Emergency management

At Buninyong, we are committed to ensuring that we are as ready as possible for dealing with any emergencies. We have an Emergency Management Team at both Buninyong and Scotsburn and each team is responsible for the Emergency Management Plan at their campus.

In case of emergency it is vital that all staff and students mobilise quickly and calmly to ensure the safety of all concerned.

There are 2 main emergency drills that we practise with the children. The first is an evacuation drill which may be done in a situation of a fire in a building or something like a gas leak.

The other emergency drill that we practise is a lockdown drill for when staff and students must stay inside the building due to some kind of immediate danger outside, such as a violent storm or a vicious dog in the grounds.

We will be having an evacuation practice drill next week at school. Teachers will be talking to their classes about this upcoming drill, they will discuss with the students the steps that they must take in the event of an emergency and they will reiterate the importance of staying calm and listening to instructions from the teacher.

When the emergency siren sounds it is always accompanied by an announcement that we are having an “Emergency Drill”.

Parents may wish to discuss these things with their children also. Please talk to your children about the need to stay calm and not be scared by these practice drills.

This may also be a great time to talk about safety in your home as well. Talk to your children about your own home evacuation plan and practice it.

Emergencies can happen without warning and it is vital that we are prepared; as the safety of our children and staff is always paramount.

ORGANISING CLASSES FOR 2016

Term 4 is slipping by and next month the process of organising students into classes for next year will begin. If there are significant issues we need to be aware of when allocating your child to a class, please make sure they have been made known to Bernie or Josh by Friday, November 13

soon after to begin sorting children into classes.

It is not our intention to provide parents with the opportunity to select a teacher of choice. We have developed a very strong teaching team and parents can be confident the needs of their child will be met by any member of our team. Developing well-balanced classes is best for everyone and that can be made difficult if there are large numbers of requests – as such, it is important that placement requests be founded on significant reasons and not related to specific teachers. We try to accommodate parent requests with regard to student placements, but you will understand this is not always possible. It is also important when we come to organise classes that we know of students who will not be at our

School in 2016. If your family is moving on, please let us know as soon as possible.


PRE-SCHOOLER PROGRAM Last week was the first of the 4 weeks that our Pre-Schooler Program will run. We have 97 students

enrolled, which is great because that means we will have the vast majority of our preps start next year

feeling very comfortable in the school environment.

If enrolling your child in the program has slipped your mind, it’s not too late. Simply give the ladies in

the office a call to enrol your child for the remaining 3 weeks of the

program.

Once again you have supported our Book Fair with amazing results.

Our total takings were $6212.00. This will allow me to purchase

books from the Fair to a value of $2484.80. I have taken a great

selection and have also ordered others which the children in Grades 3,

4 and 5 picked out.

Thank you also to those parents who assisted with sales and a special thank you to Shallan

Pompe, one of my library monitors, who did an amazing job.

Prep - grade 2 Cross Country On Wednesday 14

th, students in grades prep, 1 and 2 took part in the annual Cross Country event. They

ran a scenic course that took them around the school, through the botanic gardens and back over the finish line in front of a roaring crowd of parents, teachers and students. The weather was almost perfect- warm, but not too hot, with the sun shining throughout the event. A big congratulations to all participants who showed a fan-tastic attitude toward this challenging event, with smiles all around whether they came first or last- simply being a part of the race was reward enough for our active kids.

with marshalling the event- the race couldn’t take place without

you! The grade 6 house leaders who were a tremendous help lead-

ing each race (so participants didn’t get lost), as well as helping with the marshalling and taking photos.

Pre-service teachers Lorinda and Rhian from Fed. Uni. who helped with setting up and running the

event. Wes from Buninyong Garden Supplies for donating a load of crushed rock to fill some dangerous

potholes. Class teachers involved for getting your grades involved and helping us to run the event

smoothly.

Cybersafety Information Session (and BYOD Competition Night)

Back by popular demand, Constable Des (Hudson) will be holding another cybersafety information session for parents with children in grades 3-6 this term.

Des will present the information given at the start of the year and will then be around for 15 minutes afterwards to answer any questions that you may have. Anyone who has spoken to those who attended the first information session, will surely be aware that Des’ presentation is a must see!

While Des is presenting, the eLearning team will hold a BYOD competition for students who are currently in grades 4 and 5 (please bring along their iPads). At the end of the information session, we encourage all parents who have students in grades 4 and 5 to reconnect with their child(ren) and participate in the competitions. There will be prizes to be won on the night and we can’t wait to see all of our great BYOD kids entering the competitions!

*** Please note that we invite all parents of students in grades 3-6 to attend, however, only children in grades 4 and 5 can be involved in the BYOD competitions.

The Buninyong good life festival

On Sunday 25th October Buninyong Primary School will be holding a Cake Stall at the Good Life Festival between 9am-2pm as a means to continue raising funds for the old Police station in our school grounds.

We invite all families, if able, to bake for the stall.

Please ensure all ingredients are listed on the baked goods.

If you could spare an hour or two to work at the stall on the day, your time would be greatly appreciated. Please contact me if you would like to be included on the roster.

SCOTSBURN NEWS

Parent Meeting We have an important parent meeting coming up on Tuesday 27

th October at 3.30pm. We will be discussing the

parent opinion survey results along with preparations for the end of the year. I encourage as many parents as possible to come along (toddlers most welcome).

