Owner’s HandbookThank you for choosing a Triumph motorcycle. This motorcycle is the product of Triumph’suse of proven engineering, exhaustive testing, and continuous striving for superior reliability,safety and performance. Please read this owner’s handbook before riding in order to becomethoroughly familiar with the correct operation of your motorcycle’s controls, its features,capabilities and limitations.

This handbook includes safe riding tips, but does not contain all the techniques and skillsnecessary to ride a motorcycle safely. Triumph strongly recommends that all ridersundertake the necessary training to ensure safe operation of this motorcycle.

A WARNING: This owner’s handbook and all other instructions which aresupplied with your motorcycle should be considered a permanent part of

your motorcycle and should remain with it even if your motorcycle is subsequentlysold.

All riders must read this owner’s handbook and all other instructions which aresupplied with your motorcycle before riding in order to become thoroughly familiarwith the correct operation of your motorcycle’s controls, its features, capabilitiesand limitations. A WARNING: This motorcycleis designed for on-road use

only. It is not suitable for off-roaduse.

Off-road operation could lead to lossof control of the motorcycle resultingin an accident causing injury or lossof life.

A WARNING: Never start yourengine or let it run for any

length of time in a closed area. Theexhaust fumes are poisonous andmay cause loss of consciousness anddeath within a short time. Alwaysoperate your motorcycle in theopen-air or in an area with adequateventilation.

A WARNING: This motorcycleis not designed to tow a trailer

or be fitted with a sidecar. Fitting asidecar and/or a trailer may result inloss of control and an accident.

A WARNING: This motorcycleis designed for use as a

two-wheeled vehicle capable ofcarrying a rider on his own, or a riderand one passenger (subject to apassenger seat being fitted).

The total weight of the rider, and anypassenger, accessories and luggagemust not exceed the maximum loadlimit of 185 kg (407 Ibs).

A WARNING: PETROL ISHIGHLY FLAMMABLE:

Always turn off the engine whenrefuelling.

Do not refuel or open the fuel filler capwhile smoking or in the vicinity of anynaked flame.

Take care not to spill any petrol on theengine, exhaust pipes or silencerswhen refuelling.

If petrol is swallowed, inhaled orallowed to get into the eyes, seekimmediate medical attention.

Spillage on the skin should beimmediately washed off with soapand water and clothing soiled withpetrol should immediately beremoved.

Burns and other serious skinconditions may result from contactwith petrol.

A WARNING: The rider mustmaintain control of the

vehicle by keeping hands on thehandlebars at all times.

The handling and stability of amotorcycle will be adversely affectedif the rider removes his hands fromthe handlebars, resulting in loss ofcontrol or an accident.

A WARNING: Always turn offthe engine and remove the

ignition key before leaving themotorcycle unattended. By removingthe key, the risk of use of themotorcycle by unauthorised oruntrained persons is reduced.

When parking the motorcycle, alwaysremember the following:-

The engine and exhaust system willbe hot after riding. DO NOT parkwhere pedestrians, animals and/orchildren are likely to touch themotorcycle.

Do not park on soft ground or on asteeply inclined surface. Parkingunder these conditions may cause themotorcycle to fall over.

For further details, please refer to the‘How to Ride the Motorcycle’ sectionof this owner’s handbook.

A WARNING: Footrestsprovided must always be

used by rider and passenger duringoperation of the vehicle.

By using the footrests, both rider andpassenger will reduce the risk ofinadvertent contact with anymotorcycle components and will alsoreduce the risk of injury fromentrapment of clothing.

A WARNING: Never ride themotorcycle when fatigued or

under the influence of alcohol orother drugs.

Riding when fatigued or under theinfluence of alcohol or other drugsreduces the rider’s ability to maintaincontrol of motorcycle and may lead toloss of control and an accident.

Riding when under the influence ofalcohol or other drugs is illegal.

A WARNING: GRINDING OFMAGNESIUM ALLOY PARTS

Magnesium alloy grinding fines arehighly flammable.

Always ensure that correctprocedures and equipment are usedto avoid the risk of fire. Suitableprotective flame-resistant clothingmust be worn. Never permit nakedflames, cutting and weldingoperations or smoking in the workingarea.

Magnesium alloy componentsincorporated in this motorcycleinclude, engine covers, cam coverand the headlight support.

A WARNING: Always ridedefensively and wear the

protective equipment mentionedelsewhere in this foreword.Remember, in an accident , amotorcycle does not give the sameimpact protection as a car.

A WARNING: Use of amotorcycle with bank angle

indicators worn beyond the maximumlimit (when 1Omm or more of theradiused tip of either front footrest isworn away) will allow the motorcycleto be banked to an unsafe angle.

Never change the setting of thegearchange rod or brake pedalpushrod as this may adversely affectthe bank angle at which the bankangle indicators contact the ground.

Banking to an unsafe angle maycause instability, loss of control andan accident causing injury or death.

A WARNING: Ensure allequipment which is required

by law is installed and functioningcorrectly.

The removal or alteration of themotorcycles lights, silencers,emission or noise control systemscan violate the law.

Incorrect or improper modificationmay adversely affect the handling,stability or other aspect of themotorcycle operation which mayresult in an accident causing injury ordeath.

A WARNING: If the motorcycleis involved in an accident or

collision it must be taken to anauthorised Triumph dealer forinspection and repair. Any accidentcan cause damage to the motorcyclewhich, if not correctly repaired, maycause a second accident which mayresult in injury or death.

A WARNING: Consult yourauthorised Triumph dealer

whenever there is doubt as to thecorrect or safe operation of thisTriumph motorcycle.

Remember that continued operationof an incorrectly performingmotorcycle may aggravate the faultand may also prejudice safety.

A WARNING: When riding themotorcycle both rider and

passenger must always wear a crashhelmet, eye protection, gloves,trousers (close fitting around theknee and ankle) and a brightlycoloured jacket. Brightly colouredclothing will considerably increase arider’s (or passenger’s) visibility toother operators of road vehicles.Although full protection is notpossible, wearing correct protectiveclothing can reduce the risk of injurywhen riding.

A WARNING: A crash helmet isone of the most important

pieces of riding gear as it offersprotection against head injuries. Youand your passenger’s crash helmetshould be carefully chosen andshould fit you or your passenger’shead comfortably and securely. Abrightly coloured helmet will increasea rider’s (or passenger’s) visibility toother operators of road vehicles.

An open face helmet offers someprotection in an accident though a fullface helmet will offer more.

Always wear a visor or approvedgoggles to help vision and to protectyour eyes.

A WARNING: Owners shouldbe aware that the only

approved parts, accessories andconversions for any Triumphmotorcycle are those which carryofficial Triumph approval and arefitted to the motorcycle by anauthorised dealer.

Triumph does not accept any liabilitywhatsoever for defects caused by thefitting of non-approved parts,accessories or conversions or thefitting of any approved parts,accessories or conversions bynon-approved personnel.

