Exercise #5

A search worksheet is provided at the end of the Practice Exercises to help in planning your searches.

1. (1 pt) Find U.S. patent 4,603,743.  Paste the citation below.

I clicked on the link for “Look Up Patent” and searched for: US 4603743 in the Number field. The following is the citation:

Hydraulic/mechanical setting tool and liner hanger (8608). Retrieved from http://search.proquest.com/professional/docview/933868261?accountid=

2. (2 pts) Find patents authored by Scott Kohn.  For whom does Mr. Kohn seem to work and what is his area of expertise?

From the “Look up Patent” page I clicked on the Look Up Inventors link. I searched the name field for Kohn, Scott. There were 4 different Scott Kohns, but 3 out of 4 had the middle initial I. There was only 1 plain “Scott Kohn”. This search returned 14 results. inv.exact("Kohn, Scott"). Several of the 14 results showed the Assignee as Tesla Motors, Inc. I assume this is whom Mr. Kohn works for. His area of expertise appears to be vehicle electronics, particularly batteries.

3. (2 pts) Create a search strategy to find all patents owned by Mattel, the toy company.  Paste the command below.

I followed the instructions on looking up owners in the Patents document. I used the Patent assignee (reassigned), Patent assignee (as published), and the Patent assignor fields. I used the “Look up New assignees” and the “Look up Patent assignees” to look up and include all variations of Mattell. This search returned 2812 patents: pare.exact("MATTEL" OR "MATTEL INC" OR "MATTEL INC." OR "MATTEL INC 5150 ROSECRANS AVE HAWTHORNE CA 90250 A DE CORP" OR "MATTEL INC 5150 ROSECRANS AVE HAWTHORNE CA 90250 A" OR "MATTEL INC 333 CONTINENTIAL BLVD.EL SEGUNDO, CALIFORNIA, 90245" OR "MATTEL INC 333 CONTINENTIAL BLVD. 4. (2 pts) Find patents on antennae that send a signal faster than the speed of light.  Select the two “best” (use your judgment) patents and paste their citations below.  Defend your selections, if necessary.  You may choose to highlight relevant text from the patent record. This was the most difficult question for me. I wasn’t sure what types of antennae or whether the transmission should be faster than the speed of light or some other aspect of it. It was somewhat confusing. I gave it my best shot:

I used the advanced search: (light speed antenna) AND faster. I found several results, but one was called Hyper-light-speed antenna (number 2 on the list).

Hyper-light-speed antenna (0002). Retrieved from http://search.proquest.com/professional/docview/931751938?accountid=143640

relates to a new type of antenna for transmission and...replace conventional antennas. It is believed that...transmit energy at a faster speed and over a greater

Next I got the idea to search based on the previous patent. I searched for: ab(light speed antenn*) with only 140 results appearing. This one was a Short-range vehicular radar system: Short-range vehicular radar system (1210). Retrieved from http://search.proquest.com/professional/docview/1241742563?accountid=143640

Both are faster than the speed of light and created fairly recently. I think they will do the trick!

(2 pts) Construct a search strategy using international class codes and keywords to retrieve the most recent patents on the topical treatment of alopecia or hair loss.  Describe your process.  Select five representative patents from different inventors and use the “Cite” function to create a list of records.  Paste these into your response.

I don’t know the codes for the patents on hair- loss treatment, so keywords will be necessary (and were instructed to us to use anyway). I went to the IPC site and found: A61P 17/00 Drugs for dermatological disorders, using the IPC Terms search.

Next, I searched for (A61P 17/00) and “topical” and “alopecia”. This gave me 1520 results. (I’m sure there are lots of hair creams out there!). I then changed the dates from 2009-2014 for the most recent patents with 77 results. Here are 5 treatments for alopecia: CONDITIONED CELL CULTURE MEDIUM COMPOSITIONS AND METHODS OF USE (1308). 5. (2 pts) Locate all of the patents for which Orville and Wilbur Wright are both listed as inventors. Describe the steps that you took to find the patent(s).  What challenges did you face? Use the “Cite” function to create a list of these and paste it below.

I used the Look Up Inventors link to find Orville, and Wilbur Wright. The difficult part was that I wasn’t sure if they had middle names or not. However, a quick Google search proved they did not. This was my search command: exact("Wright, Orville" AND "Wright, Wilbur"). I found 4 results: FLYING-MACHINE (0605). Retrieved from http://search.proquest.com/professional/docview/934224978?accountid=143640

6. (2 pts) Locate patents related to flight for which only one of the Wright brothers is listed as an inventor.  Describe your process.  Provide a citation for the patent and screenshots or attached images of the drawings for the patent.

I used almost the same search command as the previous prompt, except changed “and” to “or”. This gave me 13 results, though not all of them were related to flight. It looks like Wilbur was into asphalt as well. With this command: inv.exact("Wright, Orville" or"Wright, Wilbur") AND flight I found 4 results. Two of these had only 1 Wright brother listed, and there was only 1 mention of the word “flight” in

Method and means for drying components in the making of asphalt (6209). Retrieved from http://search.proquest.com/professional/docview/931895687?accountid=143640

Here is the one I found with 1 Wright brother and related to flight:

7. (2 pts) Suppose you are a librarian in a corporation or law library. You have been tasked to research patents owned by WABCO Automotive because the company is considering acquiring WABCO Automotive, and needs a comprehensive view into WABCO Automotive’s patent portfolio to analyze the value of the intellectual property owned by the company and complete due diligence regarding these assets.  How would you approach this task?  Explain your reasoning.

