DB2 OLAP Server V8.2 — Highlights

• ASO — Support for aggregate storage databases(provided by a new aggregate storage kernel) enablesdramatic scalability improvements in both databaseaggregation time and dimensional scalability. Theaggregate storage kernel does not replace the currentblock storage kernel. Aggregate storage databasestypically address read-only, “rack and stack”applications that have large dimensionality, such asthe following applications:

− Customer analysis — Data is analyzed from anydimension and there are potentially millions ofcustomers

− Procurement analysis — Many products are trackedacross many vendors

− Logistics analysis — Near real-time updates ofproduct shipments

Aggregate storage databases with many dimensionscalculate (aggregate) in minutes.

• Outline paging — Aggregate storage databases mayhave outlines with millions of members. Support foroutline paging significantly reduces memory usage, enhancing the end-user experience. Depending on theoperating system and available memory, you cancreate outlines with up to 20 million members.

• Unicode (UTF8) enabled server — DB2 OLAP Servernow supports a single database with data frommultiple locales, through new Unicode support.Customers can now more easily engage in globaldevelopment and easily provide all users access todata, regardless of their location and localepreference. DB2 OLAP Server will have two modes,non-Unicode and Unicode. Each DB2 OLAP Serverapplication is designated as a non-Unicode-modeapplication (the default), or a Unicode-modeapplication. Administration Services, MaxL, and theAPI enable the migration of non-Unicode-modeapplications to Unicode mode. Alias Tables will beavailable so that users can access views ofinformation in their choice of language. Unicodesupport also extends to the following features: MDX,query logging, hybrid analysis, triggers, and datamining.

• Metadata security — Many customers wish to filtermetadata members so that they can restrict the abilityof users to view these members. DB2 OLAP Servercurrently filters the data values, but not the membernames and aliases. This release of DB2 OLAP Servernow adds the ability for administrators to set securityon metadata members to provide tailored metadataviews to end users. This will greatly enhance thecustomer′s ability to customize the end-userexperience and to deliver extranet applications to theirvendors, suppliers, and customers over the Web.

• Remote Authentication Module — The RemoteAuthentication Module is an optional component of theDB2 OLAP Server security platform. The securityplatform is a framework that provides DB2 OLAPServer applications with external authentication andsingle sign-on capabilities. The Remote AuthenticationModule is applicable to the following circumstances:

− DB2 OLAP Server is deployed in a UNIXenvironment with authentication occurring againsta Windows domain.

204-173 -2-

Page 3: DB2 OLAP Server V8.2 delivers powerful capabilities built ...

− DB2 OLAP Server is deployed in a Windowsenvironment, and users must log in to more thanone Windows domain without changing the trustrelationships.

• Triggers on write operations — This release addssupport for triggers based on write and loadoperations. Triggers can be used to track certaintypes of state changes, create constraints to watch forover a cube area, and track if the constraints areviolated during updates (events) in the area. If aviolation is detected, triggers enable the administratorto proactively send e-mail alerts or wirelessmessages, or spool violated cells into a known file forfurther action. DB2 OLAP Server V8.2 supportsseveral new trigger features:

− On-update triggers and after-update triggers arenow supported. The new after-update triggers fireonly after all updates to the database are completefor a specific transaction.

− In MaxL, create trigger statements are supportedas well as the existing create or replace triggerstatements.

− For on-update triggers, you can now choose to addboth old and new data values to the trigger spoolfile.

− You can set triggers for databases in Unicode-modeapplications.

• MaxL enhancements: With DB2 OLAP Server V8.2,MaxL now includes the following enhancements:

− MaxL DML (XML for Analysis) — DB2 OLAP Servernow enables access to multidimensional data andmetadata through MaxL DML (data-manipulationlanguage). MaxL DML is based on MDX, the XMLfor Analysis specification and is a robust languageand expression syntax for creating and queryingcube data. You can use either the MaxL Shell(essmsh) or MDX Editor in Administration Servicesto execute MDX queries.