In particular, it is extremelyhazardous to fit or replace parts oraccessories whose fitting requiresthe dismantling of, or addition to,either the electrical or fuel systemsand any such modification couldcause a safety hazard.

The fitting of any non-approvedparts, accessories or conversionsmay adversely affect the handling,stability or other aspect of themotorcycle operation which mayresult in an accident causing injury ordeath.

A WARNING: This Triumphmotorcycle s h o u l d b e

operated within the legal speed limitsfor the particular road travelled.

Operating a motorcycle at highspeeds can be potentially dangeroussince the time available to react togiven traffic situations is greatlyreduced as road speed increases.

Always reduce speed in potentiallyhazardous driving conditions such asbad weather or heavy traffic.

A WARNING: Continuallyobserve and react to changes

in road surface, traffic and windconditions. All two-wheeled vehiclesare subject to external forces whichmay cause an accident. These forcesinclude but are not limited to:

. Wind draft from passing vehicle

. Uneven or holed road surfaces.

l Bad weather.

. Rider error.

Always operate the motorcycle atmoderate speed and away from heavytraffic until you have becomethoroughly familiar with its handlingand operating characteristics. Neverexceed the legal speed limit.

SPEEDOMETERThe speedometer indicates the road speedof the motorcycle.

In the speedometer face are the odometerand trip meter. The odometer shows thetotal distance that the motorcycle hastravelled. The trip meter shows the distancetravelled since the meter was last reset tozero. The trip meter can be reset to zero byrotating the reset knob situated on the lefthand side of the speedometer.

TACHOMETERThe tachometer shows the engine speed inrevolutions per minute - rpm (r/min). On theright side of the tachometer face is the ‘red

zone’. Engine rpm (r/min) in the red zone isabove maximum recommended enginespeed and is also above the range for bestperformance.

COOLANT TEMPERATURE GAUGE

The coolant temperature gauge indicatesthe temperature of the engine coolant. Onthe right -hand side of the gauge face is the‘red zone. If the temperature gauge needlemoves into the ‘red zone’ this indicates thatthe engine is overheating.

switch is turned to left or right, thecorresponding direction indicator lightflashes on and off.

c l~ LOW OIL PRESSURE: The low oil

pressure warning light becomesilluminated whenever the oil pressure isdangerously low (or the ignition switch is inthe ‘ON’ position with the engine notrunning). When the engine is running, thelight will remain off when sufficient oilpressure is present.

When starting the motorcycle, check thatthe light comes on when the ignition is in the‘ON’ position, but goes out as soon as theengine starts

A! CAUTION: Stop the engineimmediately if the low oil

pressure warning light comes onduring normal operation. Do notrestart the engine until the fault hasbeen rectified.

Severe engine damage will resultfrom running the engine when the oilwarning light is illuminated.

HIGH BEAM: When the headlightsare switched on and the headlight

dip switch is set to ‘high beam’, the highbeam warning light will illuminate.

IElINEUTRAL: The neutral warninglight indicates when the

transmission is in neutral (no gear selected).The warning light will illuminate when thetransmission is in neutral with ignition switchin the ‘ON’ position.

mlLOW FUEL: The low fuel indicatorwill illuminate when there are

approximately 3.7 litres of fuel remaining inthe tank.

Et3ENGINE MANAGEMENTSYSTEM MALFUNCTIONINDICATOR LIGHT: The

malfunction indicator light for the enginemanagement system illuminates when theignition is switched on, remains illuminatedduring starting, and goes out shortly after theengine starts.

If the malfunction indicator light becomesilluminated during riding, a fault hasoccurred in the engine managementsystem. In this case the system will switchto ‘limp-home’ mode so that riding maycontinue. Contact an authorised Triumphdealer as soon as possible to have the faultchecked out and rectified.

A WARNING: Do not continueto ride for a long period with

the malfunction indicator lightilluminated. The fault which hasoccurred may affect engineperformance and fuel consumption.Reduced engine performance couldcause a dangerous riding condition,leading to loss of control and anaccident

1. Key Number Tag

IGNITION KEY

In addition to operating the steeringlock/ignition switch, the ignition key isrequired to operate the seat lock and fueltank cap.When the motorcycle is delivered from thefactory, two keys are supplied together witha small tag bearing the key number. Makea note of the key number and store the sparekey and key number tag in a safe place awayfrom the motorcycle.

Your authorised Triumph dealer can supplya replacement key cut from details of the keynumber or can cut a new key using theoriginal as a master.

IGNITION SWITCH/STEERING LOCK

This is a four position, key operated switch.The key can be removed from the switchonly when it is in the OFF, LOCK or P(PARK) position.

TO LOCK: Turn the key to the ‘OFF’position, push and fully release the key, thenrotate it to the ‘LOCK’ position.

‘PARKING’: Turn the key from the ‘LOCKposition to the ‘P’ position. The steeringremains locked.

NOTE:

l Do not leave the steering lock inthe ‘P’ position for long periods asthis will cause the battery todischarge.

A WARNING: For reasons ofsecurity and safety, always

turn the ignition to ‘OFF’ and removethe key when leaving the motorcycleunattended.

Any unauthor ised use of themotorcycle may cause injury to theuser, other road users andpedestrians and may also causedamage to the motorcycle.

A WARNING: With the key in the‘LOCK’ or ‘P’ position the

steering will become locked.

Never turn the key to ‘Lock’ or ‘P’while the motorcycle is moving as thesteering will lock. Locked steeringwill cause loss of control and anaccident.

BRAKE LEVER ADJUSTER

An adjuster is fitted to the front brake lever.The adjuster allows the distance from thehandlebar to the brake lever to be changedone of four positions, to suit the span of theoperator’s hands.

To adjust the lever, push the lever forwardand turn the adjuster wheel to align one ofthe numbered positions with the triangularmark on the lever holder.

The distance from the hand grip to thereleased lever is shortest when set tonumber four and longest when set to numberone.

A WARNING: Do not attempt toadjust the brake lever with the

motorcycle in motion as this may leadto loss of control and an accident.

After adjusting the lever, operate themotorcycle in an area free from trafficto gain familiarity with the new leversetting. Do not loan your motorcycleto anyone as they may change thelever setting from the one you arefamiliar with causing loss of controlor an accident.

Engine Stop Switch

In addition to the ignition switchbeing turned to the ‘ON’ position, the enginestop switch must be in the 0 position for themotorcycle to operate.

The engine stop switch is for emergencyuse. If an emergency arises which requiresthe engine to be stopped, move the enginestop switch to the @ position.

NOTE:

l Although the engine stop switchstops the engine, it does not turnoff all the electrical circuits.Ordinarily, the ignition switchshould be used to stop the engine.

The starter button operates theelectric starter. For the starter to operate,the transmission must be in neutral and theclutch lever pulled to the handlebar.

NOTE:

l Even if the clutch lever is pulled in,the starter will not operate if theside stand is down and a gear isengaged.

FUEL REQUIREMENT

Your Triumph engine is designed to useunleaded petrol and will give optimumperformance if this fuel is used.

