Aims:
Comprehension:
• To enable students to comprehend different texts by equipping them with the techniques
of skimming and scanning through the given text, along with deduction and inference.
• To make sure they understand the central idea of the passage by discussing it in class.
• To encourage students to use their own words in both types of discourse.
• To teach them the art of writing a summary of a given passage.
• By making they outline the main points in the text.
• Summing up the main idea of one paragraph in one sentence.
• Writing them down in the form of a paragraph in their own words.
Vocabulary and Expressions:
• Introduction of new words and their correct usage in sentences.
• Students will learn how to use a dictionary effectively to find out meanings of difficult
words which will also aid in increasing their vocabulary.
• Students will develop the skill of using a thesaurus which includes finding out synonyms
and antonyms.
• They will be taught how and where to use similes, idioms, proverbs, and metaphors
which will make their writing appear more refined.
• Students will acquire vocabulary through word games, word puzzles, and other
vocabulary exercises.
Composition:
• Students will learn how to write different types of essays which includes both „Narrative‟
and „Descriptive‟.
• In Narrative essays students will learn the art of writing about different characters and
character development, dialogue writing, setting and situation.
• In Descriptive essays students will learn how to explore their five senses and expand their
imagination to write detailed descriptions which appeal to the sense of sight, sound,
smell, taste and touch.
• Students will also learn the art of brainstorming over the topic and making an outline of
their essay before writing it.
• Students will be taught different techniques for constructing a paragraph which includes
the following parts:
Deciding an appropriate title of the essay.
Forming the topic sentence which revolves around the main idea in the paragraph.
Building the paragraph with ideas or details that support the main idea.
Ending the paragraph with a suitable concluding sentence.
All paragraphs should be linked together in order to sustain the reader‟s attention.
• Students will be expected to write complete, detailed essays which will include the
following:
A proper introductory paragraph.
At least three main body paragraphs.
A concluding paragraph which will emphasize upon the topic.

• Students will develop the skill of not only increasing the level of their imagination, but
also display it in the form of a carefully, constructed essay, which will capture and
sustain a reader‟s interest.
Grammar:
• Knowing how and when to use Proverbs and Metaphorical expressions.
• Focus on spellings by having regular dictations in class.
• To know how to punctuate a sentence properly, especially one in direct speech.
• Revision of conversion of Active voice into Passive voice and vice versa.
• To be able to convert a sentence in Direct speech into Indirect speech, and also
converting Indirect speech into Direct speech.
• Revision of Verb tenses which includes Past, Present and Future tenses and Auxiliary
Verbs.
• Reinforcement of „Parts of Speech‟.
• Revision of Prefixes and Suffixes as well as Past and Present Participles.
Scheme of Assessment:
• Two monthly tests of 20 marks each, will be conducted in each term for the purpose of
revision.
• Class tests will be conducted from time to time with a variable marking scheme to make
sure students carry on revising their lessons.
• Worksheets will be given in class for the purpose of making the students practice and will
be conducted in class only.
• Finally, a Mid-term and Annual Examination containing 100 marks each , will be
conducted at the end of each session.
• Oral quizzes will be conducted in class to ensure that students have prepared their
lessons.
Assessment Objectives:
• Students will be made to read out paragraphs to improve their reading skills along
with pronunciation.
• Group discussions will be held so that students become more familiar with speaking
the language by listening to it being spoken by a qualified instructor. It will also help
them to be able to express themselves comfortably.
• Specified writing tasks will be given so that students focus on improving their writing
skills which includes the ability to punctuate properly and write complete sentences.
• Writing tasks also includes free writing to test and encourage the student‟s level of
imagination.
• Vocabulary exercises help reinforce the knowledge and skill of using both a
dictionary and thesaurus.
• In comprehension, students will learn how to comprehend, that is, obtain meaning
from the given text.
This tests the ability of the student to read not only in between but also
beyond the lines of the text.
Secondly, it assesses the student‟s ability to focus on the important parts in the
text that require more attention, in order to answer the given questions.

Paraphrasing: The poet states that the rush of life provides people with no

feet. Here the poet has used a poetic device known as personification. He
personifies the mother nature as a beautiful lady, whose charming looks
are ignored by us.
