When Russell was five years of age, his family moved from Glas-gow to Minorca, where he became interested in the guitar, imitat-ing the likes of Andrés Segovia and Julian Bream.

Today, Russell resides in Galicia, but spends most of his time touring, appearing in such cities as New York, London, Tokyo, Los Angeles, Madrid, Toronto, Amsterdam, and Denver. He is regularly invited to play in music festivals.

During his studies at the Royal Academy, Russell won the Julian Bream Gui‐

tar Prize twice and received a scholarship from the Ralph Vaughan Williams 

Trust. Later he won numerous international competitions, including the Andrés (Continued on page 4)

Dear Members and Society 

Friends:  

Along with April showers, this 

month in Napa, we are delighted to 

have house guests from sunny Scot‐

land, Major James V.G. Bain and his 

wife, Shirley.  Jim will speak at our 

next meeting, giving us an update on 

the Royal Regiment of Scotland.  Af‐

ter 40 years of service with the Argyll 

and Sutherland Highlanders, the 5th 

Battalion, and the Royal Regiment of 

Scotland, Jim retired from Her Maj‐

estyʹs Service just two weeks ago. 

Past President Tom McLaughlin did a great job obtaining a specially 

designed Society kilt pin in a limited quantity that we will sell for $25 

each.  The pins will be ideal for your own use as well as for special gifts.  

We will have the pins available at our next meeting, so bring your check 

book. 

Next Saturday, April 14, is the Caledonian Clubʹs Tartan Ball at the 

Marriot Hotel in San Ramon.  My wife Terry and I have been invited to 

represent the St. Andrewʹs Society.  Seated at the table the Society has  

purchased, our  other representatives will include Bill Jaggers and 

Yolanda, Kent Walker and Madilyn, David Campbell and Nancy, Jean 

McDonald Allen, and our Piper Jack Cunningham. 

It is with sorrow that I must inform you that one of our very loyal, 

longtime members, Past President Dick Childs passed away at home on 

March 27th with his wife Janet at his side.  Dick was 85 years of age and 

served as our president from 1983 to 1986.  A memorial service will be 

held April 28, 2012 at Saint Johnʹs Episcopal Church, 14 Lagunitas Road, 

Ross, CA at 1 oʹclock p.m. 

Hoping to see you all at our next meeting, Monday, April 16 at Green 

Street.  Weʹll have refreshments at 6:30 p.m. and start the meeting 

promptly at 7:30 p.m.

Segovia Competition, the José Ramirez Competition, and Spainʹs Fran‐

cisco Tárrega Competition.  

Russell was named a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Music in Lon‐

don in 1997.  

In May 2003 he was awarded the honour of being made ʺadopted 

sonʺ of Es Migjorn, the town on Minorca where he grew up.  

In November 2003 he was given the Medal of Honour of the Conser‐

vatory of the Balearics.  

In 2004, he won a Grammy Award for best instrumental soloist in 

classical music for his CD Aire Latino.

His discography also includes a recital CD with transcriptions of 

Bach, Handel, and Scarlatti, an all‐classical album called Nineteenth 

Century Music, and the complete works of Francisco Tárrega on Opera 

Tres.

FLOWERS OF THE FOREST

 

Richard M. D. Childs, Jr. 85, passed away 

peacefully at home with his wife by his side 

on Tuesday, March 27, 2012. Dick was born 

and raised in Boise, Idaho as the only child to 

parents Richard Sr. and Louise Ashley Childs. 

Dick served in the US Navy and is a WWII 

Veteran. He completed the V‐12 program at 

the University of Colorado and attained his 

Bachelorʹs Degree from the University of 

Idaho. He had just started his Masterʹs pro‐

gram at Stanford University when his father 

unexpectedly passed away and Dick returned 

home to manage the family investment busi‐

ness. Dick started his career as Director of the 

Budget and Director of Administration for the State of Idaho from 1956 ‐ 

1961 and it is believed that at 30 years of age he was the youngest person 

in the U.S. to hold this position. After moving to CA, he was hired as the 

Director of Finance and Business Affairs for Sonoma State University in 

Rohnert Park, CA. During these years he served on 18 accreditation com‐

mittees assisting many colleges in securing their university status 

(including St. Maryʹs College in Moraga, CA). He retired after 20 years, 

and then commuted to El Cajon, San Diego County, CA to manage the 

failing East County Performing Arts Center turning it into a profitable 

venture for the city after a few short seasons. Dick was a long‐time mem‐

ber and past president of St. Andrewʹs Society of San Francisco and also 

served as Senior Warden at St Johnʹs Episcopal Church in Ross, CA. He 

was a Mason, involved in Rotary, and member of the Wine & Food Society 

for Northern California, as well as serving on the Boards of Sunny Hills 

Services and Geyserville Inn. Then finally in their golden years, Dick and 

Jan were able to travel the world as they had once dreamed. Dick is sur‐

vived by his beloved wife of almost 53 years, Janet, daughters Monica 

(Eric) Henderson and Julie (Joe) Haley; and 3 grandchildren Tyler, Mi‐

chael, and Ashley. There will be a Memorial Service celebrating Dickʹs life 

on Saturday, April 28th, 1pm at St Johnʹs Episcopal Church, 14 Lagunitas 

Road, Ross, CA (415‐456‐1102). Donations in Dickʹs memory may be made 

to St. Johnʹs Episcopal Church, St. Andrewʹs Society of SF, or the American 

Diabetes Association .  (Published in San Francisco Chronicle on April 8,

** Dick served as President 1983 through 1986. The only four year term 

President since Charles U. Doig. Dick also served as Chairman on the 

Board of Trustees 1987 through 1994. It was about this time that Dick put 

together the plans for the Saint Andrews Society Foundation and was itʹs
