Snowflake Festival
Head down to Kinsmen Beach for the per-fect winter day on Friday, January 18. The Snowflake Festival goes from 5 to 9 pm and includes fire pits and live music featur-ing Fairwater 54. The Bonspiel on the Lake will be running from 4 pm on into the night with the Legion warming and cooking hut set up for every-one to enjoy. The Taste of the Valley food event runs from 6 to 8 pm, a great chance to sample tasty dishes from several valley restau-rants. Bring along your skates, or just enjoy watching the action. The festival has a great finale with fire-works on the lake at 8 pm. This is a fantas-tic evening event to liven up January.
Aging
Old age used to just be in my head. Now it seems to be in my joints too.
Elvis Tribute Artist
Elvis comes to town on Saturday, January 19. International award-winning Elvis trib-ute artist Adam Fitzpatrick takes over the stage at the Horsethief Creek Pub, with the show starting at 8:30 pm. Elvis was always a crowd-pleaser and Ad-
am does a great job bringing that to the stage. It is a fun night. Adam’s act includes all three eras of Elvis’s musical career. Tickets are $30, which is a much better deal than a flight to Vegas.
Bonspiel on the Lake
One of the biggest recreational sporting events of the season in the valley is com-ing up on next January 18-21. The Lake Spiel hosts 64 teams for three days of curl-ing on the ice down near Kinsmen Beach. The spiel sells out every year with a huge waiting list but it is still an incredible event to go down and watch. The Invermere Le-gion will be hosting a warming hut with a great menu of hot and cold food and drink items. Curling begins at 4 pm on Friday and goes deep into the night. The last teams will leave the ice at about 1:30 am. The finals are at 3 pm on the Sunday. Ice conditions are crazy for curling so this is a great event for all skill levels. It is uplift-ing for rookies and humbling for the experi-enced curlers. It is awesome. Lots of volunteers are needed as this is the top fundraiser for the Curling Centre. Stop in and see if you can help.

Overcoming Seasonal Depression
The changing seasons can affect us with winter blues, summertime smoke and more. It is easy to feel a bit down. Attend the seminar, ‘Overcoming Seasonal Depression for all Ages’ happening Wednesday, January 24, 6 to 8 pm at the Christ Church Trinity. Enjoy 3 keynote speakers. Admission is by donation to the Columbia House Healing Gardens. Light refresh-ments will be served.

Who sings slightly lower than a tenor? What do you call a person whose car has been repossessed? How do you make a sidewalk? See page 9.
Calling All Writers
Do your 2019 dreams include writing a book, your memoirs, or even just writing more? The Mountain Hub hosts a regular, free writers’ meet-up, with the next evening event set for 6 to 7:30 pm on Thursday, January 17. Get inspired, find support and share your work with other local writers.
Follow Your Dreams
They told me I’d never be good at poetry because I’m dyslexic. But so far I’ve made three jugs and a vase, and they’re lovely.
Locals’ Day at Fairmont
Fairmont Hot Springs Resort invites local residents to come enjoy the ski hill for just $2 on Saturday, January 19. Locals’ Day starts at 9:30 am. If you haven’t explored Fairmont’s runs yet this year, it’s the perfect day to check out some new slopes.
Ski Season
It is definitely the time of year to strap on the boards, whether it is cross-country or alpine skiing that you enjoy. The pleasure of fresh air, sunshine, beauti-ful scenery and exercise make cross-country skiing a fantastic activity. We have lots of venues in the valley so get out and try it. The rush of gravity and speed kick in pretty good with alpine skiing. Both Fairmont and Panorama offer lift tickets, equipment rent-als, lessons and more. Try out the tubing parks.
More Daylight
We are only a couple weeks since the sol-stice but I am already noticing a bit longer days. It is just another thing to love about this time of year.

