General Guidelines for Parents when making any Payments to the school: Preferred method of payment is BPay. EFT/credit card facilities are available over the counter at the main office. Correct money is required for all cash payments, as there is not always access to change. Please do not send large amounts of cash with your child. Receipts will be issued through your child’s classroom. Payment plans for EEI fees are still available. Payments for Voluntary Contributions to assist in purchasing new playground equipment are welcomed at any time of the year. To help the office in finalising accounts, where possible, please limit any cash payments in the last week of any school term. Principal’s Message

As we are nearing the end of term 1 it is timely for me to acknowledge the combined efforts of students, parents and staff. Collective efforts of all parties have ensured a positive and successful beginning to the 2107 school year. Our Foundation students all 86 of them have now settled in to the routine of school life. They will be the stars of the show next Friday morning when they will be welcomed to their first Friday assembly. As is the tradition they will be asked to stand at some point during the proceedings for that all important photo shoot. This image will definitely be seen or, (will come back to haunt them possibly) at their graduation ceremony in 2023. We know already they are not a shy bunch and I am confident they will be able to quickly demonstrate the Kingsville bow next week with flair. Parents of Foundation students you are of course most welcome to come and witness this initiation and celebration. Please note however that, seating is limited in the hall and if you are not available there will be many opportunities to acknowledge the foundation students during their 7 year primary school journey. Congratulations also to our 560 year 1–5 students. They have all taken up the challenges of moving to their new year level and have had a very successful first term.

Let us not forget also our 100 year 6 students who have moved into their final year of primary school. They are described by many who know them as simply a delight and, I absolutely endorse this. As such a high percentage of them began at Kingsville in Prep they are living examples of what epitomizes a Kingsville student in every sense of the word. There have been many highlights during this first term including information nights, parent teacher meetings, swimming programs, a number of guest speakers. In addition, Sports Gala and Ride 2 school days, excursions, and of course our amazing Hot March Night just to name a few. They have all been memorable. Achievements have also included the establishment of the 2017 – 2018 School Council, subcommittees and, working parties. Our student leaders have been appointed and our Class Parent Representatives have taken up their roles. In addition to all of this there have been many more individual, group, or whole school achievements which have occurred during the 9 weeks and have enriched all learning environments. We will finish the term with our traditional Kingsville Easter Hat Parade on Friday 31st. This is a delightful way to farewell the term and, it has developed over the last few years from a school assembly style event to a gala occasion – the millinery event of the year.

Student health and wellbeing I would ask all parents to read again Page 2 of February 24th Newsletter information under the heading of “Providing details when children are away from school”. This article provides detail relating to infectious diseases and the school environment. It is vital that parents

1. provide reasons for student absence and details of any medical diagnosis

2. Instruct their children in best practice techniques to assist with health and wellbeing including effective hand washing (see link to World Health Organisation and a video on how to wash hands hygienically

Dangerous driving by KPS Parents Reminders to parents about taking extra care whilst driving in the vicinity of the school are ongoing in communications throughout the year. Recently I have had reports and have witnessed a number of examples of driving and turning outside the school which, pose a danger to the lives of students. I implore parents to think and drive in a manner which protects our students. Please see below a message from a parent Renae Allen – who has expressed her concern about unsafe driving practices. “A reminder that when parking for drop off on Bishop Street to please use the turning circle at the end of the street to turn around, rather than driveways. This is not only much safer, given there are children everywhere, but it also demonstrates respect for each other as we ALL have places to be after we drop our children off. Thank you”. Easter Raffle donations Last week we only had a few chocolate and other Easter type donations. Currently, we have tables set up near the main office with a number of “designer” baskets filling up with beautiful Easter themed donations. These as usual have come from very generous Kingsville families and, it is wonderful to see students bringing down their contribution and adding them to the collection. So thank you to everyone who has donated so far and we look forward to more contributions early next week. Don’t forget we will need them all by Wednesday to ensure fundraising team members are able to include them in the Easter basket prizes they will be putting together.