Alwavs use unleaded fuel with an octanerating of 95 RON or higher.

Never fill the tank until the fuel levelrises into the filler neck. If the tank isfilled until the fuel rises into the fillerneck, heat from sunlight or othersources may cause the fuel to expandand overflow creating a fire hazard.

After refuelling, make sure the tankcap is closed securely.

To close and lock the cap, push the capdown into place, with the key inserted, untilthe lock ‘clicks’ into place. Withdraw the key.

1. Side Stand

STAND

The motorcycle is equipped with a sidestand on which the motorcycle can beparked.

NOTE:

l When using the side stand, alwaysturn the handlebar to the left.

l Whenever the side stand is used,make it a practice to ensure thatthe stand is fully up after firstsitting on the motorcycle.

TOOL KIT

The tool kit is strapped into a recess beneaththe rear seat/rear cover.

To gain access to the handbook, remove theseat.

1. Seat Lock

SEAT LOCK OPERATION/SEAT REMOVAL

The seat lock is situated on the left hand sideof the battery box, in line with the footrestmounting rail, on the left hand side of themotorcycle.

The seat is removed in two sections. Therear seat (or rear cover, where fitted) isretained by the seat lock. The front seat isheld in place by two threaded fixings.

To remove the rear seat/rear cover, insertthe ignition key into the seat lock and turn thekey anti-clockwise while pressing down onthe rear part of the rear seat/rear cover.

To detach the seat/rear cover, lift the rear ofthe seat cover and slide it away from thefront seat.

To refit the seat cover, engage the frontsection of the rear seat/rear cover under theseat bracket and press down on the rear toengage in the seat lock.

NOTE:

l An audible ‘click’ can be heardwhen the seat/seat cover iscorrectly engaged in the lock.

The first 1000 miles (1600km) that the motorcycle isridden is designated the ‘running-in’ period.

l The table below shows maximum recommended engine speeds during ‘running-in’.

Do not ride away or race the engine immediately after starting. Run the engine at idlefor a short period of time to allow the oil to circulate to all parts of the engine.

Do not race the engine while the transmission is in neutral.

Do not use full throttle.

Avoid riding continuously at one speed, vary the speed of the motorcycle from time totime.

Regularly check that the coolant temperature gauge does not indicate that the engineis overheating. Stop immediately if overheating is indicated and allow the engine tocool.

Do not allow the engine to ‘labour’ in any gear.

A! CAUTION: Do not operate thestarter continuously for more

than 5 seconds as the starter motorwill overheat and battery power willdrop. Wait 15 seconds between eachoperation of the starter to allow forcooling and recovery of batterypower.

Do not let the engine idle for longperiods as this may lead tooverheating which will cause damageto the engine.

NOTE:

l If the engine is flooded, crank theengine over, with the throttle fullyopen.

l The motorcycle is equipped withstarter lockout switches. Theswitches prevent the electricstarter from operating when theclutch is engaged and thetransmission is not in neutral.

A! CAUTION: The low oilpressure warning light

should go out as soon as the enginestarts.

If the low oil pressure warning lightstays on after starting the engine,stop the engine immediately andinvestigate the cause.Running the engine with low oilpressure will cause severe enginedamage.

MOVING OFFl Pull in the clutch lever and select first

gear. Open the throttle slightly and letout the clutch lever slowly. As theclutch starts to engage, open thethrottle a little more, allowing enoughengine speed to avoid stalling.

1. Gear Change Pedal

CHANGING GEARS

l Close the throttle while pulling in theclutch lever. Change into the nexthigher or lower gear. Open thethrottle part way, while releasing theclutch lever. Always use the clutchwhen changing gear.

NOTE:. The gear change mechanism is the

‘positive stop’ type. This meansthat, for each movement of thegear change pedal, you can onlyselect each gear, one after theother, in ascending or descendingorder.

A WARNING: Do not change toa lower gear at speeds which

will cause excessive engine rpm(r/min). This can lock the rear wheelcausing loss of control and anaccident. Engine damage may also becaused. Changing down should bedone below 5000 rpm (r/min) for eachgear.

1. Front Brake Lever

BRAKING

A WARNING: WHEN BRAKING,OBSERVE THE FOLLOWING:

Close the throttle completely, leavingthe clutch engaged to allow theengine to help slow down themotorcycle.

Change down one gear at a time suchthat the transmission is in first gearwhen the motorcycle comes to acomplete stop.

When stopping, always apply bothbrakes at the same time. Normally thefront brake should be applied a littlemore than the rear.

Change down or fully disengage theclutch as necessary to keep theengine from stalling.

Never lock the brakes, as this maycause loss of control of themotorcycle and an accident.

1. Rear Brake Pedal

A WARNING: For emergencybraking, disregard down

changing, and concentrate onapplying the front and rear brakes ashard as possible without skidding.Riders should practice emergencybraking in a traffic-free area.

Triumph strongly recommend that allriders take a course of instructionwhich includes advice on safe brakeoperation. Incorrect brake techniquecould result in loss of control and anaccident.

A WARNING: For your safety,always exercise extreme

caution when braking, accelerating orturning as any incautious action cancause loss of control and an accident.Independent use of the front or rearbrakes reduces overall brakingperformance. Extreme braking maycause either wheel to lock, reducingcontrol of the motorcycle and causingan accident.

When possible, reduce speed orbrake before entering a turn asclosing the throttle or braking inmid-turn may cause wheel slipleading to loss of control and anaccident.

When riding in wet or rainyconditions, or on loose surfaces, theability to manoeuvre and stop will bereduced. All of your actions shouldbe smooth under these conditions.Sudden acceleration, braking orturning may cause loss of control andan accident.

A WARNING: Whendescending a long, steep

gradient use engine braking bydown-changing and use the brakesintermittently. Continuous brakeapplication can overheat the brakesand reduce their effectiveness.

Riding with your foot on the brakepedal or your hands on the brake levermay actuate the brake light, giving afalse indication to other drivers. Itmay also overheat the brake,reducing braking effectiveness.

Do not coast with the engine switchedoff, and do not tow the motorcycle.The t ransmission is pressure-lubricated only when the engine isrunning. Inadequate lubrication maycause damage or seizure of thetransmission which can lead tosudden loss of motorcycle controland an accident.

PARKING

Select neutral and turn the ignition switch tothe ‘OFF’ position.

Always park on a firm, level surface toprevent the motorcycle from falling.

When parking on a hill, always park facinguphill to prevent the motorcycle from rollingoff the stand.

On a lateral (sideways) incline, always parkwith the motorcycle leaning towards thesidestand and engage first gear to preventthe motorcycle from moving.

Do not park on a lateral (sideways) incline ofgreater than 6” and never park facingdownhill.

Lock the steering to help prevent theft.

NOTE:

l When parking near traffic at night,leave the tail, licence plate and sidelights on by turning the ignitionswitch to P (Park).

. Do not leave the switch in the ‘P’position for long periods as thiswill discharge the battery.