Robservations
We live in a world full of complainers. Un-fortunately, I am one of them. I have really spent a lot of effort in changing that but I still catch myself whining more than I should. I mean, it is okay to talk openly about your own issues. That might help solve a few. But it is not really okay to moan about what others have going on. That is more judg-mental than anything. Don’t like how they maintain their yard, how fast they drive on your street, how loud their kids are, how they do their job, what music they play or anything else about someone? Well there is really only one thing to do about that. You don’t have the right to try to change them. You have to change your attitude. What they do is really not your business and should not really bother you. Life would be better for everyone if you offered help and support, maybe even tried to understand why things are the way they are. Happiness is within all of us. We just have to find a way to release it and let it take over our lives. WE must learn to see the good and the fun in every situation and to share those thoughts and moments with everyone that we can.
Not Sure
I seem to have lost my mood ring last night. I’m not really sure how I feel about that.
No Trivial Matter
We are into the spring session of Wednes-day Night Trivia at The Station Pub. It runs weekly from 7 to 9 pm. The weekly prizes are fantastic, some cash and some sponsored prizes but it is the $5,000 Westjet prize that I am striving for now. Every time you play your name is entered into the draw happening at the end of the season.
Fishing Derby
Remember the Kinsmen Fishing Derby is coming up on Saturday, January 26 on Lake Windermere. Registration will begin at 8 am at The Station Pub for the all-day event. The cost is $35 and includes a deli-cious burger delivered to your fishing post and a chance for some great cash prizes. Prizes are awarded for the 3 largest ‘non-game’ fish, the smallest fish and largest kid’s fish. It is a perfect valley event and one that I look forward to every year.

Watson’s Waddle
I must say that I have been enjoying this winter. It has been nice to be back in the Columbia Valley for it. Last year life was based out of a senior’s strata in Castlegar. Not nearly as much walking room. I am loving all the scents that are hidden in the snow and release at different times. Poor Rob gets bored on our walks as he lets me spend a lot of time sniffing. The temperature has been perfect. Cool and refreshing, but not too cold. I have been having lots of fun on the lakes as we meet skiers, skaters and fisherfolks plus lots of other dogs. I must say that I love meeting all breeds of dogs. Every one has its own unique fea-tures and personalities. I certainly can’t tell by breed whether or not a dog will be friendly. We are all individuals and raised a bit differently.
What Year Was It?
Nixon was re-elected by a huge landslide and then later forced to resign over Wa-tergate, ‘The Godfather’ was released, the VW Beetle sold its 15 millionth car to be-come the most popular car ever sold, digi-tal watches and artificial hearts were in-vented and Gwyneth Paltrow was born. What year was it? See page 10.
Thanks a Lot
So many people help me in so many ways. I am very blessed. Thanks to all who have helped with the paper. Also a huge thanks to the firewood fairies that have been help-ing me out. And the food fairies. I have great neighbours, great landlords and live in a caring community.

Kidney Failure
So I am back travelling to Cranbrook once a week for hemodialysis anyways. My home peritoneal dialysis is not clearing all the toxins well enough. Really I should be going two or three times a week but I will just try to combine the two systems for a little bit. A technician is coming to check my house to see if it would work for home hemodialy-sis. They test water quality so that might be interesting as there are times when the water is pretty brown at my place. I will have to set up a new room for the hemodialysis. It will involve a machine that actually takes my blood out of my body to clean it. To start with I will hook up to the lines in my chest but it is much more effi-cient to use a fistula, which a ‘super-vessel’ in the arm. I will be looking for a hospital bed so I can do dialysis in a sitting or lying down and sleeping position. If anyone has one avail-able please let me know. This is actually all happening pretty quick-ly. I will be headed back to Trail pretty soon for a couple weeks for training, prob-ably Kelowna for a surgery or two. Crappy overall but something to write about anyways.
Liquor Lingo
It’s no longer called “box wine.” The classy term is “cardboardeax.”
Selling via your Website
If you’re interested in selling things online through your website, head over to the Mountain Hub on Tuesday, January 22 for the weekly lunch and learn. Megan will offer an introduction to Shopify from noon until 1 pm. Online stores are a great way to expand your business beyond the valley.

