THE DCFA TRIP TO LANGAGE ENERGY PARK

EVERAL OF OUR DCFA volunteers took part in a trip to Langage Energy Park on Monday, 3

rd October 2011 where

we were joined by some members of the Plymouth Laryngectomy Club (PLC). We were given a guided tour of the plant and an extremely interesting presentation by Mr. Roy BAILEY, the Operations Manager of Centrica Energy. Roy made it a really

fun time... even though what they produce is a very serious business. That was obvious when we had to get dressed up in hard hats and fluorescent jackets.

MEDIA SPEEDMATCHING HRISTINE REID and GEOFF READ spent an evening at a Media Speedmatching Event in Exeter on Wednesday

28th

September 2011. The event was organised by the Small Charities Commission in partnership with the Media Trust.

So what is speedmatching? It’s a bit like speed-dating. Ten charities and ten media professionals from the charity and corporate sectors. Each charity gets five minutes to speak to each professional and get on-the-spot advice or ideas where possible about any kind of media / communications issue or challenge you might have, for example, getting local media coverage, improving your publicity materials or giving your charity a rebrand, etc. If a charity wants to work with a particular professional further, they’d mark this on their match card and if their professional requests to work with them too, we’ll put them in touch. All this plus drinks, nibbles and a friendly atmosphere, absolutely free of charge!

We made a few useful friends and so the networking goes on!

PLYMOUTH FUNDRAISER GROUP MEETING

EOFF READ ATTENDED a Group Meeting on Tuesday, 25th

October 2011 at Routeways in Devonport. Christopher

LAING of the Big Lottery Fund was the Guest Speaker and gave a very interesting presentation. If anyone wishes to know more about this Group then please contact: Paul READ at [email protected]

CIEH LEVEL-2 AWARDS IN FOOD SAFETY

EVEN DCFA MEMBERS attended a course of instruction at Lanivet, Cornwall on Thursday, 27

Reflecting sector-specific needs these food safety qualifications are required to address new National Occupational Standards. In line with this demand, the CIEH Level 2 Awards in Food Safety have been designed to address the food safety and hygiene needs of the catering, manufacturing and retail sectors.

Outline Programme The qualifications cover the following topics:

Legislation

Food safety and hygiene hazards

AN ARTICLE BY HAZEL ALEXANDER DCFA Co-opted Member to the Board of Trustees

T’S AT THIS TIME of year I always put one or two extra items in my shopping trolley each week to go into my ‘Christmas

cupboard’. This, combined with food-related gifts, and that frantic last minute just-in-case shop I always feel the need to do, all add up to an awful lot of food in the house. I’m lucky because I can buy these extras, but for some, just getting the food basics is difficult. Fortunately there are some fantastic organisations working to provide subsidised food and meals in Plymouth and DCFA has been working hard to get additional supplies to these organisations and keep perfectly good food out of landfill. I know that some of this extra food I’m buying will end up in the bin, and through being a Friend of DCFA I’m now also aware of how much food manufacturers are putting in their bins. We have a range of information available to explain what’s going to waste and why, and what can be done to change that, including a website, brochures, talks and rolling presentations. Whilst we are always looking for volunteers to take on some of the practical tasks that keep DCFA going, we also need people to get the message out about food waste. Looking at some of our information and talking to friends and family about it is a little extra that you can do that can potentially add up to a lot of people knowing about what DCFA are trying to do.

Hazel ALEXANDER Co-opted Member to the DCFA Board of Trustees

A DELIGHTFUL ANALOGY HEN WE GAVE a PowerPoint Presentation to a faith group at the Hope Baptist Church in Plymouth recently,

one of them said to us... “DCFA is getting the bits of grain that fall off the wheat plant... just in the same way as the poor people used to do in biblical times!”.

So very true!

OTHER NEWS AST CORNWALL COUNCIL FOR Voluntary Services (ECCVS). DCFA was saddened to read on the ECCVS website that

they were to cease operations on Sunday, 31st October 2011.

Several DCFA volunteers have been fortunate enough to have received free courses of instruction from this very important outlet and we are so sorry to see it all end. Our sincere thanks go to Ms. Anna HOYLE, the Strategic Development Manager and also to Mr. Dave PHILLIPS, CIEH Food Safety Instructor.

HE PLYMOUTH THIRD Sector Consortium (PTSC). DCFA is a member of this consortium which has now changed

its name to Community & Social Action Plymouth (CASAP). And it changed its logo at the same time. This means that DCFA will have to update all its documentation accordingly.

EAL FOOD STORE for Plymouth City Centre? Food Plymouth partnership invite you