A WARNING: Do not park on asoft or on a steeply inclined

surface as parking under theseconditions may cause the motorcycleto fall over. Ensure that the stand isfully retracted before riding off.

Petrol is extremely flammable and canbe explosive under certainconditions. If parking inside a garageor other structure, be sure it is wellventilated and the motorcycle is notclose to any source of flame orsparks. This includes any appliancewith a pilot light.

The engine and exhaust system willbe hot after riding. DO NOT parkwhere pedestrians and children arelikely to touch the motorcycle astouching any of the hot parts maycause unprotected skin to becomeburnt.

Check that the front and rear brakes arefunctioning properly.

Steering

Check that the handlebar turns smoothlywithout excessive free play or tight spots,Ensure that the control cables do not restrictthe steering in any way.

Tyres

High speed operation is hard on tyres, andgood tyres are crucial for riding safely.Examine their overall condition, inflate to thecorrect pressure (when the tyres are cold),and check the wheel balance. Securely fitthe valve caps after checking tyrepressures. Observe the information given inmaintenance and specification sections ontyre checking and tyre safety.

Fuel

Have sufficient fuel for the higherconsumption experienced during highspeed operation.

Engine Oil

Make certain that the oil level is visiblemid-way up the sight glass. Ensure that thecorrect grade and type of oil is used whentopping-up.

Coolant

Check that the coolant level is at the upperlevel line in the expansion tank. (Alwayscheck level with engine cold).

Electrical Equipment

Make certain that the headlight, rear/brakelight, turn signals, horn etc., all workproperly.

MiscellaneousMake certain that all fixings are tight and thatall safety related parts are in good condition.

Accessories, Loading and Passengers

The addition of accessories and carriage ofadditional weight can affect the motorcycle’shandling characteristics causing changes instability and necessitating a reduction inspeed. The following information has beenprepared as a guide to the potential hazardsof adding accessories to a motorcycle andcarrying passengers and additional loads,

A WARNING: Incorrect loadingmay result in an unsafe riding

condition leading to an accident.

Always ensure any loads carried areevenly distributed on both sides ofthe motorcycle. Ensure that the loadis correctly secured such that it willnot move around while themotorcycle is in motion.

Always check the load securityregularly (though not while themotorcycle is in motion) and ensurethat the load does not extend beyondthe rear of the motorcycle.

Never exceed the maximum vehicleloading weight of 185 Kg (407 Ibs).

This maximum weight is made upfrom the combined weight of the rider,passenger and any load carried.

A WARNING: Do not installaccessories or carry luggage

that impairs the control of themotorcycle. Make sure that you havenot adversely affected any lightingcomponent, road clearance, bankingcapability (i.e. lean angle), controloperation, wheel travel, front forkmovement, or any other aspect of themotorcycle’s operation.

A WARNING: Never ride anaccessory equipped

motorcycle at speeds above 130km/h(80mph).

The presence of accessories willcause changes in the stability andhandling of the motorcycle.

Failure to allow for changes inmotorcycle stability may lead to lossof control or an accident.

Remember that the 130km/h (8Omph)limit will be reduced by the fittingof non-approved accessories,incorrect loading, worn tyres, overallmotorcycle condition and poor roador weather conditions.

Accessories, Loading and Passengers

A WARNING: Single seatmodels must never carry a

passenger unless a passenger seat isfitted. Carrying a passenger withoutfirst fitting a passenger seat willcontravene the law and may alsocause loss of motorcycle controlleading to an accident.

A WARNING: Your passengershould be thoroughly familiar

with motorcycle operation.

The passenger can cause loss ofcontrol of the motorcycle by incorrectpositioning during cornering andsudden movements.

It is important that the passenger sitsstill while the motorcycle is in motionand does not interfere with theoperation of the motorcycle.

If a passenger is carried, the ridershould instruct the passenger to keephis or her feet on the passengerfootrests and to firmly hold onto theseat strap or the rider’s waist or hips.

The passenger should also beadvised to lean with the rider whentravelling in corners and not to leanunless the rider does so.

Do not carry animals on yourmotorcycle.

A WARNING: Do not carry apassenger unless he or she is

tall enough to reach the footrestsprovided.

A passenger who is not tall enough toreach the footrests will be unable tosit securely on the motorcycle andmay cause instability leading to lossof control and an accident.

A WARNING: Never attempt tostore any items between the

frame and the fairing. This canrestrict the steering and will causeloss of control leading to an accident,

A WARNING: All maintenanceis vitally important and must

not be neglected. Incorrectmaintenance or adjustment maycause one or more parts of themotorcycle to malfunction. Amalfunctioning motorcycle isdangerous and may lead to anaccident.

Weather, terrain and geographicallocation affects maintenance. Themaintenance schedule should beadjusted to match the particularenvironment in which the vehicle isused and the demands of theindividual owner.

Triumph Motorcycles cannot acceptany responsibility for damage orinjury resulting from incorrectmaintenance or improper adjustmentcarried out by the owner.

Since incorrect or neglectedmaintenance can lead to a dangerousriding condition, always have anauthorised Triumph dealer carry outthe scheduled maintenance of thismotorcycle.

SIDE PANEL

Side Panel Removal

l Remove the seat(s).

l Disconnect the battery, negative(black) lead first.

. Release the fixings as shown in thediagram above.

l Disconnect the rear light.

l Lift and withdraw the side panelassembly in a rearward direction.

Side Panel Refitting

l Reverse the removal procedure withthe exception of the following.

l Reconnect the battery positive (red)lead first.

l Tighten the panel fixings to 9 Nm.

ENGINE OIL

I

In order for the engine, transmission, andclutch to function correctly, maintain theengine oil at the correct level, and changethe oil and oil filter in accordance withscheduled maintenance requirements.

A WARNING: Motorcycleoperation with insufficient,

deteriorated, or contaminated engineoil will cause accelerated engine wearand may result in engine ortransmission seizure. Seizure of theengine or transmission may lead toloss of control and an accident.

Oil Level Inspection

l Stop engine, then wait for at least10 minutes to allow the oil to settle.

l The oil level is indicated by a sightglass situated at the bottom of theclutch cover on the right hand side ofthe motorcycle. When the oil level iscorrect, the level of oil should bebetween the two lines marked on theclutch cover to the right of the sightglass.

NOTE:

The actual level is indicated whenthe motorcycle is level andupright, not on the side stand.

If the oil level is too low, remove theplug situated in the upper rear side ofthe clutch cover.

Add oil, a little at a time, until the oilbegins to show in the sight glass.Then adjust to the correct level andrefit the plug.

Oil and OilFilter Change

A WARNING: Prolonged orrepeated contact with engine

oil can lead to skin dryness, irritationand dermatitis. In addition, usedengine oil contains potentiallyharmful contamination which cancause cancer. Wear suitable clothingand avoid skin contact.

The engine oil and filter must be replaced inaccordance with scheduled maintenancerequirements.

l Warm up the engine thoroughly, andthen stop the engine.

l Place an oil pan beneath the engine.

l Remove the engine drain plug.

