Iamwritingtoyouwithregardstothecommitteesdiscussionofaproposednewinterprovincialbridge
intheEastEndofOttawa.TheDalhousieCommunityAssociationissupportiveofanyeffortstoremove
trucktrafficfromOttawasurbancore.A,newcrossingatKettleIslandseemstoofferrealhopein
achievingthis.Theprojectistechnicallyfeasible,hasalreadyundergonearigorousandlength
environmentalassessment,andwouldremovealargenumberoftrucksfromdowntown.
However,foranewbridgetoachievetheaffectofremovingtrucktrafficitsconstruction mustbetiedto
removingtruckroutesthroughdowntownOttawa.Theprinciplefunctionofanewcrossingmustbeto
provideamoresensiblewayfortrucktraffictocrosstheOttawariver,improvingsafetyandtrafficin
centralOttawa.Aspartofthisprocess,itisessentialthatbothKingEdwardAve.andBoothSt.be
removedastruckroutes.RemovingjustKingEdwardwouldhavetheeffectofshiftingasignificant
portionoflargetrucksnottoaneweast-endcrossing,butthroughtheheartofresidentialLittleItaly
andChinaTown.Removingtrucktrafficfromtheurbancoreisanimportantgoal;letsmakesurethatit
isdoneproperly.
IwouldnotethatthereisanopportunitytodothisaspartofOttawasongoingreviewofthe
TransportationMasterPlan.
