Carousel Academy - Lancaster UPK Daily Home Activities Please use the following activities in the event that school is closed for an extended period of time. Day 1 Literacy: Read a book together. Before you read, look at the cover, the title, the author, and illustrator. Predict what the story will be about. Discuss the pictures, the story, the setting, beginning, middle, end, and the different characters. Write your name on a plain sheet of paper. Write one or two of the letters we have learned so far. (L, F, E, H, T, I, U, C, O, Q, G, S, J, D, P, B) To practice writing letters, use crayons (or a broken crayon, if your child struggles with their grip.) Use blank sheets of paper to write. If your child needs to trace letters, write it first with a gray marker or a highlighter. Please see the attached sheet (Handwriting Without Tears) for the correct way to form letters. *Different ideas to practice letters and writing: Go on a letter hunt around the house, find letters in books, look at classmates’ names, write a letter to a friend, practice writing in shaving cream, playdough, sand, sidewalk chalk, markers, crayons, pens, popsicle sticks, pipe cleaners, etc. Math: Rote counting: Have your child count from 1 to as high as they can go. Day 1

Literacy:

• Read a book together. Before you read, look at the cover, the title, the author, and illustrator. Predict what the story

square, rectangle, triangle, oval, diamond/rhombus, hexagon, star, and heart).

*Continue to practice counting from the Day 1 activities.

Fine Motor:

• Draw a picture of your family and what you like to do together. Practice writing the names of family members

underneath the picture.

Gross Motor:

*Continue to do the various gross motor activities from Day 1.

Day 3

Literacy:

Math:

• Patterns: Find something in your home to make a pattern with (blocks, food, coins, etc.) For example, use two different

colored blocks to make a two-part pattern: □□□□□□

*Continue to practice counting from the Day 1 activities.

Fine Motor:

• Draw thick black lines and/or shapes on a piece a paper and have your child practice cutting. Make sure their thumb is

up and their elbow is tucked in.

Gross Motor:

*Continue to do the various gross motor activities from Day 1.

Day 4

Literacy:

*See Day 1 (Pick a different book, letter, and writing activity.)

Math:

• Sort: Find objects from around the house and sort them by their attributes (size, color, shape, etc.) Use stuffed animals,

Legos, food, rocks, sticks, etc.

*Continue to practice counting from the Day 1 activities.

Fine Motor:

• Create a piece of art by tearing pieces of paper. Start by tearing big pieces and gradually tear smaller pieces. Use glue

sticks or squeeze a glue bottle to put the pieces onto a sheet of paper.

Gross Motor:

*Continue to do the various gross motor activities from Day 1.

Day 5

Literacy:

*See Day 1 (Pick a different book, letter, and writing activity.)

Math:

• Colors: Collect objects from around the house and sort them by color. For example, “find me something that is red”.

Practice colors that tend to be more difficult to identify, such as black, brown, gray, and white. Take out a board

game, such as Candy Land, to practice colors, counting one-by-one, and taking turns.

*Continue to practice counting from the Day 1 activities.

Fine Motor:

• Have your child dress themselves by zippering, buttoning, snapping, and if they are ready to, tie their shoes.

Gross Motor:

*Continue to do the various gross motor activities from Day 1.

Day 6

Literacy:

Math:

• More or Less: Using objects or food, make two different piles and count how many are in each. Have your child tell you

which is more or less.

*Continue to practice counting from the Day 1 activities.

Fine Motor:

• Peel stickers, tape, Band-Aids, and put them onto paper. If you have them, use hole punches, shape punches, and/or

letter punches.

Gross Motor:

*Continue to do the various gross motor activities from Day 1.

Day 7

Literacy:

*See Day 1 (Pick a different book, letter, and writing activity.)

Math:

• Adding and Subtracting: Using objects or food from around the house add to or take away and ask your child how

many in total or how many are left. (For example, at breakfast lay out 5 cheerios and add 2 more and ask them how

many are there altogether.) Sing songs such as Five Little Monkeys, Five Green Speckled Frogs, Five Little Ducks, etc.

*Continue to practice counting from the Day 1 activities.

Fine Motor:

• Using tweezers or tongs (or their pointer finger and thumb) pick up small objects and put them into a small container.

(Objects can be beads, pasta, cotton balls, marshmallows, pom poms, etc.)

Gross Motor:

*Continue to do the various gross motor activities from Day 1.

Day 8

Literacy:

*See Day 1 (Pick a different book, letter, and writing activity.)

Math:

• Number Concepts: Show your child a number and have him/her show that amount using objects from around the

house.

*Continue to practice counting from the Day 1 activities.

Fine Motor:

• Use recyclable materials such as empty boxes, paper towels rolls, etc. and have them create using glue, tape, scissors,

etc.

Gross Motor:

*Continue to do the various gross motor activities from Day 1.

Day 9

Literacy: *See Day 1 (Pick a different book, letter, and writing activity.)

Math:

• Number Order: Write numbers 1-10 on separate pieces of paper. Help your child put the numbers in correct order. To extend the activity, have your child close their eyes, take away a number, and ask your child which one is missing. (Save these numbers for tomorrow’s activity.)