With the motorcycle on level ground,allow the oil to completely drain.

Unscrew and remove the oil filterusing the Triumph service toolT3880310.

Discard the oil filter.

Apply a smear of clean engine oil tothe sealing ring of the new oil filter.

Fit the oil filter and tighten to 12 Nm.

After the oil has completely drainedout, fit a new sealing washer to theengine drain plug. Fit and tighten theplug to 25 Nm.

Fill the engine with new oil of the typeand grade listed in the specificationsection.

Start the engine and allow to idle.

l Ensure that the oil pressure warninglight extinguishes shortly afterstarting.

A!CAUTION: If the engine oilpressure is too low, the low oil

pressure warning light will illuminate.If this light stays on when the engineis running, stop the engineimmediately and investigate thecause. Running the engine with lowoil pressure will cause enginedamage.

l Stop the engine and check the oillevel. Adjust if necessary.

Disposal of Used Engine Oil

To protect the environment, do not pour oilon the ground, down sewers or drains, orinto water courses. Dispose of used oilsensibly. If in doubt contact your localauthority.

A! CAUTION: Triumph highperformance fuel injected

engines are designed to use semi orfully synthetic 10W/40 motorcycleengine oil which meets specificationAPI SH.

Do not add any chemical additives tothe engine oil. The engine oil alsolubricates the clutch and anyadditives could cause the clutch toslip.

Do not use mineral, vegetable,non-detergent oil, castor based oilsor any oil not conforming to therequired specification. The use ofthese oils may cause instant, severeengine damage.

Ensure no foreign matter enters thecrankcase during an oil change ortop-up.

COOLINGSYSTEM

To ensure efficientengine cooling,check the coolant level each day beforeriding the motorcycle, and top up the coolantif the level is low.

Corrosion Inhibitors

To protect the cooling system from rust andcorrosion, the use of corrosion inhibitorchemicals in the coolant is essential.

If coolant containing corrosion and rustinhibitor chemicals is not used, the coolingsystem will accumulate rust and scale in thewater jacket and radiator. This will block thecoolant passages, and considerably reducethe efficiency of the cooling system.

A WARNING: Use coolantmixture containing corrosion

inhibitors and anti-freeze suitable foraluminium engines and radiators.Always use the anti-freeze inaccordance with the instructions ofthe manufacturer.

Coolant mixture which contains anti-freeze and corrosion inhibitorscontains toxic chemicals which areharmful to the human body. Neverswallow anti-freeze or any of themotorcycle coolant.

Coolant Change

Have the coolant changed by an authorisedTriumph dealer in accordance withscheduled maintenance requirements.

Radiator Hoses

Check the radiator hoses for cracks ordeterioration, and hose clips for tightness inaccordance with scheduled maintenancerequirements. Have your authorisedTriumph dealer replace any defective items.

CAUTION: A permanent typeof antifreeze is installed in the

cooling system when the motorcycleleaves the factory. It is coloured blue,contains a 50% solution of ethyleneglycol, and has a freezing point of-35°C (-31 *F

Check the radiator fins for obstructions byinsects, leaves or mud. Clean off anyobstructions with a stream of low-pressurewater.

A CAUTION:!

Using highpressure water, such as from

a car wash facility, can damage theradiator fins and impair the radiator’sefficiency.

Do not obstruct or deflect airflowthrough the radiator by installingunauthorised accessories, either infront of the radiator or behind thecooling fan. Interference with theradiator airflow can causeoverheating, resulting in enginedamage.

l In an emergency, water alone canbe added to the cooling system.However, the coolant must bereturned to the correct mixtureratio as soon as possible.

A WARNING: Do not removethe radiator cap when the

engine is hot. When the engine is hot,the coolant inside the radiator is hotand also under pressure. Contactwith this hot, pressurised coolant willcause scalds and skin damage.

l Position the motorcycle on levelground and in an upright position.

l Remove the seat.

l Check the coolant level in theexpansion tank. The coolant levelmust be between the ‘MAX’ and ‘MIN’marks.

l If the level of coolant is too low,remove the cap from the expansiontank, and add coolant mixturethrough the filler opening to the ‘MAX’mark. Refit the cap.

A! CAUTION: Distilled watermust be used with the

antifreeze (see specification forantifreeze) in the cooling system.

If hard water is used in the system, itcauses scale accumulation in thewater passages, and considerablyreduces the efficiency of the coolingsystem.

If coolant must be added often, or theexpansion tank runs dry, there isprobably a leak in the system. Havethe cooling system inspected by yourauthorised Triumph dealer.

THROTTLE GRIP

The throttle grip controls the throttle valvesin the throttle bodies.

If the throttle cable is incorrectly adjusted,either too tight or too loose, the throttle maybe difficult to control and performance will beadversely affected.

Check the throttle grip free-play inaccordance with scheduled maintenancerequirements and make adjustments asnecessary.

Inspection

l Check that there is 2-3 mm throttlegrip free-play when lightly turning thethrottle grip back and forth.

l If there is an incorrect amount offree-play, adjustments must bemade.

Adjustment

NOTE:

Set the cable adjuster at the twist gripend such that it has an equal amountof adjustment in each direction.

l Set the adjuster at the throttle bodyend of the cable to give 2-3 mm ofplay at the twist grip. Tighten thelocknut.

l Make any minor adjustments asnecessary to give 2-3 mm of playusing the adjuster at the twist grip endof the cable. Tighten the locknut.

A WARNING: Ensure that boththe adjuster locknuts are

tightened. A loose throttle cableadjuster could cause the throttle tostick leading to loss of control and anaccident.

l Reconnect the battery, positive (red)lead first.

l Refit the seat.

CLUTCH

The motorcycle is equipped with a cableoperated clutch.

If the clutch lever has excessive free-play,the clutch may not disengage fully andcause difficulty in changing gear and clutchdrag. Conversely, if the clutch lever hasinsufficient free-play the clutch may notengage fully, causing clutch slip.

Clutch lever free-play must be checked inaccordance with scheduled maintenancerequirements.

Inspection

l Check that there is 0.4-0.8 mmclutch lever free-play as shown in thediagram above.

l If there is an incorrect amount 01free-play, adjustments must bemade.

Adjustment

Loosen the knurled locknut at thelever end of the clutch cable and turnthe adjuster sleeve until the correctamount of clutch lever free-play isachieved.

Tighten the knurled locknut againstthe clutch lever assembly.

If correct adjustment cannot be madeusing the lever adjuster, use the cableadjuster at the lower end of the cable.

Loosen the adjuster locknut.

Turn the outer cable adjuster to give0.4-0.8 mm of free-play at the clutchlever.

Tighten the locknut.

For safety and to prevent excessive wear,the drive chain must be checked, adjusted,and lubricated in accordance withscheduled maintenance requirements.Checking, adjustment and lubrication mustbe carried out more frequently for extremeconditions such as salty or heavily grittedroads.