I would perform a comprehensive patent owner research process in order to conduct due diligence for a purchase of a company. This comprehensive research should

Page 6: davidalanowenseportfolio.files.wordpress.com · Web viewLIBR 244-11. Online Searching Fall 2014. M. Ziemer. Exercise #5 A search worksheet is provided at the end of the Practice Exercises

also be performed for mergers, analyzing legal rights, and licensing opportunities (as well as analyzing a company’s patent portfolio. In order to do this, I would search the Patent Assignee, New Assignee, and Patent Assignor fields for comprehensive owner searching of the ownership chain of title. I would use the “look up” links for assignees and assignors in order to find all variations of the WABCO company and include that in the search, so as to not miss any vital information.

8. (5 pts) Compare and Contrast. Repeat the above exercises using patents.Google.com.  Try not to use information that you gleaned from the ProQuest Dialog Searches or vice versa.  In the spirit of the assignment, approach the Google searches as though you only had as much information as you did when beginning the ProQuest Dialog search.  How does searching for patents via Google Patents compare to searching using ProQuest Dialog?  What do you perceive as the benefits and disadvantages of each?

See Google searches below. I’ll summarize here: With Google Patents, I felt I was limited to keywords. I couldn’t add a field or search specific fields. I did like the drop down menu via Search Tools. Google patents was fairly intuitive and you could find basically everything with “simple searches”. It was somewhat difficult with Google when I didn’t find relevant results; there wasn’t really any other method of limiting besides changing the keywords. There were no help or search tips that I could see.

Proquest Dialog was more effective, especially if you know what you’re doing or at least some good search techniques. For example, using the search form was about useless with Google, it did help to construct Proquest Dialog searches. I liked that I could go to search tips and use wildcards and my favorite, the * (asterisk) in Proquest Dialog as well as N/5, etc. If all these databases were free (Proquest, LexisNexis, etc,) I would prefer to use them! Google is a nice option for those with no money and access to the internet though!

Patents.Google.com search:

1. (1 pt) Find U.S. patent 4,603,743.  Paste the citation below.

Using Google I found this at the top of the page by searching: U.S. patent 4,603,743

Hydraulic/mechanical setting tool and liner hanger

2. (2 pts) Find patents authored by Scott Kohn.  For whom does Mr. Kohn seem to work and what is his area of expertise?

I searched for “scott kohn” and found 90 results, mostly “battery” related. Several of the results list Tesla Motors Inc, also, which would lead me to believe that he is involved with batteries and electronics in automobiles.

3. (2 pts) Create a search strategy to find all patents owned by Mattel, the toy company.  Paste the command below.

I created a search with “mattel” and received close to 400,000 results. I then clicked on “mattel, Inc” in one of the results which gave me a list of 4,950 results. This gave me a list of patents all owned by mattel.

4. (2 pts) Find patents on antennae that send a signal faster than the speed of light.  Select the two “best” (use your judgment) patents and paste their citations below.  Defend your selections, if necessary.  You may choose to highlight relevant text from the patent record.

I searched for “antenna faster than light”. The top 2 results were:

Hyper-light-speed antenna

Initial benefits of penetrating this new dimension include sending RF signals faster than the speed of light, extending the effective distance of ..

Faster than light speed two-way radio communications antenna

The antenna designed to transmit or receive an electronic intelligent signal such as ... The faster than light antenna eliminates this time factor."

5. (2 pts) Construct a search strategy using international class codes and keywords to retrieve the most recent patents on the topical treatment of alopecia or hair loss.  Describe your process.  Select five representative patents from different inventors and use the “Cite” function to create a list of records.  Paste these into your response.

I searched for “topical treatment for alopecia 2014” to find current treatments/creams for hair loss. The top 5 results were something I could use!

A topical composition for the treatment of alopecia

6. (2 pts) Locate all of the patents for which Orville and Wilbur Wright are both listed as inventors. Describe the steps that you took to find the patent(s).  What challenges did you face? Use the “Cite” function to create a list of these and paste it below.

This was somewhat difficult, but after a search of “orville and Wilbur wright”, I clicked on Orville’s name in the results list and scrolled down to find inventions with only “orvile wright” and “Wilbur wright”. Thankfully there were only 10 results to look at..

Mechanism for flexing the rudder of a flying-machine or ...

Draft-rigging for cars.

Draft and buffing gear or rigging for cars.

Flying-machine.

7. (2 pts) Locate patents related to flight for which only one of the Wright brothers is listed as an inventor.  Describe your process.  Provide a citation for the patent and screenshots or attached images of the drawings for the patent.

Since there were no results with just Orville in the previous section, I searched: inassignee: “Wilbur wright” and found 7 results. I then added –orville to the search, now

having 5 results. For some reason Wilbur was listed twice on a few of the results:

Here is an image URL to one of the inventions: Portable asphalt plant lifting and supporting mechanism

8. Explain your reasoning.+

I searched for WABCO Automotive and then WABCO Automotive complaints. I couldn’t find any negative results with this search. One good thing I could find was there stock information, which does let me know a bit about how well the company is doing and the history of it. http://www.wabco-auto.com/nc/wabco/

 PRACTICE EXERCISES

PATENT SEARCHING

20/20

The following questions were the sticking points:

#3 - Patents owned by Mattel - the best strategy on this is to search for PA,PARE(Mattel) in order to capture patents for which Mattel is the owner and those for which ownership has been transferred to Mattel,

#4 - Hands down the most problematic of the questions. Best search: TI(antenna*) AND fast* NEAR/3 "speed of light". Then, it was necessary to look beyond the first tab to the

claims and specifications to find the hit terms. Two good selections were the Hyper Light Speed Antenna and the Superluminal Antenna.

#8 - WABCO - similar to the Mattel search, it's important to include both PA and PARE in the search. However, to truly do due diligence in compiling a report that provides insight into the company's patent portfolio, it is necessary to also include the PAOR field, for patents that were previously owned by WABCO but transferred elsewhere.