• Follow Steps: Make a meal together, follow the recipe, measure the ingredients together, and talk about the order of the steps.

*Continue to practice counting from the Day 1 activities.

Fine Motor:

• Sprinkle salt, flour, or oatmeal onto a cookie sheet and practice writing lines, letters, numbers, shapes, etc. Gently

shake the tray to erase.

Gross Motor: *Continue to do the various gross motor activities from Day 1.

Day 10

Literacy: *See Day 1 (Pick a different book, letter, and writing activity.)

Math:

• Writing Numbers: Use the cards from the day before, and have your child write the number by using dry erase markers, crayons, markers, etc.

*Continue to practice counting from the Day 1 activities.

Fine Motor:

• Build with small Legos, put puzzles together, play a board game with small pieces, use sidewalk chalk, water the plants

with a spray bottle, use a turkey baster to transfer water, etc.

Gross Motor: *Continue to do the various gross motor activities from Day 1.

Day 11

Fine Motor:

• Write your name, in the middle of a piece of paper, then trace it with different colors and decorate around the paper.

Gross Motor: *Continue to do the various gross motor activities from Day 1.

Day 12

Literacy: *See Day 1 (Pick a different book, letter, and writing activity.)

Math:

• Size Order: Line up animals, dolls, etc. in order from tall to short. *Continue to practice counting from the Day 1 activities.

Fine Motor:

• Make shapes with sticks (real sticks, popsicle sticks, or toothpicks).

Gross Motor: *Continue to do the various gross motor activities from Day 1.

Day 13

Literacy: *See Day 1 (Pick a different book, letter, and writing activity.)

Math:

• Number Recognition: Spread the enclosed number cards on the floor, call out a number, and have your child swat that number with their hand or a fly swatter.

*Continue to practice counting from the Day 1 activities.

Fine Motor:

• Make any type of structure (home, building, cage for animals, etc.) using sticks or blocks.

Gross Motor: *Continue to do the various gross motor activities from Day 1.

Day 14

• Ten Frames: Say a number aloud and have your child put that amount into the ten frame. (For example, say “show me 2” and your child will put one penny in each box to represent the number 2.)

*Continue to practice counting from the Day 1 activities.

Fine Motor:

• Cut out your favorite foods from grocery store ads and glue them onto a piece of paper.

Gross Motor: *Continue to do the various gross motor activities from Day 1.

Day 15

Literacy: *See Day 1 (Pick a different book, letter, and writing activity.)

Math:

• Ten Frames: Using the ten frame enclosed, put objects in the boxes to represent a number. Have your child count and then write that number.

*Continue to practice counting from the Day 1 activities.

Fine Motor:

• Go outside and cut the grass with scissors or cut playdough.

Gross Motor: *Continue to do the various gross motor activities from Day 1.

Day 16

Literacy: *See Day 1 (Pick a different book, letter, and writing activity.)

Math:

• High and Low: Using the enclosed number cards or a deck of cards, set out two cards at the same time. Have your child determine which number is higher and lower. (aka War)

*Continue to practice counting from the Day 1 activities.

Fine Motor:

• Make worms by cutting pieces of string, ribbon, or strips of paper. Use tongs or tweezers to pick them up and place

them into a separate container.

Gross Motor: *Continue to do the various gross motor activities from Day 1.

Day 17

• Counting: Gather toy cars, dolls, dinosaurs, etc. and have your child count how many wheels are on the cars, how many legs are on the dolls, etc.

Fine Motor:

• Cut strips of paper and make a road for your vehicles or accessories for your dolls or dinosaurs.

Gross Motor: *Continue to do the various gross motor activities from Day 1.

Day 18

Literacy: *See Day 1 (Pick a different book, letter, and writing activity.)

Math:

• Memory: Put 5 objects onto a plate. Have your child cover their eyes and you take away one. Have them guess which one is missing. Increase the amount of objects as you play.

*Continue to practice counting from the Day 1 activities.

Fine Motor:

• Practice your name using Q-tips dipped in paint or water. If you would like to make homemade water colors, stick a

marker in a cup of water.

Gross Motor: *Continue to do the various gross motor activities from Day 1.

Day 19

Literacy: *See Day 1 (Pick a different book, letter, and writing activity.)

Math:

• STEM Activity: Make a fort in your house using pillows, blankets, cushions, etc. Talk through your plans together. *Continue to practice counting from the Day 1 activities.

Fine Motor:

• Draw a picture of the changing weather. Draw a bare tree trunk and add leaves by tearing pieces of paper and gluing

them onto the branches.

Gross Motor: *Continue to do the various gross motor activities from Day 1.

Playdough Recipe

• 2 cups of white flour

• 1 cup of salt

• 2 cups of water

• 2 (generous) tbsp. of oil

• 4 tsp. of Cream of Tartar (spice section in store)

• Food coloring

1. Combine ingredients in microwavable bowl. 2. Stir well. 3. Microwave on high for 3 min. 4. Carefully remove and stir well. Some of the playdough will still be gooey. 5. Microwave on high for another 3 min. 6. Remove and stir well. 7. Let cool and knead the dough until it is soft. 8. Store in an air tight container or a Ziploc bag.