If the chain is badly worn or incorrectlyadjusted (either too loose or too tight) thechain could jump off the sprockets or break.

Never neglect chain maintenance.

NOTE:l Checking, adjustment and

lubrication of the drive chain mustbe carried out with the motorcycleset up on a paddock stand so thatthe rear suspension hangs free.

Chain Free-movement Inspection

A WARNING: To prevent risk ofinjury from the motorcycle

falling during the inspection, ensurethat the motorcycle is stabilized andsecured on the stand.

l Rotate the rear wheel to find theposition where the chain is tightest,and measure the vertical movementof the chain midway between thesprockets.

l The vertical movement of the drivechain must be 35-40 mm.

1. Maximum Movement Position( 3 5 - 4 0 mm)

Chain Free-movement Adjustment

If the chain free-movementmeasurement is incorrect,adjustments must be made asfollows:

Loosen the clamp bolt which securesthe rear hub/eccentric adjuster to theswinging arm.

Using the ‘C’ spanner supplied in themotorcycle tool kit, turn the rearhub/eccentric adjuster (clockwise toloosen, anti-clockwise to tighten)until the drive chain is correctlyadjusted (35-40 mm of verticalmovement).

Tighten the rear hub/eccentricadjuster clamp bolt to 55 Nm.

Rotate the rear wheel and repeat thechain adjustment check. Re-adjustif outside the 35-40 mm limit.

. If the length exceeds the maximumservice limit of 319 mm, the chainmust be replaced.

A WARNING: A chain thatbreaks or jumps off the

sprockets could snag on the enginesprocket or lock the rear wheel,severely damaging the motorcycleand causing loss of control and anaccident.

l Rotate the rear wheel and inspect thedrive chain for damaged rollers, andloose pins and links.

l Also inspect the sprockets forunevenly or excessively worn ordamaged teeth.

. If there is any irregularity, have thedrive chain and/or the sprocketsreplaced by an authorised Triumphdealer.

. Replace the chain guard.

ChainLubrication

Lubrication ,necessary every 500 miles and also afterriding in wet weather, on wet roads, or anytime that the chain appears dry.

Use the special chain lubricant asrecommended in the specification section.

l Apply lubricant to the sides of therollers. This will allow the oil topenetrate to the chain rollers andbushings. Also apply oil to the chain‘0’ rings. Wipe off any excess oil.

l If the chain is especially dirty, cleanfirst using paraffin and then apply oilas mentioned above.

A!CAUTION: Do not use apower ‘jet’ wash to clean the

chain as this may cause damage tothe chain components.

BRAKES

Brake Wear Inspection

Brake pads must be inspected inaccordance with scheduled requirementsand replaced if worn to, or beyond theminimum service thickness.

If the lining thickness of any pad (front or rearbrakes) is less than 1.5 mm (0.06 in), that is,if the pad has worn down to the bottom of thegrooves, replace all the pads on the wheel.

A WARNING: Brake pads mustalways be replaced as a wheel

set. At the front, where two calipersare fitted on the same wheel, replaceall the brake pads in both calipers.

Replacing individual pads will reducebraking efficiency and may cause anaccident.

Disc Brake Fluid

Inspect the level of brake fluid in bothreservoirs and change the brake fluid inaccordance with scheduled maintenancerequirements. Use only DOT 4 fluid asrecommended in the specification section.The brake fluid must also be changed if itbecomes, or is suspected of having becomecontaminated with moisture or any othercontaminants.

A WARNING: Brake fluid ishygroscopic which means it

will absorb moisture from the air.

Any absorbed moisture will greatlyreduce the boiling point of the brakefluid causing a reduction in brakingefficiency.

Because of this, always replace brakefluid in accordance with scheduledmaintenance requirements.

Always use new brake fluid from asealed container and never use fluidfrom an unsealed container or fromone which has been previouslyopened.

Do not mix different brands or gradesof brake fluid.

Check for fluid leakage around brakefittings, seals and joints and alsocheck the brake hoses for splits,deterioration and damage.

Always rectify any faults beforeriding.

Failure to observe and act upon any ofthese items may cause a dangerousriding condition leading to loss ofcontrol and an accident.

Brake Fluid Level Inspection andAdjustment

l The brake fluid level in the reservoirsmust be kept between the upper andlower level lines (reservoir heldhorizontal).

l At the rear, remove the side panelassembly.

l Remove the safety clip (front only).. Fill the reservoir to the upper level line

using new DOT 4 fluid from a sealedcontainer.

. Refit the reservoir cap ensuring thatthe diaphragm seal is correctly fitted.

l Refit the safety clip.l At the rear, refit the side panels.

A WARNING: If there has beenan appreciable drop in the

level of the fluid in any fluid reservoir,consult your authorised Triumphdealer for advice before riding.

Riding with defective brakes may leadto an accident.

1. Upper Level, Rear Brake2. Lower Level, Rear Brake

Brake Pad Wear CompensationDisc and disc pad wear is automaticallycompensated for and has no effect on thebrake lever or pedal action. There are noparts that require adjustment on the frontand rear brakes.

A WARNING: If the brake leveror pedal feels soft when it is

applied, or if the lever/pedal travelbecomes excessive, there may be airin the brake lines or the brake may bedefective.

It is dangerous to operate themotorcycle under such conditionsand remedial action must be taken byyour authorised Triumph dealerbefore riding.

Riding with defective brakes may leadto an accident.

Brake Light SwitchesThe brake light is activated independentlyby either the front or rear brake. If the brakelight does not work when the front brakelever is pulled, or the rear brake pedaldepressed, ask your authorised Triumphdealer to investigate and rectify the fault.

A WARNING: Riding themotorcycle with defective

brake lights is illegal and dangerous.

An accident causing injury to the riderand other road users may result fromuse of a motorcycle with defectivebrake lights.

STEERING/WHEEL BEARINGSSteering Inspection

Lubricate and inspect the condition of theheadstock (s teer ing) bear ings inaccordance with scheduled maintenancerequirements.

NOTE. Always inspect the wheel bearings

at the same time as the steeringbearings.

A WARNING: To prevent risk ofinjury from the motorcycle

falling during the inspection, ensurethat the motorcycle is stabilized andsecured on the support block.

Do not exert extreme force againsteach wheel or rock each wheelvigorously as this may cause themotorcycle to become unstable orcause injury by falling from itssupport.

Ensure that the position of thesupport block will not cause damageto the oil lines beneath the sump.

Inspecting the Steering for Free-Play

Inspection

Position the motorcycle on levelground, in an upright position.

Remove the belly panel (wherefitted).

Raise the front wheel off the groundand place a block beneath the engineto support the motorcycle.

Hold the lower end of the front forksand try to move them forward andbackward.

If any free-play can be detected, askyour authorised Triumph dealer toinspect and rectify any faults beforeriding.

Wheel Bearings inspection

If the wheel bearings in the front or rearwheel allow play in the wheel hub, are noisy,or if the wheel does not turn smoothly, haveyour authorised Triumph dealer inspect thewheel bearings.

