WelcomeWelcome to the 2016 Edition of Day-by-Day, Jewish Child’s Day’s annual newsletter.

This is our chance to let you, our supporters, see for yourselves what we have been up to and how we have been spending your money over the past 12 months.

It has been another fantastic year and we have accomplished so much since the last time I wrote to you. We’ve partied at the Park and enjoyed an amazing fundraising dinner at the Park Lane hotel. We’ve initiated the Blue-ish Jewish Friday Night to compliment the ever popular Blue-ish Jewish and organised our inaugural mission to Israel.

We’re very much looking forward to Jewish Child’s Day’s 70th anniversary year and there are very exciting times ahead as we plan to celebrate with you throughout 2017. You can read all about those plans and the wonderful work we have done in the last 12 months inside this newsletter

Of course while it remains essential to us that Jewish Child’s Day continues to put the ‘fun’ into fundraising, we never lose sight of why we are committed to raising over £1m each year for Jewish children in need. Without our support – made possible by your generosity – thousands of Jewish children in Israel, in Eastern Europe and of course here in the UK, would not have anything close to what we believe is an acceptable childhood.

Enjoy reading, and don’t hesitate to get in touch with any feedback.

Wishing you a fabulous summer!

Melanie Klass Executive Director

Project Focus: KFESI-UkraineDue to financial support from Jewish Child’s Day, an outdoor activity area has been set up in the Kharkiv Regional Charitable Foundation for Education and Scientific Initiatives (KFESI) which operates within the Jewish school Shaalavim in Ukraine.

This specialist equipment has been designed as a system of play for children with special needs. The materials will be used to improve mental processing and will enhance the development of fine motor skills, logic, memory, perseverance and concentration. Children will access the play centre

individually and in small groups. Therapists make an individual programme for each child taking into account his or her unique requirements.

The equipment is already having a profound effect on local families. One father said of his son with learning difficulties, “We express our gratitude for the opportunity to attend these special educational classes for children – our child changes, he becomes more sociable, his aggression disappears. He is interested in his school classes and his attention span is vastly improved”.

A psychologist from the centre added, “We try to find an individual approach to each child, in order to bring out the greatest positive effect from using the specialist educational games and equipment”.

“THERE IS ALWAYS ONE CHILD MORE”

“One Child More” was the theme behind the fifth Jewish Child’s Day Dinner held on 16th March 2016 at the Park Lane Hotel, London which raised an incredible £150,000.

The 250 strong audience enjoyed a very special evening of delicious food, great music until they were totally captivated as 20 year old Sasha Zipkin recounted her heart wrenching story of her early childhood, in Be’er Sheva. “I was in such a dark place”, Sasha recounted with tears rolling down her cheeks. “We didn’t have water, there was no electricity so there was nothing in the fridge – everything smelt of alcohol, cigarettes and drugs. My sister Yulia and I stole onions from the market and ate them like apples in order to survive. We could be left 2 or 3 days all alone in a dark corner – nobody cared if we were dead or alive”.

Sasha went on to explain “I am just one child. One of the thousands saved by Jewish Child’s Day. I was a child without a future, now that is all in the past”. She urged the guests to help as much as they could by giving a little bit more. “There are still many more children just like me, living in darkness who desperately need your support – kids like me fighting every day for everything”.

After dinner the stage rocked as Kippalive, an Israeli group of young men who came together as a hobby to put their own spin on Shabbat songs.

Melanie Klass, Jewish Child’s Day’s Executive Director commented “I am truly overwhelmed by the support that we saw at this year’s

dinner – at every level from the numbers in attendance, to the sponsorship and funds raised. The atmosphere in the room was electric. We raised over £150,000, which for a charity of our size is absolutely fantastic. With this level of support we can continue to make a real difference”. Melanie added, “The theme of the dinner was One Child More. This is just so apt because whatever we do, however hard we try there is always one child more that needs our support. We sincerely hope that as the charity enters its 70th year, this will be the year that we can give even more support to the children that really need it. Sasha Zipkin is living proof that given the right nurturing environment every human can succeed. I am so grateful to everyone who supports us, not only at our Annual Dinner, but all year round too. Together we are giving these children a chance to succeed”.

If you haven’t seen our appeal film watch it now at www.jcd.uk.com. Next year’s dinner will be on 27th June 2017. As we will be celebrating our 70th Anniversary it will be a spectacular event – so please put the date in your diary now!

FRIDAY NIGHT SUCCESS FOR BLUE-ISH JEWISH

For the first time since its conception the schools’ Blue-ish Jewish campaign was extended into the Blue-ish Jewish Friday Night, an initiative which encouraged our supporters to host Shabbat Dinner for their friends and family. Instead of bringing the hostess a gift, the guests were asked to make a small donation to Jewish Child’s Day. Nicole Gordon, PR Manager said, “Considering, this was the first year of Blue-ish Jewish Friday Night, we were absolutely thrilled with the amount of people who participated. The initiative was

extremely well received not only by our supporters but also by a number of kosher stores that agreed to give Blue-ish Jewish Friday Night shoppers a special discount. We will definitely be repeating the Friday Night component next year. Watch this space for details of the next Blue-ish Jewish Friday night!”.