Walking, Riding or Scooting to School Samuel Eason – Ride 2 School coordinator Walking, Riding or Scooting to school can improve children’s health and wellbeing. The Australian Department of Health and Ageing recommends children do at least 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity every day. Children who walk, cycle or scoot to and from school have higher levels of physical activity and improved cardiovascular fitness than children who don’t. At Kingsville we promote a healthy lifestyle and encourage everyone to walk, ride or scoot to school as regularly as possible. To raise the profile of this initiative we hold, in conjunction with the National Ride to School Day, our ‘Walk and Wheel’ to school day. Encouraging students (and their families) to leave the car at home and get a taste of the benefits, ease and fun involved in choosing to walk or wheel. Once again we had a fantastic response to the event with the number of walkers, scooters and riders tripling in comparisons to a normal school day. A special congratulation goes to the two grades who have taken out the illustrious Ride2School trophies. These are: 1SP – the Wheelies trophy, with 60% of students riding to school 6SE – the Walkies trophy, with 87.5% of students walking to school On top of that there was an active travel rate (walking or wheeling %) of 95% of students on the day – an incredible number. As a growing school and the value seen by the community in supporting this initiative we appreciate your reflections on the experience for you and your children. The perspective of those involved allows the school to make decisions on tuning the experience. Feedback can be sent through to the office via email: kingsville.ps@edumail.vic.giv.au The experience of being involved in the day may encourage children and their families to make travelling to school a walking or wheeling option. But there are a few safety issues that you and your child may need to consider when walking or wheeling to school; such as does your child know how to be street smart? Being street smart means knowing how to keep yourself safe when you're alone or with other kids. Whether you're walking to school or to the bus, hanging out on the playground, or riding your bike in your neighbourhood, being street smart helps you stay safe. When you're street smart, you know your way around, you know how handle yourself in tough situations, and you're able to "read" people.

Stranger Danger Safety Tips ▪ stay with a group. Always walk with at least one

friend, two or three is even better ▪ if a stranger offers you a ride, say “NO!” and stay

far away from their car ▪ if a stranger follows you on foot, get away from

him or her as quickly as you can. You can run and yell loudly, “HELP!”

▪ if a stranger follows you in a car, turn around and go the other direction

▪ never leave school with a stranger ▪ tell a trusted adult if a stranger is hanging around

the school, playground, or public bathroom ▪ never accept things from a stranger ▪ if a stranger asks you a question, don’t talk to

them ▪ don’t go anywhere with a stranger Walking or Wheeling Safety Tips ▪ cross only at corners or marked crosswalks. (If

there is a crosswalk button, press the button and wait for the walk sign to indicate that it is safe to cross.)

▪ stop at the curb or edge of the road, look left, then right, and then left again before you step into the street. If a car is parked where you are crossing, make sure there is no driver in the car. Then go to the edge of the car and look left right-left until no cars are coming. Keep looking for cars while you

are

crossing ▪ walk, don’t run. This gives time for drivers to see

you before you enter the roadway Walking or wheeling to school is something everybody can be involved in. Younger children are encouraged to walk or wheel with their parents, and older children on their own when parents decide it’s safe. Common parent concerns about letting their children walk or wheel to school alone – such as perceptions of stranger danger, traffic concerns and neighborhood crime – fade away when parents walk or wheel with their children from a young age, teach them about walking or wheeling safely, and gain confidence in their children’s safety sense

JUNIOR HOCKEY UNDERWAY AT FOOTSCRAY HOCKEY CLUB!

The junior hockey program at the Footscray Hockey Club has been award-winning again in 2016, and has geared up for an even bigger year in 2017. We have had the pleasure of delivering Hockey Clinics in your school in Term 1 and meeting some of your lovely students and families at the Come n Try sessions.

Our coaches were delighted in the enthusiasm and exceptional behaviour of your students. It has been a pleasure to be involved with your school community. Spots remain open in all of the different age levels 4 year olds to 17 year olds. It’s an equal opportunity sport where we have 50% female and 50% male membership with opportunity to play in girls and mixed teams, great facilities, low fees and terrific organisation.
