WORDS THEIR WAY PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT
On our Student-Free Day last Friday the teachers spent the
day par!cipa!ng in a professional development workshop
on approaches for teaching spelling and vocabulary.
We were very fortunate to have our workshop facilitated
by Linda McIntyre, who has worked both in Australia and
the United States as a literacy consultant, with a par!cular
focus on improving student’s skills in spelling and language.
The workshop provided our teachers with further learning
on our new spelling and vocabulary program—Words Their
Way.
Specifically, we looked at how to assess student’s spelling/
vocabulary skills, the different stages of spelling/vocabulary
development in children, and how to effec!vely teach
spelling/vocabulary to ensure that all students improve
their skills and strategies.
All staff found the day to be highly valuable and valida!on
that our school is on the right path to improving student
outcomes in spelling and vocabulary.
JUMP ROPE FOR HEART
It is wonderful to hear that many students have already
began collec!ng money and sponsors to support them on
our Jump Rope for Heart day. A reminder that students are
able to get sponsors to pledge a dona!on to support their
par!cipa!on in the Jump Rope for Heart program. 50% of
the money raised will go towards the new playground for
our school and the other 50% to the Heart Founda!on to
support research into children’s heart disease. The top
three student fundraisers from each classroom will receive
a prize to recognise their efforts.
Jump Rope for Heart will culminate with our Jump off Day
which will be held in the a>ernoon on Friday 11th Septem-
ber. On this day parents are invited to come to the school
to watch our students show off their skipping skills. Parents
are also encouraged to take part and/or help out by spin-
ning a rope or manning an ac!vity sta!on. Any parents
interested in assis!ng please see Mrs. Pa@on.
Principal’s Report FOOTWEAR FOR PHYSICAL ACTIVITY
As we prepare for our Jump Rope for Heart
day we will be skipping every Wednesday
at school. We ask that students please
wear/bring appropriate footwear for par!cipa!ng in this
ac!vity.
The Grade Three-Six students do Physical Educa!on on
Monday’s and Tuesdays. Again, we ask that students
please wear/bring appropriate footwear for par!cipa!ng
in this ac!vity.
GRADE THREE-FOUR CAMP
Our Grade Three-Four students have spent the past three
days on camp at Billabong Ranch near Echuca. The cool
weather didn’t deter the students who enjoyed par!ci-
pa!ng in ac!vi!es and making friends with students from
the other Campaspe Cluster schools. Ac!vi!es on camp
included ropes courses, wall climbing, orienteering, pedal
boats and a visit to the Port of Echuca.
The students are to be congratulated on the way they
represented our school whilst on camp. We look forward
to hearing more reports and stories from camp next
week.
SCHOOL COUNCIL
The next mee!ng of our School Council is on Monday
14th September, beginning at 7.00pm. Finance Com-
mi@ee will meet at 6.30pm.
CHRISTMAS CD
Earlier this year we advised our school community that
our students would be part of an X-Mas CD recording to
raise money for the Bendigo For Homeless Youth project.
Unfortunately, the organisers have advised us that due to
circumstances they are no longer proceeding with this
project in 2015.

HIGH FIVE
I wish to give a high five to Melinda who
ensures that the students’ lunch orders ar-
rive safely at the shop each Monday morn-
ing. Thanks for being a reliable helper with
this Melinda!
BOOK WEEK DRESS UP ACTIVITY is
Books light Up Our World
A reminder that our Book Week Day
is Wednesday 2nd September.
Students are able to come to school
dressed as their favourite book character on this day.
Students and parents may wish to begin planning a
costume for this day.
The grade prep to two class studied a collection of bugs and compared these to worms. Similarities and differences were discussed. After feeding and watering our worm farm, the students did a fun activity that taught them about the right and wrong things that can be given to the worms to digest. The grade 3 to 6 students continued de-veloping their garden business, The Goornong Dirt Facto-ry. We are hoping to have a big weeding day next week and seedlings will go in soon. This week, the planting plan/map was completed, soils analysed, risk identification and reduction was listed, logos drawn, growing notes created and a float for sales was worked out by our accountants. The students have been very enthusiastic about this project and we hope when the time comes, they will have lots of produce to sell.
