Welcome to the AT&T Home of TomorrowOn behalf of all of our participants and sponsors, welcome toThe AT&T Home of Tomorrow. This design and idea showhome will have more visitors than any other in history!

A revolutionary partnership between Hillcrest Custom Homesand Champion Homes, this 1,850 square foot home was built in30 days. But, it doesn't look like it. And that's the point.

In many ways the story of the Home of Tomorrow is as muchabout the craftsmen and building techniques as it is about thehigh-tech wizardry that makes up the home's intelligentsystems. We employed a new concept in home-building calledoff-site stick-building. The exterior of the home is constructedindoors in a controlled environment and then moved to thehomesite and placed on a pier and beam foundation. Theinterior of the home is custom-finished on-site.

The home is built to UBC Code and features 9 foot ceilings, 2"x 6" framing, high energy efficiency levels, a 100% masonryexterior, and is loaded with high-quality materials, brand-nameproducts and amenities. It has been designed to fit comfortablyon a typical 55 by 130 foot subdivision lot. The standard homeplan is priced at $99,000 excluding land and can be built inabout 45 days.

Enjoy your tour!

IT’S ALL IN THE WRISTTime is of the essence for this wireless networkprototype phone/watch from AT&T Labs. Userscan communicate directly through the wristdevice or use the detachable ear-piece/microphone. When the earpiece is worn, incoming calls and pages are audible through theearphone. Otherwise pages can be received invibrating mode. Speech-recognition technologylets users speak into the device to getinformation, such as sports scores or stockquotes, from the Internet.

RING IN THE NEWTelephones may never look the same as high-speed Internet accessincorporates into next-generation devices. It looks like a regular phone butuses a touch-screen interface instead of buttons. The screen also serves as asketchpad where users can scribble the next theory of relativity or play tic-tac-toe with friends. Callers can also use it to view photos and even orderfrom their favorite restaurants directly from the menu. Researchers at AT&TLabs have prototyped this device where all applications run over the network– eliminating any risk of viruses.

DOWNHILL RACERSSkiers can use the built-in wireless phone to tell friends what a great timethey’re having as they whoosh down the slopes. They can even transmit videoof their skiing experience over the Internet using the built-in camera. Thewireless Internet link lets skiers pull down maps (projected onto the visors) ofthe course below to see details and directions for upcoming turns, twists, warnings, and alerts. The prototype goggles from AT&T Labs also provide full-featured stereo sound so you can listen to your favorite music all the waydown the slope and back up again. In case of emergency, the goggles arelinked to the Global positioning Satellite system to provide rescuers withlocation information.

FOLLOWING IN THEIR FOOTSTEPSWorking parents at the office can play with their children at home using thisdigital videophone mounted inside a transparent ball. Toddlers will knowthey’re being followed as parents use a remote control console (such as atouch-tone phone or videophone with a trackball) to direct the motorizedacrylic ball to trail behind children as they roam around the house. The KidsCommunicator prototype from AT&T Labs enables parents and children tosee and hear each other through wireless Internet links.
