I’m very honored to be your Commander this coming year. Everyone deserves to be proud of making our post successful. First I want to say is thanks to everyone who puts in the effort to keep our post running. We have the best Ladies and Mens Auxilliarys in the state. We have Tom Sharp the best Quartermaster. Micheal and Dan have lots of new energy to bring into the post. Mike our Chaplain who does so much for us. Also Walt Decker who comes in every day, Our group of past Commanders Kenny Greenlee, Bob Humphery. John Fogarty, and Claude Gregoire, who are always willing to help. And also our Bar Staff who do a great job. And big thank you to Donnie Hamner. And all the others members who help out.

Women’s Auxiliary President’s Message

We are always looking for pictures, stories and items for the newsletter. Please contact

I am honored to begin another new year as your Ladies Auxiliary President. I want to thank the out-going officers for all their help this past year…Pat Sockwell (Senior Vice), Mary Hamner (Jr. Vice), Polly Hansen (Conductress), Donna Gleeson (Patriotic Instructor), Linda Walters and Tobi Snyder (Trustees).

We have a fine group of officers coming in this year…some returning members and some new members filling the vacating seats. Joyce Suarez will be the Senior Vice and her daughter, Tambra Briggs will fill the seat of Junior Vice. Ethel Taylor will be Conductress, Connie Addy will be the Guard with Mary Ann Martino moving from Guard over to Trustee. Joan Browning is filling the other open seat of Trustee and Deana Myrick as Patriotic Instructor. A great big thanks goes out to the returning officers: Nikki Fogelsonger as Treasurer, Kendra Sudigala as Secretary, Donna McLaren as Chaplin and Sherry Gregoire as Trustee.

We just got back from the annual convention in Orlando. It is great to see members from other posts that share our passion for the VFW. It is amazing to see how much they can accomplish in a year.

The past year was a busy one for us and I expect the upcoming year to be busier. Please, please, please…offer to help out any way you can this year. Don’t rely on the officers to do all the work. We want to plan a lot of fun activities – but sometimes are limited by who is available to help out. Any small amount you can do – is greatly appreciated.

I am looking for people to spearhead a few committees. Such as Hospital, Veterans Support, Legislative efforts, Youth Activities and of course the President’s Special Project of Cancer Research. Committee members do not have a lot of work to do. If you feel you can help out in any way, please call me at 352-610-2215 or email me at [email protected].

Please join me in a heartfelt congratulations to the elected officers of the Men’s Auxiliary of VFW Post 8681 for the 2013-2014 year. They are as follows: Senior Vice President; George Carey; Junior Vice President: Jeff Briggs; Treasurer: Don Hamner; Secretary and Chaplain: Jerome Hansen; One-Year Trustee: Charles Addy; Two-Year Trustee: Jim Christensen; Three-Year Trustee: Lynn Daffer.

These gentlemen, along with many of our members, bring a lot of ideas and energy to the Post. I look forward to working with them, as well as the leadership of the Ladies Auxiliary and VFW, to accomplish the Commander’s intent/goals during this elected term. The synergy of these three organizations, when working together, is phenomenal! I believe this will become obvious as we plan and execute post functions this year.

In closing, I want to thank the 2012-2013 Men’s Auxiliary Staff, led by President Rich Kooken, for their service and a job well done. We are fortunate to have many of those experienced officers on this year’s staff which will serve to facilitate our transition to the 2013-2014 term.

Veterans Prayer

We ask for blessings on all those who have served their country in the armed forces. We ask for healing for the veterans who have been wounded, in body and soul, in conflicts around the globe. We pray especially for the young men and women, in the thousands, who are coming home from Iraq and Afghanistan with injured bodies and traumatized spirits. Bring solace to them, may we pray for them when they cannot pray. We ask for an end to wars and the dawning of a new era of peace, as a way to honor all the veterans of past wars. Have mercy on all our veterans from World War II, Korea, Vietnam, Iraq, and Afghanistan. Bring peace to their hearts and peace to the regions they fought in. Bless all the soldiers who served in non-combative posts. May their calling to service continue in their lives in many positive ways. Give us all the creative vision to see a world which, grown weary with fighting, Moves to affirming the life of every human being and so moves beyond war.

Did you know…Early payment of your membership dues helps out in many ways. It allows the VFW to access funds earlier than normal. This allows us to have funds available for any kind of emergency. And, it alleviates any additional costs for mailing out notices. On the plus side, your Commander or Auxiliary President can report they are 100% paid, which reflects nicely on the post. So, although your payment might not be due until the end of the year, consider mailing in your membership dues as soon as possible.