The funds raised through Blue-ish Jewish in schools and cheders and the Blue-ish Jewish Friday night will be used to support Step by

Step, a UK based project which will help more disabled children succeed both physically and emotionally through the Jewish Child’s Day Ride with Pride Project.

Will You Remember UsWe are often rendered speechless by the way in which the work of Jewish Child’s Day takes children who are living in the most horrendous circumstances and improves their day-to-day lives beyond recognition. It is nothing short of miraculous. And yet this would not be possible were it not for the generosity of our donors and most significantly our legators. The ability to plan for future legacy income is what enables us to develop ongoing partnerships with organisations across the world. We are focussed not only on the short-term benefits that can be made through early intervention but, more

importantly, the long-term change that will occur through forward planning.

The children Jewish Child’s Day supports come from varying backgrounds with many different and difficult needs. Some have complex and challenging disabilities that require significant intervention to ensure they remain socially integrated. Others have been the victim of horrendous abuse – emotional, physical and sexual – that could ruin their lives forever.

From year to year the legacy income we receive is extremely erratic, but so vital as we rely on this funding to support a

significant proportion of our non-restrictive grants. We simply would not be able to do what we do without this vital source of income. We would really appreciate the opportunity to speak with you in greater detail about Jewish Child’s Day work and specifically regarding how your legacy could play a big part in the lives of thousands of children. To find out more, or to receive our legacy handbook please contact Melanie directly on 020 8446 8804 or by emailing [email protected]

A legacy to Jewish Child’s Day will last for a lifetime.

Winning through Twinning! If your son or daughter’s Bar or Bat Mitzvah is coming up, you’ll know that there is sure to be a whirlwind of activity around the planning of the big day.

At this special time in your child’s life, you might feel that it is important for them to think about Jewish children around the world who might be less fortunate than themselves. At Jewish Child’s Day we have the perfect opportunity to enrich their Bar or Bat Mitzvah experience whilst learning about and thinking of others.

Through our fantastic Bar and Bat Mitzvah twinning programme, your child can choose to twin his or her special day with a child from a very different background. This year as well as the Amit Children’s Home in Israel, we have introduced a new Israeli organisation into our programme: The Netanya Foundation. Through the Netanya Foundation you can choose to twin with a child with special needs at G’vanim school in Netanya or with an ‘at risk’ child who attends the ‘Moadonit programme’ which is a specialised after-school club.

Alfie Showman from Manchester our first Netanya Foundation twin raised over £4,000 in support of Jewish Child’s Day in 2016. Alfie twinned his Barmitzvah with Osher Hajaj, from Kiryat Nordau in

Netanya. Osher is the 4th in a line of 6 children, who have been brought up soley by his mother which makes life extremely challenging for the whole family. Alfie’s parents commented, “We felt that is was so important for Alfie to realise that not all children are as lucky as he. We choose Jewish Child’s Day’s Barmitzvah programme for Alfie to twin through as their core value is children helping children less fortunate than themselves. Alfie really enjoyed the challenge and making a difference to Osher and his family. His target was £500 and he raised over £4,000 which was absolutely fantastic”.

Early June Alfie & his family visited Osher & his family in Israel, where they enjoyed a Bar Mitzvah celebration together. Alfie presented Osher with some gifts that he couldn’t ordinarily have afforded including a tallit, a pair of tefiilin, and a computer.

For several years Jewish Child’s Day has been organising twinnings with Jewish Children in Belarus. The life of a Jewish Child in Belarus is a million miles away from a 12/13 year old child’s life in the UK, with very limited access to Jewish education. Recently Noah Shulman-Miller, twinned his Barmitzvah with Segel Leshenko. Noah raised close to £1,000 for his

twin by taking on 6 challenges in the build-up to his own Barmitzvah! The funds will make a huge difference to the Jewish learning of his Barmitzvah twin.

Whether it be a special needs or disadvantaged child from Israel or a child from a small community in Belarus – the choice of twin will be entirely up to you and your child. But rest assured that whichever route your child chooses, their twinning experience will be something very special – and one that they will cherish forever.

Furthermore with some of our twinning programmes there may be the opportunity for your family to travel to Israel or Belarus and experience first hand the difference that you have made.

Bar/Bat Mitzvah Twinning can start from a minimum donation of £360 and can be met through a one off donation by the family, but many Bar/Bat Mitzvah children like to raise the money themselves through sponsored and other events. It’s a great way to learn about Tzedakah and children feel a real sense of achievement.

If you have any questions, please email [email protected].

Israel Focus: Reuth Project“With the support of the grant from Jewish Child’s Day, four ‘Zebra’ rehabilitation chairs were purchased for the Reuth project in Tel Aviv earlier this year. The photos reflect the different designs and sizes of this very special chair, which has been specifically designed for children with severe disabilities. It enables bed-ridden children to be seated and take part in activities in spite

of their dependency on medical equipment. The tilt actually enables reaching an almost lying position while the wheels enable easy movement. It is attractive whilst at the same time being very practical. We are most appreciative of your ongoing support”.

