Oxbow Park and Zollman ZooLocated at 5731 County Road 105 Northwest just outside of Byron, Oxbow Park offers fun for the whole family. There is camping, a nature center, trails, and educational programs, as well as a zoo with a variety of animals to see, including otters, bears, and buffalo. Beaver Creek Valley State Park Known for its clear streams fed by the “Big Spring.” Its streams are home to brown and native brook trout. A hiking trail meanders along the stream and up into a maple-basswood and oak forest. Camping, hiking, birdwatching, trout fishing. County Road 1. 8am-3pm 507-724-2107

Canton SpeedwaySpend a Sunday afternoon racing Go-Karts at the newest track in Fillmore County. The season ends on October 7. Kids of all ages can win awards and have a fun-filled day racing with other kids at the track, located right on Highway 52 just outside of Canton.

Lost Creek Hiking TrailLost Creek Hiking Trail in Chatfield is different from the other trails in the area. Step directly into nature by walk-ing this wide range of terrain and ecosystems including forest, prairie, pasture, and agricultural land. The trail runs approximately 6 miles one way. The trail is open to the public with use limited to hiking and snowshoeing, as the trail surface is natural soil and grass. The trail is closed during firearm deer hunting season.

The Chatfield Center for the ArtsThe Center has plays and musicals, concerts, art shows, a museum, meeting space for senior citizen/community groups, events(weddings and school dances), an area to display local artwork and space for art shows. 405 Main Street south. 507-867-3810.

The Niagara CaveNiagara Cave is one of the most fascinating and unique geological attractions in the United States. Take a one-hour guided tour, where you will witness a waterfall, nearly 60 feet high, stalactites both delicate and massive, calcite flowstone, fossils that have been dated to over 400 million years old, and a wedding chapel in which over 400 weddings have been performed, plus much more.

Sinkhole SitesCome and see what a sinkhole looks like in person, and learn what they are and how they are formed at this inter-pretive center in Harmony, located on the Harmony-Preston Valley Trail. A walkway and steps lead you right into the sinkhole, a unique experience for anyone. The area has been used as a learning tool for students as well as visitors to the area.

The pumpkin patch is a fun place for everyone, with a corn maze, wagon rides, Go Karts, and animals, open in the fall. Just 4 ½ miles west of Decorah on Highway 9.

Vesterheim MuseumVesterheim Norwegian American Museum- Take a guided tour of the Vesterheim in Decorah and explore the diversity of American immigration through the lens of Norwegian-American experience. See historic and contemporary Nor-wegian folk and fine arts, take classes in Norwegian culture and folk art such as rosemaling, woodcarving, and wood-working. The museum is open daily from 9am-5pm from May through October, and 10am to 4pm from November through April.

Seed Savers ExchangeThe 890-acre farm, located six miles noth of Decorah, IA., on North Winn Road, is a living museum of historic plant and seed varieties. Thousands of heirlooms are rown in certified organic fields. The farm includes Preservation Gardens, Historic Orchard, ancient White Park Cattle, and the Lillian Goldman Visitors Center that offers a wide selection of heirloom seeds, horticultural books and garden gifts. Great River Ridge State TrailThe Great River Ridge State Trail runs for 13 miles between County Highway 9 just north of Eyota and 3rd Street SW just north of Wabasha Street in Plainview. The entire trail is paved and there is an additional adjacent trail with a natural surface for horseback riders and snowmobilers between County Highway 9 and the town of Elgin. The trail is wheelchair accessible, and is also good for cross-country skiing in the winter.

The Houston Nature CenterThe Houston Nature Center is focused on local wildlife – things that are in the area, used to be here, or show up on occasion. This includes a woolly mammoth tooth, an extinct giant bison skull, a gray wolf, an elk antler that was locally shed in the 1800s, and a mount of two white-tailed deer with locked antlers. The star of the center, is Alice, a Great Horned Owl. Summer programs are offered.

Oak Ridge/Wet Bark Recreation AreaWet Bark Recreation area offers 11 miles of horseback riding trails, hiking trails, six miles of designated mountain biking trails in the summer and 11 miles of ski touring and six miles of snowmobile trails in the winter. Camping: five primitive sites. Horse trailer parking area has picket lines and a small corral. The parking area allows for portable cor-rals. Horseback trails open May 1-November 1. Lanesboro’s Hydro-Electric Power Dam Waterfalls Riverview Park Lanesboro’s Hydro-Electric Power Dam Waterfalls Riverview Park contains an original 1868 stone dam that provides hydroelectric power to the town of Lanesboro. Electricity is generated from the hydro-wheel, or either of the diesel engines that are housed in the town’s utility plant.

The Root River & Harmony-Preston Valley State trail system The Root River trail system, located in southeastern MN, offers 60 miles of outstanding views of soaring limestone bluffs and Fillmore County’s rural landscape.

Hunting Southeastern Minnesota is known to have excellent deer and turkey hunting. Wildlife Management areas and nearby Richter Doer State Forest areas offer ample public hunting grounds. The scenery is magnificent and the bounty is plentiful.

