Tonight’s Lead Patron
Dear Patrons:
Davenport & Company LLC is a proud Lead Patron of The Richmond Forum, and we thank you for your attendance tonight. We are delighted to be part of our City’s success by supporting a series that promotes a broad range of thought-provoking ideas and fosters conversation among diverse groups. It is our great pleasure to be associated with a locally run and supported organization that is a premier leader in its field.
As an employee-owned investment firm headquartered in Richmond since 1863, Davenport has charted its own course, independent of the potential conf licts brought on by earnings pressures and outside bank holding interests. We offer a complete array of financial services, serving individuals, families, corporations, institutions, and state and local governments. We are known for attracting and retaining top talent by providing a dynamic, collegial environment where first rate professionals approach our clients’ needs individually and personally. Davenport has more than 400 employees in 15 locations throughout Virginia, North Carolina, and Maryland, and we were recently named one of the Top Best Places to Work in Virginia.

by delivering on the promise to place our clients’ interests side-by-side our own. As investors ourselves, we offer clients what we most value: professional guidance, common sense, high quality service and fundamental advice. Our investment philosophy is simple. We strive to manage our clients’ assets the way we manage our own: carefully, and with integrity. That philosophy is put to work—and daily to the test—by offering clients a variety of investment strategies, including, when suitable, the very same portfolios that comprise our own employee profit sharing plan. We are proud of our straightforward, long-term approach that has served our clients successfully for nearly a century and a half, and we see a vital and thriving future ahead of us with our next generation of leaders already in place.
Thank you again for joining us tonight. As an individual or corporation, we salute your support of The Richmond Forum, and eagerly anticipate its next season and ongoing success.

A century ago, America was amazed that Harry Houdini was able to hold his breath under water for three-and-a-half minutes. In the mid-1980s, an 11-year-old boy in Brooklyn, New York, was tying Houdini’s record in the neighborhood swimming pool. That boy was David Blaine, and in 2008, he smashed the world record by holding his breath underwater for an unbelievable 17 minutes and four seconds.
For more than a decade, David Blaine has been attracting the attention of the world, including the world’s leading scientists, with his high-profile physical endurance stunts. Starting his career as a street magician who appeared to do the impossible with a deck of cards, he was soon following in the footsteps of Houdini—seeking out that which seems physically impossible and doing it for real. To that end, he’s been buried alive for a week, survived on nothing but water for 44 days, stood atop a 100-foot-tall pillar with no safety net for 36 hours, and barely survived being encased inside a six-ton block of ice for three days and three nights.
While David Blaine is surely trying to amaze with the creativity and showmanship of his stunts, he is also on a very real and personal path of discovery about the extremes to which the human body can be pushed and the suffering that the human spirit can endure. Counted among his personal inspirations are his mother, Harry Houdini and writers Viktor E. Frankl, Primo Levi, Dostoyevsky and Herman Hesse.
Born in Brooklyn, New York, Blaine discovered his passion for magic at the age of four when he saw a magician perform in the subway. His single mother encouraged his passion and he began performing professionally for private parties when he turned 13. At 19,
he made his first television appearance and then immediately after, began doing private parties in St. Tropez and traveling around the world with his magic.
By the age of 23, Blaine had created, directed and produced an original television program titled Street Magic, which revolutionized the way magic is portrayed on television and garnered rave reviews by critics. Since then, Blaine has produced nine more specials, including Beautiful Struggle in 2010.
Blaine has performed magic privately for Presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush, Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, Bill Gates, Henry Kissinger and Mayor Michael Bloomberg, as well as President Dmitry Medvedev of Russia and other international leaders. He also performed alongside Michael Jackson and during the Super Bowl halftime show.
In 2010, Blaine performed magic for 72 straight hours in Times Square, raising nearly $100,000 for relief efforts following the earthquake in Haiti.
Blaine resides in New York City with his fiancée, Alizee Guinohet. The couple welcomed a magical daughter into the world in January.

A native of Richmond, Virginia, Janet Martin divides her time between New York City and Richmond. When not touring in Europe or the United States, she can usually be found writing or in the studio.
Janet’s guitar style took shape at an early age, influenced by bluegrass flat-picking, electric rock and blues. A bright new world opened up for her when she began listening to Led Zeppelin and Jimmy Page’s use of open tunings.
Janet’s acoustic work can best be described as hypnotic. Equally captivating is her electric guitar playing in which she pays homage to the early blues masters; Muddy Waters in particular.
With a vocal style that has been described as both dream like and soul stirring and guitar figures that are expressive, passionate and
seductive, Janet’s musical sound is unique among both female and male performers.
Her latest CD, Passage, was released in Europe in 2010. A concert tour of Germany and France is currently being scheduled for this summer. This will be Janet’s eighth overseas tour; each successive tour bringing her more and more fans in Europe and Scandinavia.
Janet can be found on the web at www.janetmartin.com
Tonight’s musical performance is made possible by the generous support of Moore Cadillac Company.

