Wintertime Costume Design

The play is set in the Northeast area woods in 2002

It takes places in Johnathan’s winter vacation home

The fact that the play is set in the modern era has an overall effect on what the characters would wear

The sets effect on the Costume Design

Characters (Francois)

• The character of Francois is different from the other characters in the play in that he try's to dress sexy

• He is French and is for the most part wearing a bathrobe in the play

• He Marias lover and eventual partner

In this picture Francois Is demonstrated from the point of view of a Broadway play, but I wouldSay for my point of view this best shows The costume fit for Francois which isA bathrobe.

Characters(Maria)• Maria is the mother of Johnathan and she is married to Frank

and her lover is Francois • Her costume is also a bathrobe but its not like François

because she is not trying to be sexy in front of her son, unlike François who is trying to be sexy for Maria.

These are the costumes I would envision the Maria having on especially in the beginning of the play

Characters( Johnathan)

• Johnathan is in love with his fiancé Ariel• In the beginning of the play he is not wearing coat • His costume would be wintertime men's clothing that is

suited towards a youthful man who is newly engaged

I would design his clothing/ costume to include light sweaters, winter boots, scarf, and jeans

Characters (Ariel) Ariel is newly engaged to Johnathan Like Johnathan she is young so her costume

should reflect a young woman's wintertime outfit in the 2000s

She also does not wear a coat in the beginning of the play

Her costume should include winter boots, winter dress sweater, scarf

Other Men Characters ( Frank, Edmund, Bob)

All these men are older and would be wearing winter clothing for there costume but unlike Johnathan it would consist of heavier clothing like winter jackets

They are in two settings outside and inside Johnathan's house so there clothing should reflect when they change setting in the play

OTHER WOMAN CHARACTERS( BERTHA, HILDA, JAQUELINE) Bertha and Hilda are lovers and neighbors of Maria,

they are older women so there winter clothes should not be as young as Ariel's

Jaqueline is François past lover and is a doctor her clothing would be a bit younger because she try's to entice other men

Jaqueline would wear something like this as her costume

Bertha and Hilda would wear something like this as there costume

• In Act II the people attend a funeral that turned out to be fake because Maria did not die, so the characters are in typical funeral wear for coustume