− MaxL support for Data Definition Language (DDL)operations such as creation, deletion, updating ofusers, applications, databases, and databaseobjects.

− New grammar to support aggregate storageapplication and database operations.

− MaxL support of Unicode.

− Addition to the display object statement, fordisplaying only locked objects.

− Additions to the alter session statement: Oneaddition for setting MDX display options, and oneaddition enabling compression of the security file.

− Additions to the create trigger statement, forspecifying on-update triggers (the default) orafter-update triggers. After-update triggers aresupported only in traditional block-storage mode.

− Ability to view and delete data-monitoring logs(logs created by triggers) from within the MaxLShell.

− Filter enhancements: Lines can be added to filterdefinitions using alter filter. A new level of filteraccess is added to create filter and alter filterstatements.

− Improved STDOUT, STDIN, STDERR: Errors can beredirected to STDERR. STDERR and STDOUT canbe redirected to a MaxL output log.

− Improved Database-Related Grammar: The text ofdatabase notes is displayed as part of displaydatabase. Database free-space recovery isavailable using alter database statement. Explicitrestructuring is available in alter database.

− Display location aliases per application.

− Display port information.

− Full ESSCMD functionality available in MaxL.

• Attribute and drill-through support for hybrid members— DB2 OLAP Server now enables hybrid storedmembers to have attributes associated with them. This greatly enhances the types of applications thatDB2 OLAP Server can support. For instance, a DB2OLAP Server application can now include a largecustomer dimension stored in the relational data storeand have demographics information associated withthis customer dimension as attribute dimensions. Inaddition, drill-through support is now extended tohybrid members and attribute dimensions. This meansthat hybrid levels and attribute dimensions can nowbe present in a drill-through reports intersection level.

• Data mining Java framework — DB2 OLAP Server nowincludes a data-mining framework. Users can nowleverage data mining algorithms using DB2 OLAPServer and their existing analytical data. A numberof data mining algorithms are supported out-of-the-boxand additional algorithms can be added to theframework through customization.

• Reduced Security-File Fragmentation — Fragmentationof the essbase.sec file can gradually develop whenDB2 OLAP Server entities such as users, groups, applications, or databases are removed or changed. This can slow down security-related performance. With this release, the security file is compacted eachtime the Agent is shut down. Additionally, you cancompact the security file without shutting down theAgent.

• API — DB2 OLAP Server V8.2 provides new featuresand enhancements for improved API functionality tosupport:

− Aggregate storage databases.

− Various trigger functions.

− C Outline API function.

− Performance improvements for querying members.

− New API function that verifies the Rules file.

− More control of currency conversions after loadingdata

− Calculation script control over the create blocks onequation feature

− Calculation script control over #MISSING blockcreation

• Dimension build — DB2 OLAP Server V8.2 includes thefollowing rules file enhancements for buildingdimensions:

− Changes to existing member storage properties− Replacement of UDA values− Dimension arrangement for optimal performance

• Metadata sampling — DB2 OLAP Server is amultidimensional database engine that providessupport for ad hoc analysis. Such analysis is entirelydriven by the intuition of the analyst and can betime-consuming as data volume increases. Largecubes tend to have more dimensions and sometimesmore levels, making hierarchical navigation verycumbersome. DB2 OLAP Server V8.2 now includessupport for metadata sampling, which enables you toanalyze on large cubes with a focus on data trends orapproximate information in the initial stages. Becauseyou query on a sample of your data, retrieval is quick.Metadata sampling enables you to zoom in on aportion of the vast amount of data in your database ina fraction of the time that it usually takes to analyzethe whole database. You can view many samples ina small amount of time and make early decisions.Later, you can follow with organized data exploration. With the introduction of hybrid analysis, you can storepart of a DB2 OLAP Server cube in a relationaldatabase. Metadata sampling enables you to zoom inon all the data that you specify, whether it is inAnalytic Services or in an underlying relationaldatabase.

• Monitoring data changes (triggers) — The DB2 OLAPServer V8.2 triggers feature enables you to monitordata changes in a database efficiently. If data breaksthe rules that you have specified, DB2 OLAP Servercan send an e-mail (to a user or system administrator)or log the information in a file. You can create anddelete triggers using MaxL statements.

