The Legal Definition

Behavior resulting in an environment that causes a student fear, anxiety, shame, or embarrassment. It affects the student’s ability to be in school.

Sexual Harassment vs. Flirting

• Feels “bad”• one sided• feel unattractive• is degrading• feel powerless• power based• negative touching• unwanted• illegal• invading• demeaning• sad/angry• negative self-esteem

What should you do if you’re sexually harassed?

• TELL THE HARASSER TO STOP!

• TALK TO YOUR FRIENDS.

• WRITE DOWN EVERYTHING THAT HAPPENED.

• AVOID BEING ALONE WITH HARASSER.

• TALK TO AN ADULT.

• ASK A PARENT TO CONTACT THE SCHOOL.

• ACKNOWLEDGE THEIR FEELINGS. They can feel differently than you think they should

• ADMIT your behavior, if you behaved as they say you did.

• ACCEPT RESPONSIBILITY for the consequences of your behavior. Agree to make amends.

• APOLOGIZE• EXPLAIN why you behaved as you did.

For example, “I really like you and didn’t know how to show you…”

DO NOT….• BLAME anyone else for your behavior. You are responsible for your

conduct.
