Parent Workshop Writing and the Home Reader Program
Last Tuesday we held our first Parent Workshop on Writing for the year. Mrs Renee Wilson, our K-2 Instructional Leader, led the session. We had 11 parents attend. The attendees took away some important tips and pointers to help their children with writing at home. Please keep an eye out on our Dawson PS Skoolbag account where we will post further tips and pointers to assist your children with writing at home. I must also mention how impressed I am with our students and their writing. Since our Open Classroom writing session, the amount of students who have been writing at home and bringing in their work to show their teachers, and me, has been wonderful to see. In addition to this, it is equally pleasing that more students are reading at home as a part of our home reading program. This term, I am pleased to announce that more students have reached the ‘40 nights of reading’ milestone and will be attending a lunch with myself and Mrs St John this Wednesday. Each student will receive a sausage sandwich and a book of their choice. There is no doubt that creating an educationally connected community has positive impacts on student learning, and this is certainly evident with these initiatives. I thank you for your continued support and encouragement.

Last Friday our Semester 1 Student Reports were sent home. I hope you found the new report format both informative and easy to navigate. NAIDOC Day - Tuesday 2 July, No assembly Friday
The Aboriginal Committee have been working hard to make this Tuesday’s NAIDOC day celebrations memorable and cultural rich for all our students and community. Please join us from 1:30pm for a BBQ under the COLA. This will be followed by a special NAIDOC day assembly on the netball/handball courts.
Please note that as we will be holding a whole school assembly on this day there will be no whole school assembly this Friday.
PBL Rewards Day
Term 2’s PBL Rewards day will be held this Friday. This day is for any student who has completed their PBL expectation chart (8 Dawson Merits - each Merit is for a specific behaviour). Students will have the privilege of coming to school in mufti, watching a movie and eating popcorn.
Students who received 30 Caught You Being Good’s (CYBG’s) this term will be invited to attend the Principal’s Morning Tea on Wednesday 24 July.
Supervision Changes Semester 2
From next term, the following supervisory changes have been made. These changes have been made to improve collaboration, communication and support.
Kindergarten and Year 1 and 2 Mrs Carolann Blazey
Stage 2 (Year 3 and 4) Miss Danielle Schroeder
Stage 3 (Year 5 and 6) Mr Stuart Sterling
Please be aware that your child’s class teacher is the first contact most issues arising at school. However, for some instances, you may need to organise a meeting with the stage supervisor.
K-6 Assembly - New Hall projector
As highlighted in the Week 8 school newsletter, I proposed a change to the scheduled weekly assemblies to fortnightly, as well as changing all our assemblies to K-6. The reasons mentioned for these changes were:
● we are a K-6 school and should celebrate student achievement as a whole school; ● we have a large hall that more than adequately caters for all our students and parent community; ● parents with children in both K-2 and 3-6 would only need to attend assemblies once a fortnight rather than
weekly. As all community members have responded positively to the proposed changes, the above mentioned changes will now come into effect next semester. This means our first K-6 assembly will be held on Friday Week 2 (2 August). As

we will be handing out more awards as there will be more students present, we will be starting all assemblies at 1:50pm to accommodate this.
A new assembly roster will be developed and sent out this week. It will also be posted on our Skoolbag app.
In other exciting news, over the holidays our hall will be fitted with a new ceiling projector. This will keep the stage clear for award winners and performances.
Holidays and Return to School Dates
As always, I hope everyone has a lovely time with their family over the 2-week holiday. The first day of Term 3 for our students is Tuesday 23 July.

DAWSON P.S NEWSLETTER ISSUE 10, 2019
Week 10 is Planning Week for our teachers. During this week, each teacher has a day to work closely with the Assistant Principal and Instructional Leader or Deputy Principal and the teachers and support teachers on the same stage.
The teachers will look closely at data that has been harvested from the Assessing Literacy and Numeracy (ALAN) website. We will also analyse Reading Level data and school based Writing and mathematics data. This data will drive our teaching and learning for TERM 3. It also informs us of what students need additional supports.
During Planning Week, we will assign Support Teachers to small groups of students who require additional support to meet stage outcomes. If your child is chosen to receive, additional support a note will sent home informing you of this.
This planning day also gives teachers the opportunity to look at syllabus documents and map out what content will be taught and most importantly how it will be taught.
Well done to those students who have started to use their writing books at home. Nothing makes me happier than a student who is proud of the additional work they have done at home. I encourage all students to continue to use their writing books over the holidays as well as continue to access WUSHKA and log their reading hours.
I wish everyone a safe and happy holiday!
Mrs Plowman

The Preschool has been following a children’s interest in Bees after they discovered a lot of bees in our garden visiting the flowers. In Week 8 we had Mrs. Peoples’ husband who is a beekeeper visit us with an educational hive. Some children got to try on the special bee suit and everyone had a taste of real honeycomb from his hive. At the end we watched videos taken of how Mr. Peoples harvested the honey from his backyard and used a smoker to keep the bees calm.

