Check Your Circuit Breaker If you see a tripped circuit breaker, reset it and listen for your system to kick on. Just place your hand over your register and see if you feel cool air coming out of the register. Check to See if Your Filter is Dirty Your filter should be changed every 2 months if it's a 1 inch filter OR every 6 months for a 5 inch filter. You may not be getting the air flow the system needs to cool your house. Try changing your filter first. A dirty filter will reduce the efficiency of your unit. Check Your Thermostat Make sure your thermostat is on cool and set between 70-75 degrees. If your system is still not cooling, you could have a dirty condenser and/or evaporator coil. Cleaning the condenser can be a tricky and dirty job, so unless you have a lot of experience and expertise with HVAC systems, we DO NOT recommend you try it yourself. The evaporator coil also accumulates dirt and is typically located inside the home in a chamber above the furnace and usually is not easily accessible. Most home owners prefer that a trained technician handle this task. If it’s over 100 degrees your system will run 100% of the time. By the way, cleaning condensers and evaporators is among the maintenance services performed by Dayco during spring and/or fall system checks. If you are a maintenance customer, these services will be performed automatically; plus you receive priority service if your system quits working. If you are not a maintenance customer call and sign up and schedule your first maintenance appointment and take advantage of your discounts. Due to the heat crisis and if you sign up for a maintenance, you may be scheduled at the end of August. Low Refrigerant Another reason your air conditioner could operate sluggishly is, it may be low on refrigerant. Replenishing refrigerant is NOT something you want to do yourself. This task requires special equipment. These are the most common issues and the simple casual checks you can do yourself. If you still have problems, don't hesitate to call us. Call (509) 396-5354.