Named Richmond Broadcaster of the Year in 2007, tonight’s moderator has been riding the airwaves since she was 14. Known as Virginia’s Storyteller, May-Lily Lee’s observations and interviews celebrate the diverse fabric of the Commonwealth, and her pursuit of excellence in storytelling has earned her four regional Emmy awards. May-Lily’s passion is exhibited through her work on Virginia Currents, the most recognized and longest-running statewide television program in the Commonwealth, introducing Virginians to the quirky, the topical and the inspirational.
As a teen in the DC metro area, May-Lily developed a keen interest in magic and performed under the stage name “May-Ling the Magic Maiden.” She made regular appearances with her magic on WRC-TV’s Stuff and WJZ-
TV’s Bumblebunkers. Studying journalism at University of Maryland, she graduated early at age 19.
In l989, May-Lily began working full-time with PBS’ Community Idea Stations, and is still with them today, appearing over the years on such shows as Battle of the Brains, Behind the Lines, and Virginia Legislature: The Week.
Last year, the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences inducted her into the coveted Silver Circle at the regional Emmy Awards, honoring her contributions of the past quarter century.

Buried Alive (1999)Entombed below ground in a cramped plastic box, beneath a three-ton water-filled tank, Blaine survived for seven days on only a small ration of water each day. An estimated 75,000 people visited the site to peer through the water at Blaine, including Harry Houdini’s niece who said, “My uncle did some amazing things, but he could not have done this.”
Frozen in Time (2000)Blaine stood encased in a massive block of ice in Times Square for 61 hours, 40 minutes and 15 seconds. The stunt took a tremendous toll on Blaine physically and it was a week and a half before he was able to walk unassisted.
Vertigo (2002)For 35 hours, Blaine stood atop a 100-foot-high and 22-inch-wide pillar in New York City. With his legs weak from standing atop the pillar for so long, he ended the feat by jumping into a pile of cardboard boxes below.
Above the Below (2003)Blaine spent 44 days suspended 30 feet above the River Thames in a transparent Plexiglas case
measuring three feet by seven feet by seven feet. Blaine went without any food or nutrients and survived on just 4.5 liters of water per day. The effects of the fast were documented in the New England Journal of Medicine.
Drowned Alive (2006)Blaine was submerged in a water-filled sphere for seven days and seven nights, using tubes for air and nutrition. Doctors from Yale University have studied Blaine since to discover the human physiological reaction to prolonged submersion.
Guinness Book World Record (2008)On an episode of The Oprah Winfrey Show, Blaine achieved a new world record by holding his breath underwater for 17 minutes and four seconds.
Dive of Death (2008)Blaine attempted to hang upside down for 60 hours, but found it wasn’t possible.
The Atlantic Bottle Crossing
In the near future, Blaine plans to set himself adrift across the Atlantic Ocean in a bottle, an idea that came to him in a dream.
David BlaineEndurance Feats
In the tradition of early 20th century performers like Harry Houdini and “Carter the Great,” the posters promoting David Blaine’s various endurance feats are striking works of art. Our thanks to Mr. Blaine for allowing us to reproduce a
selection of these promotional posters here and to B&B Printing for the color. Illustrations by Mark Stutzman.
On September 24, 2008, David Blaine survived after hanging upside down 50 feet above the skating rink in New York City’s Central Park for 60 hours, then took a “dive of death” from a 44-foot-high platform.

Trinity Episcopal School Student Ushers
Trinity Episcopal School advocates service to one’s community as an important aspect
of individual character development and as an essential element in the creation of a strong
community. These Trinity students, selected from the School’s Honor Roll, serve as ushers
for The Richmond Forum this season. Through their service, the students facilitate an exchange of
ideas that broadens our understanding of the trends and issues shaping our lives and our community.
THE RICHMOND FORUM WELCOMES THE STUDENTS AND FACULTY OF TRINITY EPISCOPAL SCHOOL IN A SPECIAL PROGRAM DESIGNED TO CONNECT THE CLASSROOM, THE COMMUNITY AND CURRENT EVENTS.
IN ACADEMICS
We discover what motivates students and use that knowledge to challenge them
IN THE INTERNATIONAL BACCALAUREATE PROGRAM
Academics with a world view provide a competitive curriculum in a dynamic environment
IN THE COMMUNITY
We celebrate the differences that make us individuals and the common ground that makes us a community
WITH THE FACULTY
Building relationships based on mutual respect helps students realize their full potential
