A Well-known industrialist, philanthropist and a greatvisionary.
Made tremendous contributions to the Indian Industry ingeneral and the Machine Tool Industry in particular.
His company, “Perfect Machine Tools” (PMT) was apioneering company in the machine tool industry in India.
He was the President of the “Indian Machine ToolManufacturing Association” and “Machine Tool MarketingAssociation of India” for number of years.

“Made in India” was a passion for Mr. Shah. It was his life’s mission
and objective to ensure that “Made in India” brand gets recognized
and is respected all over the world.
He worked tirelessly and with unwavering determination for
achieving this mission.
It was obvious to Mr. Shah that for his dream of “Made in India” to
be realized, quality, environmental protection and occupational
health & safety will play a very important role in achieving his
dream.
Therefore, he decided to pay particular attention to these aspects
and work very hard in propagating these concepts, throughout his
life.4

During his lifetime he received several awards and honors, some ofwhich are listed below:
Gold Insignia & Citation (highest award given to a Foreigner) of Govt. ofPoland for promotion of Indo-Polish trade.
Austrian Award, given by the Austrian Govt., for promoting Austrianbusiness in India.
Quimpro Platinum Standards Award for Quality Management.
Shiromani Award, conferred by the Shiromani Institute.
‘Bajaj Auto Outstanding Quality Award’, bestowed by NCQM, which waspresented by Mr. R. Venkataraman, Former President of India.
The ‘Ambassador for Quality in India’ Award, of the American Society forQuality Control. This was presented by the U.S. Consul General.
IMC’s ‘Juran Quality Medal’. This was presented by the Prime Minister ofIndia.

His passion for quality, protection of environment and improved health and safety
for all Indians was so great that he donated all his life’s earnings to the D. L. Shah
Trust that he founded in 1994 in order to ensure that his life’s mission is carried
forward even after he is no more.
D. L. Shah Trust had published a number of books on Quality and had 60,000 copies
of each of these books distributed free-of-charge to organizations, institutions and
quality professionals all over India.
D. L. Shah Trust has instituted National Awards on Quality in association with the
Quality Council of India since 2006 known as the QCI-D.L. Shah National Awards
for Quality. The first set of awards was given in 2006 to the winners by the Hon’ble
President of India Dr. A.P.J Abdul Kalam. The Award ceremony is held in Delhi
every year and these awards are handed over to the winners by one of VVIPs in the
country in the Quality Conclave which is attended by over 700 to 800 Quality
professionals.

QCI-D.L. Shah Quality Awards
The Awards recognize successful improvement projects in the form of case
studies of an organization that have linked quality initiatives to real term
financial gains and competitiveness. These awards are given after thorough
evaluation of the project(s) by a team of highly qualified and experienced quality
assessors and a jury comprising of senior officials of QCI and D.L. Shah Trust.
The online award process begins in mid March and closes around mid June. The
online application submission are based on set guidelines which screened by QCI
for the next stage. The shortlisted documents are put up to the jury comprising of
a team of assessors for selection of projects for site visits. The organization
selected for site visits are assessed by experts for evidences supporting the case
study. The winning entries are awarded with Platinum, Gold & Silver trophies

QCI-D.L Shah Champion Award
Quality Champion Award is an individual level of the Award launched
in 2018 that aims to honour outstanding individuals who have
demonstrated significant contribution in the field of quality (for example
outstanding promotional activities, innovation in approach, promotion,
effective application of quality tools etc.) in any sector.
There are 3 categories of the Award -Platinum, Gold & Silver.
A team of experts from QCI carries out the assessment of the
applications submitted to QCI through online mode. The evaluatin is
done on the basis of a well defined criteria.The final decision pertaining
to the Awards is taken by the Jury, constituted by the NBQP/QCI in
consultation with D.L. Shah Trustees.

The Trust had set up D. L. Shah Quality Research Centre in association
with Quality Council of India in New Delhi. The research centre has been
operational since March 2013. It is perhaps the first research centre in the
country on the subject of quality. The focus of the research is on education
and healthcare.
The Trust also publishes two e-journals every fortnight on the 1st and 15th of
every month i.e. Quality Info and Safety Info.
