our graduating class, each graduate will receive a maximum of five tickets. Details regarding distribution will be forth coming.

Please have a safe and enjoyable Memorial Day as summer is beginning to approach.

STUDENT COUNCIL NEWS Intermediate North's Student Council has had a busy year! We have sold treats and drinks at all the dances, collected coats for those in need, assisted with our annual food drive and done extensive fundraising for the March of Dimes. Our fundraising has included several popcorn sales, breakfast sales, smoothie sales, penny wars and even taping a teacher to the wall for donations. BUT we are not finished yet! We now are planning our decorations for the graduation dance. The theme is an Evening in Paris and we will transform the entryway, commons area and the cafeteria to make the night special for our graduates! We are in the process of collecting supplies for our decor. Our wish list includes artificial and live potted plants, lots of twinkle lights and bistro sets which will be returned to the owners, and lots and lots of glitter. Thank you for your support and interest in our Student Council.

Einstein would have been proud of the students who participated in the 2012 Jersey Shore Science Fair. On March 17th, students from Toms River Intermediate North traveled to The Richard Stockton College of New Jersey to participate in the regional science fair. Students used the scientific method to find answers to their questions; questions about chemistry, questions about botany, questions about biology. Judges quizzed each student about their projects. After much discussion and deliberation the winners were chosen. The winners were: Daria Husni - Third Place Honorable Mentions - Alexis Gebbia, Frances Sunga, Kaitlyn Massarelli, Cara Sciorilli, Bradley Collier, and Kristina George

GIRLS TRACK “To give anything less than your best is to sacrifice the gift.” With a group of girls 125 strong, the Intermediate North Girls Track Team has been blessed with many gifts and diverse tal-ent. Yet the reason that the girls have been undefeated thus far for the season, lies much deeper. Almost every athlete has come to practice each day with a smile and a positive atti-tude. Whether running perimeters around the school, practic-ing hurdle drills or hand-offs, or learning techniques for throw-ing a shotput or discus, our girls have shown their willingness to work hard.

Great examples of leadership have also sprung forth in athletes like Lynnea Forlenza, whose sense of discipline and fierce determination has inspired the younger girls on the team. 8th grade distance runners Julia Duriske, and Danielle DeSantis have trained hard and maintained a positive attitude, despite injuries and minor set-backs. They lead the younger runners with poise and conviction, and are al-ways in good spirits, no matter how difficult the work out may be.

6th graders Melissa Wilhelm and Kelli Buell are two strong examples of the many girls who will try anything, and always go the extra mile for the team. Narelle Johnson and Kristina Marasco have made great strides in shotput because they list well, and work hard each day.

Coaches Ward, Pappas and Austin are so proud of all of their girls who have given their personal best throughout the 2012 season.

We couldn’t have asked for two more perfect days to give back to the environment that is so gracious to us. Cycles 83 and 84 were both invited to visit the New Jersey Audubon Society’s Hovnanian Sanctuary to help restore the Atlantic White Cedar Trees in the Pine Barrens. This cross-curricular field trip extended beyond the classroom. Our science teachers educated the students about the White Cedar Trees, which included why this particular tree thrived in acidic, swampy water, why the restoration was a necessity and what we can do as a community

outside of the classroom to help. We couldn’t just plant the seedlings just anywhere! That is where our math teachers came into our field trip. Each of the seedlings needed to be planted at least eight feet apart from each other. Students also learned how wood is measured in units called cords. The history teachers were hard at work demonstrating the historical aspect of White Cedar Trees. Did you know that most house roof

shingles, from the Revolutionary War time period, were made from this particular tree? Or that in the 1930’s we had approximately 100,000 acres of White Pine Trees and today we have approximately 38,000? We also learned that the area most populated with the White Pine Tree’s reached from Maine to Florida. Language arts teachers had a field day with writing activities that not only helped recall the importance of this field trip but also helped create several writing activities to prepare our eighth grade students for NJ Ask8.

New Jersey’s Atlantic White Cedar tree population has been steadily declining, which

is where the eighth grade students jumped into action. Cedar wood is a precious commodity because it is very durable, mold and insect resistant, light in weight and strong. It’s most valuable application for this particular wood to be used in construction of homes, furniture, roofing shingles, etc. Atlantic White Cedar seedlings are also prey to the White Tail Deer. The NJ Audubon Society has implemented a massive restoration project which will help build up the dwindling cedar population. Between the two cycles, our students were able to plan approximately 5,000 cedar seedlings. The PRIDE and sense of ACCOMPLISHMENT on our students faces, was PRICELESS! The NJAS has also invited many volunteers from the community to help with this project. Consider contacting them to get involved.

This May, several Intermediate North actors will be bringing their anti-bullying message to 4th and 5th graders at Citta, North Dover, West Dover, and Walnut Street Elementary Schools, with guidance from Mrs. Zuzic.

Two years ago, two Intermediate East staff members piloted an anti bullying program entitled, “Stop the Drama.” The premise was to take essays written by several elementary school 4th and 5th graders about their personal experiences with bullying and harassment. These writings were then converted into a 45 minute “situational theatre,” experience. The actors were selected from the musical theatre cast and they write and create the show itself. Due to its incredible success, this program was brought to all the elementary schools within the district last year.
