Fr. Johnson Parackal, SDBExecutive Director, DBI

As we bid farewell to yet another year we realize that it has been an exceptionally eventful one, for us at DBI.

I thank Almighty God for accompanying us on the journey of life this past year. I thank my collaborators for making 2013 a year of growth, progress and accomplishment. At DBI, as a team, we dreamt, we journeyed, we achieved.

Among the many achievements that have come through us this year, I would like to highlight a few recent ones: the celebration of the Foundation Day of DBI and 'JourNEI 2013', which provided a platform to the management students to showcase their talents and interact with up-coming entrepreneurs from other institutes. I congratulate the faculty and students of DBIM for making the event a grand success.

We are ourselves amazed at what can be packed into twelve months without compromising a bit on quality. Over 1500 heads of Government schools of Assam have undergone the five day residential training programme we offer on Leadership and Management. The training, supported by RMSA has been a major success. There have also been several other training programmes organized for principals, teachers, officers, administrators and others in leadership, administrative and management positions.

The Bosco Skill Mission (BSM) for BPL youth, supported by Employment Generation Mission (EGM), Govt. of Assam continues to be one of our flagship programs. Under the aegis of BSM, a total of 1400 rural youth have been trained in the past six months in House Keeping, Food & Beverages, Sales and Marketing and Refrigeration in nine of our centres. More than 80% of those trained have already been placed with various organizations and companies. Numerous stories of outstanding performance by our youth give us tremendous satisfaction and spur us on to greater engagement. To cite an instance, Garib Das, a young boy who was trained at DBI joined work some months ago for a salary of Rs. 5000. Today he draws a monthly salary of Rs.45000 and works in Abudabi.

It is hugely satisfying to learn that within the past one year, more than 4000 deprived children and about a 1000 disadvantaged youth have benefitted from the vocational courses that we offer at Kokrajhar and Chirang districts of lower Assam. The IT related vocations courses offered to school and college youth along with soft skill training and other outreach services are proving to be a life-changing package that has the potential to transform the region.

Oh yes, looking back at our life's voyage, I can see it has been a golden trip. As we bid farewell to another extraordinary year, we thank God for what we have been able to achieve until now. At the same time, with deep appreciation I place on record the unflinching support and commitment of all our staff and faculty towards the realization of our dreams for the youth of this region.

A great deal has happened in the past at DBI that is commendable. But we do not rest on our laurels. We believe, the best, as the poet says, is yet to be! May the song of the angels announcing good tidings to people of good will be heard by us this Christmas and throughout the New Year!

Happy Christmas and a bright New Year 2014!

60 young men from Amguri and Bhooteachang graduated in driving on October 17, 2013. After undergoing the three months training in their respective centers, they were given certificates during the graduation ceremony held at Don Bosco Institute Guwahati. Fr. Varghese, the Director of Social Forum was the Chief Guest on this occasion. Fr. Johnson Parackal and other staff members of DBI also were present for the occasion.

It may be mentioned that the training which they have received not only to develop their skill in a particular job but also enabled them to be self confident and motivated them to work hard and earn an honest living. Character formation, learning to live together, other soft skills along with spoken

English, were part and parcel of their programme. However, they not only have gained knowledge in driving skills, but also they were also given training on poultry, piggery and farming. In three months these youngsters picked up English which created more confident in them to step forward in the competitive world. Most of them got employed as drivers immediately after the training. Even some of them started self employment too.

DBI has two driving centers one at Amguri, Kokrajar and another in Bhooteachang ,Udalguri. Apart from driving for the boys, the dropout girls too are offered training in weaving and tailoring.