My Progress
Still a couple more weeks until I do blood-work and meet with my oncologist. I will get an idea about where my multiple mye-loma is at that time. In the meantime it is basically keeping up on the vitamin D, cannabis oil, lemon wa-ter, turmeric, frankincense, healthier eat-ing, exercise and so on. I am definitely not feeling a bunch stronger or healthier at this point. I seem to have hit a wall and I am not sure if it is due to kid-ney stuff or cancer stuff. It is definitely af-fecting my lifestyle. Not knowing if I have enough strength to participate in events such as Snow Golf and the Lake Spiel is very disheartening. Depressing really. Anyways, here’s hoping that things play out pretty good. It is a bit strange not really knowing where things are at and what will be next.
Rising Costs
Remember when air at a gas station was free? Now it is usually a dollar or two to fill your tire. That is inflation for you.
New Feature
We are going to learn a bit about the health of our lakes with submissions from the Columbia Lake Stewardship Society. This week’s article discusses oxygen lev-els which I try to apply to fishing tech-niques. We shall see.
Water Wise
Did you know: dissolved oxygen (D.O.) -- the amount of free oxygen that is not bond-ed to another element in a liquid -- is a key indicator of lake health? If there is too much or too little D.O. in a water body, then it can have significant effects on the organisms inhabiting it. D.O. is essential for many aquatic organisms because it plays an essential role in their respiratory process. Species that live near the top of a lake, such as shallow water fish, require 4-15 mg/L of D.O. to survive; species that live near the bottom of a lake require just 1-6 mg/L.
Farmers Market
The Invermere Farmers and Artisans Mar-ket is starting to plan for this season. One change will be the location. They are hop-ing to set up in the parking lot behind the liquor store rather in the alley that attaches to it. It is always a great market.

Side Effects
Every day is so different from the next, it is crazy. Some days my balance is awful and I am now using a walking stick quite often. I really don’t want to fall down. I get a bit light-headed and almost a bit confused sometimes. That can be a side effect of high urea, one of the reasons I have to do more hemodialysis. I seem to getting more neuropathy, which is the nerve damage in the hands and feet. That is related to the balance thing but also to dropping a lot of stuff and a bit of difficulty with many fine motor skills with my hands. It is tricky picking things up quite often. Sucks really. But by far the worst is the itchiness. It is hard to explain the feeling of having itchy spots appearing all over the body con-stantly. It is tolerable during most of the day but when bedtime comes around, holy smokes. Sleep is slow to arrive but is in-credible relief when it does.

Did you see the January and February scheduled events for the valley! It is amaz-ing with something for everyone. Do you skate, curl, play hockey, golf or just enjoy watching? With this weather it is hard to gauge how many layers of outside clothing to wear and of course that would depend on the activity you chose. If you find you don’t have the proper clothing then I would sug-gest a trip to the Invermere Thrift Store. It is amazing what you can find there and all at a good price.

Rockies Hockey
The Columbia Valley Rockies lost a close 2-1 battle to Spokane while Fernie pulled off a couple of wins. We have dropped back into third place with Golden not all that far behind anymore. The Rockies visit Fernie on Tuesday, printing day for The Valley Peak. Two big home games coming up this weekend. On Friday, January 18, the Rockies host the Kimberley Dynamiters. They follow that with the Golden Rockets visiting on Saturday, January 19. Let’s get those seats full and the air filled with cheering and support for our junior hockey team. We can all be part of the wins by offering inspiration.