The Root River The Root River has a gentle to moderate flow with some riffles at various stretches. River levels peak in mid-March and once again in early June. Water levels also vary sub-stantially with rainfall. Rent canoes, kayaks, or tubes for a leisurely float on the Root River. The River is a great way to escape the heat during the sweltering days of summer.

High Ropes CourseOutdoor thrill seekers will like the adrenaline rush atop the tree tops high ropes course and view the expansive Root River Valley from a birds eye view. Reach new heights on an indoor rock climbing wall at the Eagle Bluff Environmental Learning Center.

Shooting Star TrailEnjoy 22 miles of 8-foot wide trail on the Shooting Star Trail that goes from LeRoy to Rose Creek. Much of the trail follows the abandoned railway of the Mil-waukee Road, and also runs through Lake Louise State Park, which has parking, camping, and horse facilities.

Restoration House and Log HouseTake a tour of the Mantorville Restoration House, a well-preserved 1856 building. In its early life it was used as the county office building with offices for sheriff, treasurer, registrar of deeds, etc. The only prison cell in Dodge County is in the basement. The building is loaded with excellent civil war era furnishings. Open daily May to October, except Monday -- 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm. Donations Requested. State Orphanage MuseumMinnesota’s only State Orphanage Museum is located at 540 West Hills Circle in Owatonna. “The Orphanage Story” is told through history photos, plaques, and an exhibit of items from the orphanage time of 1886 through 1945. Mayowood MansionTour historic Mayowood Mansion, created by Dr. Charles H. Mayo, the co-founder of the Mayo Clinic. The 38-room home and ten acres were donated to the Olmsted County Histori-cal Society in 1965. Check out the ornamental gardens as well. Douglas State TrailThe Douglas State Trail is a paved 12.5 mile, multiple use trail developed on an abandoned railroad grade. This trail crosses outstanding rural scenery, traversing some of the richest agricultural land in Minnesota.The trail begins in northwestern Rochester, travels through the small town of Douglas (for which the trail is named) and terminates in Pine Island. It is generally level and wheelchair accessible.

Plummer HouseDr. Henry S. Plummer worked for the Mayo Clinic for 35 years and built this home on the hill. Tours of the beautiful home and landscaped grounds, as well as the quarry, bird trail, and water tower, are available Wednesdays in June, July, and August from 12:00 noon to 6:00 p.m. Rooms can also be rented out for special occasions.

Mayo Historical Trolley TourThe Rochester Trolley and Tour Company offers various guided tours aboard a trolley and/or mini-bus in and around the Rochester area. The tour company also offers guided fishing and hunting trips. The location of this listing is at the entrance of the Rochester Marriott, one of the primary boarding locations for the downtown Mayo Historical Trolley tour that is offered Tuesday thru Saturday. Other boarding locations include the History Center of Olmsted County and Saint Marys Hospital near the 2nd Street SW crosswalk. Broadway Theatre Moonshine Showcase presents live concerts at the Broadway Theatre in Wabasha since 2009, hosting some of the biggest bands and artists in the area and around the country. Other events include Music Under the Bridge every Friday night in the summer months, put on by the River Junction Arts Council at Heritage Park in Wabasha.

Garvin HeightsGarvin Heights in Winona is a scenic overlook where visitors can see from Lake Pepin to Mount Trempealeau. There is an amaz-ing view, and historical information on display that describes the unique area. There is also a hiking trail that takes you to from the scenic overlook to the lake at the bottom of the bluff.

Ed’s MuseumVisit Ed’s Museum, a former Jack Sprat grocery store owned by Ed Krueger, Wykoff’s historian and self appointed collector of Wykoff memorabilia. Wykoff’s School Museum is attached to Ed’s, a great place to reminisce about one’s school years.

Crossings at CarnegieCrossings at Carnegie has art exhibits, music concerts, art and writing classes, and more. There is even a clay studio that is open to members 24 hours a day, seven days a week. There is always something going on from special writing and art collabo-rations to special guest speakers to camps for children.

Minnesota Marine Art Museum Visit the Minnesota Marine Art Museum in Winona for a unique art experience. The mission of the museum is to “engage visitors in meaningful visual art experiences through education and exhibitions that explore the ongoing and historic human relationship with water.” The museum is open Tuesday- Sunday from 10am-5pm.

Winona County History Center The Winona County Historical Society is Minnesota’s largest county historical society. They recently completed a major addition to their main museum, the Winona County History Center. Please explore their website and make a visit! Tews Corn Maze Come get lost with us at Tews Corn Maze in Winona, MN. The maze is located just five miles north of Lewiston on County Road 25. Tews Corn Maze is open weekends from September through October from noon to 6 p.m., and weekdays by appointment only. The admission includes the maze, with a design that can only be seen from above, hayrides, pig races, petting zoo, and duck races.

Historic Pickwick MillThe Pickwick Mill was built from 1856 to 1858 and is one of the oldest water powered gristmills found in southeast Minnesota. The mill was constructed as a gristmill and sawmill on the banks of Big Trout Creek located in Pickwick, Minnesota. Come visit and watch the mill in operation. The Pickwick Mill, located at 24813 County Rd. 7, Winona, will be open weekends during May, September and October, Tuesday through Sunday during June, July, and August.