The wheel bearings must be inspected atthe intervals specified in the scheduledmaintenance chart.

l Gently rock the top of the front wheelfrom side to side.

l If any free-play can be detected, askyour authorised Triumph dealer toinspect and rectify any faults beforeriding.

l Reposition the lifting device andrepeat for the rear wheel.

A WARNING: Operation withworn or damaged wheel

bearings may cause impairedhandling and instability leading to anaccident. If in doubt, have themotorcycle inspected by anauthorised Triumph dealer beforeriding.

. Remove the support and place themotorcycle on the side stand.

l Refit the belly panel (where fitted).

FRONT SUSPENSION

All models are fitted with forks which areadjustable for spring pre load, compressiondamping and rebound damping.

Front Fork Inspection

l Examine each fork stanchion for anysign of damage, scratching of theslider surface, or for oil leaks.

l If any damage or leakage is foundconsult an authorised Triumphdealer.

To check that the forks operate smoothly:

l Position the motorcycle on levelground.

l While holding the handlebars andapplying the front brake, pump theforks up and down several times.

NOTE:

l The suspension movement will beaffected by adjustment settings.

l If roughness or excessivestiffness is detected, consult yourauthorised Triumph dealer.

The standard suspension settings provide acomfortable ride and good handlingcharacteristics for general, solo riding. Thechart shows suggested settings for front andrear suspension.

A WARNING: Ensure that thecorrect balance between front

and rear suspension is maintained.Suspension imbalance couldsignificantly change handlingcharacteristics leading to loss ofcontrol and an accident. Refer to thechart above for further information orconsult your Triumph dealer.

Spring Pm-load Adjustment

To change the spring pre-load, rotate theadjuster clockwise (screw-in) to increasepre-load, or anti-clockwise (screw-out) todecrease pre-load. Always set thepre-load adjusters such that there are anequal number of graduation lines visible onboth forks.

NOTE:

l The motorcycle is delivered fromthe factory with the springpre-load set on position 5.

Compression Damping Adjustment

To change the compression damping forcerotate the slotted adjuster clockwise(screw-in) to increase, or anti-clockwise(screw-out) to decrease.

Maximum damping force is obtained whenthe adjuster is rotated fully clockwise(screwed fully in).

Minimum damping force is obtained whenthe adjuster is rotated fully anti-clockwise(screwed fully out). Always count the turnsout from the screwed fully in position and setboth forks to the same setting.

3. Compression Damping ForceAdjuster

NOTE:l The motorcycle is delivered from

the factory with the compressiondamping set at position 1.

Rebound Damping Adjustment

To change the rebound damping force,rotate the slotted adjuster clockwise(screw-in) to increase, or anti-clockwise(screw-out) to decrease. Always count theturns out from the screwed fully in positionand set both forks to the same position.

Maximum damping force is obtained whenthe adjuster is rotated fully clockwise(screwed fully in).

Minimum damping force is obtained whenthe adjuster is rotated fully anti-clockwise(screwed fully out).

The rebound damping adjuster is situated atthe lower left hand end of the rearsuspension unit.

To adjust the rebound damping setting,rotate the adjuster clockwise to increaserebound damping and anti-clockwise todecrease.

This motorcycleis equipped withtubeless tyres, valves and wheel rims. Useonly tyres marked ‘TUBELESS’ andtubeless valves on rims marked ‘SUITABLEFOR TUBELESS TYRES’.

Tyre Inflation Pressures

Correct inflation pressure will providemaximum stability, rider comfort and tyrelife. Always check tyre pressures beforeriding when the tyres are cold. Check tyrepressures daily and adjust if necessary.See the specification section for details ofthe correct inflation pressures.

Wheel Marking

A WARNING: Incorrect tyreinflation will cause abnormal

tread wear and instability problemswhich may lead to loss of control andan accident.

Under-inflation may result in the tyreslipping on, or coming off the rim.Over-inflation will cause instabilityand accelerated tread wear.

Both conditions are dangerous asthey may cause loss of controlleading to an accident.

Tyre Wear

As the tyre tread k!!??@!wears down, thetyre becomes more susceptible topunctures and failure. It is estimated that90% of all tyre failures occur during the last10% of tread life (90% worn). It is, therefore,false economy and unsafe to use tyres untilthey are worn to their minimum.

l In accordance with the periodicmaintenance chart, measure thedepth of the tread with a depth gauge,and replace any tyre that has worn tothe minimum allowable tread depth.

Minimum Recommended Tread Depth

A WARNING: This motorcyclemust not be operated above

the legal road speed limit except inauthorised closed course conditions.

A WARNING: Operation withexcessively worn tyres is

hazardous and will adversely affecttraction, stability and handling whichmay lead to loss of control and anaccident.

When tubeless tyres becomepunctured, leakage is often very slow.Always inspect tyres very closely forpunctures. Check the tyres for cuts,imbedded nails or other sharpobjects. Operation with punctured ordamaged tyres will adversely affectstability and handling which may leadto loss of control or an accident.

Check the rims for dents ordeformation. Operation withdamaged or defective wheels or tyresis dangerous and loss of control or anaccident could result.

It is essential that approvedtyres, fitted in approved combinations, areused when purchasing replacement tyres.The use of non approved tyres, or approvedtyres in non approved combinations, maylead to motorcycle instability and anaccident. A WARNING: Tyres that havebeen used on a rolling road

dynamometer may become damaged.In some cases, the damage may notbe visible on the external surface ofthe tyre.

A WARNING: Accurate wheelbalance is necessary for safe,

Battery Electrolyte Level Inspection

A WARNING: The batteryelectrolyte is corrosive and

poisonous and will cause damage tounprotected skin. Never swallowbattery electrolyte or allow it to comeinto contact with the skin. To preventinjury, always wear eye and skinprotection when adjusting theelectrolyte level.

The battery electrolyte level must be keptbetween the upper and lower level lines.Check the electrolyte level in each cell inaccordance with scheduled requirements.

FUSES

Fuses are arranged in the fuse box locatedunder the front seat.

If a fuse fails during operation, inspect theelectrical system to determine the cause,and then replace it with a new fuse of correctcurrent rating.

A WARNING: Always replaceblown fuses with new ones of

the correct current rating (asspecified on the fuse box cover) andnever use a fuse of higher rating.Although no spare 5 Amp. fuse issupplied in the fuse box, it is stronglyrecommended that a spare 5 Amp.fuse be carried.

Fuse Identification

A blown fuse is indicated when all of thesystems protected by that fuse becomeinoperative. When checking for a blownfuse, use the table below to establish whichfuse has blown.

On the RH headlight turn thehorizontal adjustment screwclockwise to move the beam to theright or anti-clockwise to move thebeam to the left.

On the LH headlight turn thehorizontal adjustment screwanti-clockwise to move the beam tothe right or clockwise to move thebeam to the left.

Switch the headlights off when thebeam settings are satisfactory.