Miriam Frankel, Deputy Executive Director, Reuth, Tel Aviv

Party@thePark Surpassed All Expectations! The sun shone down on Allianz Park on Sunday 11th October 2015 as nearly 3,000 people arrived to join in Jewish Child’s Day’s Party@thePark.

Children and adults alike were spoilt for choice with the fantastic range of activities that Jewish Child’s Day had laid on. As the more energetic enjoyed the zip-line, roller skating, Highland Games, crazy golf, rodeo bull and last man standing, those seeking a more relaxed time enjoyed hair braiding, face painting, glitter tattoos and the creation station to name but a few! Our fantastic kosher food court was mobbed all day long as families enjoyed their lunch in the sun!

We saw the launch of the new Jewish Child’s Day song “Here to Stay” which was supported by flash mobs from a local dance school. “The launch of “Here to Stay” is an important milestone

for us”, commented Melanie Klass Jewish Child’s Day’s, Executive Director “It is at the heart of what we do which is all about kids helping kids” she added. “To launch the song, at our flagship community event seemed apt!“

At the end of the day, 5 year old Sunny Piler shared his thoughts on the day. “I had the best day of my life – I went on the zip wire 3 times, it was so much fun. The last man standing, laser quest and rodeo bull were also great. I brought so many lovely things home from the tombola and arts and crafts and I had my face painted as spider man. I really can’t wait to go back to Party@thePark”.

Melanie summed up the event as being an outstanding success. “Party@thePark surpassed our expectations both in terms of numbers of people attending and financial support – we raised over £20,000. We were absolutely delighted. Huge thanks to our sponsors the JC and Melvin Jacobs and to every single person who attended as a guest. We are so appreciative of our 90 volunteers who helped out at our fantastic event. Watch this space for details of the next Party@thePark! If you haven’t yet heard the Jewish Child’s Day song Here to Stay you can listen to it at www.jcd.uk.com.

70th Anniversary Planning Well Underway!

Jewish Child’s Day has been raising much needed funds for Jewish children worldwide since 1947, which makes 2017 a really exciting year for both us and you – our supporters who have made this possible over the last 70 years.

In those seven decades Jewish Child’s Day’s work has increased from a once-a-year collection to a year-round activity which has provided millions of pounds in funding for abused, neglected, disabled and underprivileged children. Through the decades the need has changed and increased dramatically but the simple philosophy has remained the same: that no child should live in poverty, need or suffering – anywhere.

We have put together a fantastic line-up of events to enable us to celebrate these 70 successful years in style. From flower arranging and cooking demonstrations to cinema evenings and of course our annual dinner there will be something to ensure everybody can enjoy celebrating 70 years of Jewish Child’s Day. We’ll also be putting together 70 ‘Jewish Child’s Day’ stories – one for each of our year’s work.

If any of these sound appealing and you’d like to join one of our 70th Anniversary fundraising committees, please email [email protected]

To keep up to date with what is happening in 2017 to celebrate 70 years please visit www.jcd.uk.com/70.

We’d love to collate 70 Jewish Child’s Day stories to help us celebrate 70 years. If you have a fundraising story from your childhood you would like to share with us, maybe you were the recipient of support from Jewish Child’s Day or perhaps have some good old fashioned memorabilia we would love to hear from you! Please Join Us For Our Inaugural Israel Mission13-17th November 2016

This November, for the first time in Jewish Child’s Day’s history we will be taking a group of our supporters to Israel. We have put together an action packed 3-day itinerary which will take you to a variety of the projects we support across the country, intermingled with some authentic Israeli cultural experiences.

The 3 day mission will allow you to see at first-hand the difference you have made to so many children’s lives, giving them a brighter future that once seemed impossible. We will be visiting a selection of six of the projects we support across the

country. In addition, Dalia Rabin – Yitzchak Rabin’s daughter – will be accompanying us on a trip to the fascinating Rabin Museum. We will also have a private tour of the Knesset where we will be addressed by some MK’s for a unique insight into the some of the challenges facing Israeli politicians.

There will be some lighhearted aspects to the trip too and this will include a Jeep tour of the Carmel Mount area and hospitality in a Druze village near Haifa.

During the mission we will be staying in Tel Aviv and all accommodation, travel and meals are included in the price. If you are

already planning to be in Israel at that time, you are welcome to join us when we arrive on Sunday 13th November.

This is the first Jewish Child’s Day Mission to Israel, and we would really love you to join us. There are limited spaces and the trip is generating a lot of interest, so reserve your space without delay!

For more information about the mission please go to www.jcd.uk.com/support-us/events/all/israel/mission or please email [email protected].

20 Years of Gourmet Dinners On the 16th May, 140 guests enjoyed a sumptuous banquet at the exclusive China Tang at the Dorchester. With huge thanks to our committee of dedicated trustees, who organised an evening of fine dining and great fun!

For over 20 years this committee have worked tirelessly to arrange a gourmet supper in aid of Jewish Child’s Day. This year they raised in excess of £45,000. On behalf of all the children who will benefit from their hard work – thank you!
