DAY 2 - GOD OF WONDERS: ESCAPE FROM EGYPT Service Script

COUNTDOWN TIMER (5 min): Start countdown video five minutes prior to your VBS start time. ANNOUNCEMENTS (30 min) Use this overview along with the lesson slideshow when preparing/presenting your announcements. Welcome: Hello and welcome to the God Of Wonders VBS! Over the next five days, we are going on an epic adventure as we learn more about the life of Moses and discover God’s purposes and promises for our lives. Each day as we follow the exciting story of Moses, we will discover that, like Moses, we can experience God’s mighty power in our lives! But first, we have some announcements. VBS Guidelines: To make this VBS the very best it can be, let’s talk about some important guidelines.

● Be Safe: Let’s all read Proverbs 1:33 together.

● Be Respectful: Next, let's read Matthew 7:12.

● Be Responsible: Finally, let’s read Colossians 3:21. Name Tags: Is everyone here wearing a name tag? Good job! We’ve got some new kids and leaders here for our VBS adventure, and our name tags will help us get to know each other. Leader Introduction: Speaking of our leaders, why don’t we have every leader come forward so we can get to know them! As we introduce your leaders, be sure to say, “Hello!” Award Badges: Every leader has been asked to be on the lookout for kids who display excellent character during our VBS week. When they see it, they’ll give you one of these Award Badges. At the end of the day, we’ll enter every badge that’s been awarded into a big prize drawing! Escape From Egypt Introduction: We told you earlier about how we’ll be looking at the exciting life of Moses over our VBS week. Today, we are going to look at the second chapter in this story: Escape From Egypt. This story follows Moses as he makes one of the worst decisions of his life and must face the consequences. But in the end, Moses learned that God’s plan is greater than even his worst mistakes. As we explore today’s Bible lesson, we’ll discover that even when we fail, God’s promises help us look forward to an eternal reward.

TEACHING 1: ESCAPE FROM EGYPT (30 min): Worship: Have your worship team lead songs they feel help reinforce the themes of “God Of Wonders” and “Escape From Egypt.” Here are some song suggestions.

1. God of Wonders 2. Revelation Song 3. Our God 4. Some May Trust in Horses

Lesson Video: Have your kids sit in groups. Once everyone is settled, start the video. Lesson Teaching: Use this overview along with the lesson slideshow when preparing/presenting.

● Read: Exodus 2:11-22, Hebrews 11:24-25, and Acts 7:22-29

● Goal: To help children identify the treasure Moses saw in his future that would cause him to give up all the riches of Egypt. As an Egyptian, he had everything the heart could desire—fame, fortune and all the glories of the world at his disposal; as a Hebrew, he would experience slavery, poverty, and the abuse of evil taskmasters. Only a great treasure could make it worth the sacrifice. Moses knew that the Egyptians’ reward was temporary, but the treasure of God’s mercy and goodness was eternal.

● Overview: Born a Hebrew slave and raised as a prince of Egypt, Moses was torn between two

identities. As Moses grew into adulthood, his thoughts and affections turned away from Egypt and toward his fellow Hebrews. One day, he witnessed an Egyptian mistreating a Hebrew slave. He took revenge by killing the Egyptian and burying him in the sand. Moses’ terrible act was quickly discovered by Pharaoh. In fear, Moses fled to the land of Midian where he rescued seven daughters born to a man named Jethro. Moses married one of Jethro’s daughters and over the next 40 years, in the land of Midian, God would do a mighty work in Moses!

● Teaching Points: Compare the treasures of God with the treasures of the world.

Think of the things you treasure most—the virtual world of video games, clothes, acceptance of friends, popularity, fame, fortune, security, endless vacations, toys, treats, freedom, etc. Some of those things are good and fun, but how long will they last? Things rust and break, people can disappoint, money comes and goes, treats and vacations only last for a brief time, and we have an enemy who specializes in robbing our joy. Read and discuss: Matthew 6:19-20.

Big Idea & Memory Verse: Use both of these slides to bring your teaching to a close. Choose volunteers to come forward and read these slides to the group!

● Big Idea: The treasures this world offers are nothing compared to the eternal treasures of God.

● Memory Verse: By faith Moses, when he was grown up, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh's daughter, choosing rather to be mistreated with the people of God than to enjoy the fleeting pleasures of sin. Hebrews 11:24-25 (ESV)

GROUP GAME 1: No Escape (20 min): This game is played just like sharks and minnows. But instead of a shark, start with one Egyptian, and instead of minnows, everyone else starts as a Moses. Supplies: None. Set Up: Have one child who is “it” (the Egyptian) stand in the middle of the room, while all other children line up together on one side of the room. Rules: The game begins with all children trying to walk/run from one side of the room to the other. If they get tagged, they are also “it.” This continues until everyone gets tagged “it.” No one escapes! Purpose: This game get your kids thinking about how Moses tried to hide killing the Egyptian, but ultimately got caught. Even if we think no one sees what we do, God always knows. SNACK/BIBLE QUIZ (15 min): During snack time, play today’s Bible Quiz video. SKIT & SMALL GROUPS (40 min): Skit Time: Remind kids what they learned earlier in today’s Lesson Video. After, assign each group a portion of today’s video transcript. Give creative suggestions and encourage the groups to build a skit around their section of the transcript. After groups have had time to prepare, have them deliver their skits one group at a time.