Headlight Bulb ReplacementThe complete headlight unit must beremoved to gain access for bulbreplacement.

Remove the seat(s).

Disconnect the battery, negative(black) lead first.

Remove the cockpit.

Unscrew the nuts securing theheadlight unit to the support bracketand release the unit.

Disconnect the multi-pin electricalconnector from the bulb to bereplaced and remove the rubbercover.

Detach the wire bulb retainer from theclip. It is not necessary to undo thescrew.

Remove the bulb from the headlightunit.

Installation is the reverse of theremoval procedure.

Partially release the central clampfixing on the headlight mountingbracket and pivot both headlightsupward or downward as necessary.

Tighten the central clamp fixing whileholding the headlights in the desiredposition.

Release the clamp fixing to the rear ofthe headlight bowl and pivot theheadlamp to the left or right asnecessary.

Tighten the clamp fixing while holdingthe headlight in the desired position.

Repeat for the other headlight.

Switch the headlights off when thebeam settings are satisfactory.

Each halogen headlight bulb can bereplaced as follows:

Disconnect the battery, negative(black) lead first.

Release the headlight bezel clampscrew.

Support the headlight unit andremove the bezel. Ease the headlightfrom the headlight bowl.

Disconnect the multi-pin electricalconnector from the headlight bulband remove the rubber cover.

Unhook the wire retaining clip frombehind the bulb.

Remove the bulb from the headlightunit.

Installation is the reverse of theremoval procedure.

CLEANING

Frequent, regular cleaning is an essentialpart of the maintenance of your motorcycle.If regularly cleaned, the appearance will bepreserved for many years. Cleaning withwarm water containing an automotivecleaner is essential at all times butparticularly so after exposure to seabreezes, sea water, dusty or muddy roadsand in winter when roads are treated for iceand snow.

Although, under the terms of yourmotorcycle warranty, cover is providedagainst the corrosion of certain items, theowner is expected to observe thisreasonable advice which will safeguardagainst corrosion and enhance theappearance of the motorcycle. Do not usehousehold detergent as the use of suchproducts will lead to premature corrosion.

Preparation for Washing

Before washing, precautions must be takento keep water off the following places.

l Rear opening of the muffler: Coverwith a plastic bag secured with rubberbands.

l Clutch and brake levers, switchhousings on the handlebar: Coverwith plastic bags.

l Ignition switch: Cover the keyholewith tape.

l Air cleaner intakes: Close up theintakes with tape.

Where to be Careful

Avoid spraying water with any great forcenear the following places:

. Instruments.

l Brake cylinders and brake calipers.

l Under the fuel tank.

l Drive chain and headstock bearings.

NOTE:

l Coin operated, h igh pressurespray washers are notrecommended. The water may beforced into bearings and othercomponents causing eventualfailure from rust and corrosion.Some of the soaps which arehighly alkaline leave a residue orcause spotting.

After Washing

Remove the plastic bags and tape,and clear the air intakes.

Lubricate the pivots, bolts and nuts.

Test the brakes before motorcycleoperation.

Start the engine and run it for5 minutes. Ensure adequateventilation for the exhaust fumes.

Use a dry cloth to absorb waterresidue. Do not allow water to standon the machine as this will lead tocorrosion.

A WARNING: Never wax orlubricate the brake discs.

Loss of braking power and anaccident could result. Clean the discwith a proprietary brand of oil freebrake disc cleaner.

Unpainted Aluminium Items

l Items such as brake and clutch leversmust be correctly cleaned topreserve their appearance.

. Use a proprietary brand of aluminiumcleaner which does not containabrasive or caustic elements.

l Clean aluminium items regularly, inparticular after use in inclementweather, where the componentsmust be hand washed and dried eachtime the machine is used.

l Warranty claims due to inadequatemaintenance will not be allowed.

Cleaning of the Exhaust System:All parts of the exhaust system of yourmotorcycle must be cleaned regularly toavoid a deterioration of its appearance.These instructions can be applied to blackchrome, brushed stainless steel and carbonfibre components alike.

NOTE:

l The exhaust system must be coolbefore washing to prevent waterspotting.

Washing

l Prepare a mixture of water and mildsoap. Do not use a high alkalinecontent soap as commonly found atcommercial car washes because itleaves a residue.

l Wash the exhaust system with a softcloth. Do not use an abrasivescouring pad or steel wool. They willdamage the finish.

l Rinse the exhaust systemthoroughly.

l Ensure no soap or water enters themufflers.

Drying

l Dry the exhaust system completelywith a soft cloth. Do not run theengine to dry the system or spottingwill occur.

Protecting

l When the exhaust system is dry, rub‘Motorex 645 Clean And Protect’ intothe surface.

A! CAUTION: The use of siliconeproducts such as WD40 will

cause discolouration of the chromeand must not be used. Similarly, theuse of abrasive cleaners such asSolvol Autosol will damage thesystem and must not be used.

l It is recommended that regularprotection be applied to the system asthis will both protect and enhance thesystem’s appearance.

Storage

Preparation for Storage:

l Clean the entire vehicle thoroughly.

l Empty the fuel from the fuel tank intoa secure container.

A WARNING: Petrol isextremely flammable and can

be explosive under certainconditions. Turn the ignition switchOFF. Do not smoke. Make sure thearea is well ventilated and free fromany source of flame or sparks; thisincludes any appliance with a pilot

Ilight.

l Remove the spark plugs and putseveral drops (5 ml) of engine oil intoeach cylinder. Push the starter buttonfor a few seconds to coat the cylinderwalls with oil, and install the sparkplugs.

l Reduce tyre pressure by about 20%.

l Set the motorcycle on a box or standso that both wheels are raised off theground. (If this cannot be done, putboards under the front and rearwheels to keep dampness away fromthe tyre rubber).

l Spray oil on all unpainted metalsurfaces to prevent rusting. Preventoil from getting on rubber parts, brakediscs or in the brake calipers.

l Lubricate the drive chain and all thecontrol cables.

l Remove the battery, and store itwhere it will not be exposed to directsunlight, moisture, or freezingtemperatures. During storage itshould be given a slow charge (oneampere or less) about once a month.Keep the battery well charged during

cold weather so that the electrolytedoes not freeze and crack the battery.The more discharged the batterybecomes, the more easily it freezes.

l Tie plastic bags over the exhaust pipeto prevent moisture from entering.

l Put a cover over the motorcycle tokeep dust and dirt from collecting onit.

Preparation after Storage:

Check the electrolyte level in thebattery, charge the bat tery i fnecessary, and install it in themotorcycle. Be careful that thebattery vent hose is not pinched andthat it is routed as shown on the label.

Fill the fuel tank with fuel.

Change the engine oil and filter.

Check all the points listed in the DailySafety Checks section.

Before starting the engine, removespark plugs.

Put side stand down. This will isolatethe ignition and prevent stray sparksand damage to the ignition system.

Crank the engine on the starter motorseveral times until the oil pressurelight goes out.

Replace spark plugs and startengine.

Check brakes and operation.
