I am a metallurgist with Bachelors, Masters and PhD degrees in the field and have spent a lot of time developing special steel for various applications. Prior to joining Aisha Steel, I was associated with People Steel Mills for about 20 years. We developed and introduced more than 300 grades of alloy steel, as per international quality standards, to the local manufacturing sectors. Presently, at Aisha Steel Mills, I am focusing on producing and supply- ing quality cold rolled coil (CRC) to the local market. Please talk us through the journey of Aisha Steel Limited. Aisha Steel Mills started as a joint venture of Arif Habib Group, Metal One Corp (a subsidiary of Mitsubishi Corp of Japan) and Universal Metal of Japan. Subsequently, with mutual agree- ment, majority of the shares were acquired by Arif Habib Group. All the equipment acquired was from leading Japanese manufacturers. The existing name plate capacity of the mill is 220,000 tons of CRC per annum. Presently, Aisha Steel Mills is undergoing expansion to increase CRC production capacity to 450,000 tons. A continuous galvanized line with an annual capacity of 250,000 tons is also being added taking over- all production to 700,000 tons per annum. The products will be sold in the local market and the surplus will be exported. How do you see the performance of steel industry in Pakistan and where does your brand stand? Aisha Steel Mills, like all other sophisticated set ups, had to over- come initial teething problems. The mill is now operating at 100 per cent capacity. The CRC produced at Aisha is in accordance with strict Japanese quality standards. Currently, Aisha is a market leader both in terms of quality as well as quantity. How is the response from the market so far? The market response is very posi- tive. Aisha Steel holds fairly large stock of finished goods which helps the manufacturers to order just in time. Even if the goods are made to order, the delivery period is in days compared to months in case of imports. The payment is in local currency and the buyers are not exposed to exchange rate fluctuations. All of the above suits the local manufacturers. What makes your company stand out from competitors? Quality of product and timely delivery makes all the difference. We are recognised for both. Local manufacturers meet about 50 per cent to 60 per cent domestic demand while the rest is imported from numerous coun- tries all over the world. Demand of Galvanized Iron (GI) is around 600,000 tons per annum, taking cumulative demand of flat steel in the coun- try to 1.2 to 1.3 million tons per annum. Once the expansion is com- plete, Aisha Steel will be pro- viding GI to the market.