Q&A Small Groups: Have groups circle up for a small group discussion time. Each group will discuss a series of questions based on today’s Lesson Video. Use today’s Q&A slideshow and Q&A discussion guide document as tools to get the most out of this time. Each series of questions has two parts: the first question is designed to help kids remember what they have been shown in the video, and the second is designed to help apply what they have learned. It is good to have the Host/MC moderate this time by reading the slideshow and setting time limits for each part of the Q&A discussion.

GROUP GAME 2: Egyptian Scavenger Hunt (20 min): During this scavenger hunt, your kids will have the opportunity to find extra award tickets for the drawing at the end of the day. Supplies: Extra printed Award Cards (these are found in your downloadable Swag Pack). Set Up: Throughout your VBS space, hide extra Award Badges. Make sure to make some difficult to find. Rules: After you have hidden your Award Badges, set your kids loose to start searching. As kids find award badges, write their names down on them and enter them into your end of day drawing. Purpose: This game is designed to get your kids thinking about hidden awards/treasure. Use this game to remind your kids that just because God’s treasures are not seen, it doesn’t mean they aren’t real. Sometimes the very best things in life aren’t found right on the surface, we have to search for them! SNACK/BIBLE QUIZ (15 min): During snack time, play today’s Bible Quiz Video. TEACHING 2: ESCAPE FROM EGYPT TAKE HOME (20 min) Lesson Video: Refresh your kids’ memories with a second viewing of the Lesson Video. Take Home Teaching: This teaching should be approached like a short devotional thought. The goal of this time is to give kids some big thoughts from today’s lesson that they can take home with them.

Take Home Teaching Outline: Moses was reminded throughout his life about what God had called him to be and about his identity as one of God’s own. Before the students leave today, remind them who Scripture says they are:

1. 1 John 3:1: “See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God ; and so we are. The reason why the world does not know us is that it did not know him.”

2. 1 Corinthians 12:27: “Now you are the body of Christ and individually members of it.” 3. Galatians 3:28: “There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is no male

and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.” 4. Romans 8:17: “And if children, then heirs—heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, provided we

suffer with him in order that we may also be glorified with him.” 5. 2 Corinthians 5:20: “Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ, God making his appeal through

us. We implore you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God.” 6. 1 John 4:4: “Little children, you are from God and have overcome them, for he who is in you is

greater than he who is in the world.” 7. Romans 8:37: “No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us.” 8. Ephesians 2:10: “For we are his workmanship , created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God

prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.”

Big Idea, Memory Verse & Closing Prayer: Finish your take home teaching by reminding students of the Big Idea and Memory Verse. After, close in prayer.

● Big Idea: The treasures this world offers are nothing compared to the eternal treasures God offers.

● Memory Verse: By faith Moses, when he was grown up, refused to be called the son of

Pharaoh's daughter, choosing rather to be mistreated with the people of God than to enjoy the fleeting pleasures of sin. Hebrews 11:24-25 (ESV)

● Closing Prayer: Dear Jesus, help us to keep our sights on you and your Kingdom, which are

eternal. Help us to understand that whatever we lose in this life cannot be compared to what we will gain through salvation and eternal life. We ask these things in Jesus’ name, Amen.

PRINT ACTIVITIES (10 min): Each day of the God of Wonders VBS comes jam-packed with print activities. Give each leader a packet of activity printouts, pencils, pens and crayons. CLOSING ANNOUNCEMENTS (30 min): Wow! What an amazing day of VBS! I loved today’s Big Idea that reminded us that God is offering us eternal treasures that are so much better than anything found in this world! And do you know what that means for our lives? It means that even if we fail, like Moses, God is faithful and kind. He always treats us so much better than we deserve!

● Award Badge Drawing: During this time, honor each child who received an Award Badge by acknowledging them in front of the group. After, place all badges into a large container and draw winning badges. Give each winner a prize pack.

● Tomorrow’s Preview: First off, I want to say how proud I am of you all for earning your Award

Badges. Well done! Tomorrow, you’re going to have another day filled with fun, learning and more awards. And even more exciting, we’ll get to talk about the next chapter in Moses’ story: The Burning Bush! In this amazing Bible story, we’ll discover that, like Moses, we can really know the Living God.

● Dismiss Children: This is a great time for leaders to introduce themselves to the parents of the

children in their group.