• Administration — DB2 OLAP Server V8.2 providesadditional or improved administration functionality inthe following areas:

− Application log enhancements− Multiple agent enhancements− Optimize outline for batch calculation− Explicit restructure command

• Delayed free space recovery — Improvements havebeen made to the free space recovery process, whichis the most expensive part of database recovery.Database recovery takes place any time you load an

application that ends abnormally. Changes have beenmade to the free space recovery process, as follows:

− Performance has been improved significantly.

− Free space recovery, which happenedautomatically before, is now delayed by default. The user must explicitly trigger free spacerecovery. A configuration option has been addedto specify whether or not to delay free spacerecovery by default.

− Explicit free space recovery has been added with anew MaxL grammar for alter database.

− The GETDBSTATS command adds two lines ofinformation about free space recovery.

− If free space is recoverable, the block counters areestimates and do not necessarily match the numberof existing blocks.

− A new C API function, EssRecoverDbFreeSpace,has been added.

− The ESB_DBSTATS_T structure has been changed.

• Server threads specified by application — Previously, the SERVERTHREADS configuration setting could onlyspecify a single server thread value for allapplications, meaning each application on the serverhad to use the same value. Now, users can choose tospecify a different number of server threads for certainapplications.

• Additional platform support and spreadsheet add-inchanges — With V8.2, DB2 OLAP Server adds AIX 5.2,Red Hat Linux AS 2.1, Microsoft Windows 2003, andSun Solaris 9 (Sun OS 5.0.9) to its list of supportedplatforms. For a complete list of supported operatingsystems, refer to the Software requirements section.Spreadsheet add-in for Lotus 1-2-3 is not shippedwith DB2 OLAP Server V8.2. • DB2 Cube Views support — DB2 OLAP IntegrationServer V8.2 supports DB2 Cube Views so that you canimport and export OLAP model and metaoutlinemetadata objects between DB2 Cube Views and DB2OLAP Integration Server. To take advantage of thiscapability, you first export your models ormetaoutlines to an XML file. The XML file maps DB2OLAP Integration Server metadata objects with DB2Cube Views metadata objects. The XML file is thenused to import the metadata objects between the DB2catalog and the DB2 OLAP Integration Servermetadata catalog.

• Support for DB2 UDB for OS/390 and z/OS V7 —With V8.2, DB2 OLAP Integration Server now includessupport for DB2 UDB for OS/390 and z/OS V7.

• Hybrid analysis enhancements — With V8.2, hybridanalysis is enhanced to include support for Unicode(UTF-8), Dynamic Time Series, and DB2 UDB forOS/390 and z/OS V7.

• Drill-through reporting to Web sites — DB2 OLAP Integration Server expands the options for

drill-through reports by giving you the capability ofspecifying a Web site as the data source. To takeadvantage of this option, you can easily customize thedrill-through SQL template by replacing the relationaldata source with an HTML source. DB2 OLAPIntegration Server passes the Web site to DB2 OLAPSpreadsheet Services, (or another drill-through client),which then launches the Web site in a browser.

• Drill-through to a secondary data source — In additionto enabling you to drill through to a Web site asdescribed earlier, DB2 OLAP Integration Server V8.2gives you an additional option for drill-through reportsby giving you the capability of replacing your primarydata source with any secondary data source for thereport.

• Drill-through reporting with attribute dimensions — InV8.2 of DB2 OLAP Integration Server, drill-throughreporting capabilities are greatly expanded forattributes. Now you can select attribute dimensionsand attribute members as OLAP intersections.

• Drill-through reporting with hybrid analysis members— In V8.2 of DB2 OLAP Integration Server, drill-throughreporting capabilities are greatly expanded for hybridanalysis members. Now you can select hybrid analysisdimensions and hybrid analysis member columns asOLAP intersections.

• Attribute support for hybrid analysis members — V8.2of DB2 OLAP Integration Server gives you the optionof associating attributes to hybrid analysis members. In earlier versions, attributes could not be tagged ashybrid analysis enabled hierarchies.

