WHAT CAN SPONSORING DAVEBRING TO YOU.A LITTLE

DAVE.

Sponsorship makes the Olympics a realisation for Dave. Although drive, determination and passion can go a long way, support is essential to take opportunities at the top level.

Contributions of products, time and/or money are gratefully appreciated. In return, you will get great marketing opportunities and exposure during competitive events, including:

• Display of logo/brand identity on athletes and/or equipment (e.g. bobsled)• Display of signage at event site• Potential naming rights• Client entertainment at events• Personal endorsements by athletes/coaches• Identification in PR material and communications• Promotional displays at events• Display and use of equipment by individual athletes• Association of brands

From an early age it was clear that Dave’s attention started and finished with sport. Even at primary school where he was the captain of the school Football team, Dave confidently knew nothing else could come close to the enjoyment that competitive sport gave him.

Dave started playing football at under-8s age, followed by cricket at under-10s, as well as maintaining a keen interest in Judo alongside many other sports. This intense fascination with a variety of different sports continued throughout Dave’s school years.

Education in Sport & Exercise Science has run alongside Dave’s athletic development from college, all the way through to post graduate qualification. Knowledge and understanding in strength and conditioning techniques has played a vital role throughout his athletic career, resulting in Dave competing internationally for the Great Britain Bobsleigh team. Dave’s continued look towards Sport Science has presented him with gains in both physical ability and performance development.

Dave became a member of the Great Britain Bobsleigh team in August 2009. He was asked to join a squad of athletes after successfully fulfilling the vigorous selection criteria implemented by the British Bobsleigh & Skeleton Association (BBSA) and quickly realised that he had the right blend of speed, strength, and power required to be successful. Within two months of the initial BBSA testing, Dave was starting his first Bobsleigh season which endowed him with an experience of pure adrenalin, speed, and excitement.

With a whole host of top quality events on the horizon, Dave is determined to compete for Great Britain during the World Cup Tour, as well as qualifying for the upcoming 2014 Winter Olympics.

SPORTS SPECTACLE.A REAL

Bobsleighing and tobogganing are no longer “niche” sports, but exciting, annual highlights of the winter sports calendar.

Both men and women compete in the sport of bobsleigh, a sport that combines speed, power and agility. There are two person races for men and women. Men also have a four-man event. Bobsleigh is one of the original sports in the Olympic Winter Games.

The International Bobsleigh and Skeleton Federation (FIBT) has achieved steady growth in the international television coverage and market share of the two sports. As a result, there are over 25 sports television channels broadcasting events in bobsleighing and tobogganing.

In 1897, the world’s first bobsleigh club was founded in St. Moritz, Switzerland, spurring the growth of the sport in winter resorts throughout Europe. By 1914, bobsled races were taking place on a wide variety of natural ice courses.

In 1923, the Fédération internationale de bobsleigh et de tobogganing (FIBT) was founded and the following year a four-man race took place at the first ever Winter Olympics in Chamonix, France. A two-man event was added at the 1932 Olympics in Lake Placid, USA, a format that has remained to the present.

Bobsled racing began largely as an activity for the rich and adventurous who gathered at alpine resorts for weekends of competi-tion and partying. There was no such thing as training. Competitors simply bought or rented a sled, started out as a rider and then took the wheel after a few runs.

By the 1950s, however, the sport as we know it today had begun to take shape. As the critical importance of the start was recognised, strong, fast athletes in other sports were drawn to bobsledding. Track and field competitors, gymnasts and others who could deliver a vigor-ous push at the start were much sought after.

More athletic crews went hand-in-hand with advances in sleds and tracks. Today, the world’s top teams train year-round and compete mostly on artificial ice tracks in sleek high-tech sleds made of fibreglass and steel.

From the small core of alpine nations who originally embraced bobsledding, the sport has since expanded around the world to include warmer countries such as Jamaica, Japan, Australia and New Zealand.

Although the traditional bobsleigh powers remain strong, other nations have begun to show their strength. The 1998 Olympic Winter Games in Nagano, Japan, turned out to be festivals of firsts in bobsleigh. For the first time, two gold medals and two bronze medals were awarded at the Olympics. Seven medals were won by teams from six different nations, whilst eight nations finished among the Top Ten in both two-man and four-man events.

The sport continues to expand. Lake Placid, a traditional site for bobsleigh competitions, built a challenging new combined track in 1999-2000. A new venue was added for the 2006 Olympic Winter games in Cesana, Italy, and a new facility was built for the 2010 Games in Vancouver/Whistler, Canada.