Happy New Year
Happy is the key word folks. 2019 is upon us and we can each make a difference. Starting within ourselves, we all know what we could use to tweak a little bit to make things go a bit smoother. Try to not compare yourself with anyone regarding anything. This means that you should not judge yourself or others. We are all different in so many ways and on completely different journeys. Just enjoy it. Of course it is all easier said than done but The Valley Peak promises you that every little change feels good. Be kind. Be under-standing. Be forgiving. Be helpful. Believe me, it is worth it.
L8 on Stage in Radium
One of the valley’s favourite bands will play at the Horsethief Creek Pub on Mon-day, January 21. L8 is known for their folk-rock music and occasional covers. The show starts at 7 pm. There’s no cover charge at the door: save your cash for a drink and some excellent food. The shuttle will be standing by to get you home.

It’ll be yet another fabulous show at the Horsethief Creek Pub on Friday, January 25, with local drag queens April Storm and Chichi, plus some special guest stars, tak-ing over the stage at 9:30 pm. The big event is coming up in a couple weeks, the weekend of January 25-27. Lake Windermere has been in great shape this winter. Registration is filling fast in all divisions, (competitive, mixed, open rec serious, open rec fun). This tournament has been growing every year as a fundraiser for the Rockies hock-ey club. I asked the librarian if there were any books about paranoia. “Shhh..”, she whispered, “They are right behind you.”

Mountainfilm on Tour
Mountainfilm on Tour showcases culturally rich, adventure-packed, and inspiring docu-mentary films. There will be two shows, Friday and Saturday, February 8 and 9. This year the film ‘Children of the Columbia Valley’ featuring Invermere’s own Christina Lustenberger, and Dane Tudor, two big mountain skiers who grew up on the shores of the Columbia, as they travel up the waterway that crafted them. From Red Mountain through to Kinbasket Lake, Dane and Lusti move northwards through a profoundly unique mountain cul-ture. One distinctly tied to the land on a massive scale. Tickets at Crazy Soles in Invermere.
Where I Was
The photo on page 6 is a pretty obvious one. The ice is ready for the 35th Annual Bonspiel on the Lake. See you there.
Puzzle Pleasure
So when I was home with Mom at Christ-mas we worked on a jigsaw puzzle togeth-er. It was a challenge but we finished on my final night there. Unfortunately, we lost a single piece. It was a new puzzle. Mom vacuums lots, haha. Anyway I have set up a puzzle here in In-vermere. And it is such a great metaphor for so much in life. At the beginning it was almost overwhelming and seemed nearly impossible. But you take that first step and sort out the edge pieces and do the out-side. Then you pick a colour or pattern and do a small section. Soon more and more of it is falling in place and every piece you put in makes it a bit easier for the next piece. A thousand tiny steps or accomplishments to complete a major project. Very satisfying.
Marital Incongruity
I just read that 4,153,237 people got mar-ried last year. Shouldn’t that be an even number?
Awesome Volunteers
Last Sunday was the installation of the boards and light standards in the ice for the Bonspiel on the Lake. It is a very labour-intensive job that requires many hands Thanks to all the folks who did turn out, the morning went very smoothly. It is amazing how every helper makes a difference. This is the 35th year of the spiel and it has been put together by volunteers every year.
Advertimes
Now is definitely a bit of a quiet time in the
valley. A few less people come through at this time of year. That is why it is important to reach out to the locals. They are the ones that are around and spending money this time of year. What is the best way to reach the locals? With The Valley Peak of course. It is so affordable ($25/ad or so) and is very well-read both in the valley and online. It will connect your business to its customers. Just ask any of my current advertisers. Contact The Valley Peak and begin adver-tising with the paper that wants to be part of your success. Contact info is on the top of every page.
Home Cooking
Cooking has really changed in our society. Food preparation has become hurried and cumbersome. A ‘duty’ to stay alive. But really, cooking should be a chance to share time together and express your artis-tic side in the food that nourishes you. Cooking really is fun, especially if you are doing it with someone else. And sitting down for a good healthy, home-cooked meal with the family is always a positive experience.