• Alternate hierarchy support for hybrid analysis — Asmentioned earlier, V8.2 of DB2 OLAP IntegrationServer expands the functionality of hybrid analysis bygiving you the option of associating hybrid analysismembers to attribute dimensions and selecting hybridanalysis member columns as intersections. DB2 OLAPIntegration Server V8.2 further expands thefunctionality of hybrid analysis by supporting alternatehierarchies within your hybrid analysis data.

• Shared user-defined members — In V8.2 of DB2 OLAPIntegration Server, you can designate your ownuser-defined members as shared members. Thisoption enables user-defined members to share storagespace with other members of the same name.

− Managing different versions of XML models andmetaoutlines

− Restoring a past version of an XML model ormetaoutline to the current version

• Extended prefix and suffix aliases functionality —Several business environments require multipleversions of data. For example, many companies keeptrack of order dates, shipment dates, payment-duedates, as well as multiple locations such asorder-origin city and destination city. This data oftenuses both original names and code names; forexample, Los Angeles and LA. To make tracking suchdata easier and more efficient, DB2 OLAP IntegrationServer V8.2 enables you to attach prefixes and suffixesto aliases when you perform member loads and dataloads. The attached prefixes and suffixes can takeseveral forms:

− Member names− Numeric values− Text values− Mix of numeric and text values

• Time-based incremental loads/updates — Using DB2OLAP Integration Server V8.2, you can performincremental updates, loading only data that haschanged or been added since your last data load. Tohelp you monitor data loads, DB2 OLAP IntegrationServer keeps track of data load information anddisplays it in your Metaoutline Properties dialog box.You can take advantage of this new feature if your facttable has a time-stamp column. The followinginformation is updated each time you perform a dataload:

− DB2 OLAP Server name− DB2 OLAP Server application name− DB2 OLAP Server database name− Date-time stamp of the last data load

• Enhanced logging — To assist you in verifying that dataloads are being performed correctly, DB2 OLAPIntegration Server V8.2 creates two files:

− dataloadrecord.txt file containing the first 1,000successfully loaded records

− hisdld.rul file containing the names of thedimensions loaded, followed by the leaf nodenumber of each dimension and member

• Additional DB2 OLAP Server settings support — DB2OLAP Integration Server V8.2 increases the numberof DB2 OLAP Server settings that can be loaded froma database column during a data load. These settingsare loaded from a database column in the same wayas a Consolidation attribute and a UDA are loaded.

− Comments− Currency name attribute− Currency category attribute

• Updated sample applications — With V8.2, DB2 OLAPIntegration Server updates its sample applicationsdatabase to demonstrate several new features andfunctionality. Among the features demonstrated in thenew sample applications are the following:

− SQL drill-through− SQL data load override− Pass-through SQL− Use of multiple data sources

• Automatic migration to V8.2 — When you create orupdate an OLAP Metadata Catalog for the first timewithin a new release of DB2 OLAP Integration Server,a set of scripts is automatically run, which enable youto migrate to the current release of DB2 OLAPIntegration Server from an earlier release.

-7- 204-173

Page 8: DB2 OLAP Server V8.2 delivers powerful capabilities built ...

• New XML data type definition (DTD) documents — V8.2of DB2 OLAP Integration Server provides two newdocuments that give details on OLAP model andmetaoutline XML Import/Export DTDs. The two newdocuments, XMLImport/Export OLAP Model DTD andXML Import/Export OLAP Metaoutline DTD areincluded in the standard documentation set. Each DTDelement is described in detail:

− Element name in full− Description of element, including its function− Explanation of parameters for element− Any special notes for element, if applicable

• Additional platform support — With V8.2, DB2 OLAPIntegration Server adds AIX 5.2, Red Hat Linux AS 2.1,Microsoft Windows 2003, and Sun Solaris 9 (Sun OS5.09) to its list of supported platforms. For a completelist of supported operating systems, refer to theSoftware requirements section.
