ALL ARE WELCOME AT EMANUEL Recognizing that we live in a broken world, Christ calls us to reconciliation and wholeness. As members of Emanuel Lutheran Church and children of a loving and merciful God, we acknowledge that this reconciliation extends to people of any gender identity, gender expression, sexual orientation, age, race, culture, physical or mental ability, economic circumstances, relationship status, or any person that has ever experienced pain or oppression. Because members of different communities may have been excluded from the Church in the past, we wish to make explicit our welcome to all. It is for this purpose that we affirm that ALL people are welcome here, just as they are, con-tributing their individuality to the wholeness of the Body of Christ.

Hymns are taken from the Evangelical Lutheran Worship Service Book & Hymnal (the red book in the pew rack), unless otherwise indicated.

PLEASE SILENCE AND REFRAIN FROM USING phones and other electronic devices during the service.

Please wear your nametags! The congregation is invited to stand for the parts of the service that are marked

with an asterisk “*”. If you are unable to stand you may remain seated.

The altar flowers are given to the glory of God.

DAY OF PENTECOST JUNE 9, 2019

PRELUDE Duo for Flute and Piano : 1 Aaron Copland Katie Cox, flute

During the prelude, the congregation is invited into a time of silent prayer.

WELCOME

*OPENING PRAYER P: Holy God, C: across the ages, the breath of your spirit has been understood as the

creative power which moved over the face of the waters and brought a world to life. Today we celebrate the continuing activity of your spir-it—how the breath of you spirit swept into the lives of a fearful, but faithful group of people and transformed them into powerful and joy-ful witnesses of Jesus Christ as Lord of their lives. As the Holy Spirit blessed and renewed their lives filling them with power and hope, bless and renew our lives, we pray, O God. Fill us anew with the Holy Spirit so that we live from the gift, as energized and joyous witnesses of Jesus Christ as Lord of our lives.

Amen.

*PRAYER OF CONFESSION P: Merciful God, the gift of Jesus’ life in us is visible in the way we witness

to the fruitfulness of that gift. We know that the fruit of the Spirit con-sists of love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gen-tleness and self-control. Yet, so often we put conditions on our love - and joy and peace are difficult to discern when our words and actions deny their presence.

C: Create in me a clean heart, O God, and put a new and right spirit in me.

P: By desiring instant results to pretty well everything, we confess that we forget what it’s like to be patient. We find ourselves neglecting the needs of others because we run out of time to be kind to other than ourselves.

C: Create in me a clean heart, O God, and put a new and right spirit in me.

P: When we persistently make self-centered decisions rather than Christ-centered ones, our understanding of your goodness and faithful-ness is weakened and our discipleship lacks credibility.

C: Create in me a clean heart, O God, and put a new and right spirit in me.

P: In this aggressive world, it’s easy to believe one can’t get anywhere by exercising a spirit of gentleness or even self-control.

C: Create in me a clean heart, O God, and put a new and right spirit in me.

P: Gracious and merciful God, grant us your forgiveness and your love so that we may truly care for one another.

C: Refresh and renew us with the Holy Spirit that we are fruitful and vital disciplines of Jesus Christ. Amen.

*WORDS OF ASSURANCE P: The Holy Spirit frees us. C: Life bringing Holy Spirit, give us light in our darkness; give us strength in our weakness; give us peace in our struggling; give us peace in our struggling; give us love in and through all things. P: Know pardon and the way of new life in Jesus Christ. C: Thanks be to God! Amen.

*OPENING HYMN O Day Full of Grace 627

*GREETING P: The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirt, be with you all. C: And also with you.