In KS, we have been learning how to place objects into equal groups. With the cold weather on a sunny day, we went outside to enjoy the warmth. Quite often, we learn without realising we are being taught something.
During this lesson, the students were able to understand that our groups needed to have the same number of teddy bears in each group. We discussed what happens when the groups are not the same and how they need to all have
the same number in each; otherwise, we cannot call the groups equal. This learning forms a base for the students to understand multiplication and division in the later years.
Here are KS using chalk and teddy bears to organise our objects into groups. We rolled a dice to determine how many groups we needed to make. We drew circles on the concrete with our chalk. Then we rolled the dice again so we knew how many to place into our groups. After all our groups had an equal number, we worked out how many
teddy bears we had altogether.
The language we used to express our learning was ‘6 groups of 3 is 18’.

Over the past few weeks stage 1 have been super busy developing their informative writing skills. Students have been focusing on a range of animals and using a variety of methods to research them such as books, posters and
websites. It’s great to see so many students enjoying their writing time!!
For science, stage one have been ‘mixing it up’. We have been experimenting with a range of solids and liquids, both together and
separate to see what it creates and how they combine. This week we looked at ink and the way it reacts when
it comes into contact with water.
2MB have been working on many concepts in numeracy, but this week we really enjoyed volume
and capacity. We experimented with a range of containers and found that some of them played tricks
on us. Some containers looked smaller than others but actually had a greater capacity.
This week, students also enjoyed their final session of life skills. It has been a great opportunity for students to learn strategies to cope with different situations. Not only did
they enjoy the excitement of the games, but also the peaceful moments of relaxation.

Writing in 4P For the past few weeks, 4P students have been learning about informative texts. This week we have been focusing on procedural texts and the important features that need to be included. 4P were excited to learn how to cook chocolate fondue and write its recipe. 4P also enjoyed eating it!

5/6R have been focusing on the above question in Geography this term. Students looked at our wider community and neighbouring countries and then it made it specific and relatable to us with the question below:
We have been investigating how we use the Grass Area. Using different geographical tools such as soil analysis, soil depth, habitat observations and grass endurance, we determined that there might be an opportunity to improve the maintenance and durability of the grass area.
We have taken photos of the area, created staff and student surveys to gain opinions of other stakeholders. We researched the benefits and negatives of both artificial grass and real grass. We have created approximate costs to returf the whole area or to lay artificial grass using local businesses and services. We are currently completing an experiment to determine what conditions grass needs to grow and what happens long term to artificial grass that is exposed to all conditions.
This week we will be creating a submission to go to Mr Sheen that will outline what we believe should happen to the grass area.

Song Room with 5S
This term 5S have been lucky enough to attend song room lessons.
Throughout the term, we have been learning to player a number of different instruments, with one of the favourites being the electric guitar.
The students were given the opportunity to learn to play the instruments to the song; Sunflower as well as adding lyrics and some dance moves. It has been fun being able to watch the students participate altogether as a class, with everyone given the chance to have a turn at the different instruments and sing along

On Wednesday 26th June, the Stage 3 students visited UWS Nirimba campus. The students had the opportunity to explore the campus and experience some of the courses you can study at university. Each class attended three workshops and had the chance to experience aspects of Nursing, Coding and Design.
The students enjoyed exploring the university campus and meeting current staff and students. They learnt a range of skills and had lots of fun designing bags, coding Sphyros and bandaging their friends injured limbs! This was a wonderful experience for our students and reminded them of the possible opportunities that await them in the future.

“Encouraging regular school attendance is one of the most powerful ways you can prepare your child for success - both in school and in life. When you make school attendance a priority, you help your child get better grades and develop healthy life habits. When students are absent for fewer days, their grades and reading skills often improve - even among those students who are struggling in school. Students who attend school regularly also feel more connected to their community, develop important social skills and friendships, and are significantly more likely to graduate from high school, setting them up for a strong future.”
At Dawson we have a school goal of 94% attendance every day (this means they attend school roughly 195 days of the year). We understand that as winter kicks in more students will be at home with the flu, however please be reminded to contact the school by phone or using the skoolbag app to explain your child’s absence. If not please ensure they have an absence note or doctor’s certificate in their bag when they return to school.
Thanks

In Term 3 (starting in week 2), we are hosting the “Bringing up Great Kids” - Parent workshops. This course will take place on Wednesday afternoons, starting at approximately 1.30pm.
‘Bringing Up Great Kids’ Parent workshops are built upon a belief that all parents need good support to be the kind of parent they aspire to be for their children and provides self-care strategies for parents.
The program supports thoughtful communication with children leading to opportunities for children and parents to engage in great positive exchanges.
It will also help parents to see the child’s perspective or experience of the world and understanding the stages of brain development in children.
A separate note will be sent out to all families regarding this opportunity.
