Prayer of Confession
Merciful God,
we confess that we have not loved you with our whole heart.
We have failed to be an obedient church.
We have not done your will,
we have broken your law,
we have rebelled against your love,
we have not loved our neighbors,
and we have not heard the cry of the needy.
Forgive us, we pray.
Free us for joyful obedience,
through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Words of Assurance
Pastor: Hear the good news: Christ died for us while we were yet sinners;
that proves God’s love toward us. In the name of Jesus Christ, you are forgiven.
People: In the name of Jesus Christ, you are forgiven.
All: Glory to God. Amen.
Scripture Reading Deuteronomy 6:4-9
RW Williams (9:00); Brittany Viehmann (11:00)
Hear, O Israel: The Lord is our God, the Lord alone. You shall love the Lord your God with
all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your might. Keep these words that I am
commanding you today in your heart.
Recite them to your children and talk about them when you are at home and when you are
away, when you lie down and when you rise. Bind them as a sign on your hand, fix them as
an emblem on your forehead, and write them on the doorposts of your house and on your
gates.
Lector: This is the Word of God for the people of God.
People: Thanks be to God!
Sermon Rev. Dianne Lawhorn Affirmation of Faith The Apostles’ Creed
I believe in God the Father Almighty,
maker of heaven and earth;
And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord:
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
born of the Virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, dead, and buried;
the third day he rose from the dead;
he ascended into heaven,
and sitteth at the right hand of God the Father Almighty;
from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy catholic church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and the life everlasting. Amen.
Gloria Patri virginia
Lesser Doxology, 3rd - 4th cent.; music: Charles Meineke, 1844
Prayers of the People
The pastor will end each petition with: Lord, in your mercy,
to which the congregation responds: Hear our prayer.

Trust in the Lord Donna Butler
The Men of the Chancel Choir
He is the thought beyond all thoughts, the gift, the answer to our prayers.
When we seek Him, we will find a strength beyond compare.
Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding.
Trust in the Lord with all your heart. Oh, trust in the Lord.
Serve Him with a willing mind and with a heart of pure devotion.
Toss your doubt and fears aside, and let Him guide your way.
Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your understanding.
Trust in the Lord with all your heart. Oh, trust in the Lord.
Though there be dark and uncharted space with worlds beyond our sight,
still may we trust His love and grace and wait to see His light.
Trust and obey, for there’s no other way to be happy in Jesus, but to trust and obey.
Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your understanding.
Trust in the Lord with all your heart. Oh, trust in the Lord.

Doxology gladly we praise you
The Sacrament of Holy Communion
All are welcome to receive Holy Communion. As a part of our safe reopening, we will
continue using the individually wrapped Communion elements for a season. Following
the Great Thanksgiving you are invited to come forward, receive the juice and wafer,
return to your seat, and partake while seated. A gluten-free station will be available.
The Great Thanksgiving
The Lord be with you.
And also with you.
Lift up your hearts.
We lift them up to the Lord.
Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
It is right to give our thanks and praise.
…And so, with your people on earth and all the company of heaven we praise your name
and join their unending hymn:
Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might,
heaven and earth are full of your glory.
Hosanna in the highest.
Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.
Hosanna in the highest.
…And so, in remembrance of these your mighty acts in Jesus Christ, we offer ourselves in
praise and thanksgiving as a holy and living sacrifice, in union with Christ's offering for us,
as we proclaim the mystery of faith.
Christ has died; Christ is risen; Christ will come again.
The Lord’s Prayer
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name.
Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.
Communion Music
If I Forget, Yet God Remembers! Daniel Pedersen
If I forget, yet God remembers! If these hands of mine cease from their clinging,
yet the hands divine hold me so firmly that I cannot fall.
And sometimes I am too tired to call for him to help me,
then he reads the prayer unspoken in my heart, and lifts my care.
Words by Robert Browning (1812—1889) © 2005 Augsburg Fortress
Prayer of Thanksgiving
Eternal God, we give you thanks for this holy mystery
in which you have given yourself to us.
Grant that we may go into the world in the strength of your Spirit,
to give ourselves for others, in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Missional Prayer Focus for this week is Habitat for Humanity of the Charlotte Region.
This organization, an affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International, seeks to put God’s love into action
by bringing people together to build homes, communities, and hope. They believe that everyone deserves
decent, affordable housing and that this is vital to creating strong families and communities since
affordable housing promotes health, education, and financial stability. Habitat for Humanity has two
main programs: Their new homeownership program provides low-income families a path to
homeownership with an affordable mortgage. Families must meet income and residency requirements,
commit to homeowner and financial education classes, and serve 400 “sweat equity” hours. Their critical
repair program meets essential health and safety repair needs for families who already own a home and
whose limited income makes it difficult, if not impossible, to afford these essential repairs.
Donate, support, or volunteer at our local Habitat for Humanity at www.habitatcltregion.org/.
$50,000.00 of the 2021 DUMC Missional Impact budget will be supporting this ministry.

Congregational Care and Support Groups
Summer Book Study: A Grief Observed While many of us may be going on much-needed vacations this
summer, we know that grief does not take time off. If you are mourning the passing of someone dear to you,
or perhaps grieve in other ways, we invite you to join us for our Summer Book Study of the C.S. Lewis
classic A Grief Observed. Lewis wrote this little book in 1960 shortly after the death of his wife, Joy, and it
has proved helpful to so many experiencing grief. Join Rev. Jim Humphries on Thursday mornings on July
8, 15, and 22 at 10:00 a.m. in Room 212/214. Purchase the book independently ahead of class. Register on
the church website under Registrations.
The LGBTQIA Family and Friends Support Group will host Rev. David Hockett on Tuesday, July 13
at 6:30 p.m. in Room 220 in the Alexander Education Building. Rev. Hockett will be answering questions
and listening to our stories. RSVP to Beckie McCall at [email protected].
Ally Button The LGBTQIA Family and Friends Support Group welcomes you to take an Ally button to
support our LGBTQIA youth. Research has demonstrated that knowing that others support and accept them
can significantly reduce the suicide rate among LGBTQIA youth. Please consider being an ally and wearing
a button as a reminder for these youth of Christ’s boundless love for them. Buttons are located in the
Gathering Space.
Davidson Care Ministers DUMC offers Davidson Care Ministers (DCMs) to help you during difficult
periods of grief, depression, anxiety, loneliness, and other life challenges. DCMs are gifted and well-trained
laypersons who are experienced in offering Christ-centered care, to help guide you to healing and whole-
ness. If you have questions or would like to learn more about how you can request care from a Davidson
Care Minister, please contact Rev. Jim Humphries at [email protected] or 704-892-8277, ext.
234. If you have emergency after-hour pastoral needs, contact our on-call pastor anytime at 704-770-1264.