Scotsburn Paver Fundraiser An invitation for your family to become a permanent fixture at Scotsburn was sent home last week. It would be great to see as many families and businesses supporting this fundraiser, as all money raised will assist with the purchasing and installation of new media technology in our new multi-purpose building.

Buninyong Good Life Festival You should have received a note seeking assistance at the BBQ for the Good Life Festival on Sunday the 25

th October.

This is a great opportunity to raise some money for our students. Please return the form indicating your preferred time to help to your child’s teacher by Thursday morning.

Parent & Staff Opinion Surveys The results of our parent and staff opinion surveys have finally arrived. The results were excellent and reflected the wonderful environment that we have at Scotsburn. We will discuss them in greater detail at our next parent meeting.

Geocaching Event

The Scotsburn campus held a geocaching fundraiser on Saturday with over 40 people attending. Participants enjoyed a morning of non-motorised fun and exercise which was

thoroughly enjoyed by all. The event was both an extension of the students’ classroom learning as well as a fundraiser for their fish tank. A lot of time and effort went into the organization and was ran successfully due to the great support of the students, parents and Scotsburn staff. The Scotsburn senior class are extremely pleased that they have raised enough money to now get the campus fish tank up and running. This event would not have been possible without the tireless efforts of Ms Morris who did a sensational job bringing it all together.

Scotsburn Pre-Schooler Program

Our Pre-Schooler Program commenced on Wednesday last week. Our preps for 2016 had a wonderful time in the classroom, with Mrs Murphy providing lots of fun activities. During this time, the parents of the new preps enjoyed a cup of tea in the old

building and a chance to chat with some of our current parents. Special thanks to Natasha Adam, Naomi Moore, Laura Conroy and Sean White for making themselves available.

Community Helpers Day Last week, the Scotsburn students enjoyed participating in a Community Helpers Day. The students had a visit from Gareth Smith and the Buninyong Fire brigade to learn about fire safety, a life guard to get some great reminders about being safe around the water and also 2 nurses (Sarah Palmer & Naomi Moore) who chatted about the role they play in hospitals and how we can look after ourselves.

Scotsburn Big Breakfast

This week, the Scotsburn students and staff had a Big Breakfast together. We all sat down for

some cereal, fruit, toast and juice. It was lovely outside sitting together with the relaxing music playing in the background. Special thanks to Ms Morris for organising the day and to Kim for all of the shopping.

P-2 Cross Country Last Wednesday the P-2’s visited the Buninyong campus for the Cross Country. The children completed a 2km course around the school. A special thank you to the grade 6 students who also came down to assist and encourage the P-2 students as they ran the course. Thank you also to Laura Conroy for directing the students around the course and the parents who were able to come and watch. It was wonderful to see all of the children participating and doing their best.

Last week, Alice & Mia Lepair competed in the Regional athletics Competition. Both girls gave it their best shot and should be very proud of their efforts.

Claire and Amelia will be having a large section of their hair cut off at our whole school assembly on the 20

th of November to help raise

money for Variety’s Princess Charlotte Alopecia Program. This charity supports children who have a condition that causes hair loss by providing them with human hair wigs. You can donate to this great

Story of Buninyong Rehearsals for the upcoming Grade 4 Story of Buninyong are almost complete. Special thanks to Miranda Donald who has travelled up to Scotsburn preparing the students. We look forward to a wonderful performance this Friday night.

The original Buninyong Police Station built in 1859 which sits on the school grounds is undergoing a major internal and external facelift. To support this renovation, Buninyong Primary School invite you to be a part of its future by purchasing a paver to be engraved with your name and placed at the entry of the building.

The money raised from this sponsorship initiative will be used to install new heating, new flooring and a kitchenette. Once renovations are complete, the space will be used as for a variety of purposes including, lessons for small groups of students, a venue for historical talks from local community members and a cosy community meeting space. It will proudly display many historical images of Buninyong Primary School and surrounds. We thank you for your anticipated support and look forward to reading the names of those who choose to be a permanent fixture at this important community building. WALKING TO AND FROM SCHOOL

AN OPPORTUNITY TO PROVIDE CITY COUNCIL WITH FEEDBACK

Ballarat City Council has put up a survey on the ‘Have Your Say’ section of the Council website, which gives parents an opportunity to describe any road, footpath, speed zone, safety or other barriers which might prevent them encouraging their primary aged children to walk to school. There is only one main question with an option to attach a photo of the area concerned as well. This provides an opportunity to inform Council of barriers and helps prioritise issues of concern.

The survey will be online for 4 weeks until the 6th November.

I’d like to take this opportunity to thank those who chose to contribute in some way to St Paul’s Primary School in Uganda. In total we took over seventy four kilograms of donations which included items such as pens, pencils, permanent markers, rubber gloves, toothbrushes, toothpaste, medicine cups, Band-Aids, bandages and dental equipment.

The monetary donations totalling $5200 went in its entirety towards completing the boy’s latrine and shower block, the purchasing of three hundred chickens, four new bunks for the children to sleep in, a brand new four piece playground for the junior area, some soft sand and a fence to border the

equipment. The funds also allowed six brand new tyres to be purchased for the school truck which is used to get materials into the community and also to transport children and staff.

Your generosity made an enormous difference to this African community and staff and students expressed their gratitude on numerous occasions. I too thank you once again for your generous spirit.