*PRAYER OF THE DAY P: God our creator C: the resurrection of your Son offers life to all the peoples of earth. By your Holy Spirit, kindle in us the fire of your love, empowering our lives for service and our tongues for praise, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

ACCLAMATION Halle, Halle

CHILDREN’S MESSAGE

FIRST READING: Genesis 11:1-9 1Now the whole earth had one language and the same words. 2And as they mi-grated from the east, they came upon a plain in the land of Shinar and settled there. 3And they said to one another, “Come, let us make bricks, and burn them thoroughly.” And they had brick for stone, and bitumen for mortar. 4Then they said, “Come, let us build ourselves a city, and a tower with its top in the heavens, and let us make a name for ourselves; otherwise we shall be scattered abroad upon the face of the whole earth.” 5The Lord came down to see the city and the tower, which mortals had built. 6And the Lord said, “Look, they are one people, and they have all one language; and this is only the beginning of what they will do; nothing that they propose to do will now be impossible for them. 7Come, let us go down, and confuse their language there, so that they will not understand one another’s speech.” 8So the Lord scattered them abroad from there over the face of all the earth, and they left off building the city. 9Therefore it was called Babel, because there the Lord confused the language of all the earth; and from there the Lord scattered them abroad over the face of all the earth.

PSALM: Psalm 104:24-34, 35b

24How manifold are your | works, O Lord! In wisdom you have made them all; the earth is full | of your creatures. 25Yonder is the sea, great and wide, with its swarms too man- | y to number, living things both | small and great. 26There go the ships | to and fro, and Leviathan, which you made for the | sport of it. 27All of them | look to you to give them their food | in due season. R 28You give it to them; they | gather it; you open your hand, and they are filled | with good things. 29When you hide your face, | they are terrified; when you take away their breath, they die and return | to their dust. 30You send forth your Spirit, and they | are created; and so you renew the face | of the earth. 31May the glory of the Lord en- | dure forever; O Lord, rejoice in | all your works. R 32You look at the earth | and it trembles; you touch the mountains | and they smoke. 33I will sing to the Lord as long | as I live; I will praise my God while I | have my being. 34May these words of | mine please God. I will rejoice | in the Lord. 35bBless the Lord, | O my soul. Hal- | lelujah! R

SECOND READING: Acts 2:1-21 1When the day of Pentecost had come, [the apostles] were all together in one place. 2And suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. 3Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them, and a tongue rested on each of them. 4All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them ability. 5Now there were devout Jews from every nation under heaven living in Jerusa-lem. 6And at this sound the crowd gathered and was bewildered, because each one heard them speaking in the native language of each. 7Amazed and aston-ished, they asked, “Are not all these who are speaking Galileans? 8And how is it that we hear, each of us, in our own native language? 9Parthians, Medes, Elam-ites, and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, 10Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya belonging to Cyrene, and visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes, 11Cretans and Arabs—in our own languages we hear them speaking about God’s deeds of power.” 12All were amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, “What does this mean?” 13But others sneered and said, “They are filled with new wine.” 14But Peter, standing with the eleven, raised his voice and addressed them, “Men of Judea and all who live in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and listen to what I say. 15Indeed, these are not drunk, as you suppose, for it is only nine o’clock in the morning. 16No, this is what was spoken through the prophet Joel: 17‘In the last days it will be, God declares, that I will pour out my Spirit upon all flesh, and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams. 18Even upon my slaves, both men and women, in those days I will pour out my Spirit; and they shall prophesy. 19And I will show portents in the heaven above and signs on the earth below, blood, and fire, and smoky mist. 20The sun shall be turned to darkness and the moon to blood, before the coming of the Lord’s great and glorious day. 21Then everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.’ ”

*SERMON

*HYMN OF THE DAY O Holy Spirit, Enter In 786

* NICENE CREED AM: Let us confess our faith, in the words of the Nicene Creed. C: We believe in one God,

the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made.

For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary and became truly human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church.

*THE GREAT THANKSGIVING P: The Lord be with you. C: And also with you.

P: Lift up your hearts. C: We lift them to the Lord.

P: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. C: It is right to give our thanks and praise. P: that we should at all times and in all places give thanks and praise to you, almighty and merciful God,

through our Savior Jesus Christ. Fulfilling the promise of the resurrection, you pour out the fire of your Spirit, uniting in one body people of every nation and tongue. And so, with Mary Magdalene and Peter and all the witnesses of the resurrection, with earth and sea and all their creatures, and with angels and archangels, cherubim and seraphim, we praise your name and join their unending hymn:
