Overseas Travel One part of our school vision is to “provide opportunities” for our students. We are proud in particular of the overseas travel opportunities that many students benefit from at Waiuku College.

We have two overseas trips away over this holiday period - *China Trip for our Mandarin language students being led by teacher Ms Wendy Kwan *Vietnam Trip for our Te Reo Maori students led by Whaea Piki Jakeman We wish both trips a safe, happy and rewarding experience.

DATES TO REMEMBER

Tom Vanderlaan

Principal Nga mihi mahana kia koutou

Warm greetings to you all

Page 2: DATES TO REMEM ER Sabbatical Acting Principal Mr Ditchburn · 2019. 4. 12. · Sabbatical -Acting Principal Mr Ditchburn I will be away from school during term 2 on sabbatical leave.

Careers We have been awarded a $8,048 Samala Robinson Academy (SRA) Scholarship for one of our students for 2019. This scholarship will be awarded to a student of our choice at our Senior Prizegiving, and will be valid from 2020-2021.

Sports Waka Ama nationals were a big event at Tikitapu in Rotorua with over 40 students taking part and having success with our senior girls placing third in their national final. Well done to all the rangatahi who took part and a big thank you to Shelly & Ricki Minhinnick and Selwyn Herewini for all their work.

Volleyball Nationals in Palmerston North were a big challenge for our senior girls who ended 16th in their division. Well done girls and a big thank you to Hina for his ongoing coaching expertise and Stefanie Belworthy for picking up the management duties so well.

Our Archery and Orienteering teams have also had a successful summer term of competition and I would like to acknowledge Jane Patterson in particular for the growth of our archery squad.

The Clay Shooters continue to perform well and I was proud to watch us take out the school event at the Pukekohe Gun Club recently. Les Clarke and Jo Sands must qualify as our longest serving present coaches and are responsible for our ongoing success in this highly disciplined sport.

Netball is now underway with 10 College teams taking part on opening day last weekend. Pre season rugby games have also started and we look forward to all our winter teams starting competitions next term in Hockey, Soccer and Basketball as well.

RYDA and Road Safety We are planning to hold a RYDA road safety day for Year 12 Students later in term 2. We are constantly looking for ways to keep our young drivers safe and feel that this will be a valuable tool in doing that. Talking with the Police recently we shared our concerns about students taking passengers on restricted licenses and we ask that parents monitor this ongoing problem as well. Restricted License driv-ers are legally accountable for passengers injured in any accidents.

Property – Gym We apologize for the delays to the repair work on the Gym. The rot due to leaky design has turned out to be far worse than thought and now requires consent changes for greater remedial work. Fingers crossed it will all be done by Christmas.

Bee Business Teachers have been given small pots of honey by our student Bee Keeping group. Breeding new Queens is well underway as we seek to create new colonies and hives to provide to local school and landowners. My thanks to Head of Science Mr North for his initiative and support for this project work.

Fundraising Our students gave generously when we held a bright colours mufti day to support our Muslim Community after the Christchurch attacks. We raised $1300 which I presented to the treasurer of the South Auckland Muslim Association when I attended the funeral in Manukau for one of the shooting victims.

A few weeks later we held a gumboots mufti day to support Mike Kings Mental Health Awareness work and raised another $900. Well done Waiuku College students!

Holiday Break I wish all our students a restful and safe time over the autumn holiday break. We look forward to further supporting their growth and learning in Term 2

Nga mihi, Tom Vanderlaan, Principal

PRIMARY INDUSTRIES Level one Primary Industry students visited Rupex Growtech Ltd, a leading supplier of vegetable planting materials to commercial growers in the Auckland region.

They also completed a two-day first aid course run by Actions for Survival. There was excellent discussion around possible scenarios and the actions required in a medical emergency.

TRAVELLERS Waiuku College is delighted to offer the Travellers programme to Year 9 students. Travellers is a small-group programme about life’s journey and how young people can be supported early in their development to embrace the challenges that this journey offers.

All Year 9 students will complete a fully confidential Travellers survey in term 1 and 2 and following this, some students will be offered the opportunity to take part in the programme. The questions included in the survey cover those life events involving change and loss, like changing schools, changing friendships and relationships, loss of someone or something close. These are events that may lead to emotional stress in some young people. In completing the survey students pro-vide Yes/No answers and an indication of the extent to which the event caused them stress. No details of the event are re-quired. The survey helps us identify those young people who have experienced life changes that are challenging and stress-ful. The programme is designed to help them develop the re-sources and skills to manage the challenging situations and daily hassles in life’s journey.

Once identified the students are given the opportunity to join the group if they choose to. Should your son/daughter be invited to take part in Travellers, you will both receive further information about the programme. The group will meet dur-ing school time, with the minimum disruption to students’ academic commitments.

Travellers has been used with considerable success since 2001. Our Principals and Board of Trustees support the programme as part of our school’s ongoing commitment to supporting the mental and emotional wellbeing of our students which, in turn, enhances their learning.

If you have any questions, please contact Tracey Innes, Guidance Counsellor on: 235-8139, ext. 216.

NCEA NEWS Senior students were provided with an NZQA candidate information sheet last week that covered information around payment, special assessment conditions, sitting externals, and university entrance. This, a Te Reo version, and the 2019 Examination timetable can be found at

https://www.nzqa.govt.nz/ncea/entry-into-ncea/

Next term, senior students will be invoiced for their NZQA Fees. The standard fee is $76.70 per student. If the person paying the bill receives a benefit or has a Community Services Card, or they are entitled to a Community Services card, they can apply for Financial Assistance which reduces the fees to $20.00 per student or a maximum of $30.00 per family. Irrespective of your income, if you have two or more children and you would have to pay more than $200.00 in fees, you can also apply for financial assistance. Financial Assistance Application forms will be available next term from the student office.

Any questions, please contact Mrs Everitt

Epro8 Epro8 is an interschool Science and Technology competition where students are given challenges and have to design/create a device to solve the challenges. The winners solve the most amount of challenges in the fastest time. This year Waiuku College Science department took two teams, travelled to Rosehill College, and competed against some of the local and not so local schools. The two teams (235-UKU Girls and 235-UKU Boys) both did a great job and represented Waiuku College with great sportsmanship and teamwork. The Boys came 9th and Girls came 5th. The girls just missed out on the semi-finals by 20pts, however, were later offered a wild card entry as the competition organiser saw potential in the team. Unfortunately the team could not make the semi-final date due to other commitments.

A great effort by all.

Members of the Waiuku College 2019 Epro8 teams were:

Team 235-UKU Girls: Millie Thompson, Brooke Glenny, Aimee Clark and Newrea Yong

Team 235-UKU Boys: Harvey Lochead and Levi Austin

Most schools are currently underway with collecting student baseline data for Well-being. This is through the NZCER Wellbeing@School Tool for Year 5-13. The aim is to complete this survey by Week 5, Term 2. This survey will give the Kāhui Ako baseline trends and patterns, to then look at what best to focus on collectively, with the aim to narrow the direction.

Pukekohe Kāhui Ako hosted a PD session on Designing local curriculum

A number of Kāhui Ako teachers attended an excellent workshop on curriculum design and we will be using some of the tools to assist in Kāhui Ako wide planning. It may also be of use to individual schools in their strategic planning.

Combined Agency meetings up and running

We now have a group formed from various outside agencies that are working together on referrals from our schools to assist families who require support in optimising the educational outcomes for their tamariki. This is facilitated through the Strengthening Families programme under the umbrella of Franklin Family Support.

http://www.strengtheningfamilies.govt.nz/

In Focus school meeting Term 2 (Thursday 2 May) Wine and cheese…..

Coming up on 2 May will be an opportunity to engage professionally with colleagues across the Kāhui Ako. This afternoon will be one of sharing professional voice and perspective around the Kāhui Ako goals and offers an opportunity to connect and network with others.

Within school teachers’ role for assisting primary SENCOs

The principals group has decided to use our last Within school teacher role as a resource in the learning support area of our Kāhui Ako. This role will be selected from the existing pool of experienced SENCO working in our community and create time for them to help schools with resourcing, paperwork, student testing, identification etc.

Another chance to see the Strategic plan for Waiuku Kāhui Ako

I have attached the strategic plan that was co-constructed with the Kāhui Ako principals. This document sets the goals for the next 2 years. These are shared goals that we think are important to our school community and we believe we can achieve more by working together on them.

SPORT ATHLETIC RECORDS SET BY FRANCES GOOD

Our very own Frances Good of Year 13 has had a very busy start to her year. Frances is very talented at long distance running, cross country and Orienteering.

This season Frances has competed in the sprint Series for the Counties Manukau Orienteering Secondary Schools event, placing 1st at four of the six events. She hopes to continue this success and attend the North Island SS Event which is being held in Hawkes Bay in the July Holidays.

At our college Athletics Frances was once again Senior Girls Champion, going on to the Counties Manukau Zone event and then on to the Auckland-wide College Sport Championships.

Katy Boyd set the college record for the 800m back in 1995 with a time of 2.28.60, This year Frances bumped her off her pedestal by setting a new record in a time of 2.21.20, taking the podium for a Gold medal in both the Counties Manukau event and the Auckland Champs. Not stopping there, Frances then entered the 1500m race and set a new a record for this event with a time of 5.00.98. This record has been held since 2012 by Laura Cowling with a time of 5.03.81.

Next up for Frances is the Cross Country season which is week 2 of Term 2, and we look forward to her setting more great times here.

Frances has also signed up for the Waiuku College 1st XI Football Girls team.

SQUASH This year we have started up Squash at College with a mixture of year 9 - 13 students. Students who have participated are learning new skills, keeping fit, and have just recently learnt how to referee and mark games. Next term there will be a school competition for our players and hopefully we will be able to play in Pukekohe and Auckland tournaments this year.

Kelsey Flynn - Teacher in charge of squash

TEAM SAILING

On the 28th and 29th of March, Jack Hodgson, Emily McGregor and Isabel Hodgson went up to Akarana with three other students from Strathallan and Rosehill as a combined school team from Waiuku Yacht Club. They competed at the 2019 Auckland Cup Secondary Schools’ Teams Sailing Champs.

420 yachts, each with teams of three, competing over two days against other secondary schools from Auckland in short 15-minute races, scored first to sixth.

The students enjoyed their day.

If you want to have a go next summer as crew, talk to Jack, Emily or Isabel.

CRICKET This term sees the end of the cricket season for both the girls and boys teams. Both teams were involved in the local Counties secondary schools competition and also the Auckland 1b for the girls. The girls were successful in claiming the Counties competi-tion by beating Pukekohe High School by 54 runs in the final. The girls also competed in the Auckland competition where they won 4 games and lost only 2 games finishing 5th out of 12 teams.

The boys team competed in the annual Gillette Cup competition in which the boys made the final against arch rivals Pukekohe High School, but fell short finishing runners up. In the local round robin competition which is held on Wednesday nights, the boys finished 5th place. Both teams would like to thank Mr Hammersley, Miss Knight and Craig McGregor for their efforts with the girls and Mr Cope with his skills and knowledge with the boys. The next round of competition starts again in term 4.

SPORT

VOLLEYBALL Summer tournament week was a wicked opportunity for our senior girls’ volleyball to head down to the national tourna-ment held in Palmerston North. It was a massive six days for the girls, and they did well to manage with the mixture of early mornings and really late nights. It was an enormous boost for them to be graded into the 3 & 4 division, which was a lift from the division 6 they played in last year.

Moving into this Premier grade meant we played in an extremely well refined competition and it took a few games to get us in the grove. Facing the home of volleyball Bay of Plenty first up was a good start to the tournament, and for the girls to get a taste of the whole week. We finally found our feet in the middle of the week winning a couple of our games against Wellington East and Freyberg High School.

This was a really good experience for the girls as some of the games went to 5 sets (over two hours) and then the girls com-pleted a duty straight after and running the next game, before being allowed a break. They represented Waiuku College well. They ran the games well, kept their spirits high and continued to strive for success each game.

A big mention to, Brie, Mackenzie and Pare who are the senior leaders of the team and helped create a wonderful team culture.

A massive thank you to Hina Ranga for the time, effort and experienced knowledge he has given to these girls through the early morning trainings, and to Stefanie Belworthy the new volleyball coach.

Any junior girls interested in giving volleyball a go please see Miss Belworthy at school, or let Mrs Coe know.

TYLA HACKETT - AUSTRALIA 2019 I’m heading to Australia to ride and groom for Katie Laurie (née McVean). This is an amazing opportunity, as she rode for New Zealand in Show Jumping at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Katie moved to Australia in 2018 and has proven to be very com-petitive.

Being able to travel alongside and learn from Katie is very exciting and I’m sure I will learn lots, and be able to come back and apply the new found knowledge to my horses.

By Tyla Hackett

We wish Tyla all the best in her ventures in Australia. She will come back with a wealth of knowledge, which will only see her going further In her chosen pathway of horse riding.

NETBALL The first Grading Day was held at the Waiuku Netball Centre and we are proud to be registering 10 teams this year. The 2nd Grading day is this Saturday, with a break of a week over the Easter holiday weekend, then we will be playing again the last weekend of the school holidays.

Thank you to all the parents, caregivers and community volunteers who have worked hard in helping me get these teams ready for this year’s competition, and for the wonderful help from all the coaches and mangers for the 2019 season.

We have had fifteen girls attend the Waiuku Netball Centre Umpiring course and they are all about to sit their Junior Practical exam, and I hope that sometime through the year they will be able to do their Practical Badge. I thank them for putting themselves forward for this. Special mention to Mrs Eleanor Kitching, the Waiuku Netball Centre Umpire co-ordinator for giving up her time in coaching these girls.

Below is a photo of all our girls that attended Opening day, we wish them all the best for the 2019 season.

WAKA AMA Congratulations to our Under-19 Senior Girls 6 Waka Ama Team, who recently appeared on the podium taking out 3rd place in the Finals.

Team members are: Natalie Campbell, Waiora Minhinick, Kayleen Pirini, Cheyenne Beukman, Cree Kaukau and Zahntaye Brown-Heather.

A huge effort for such a large competition.

CLAY SHOOTING TEAM TRIUMPHS AGAIN On Thursday 14th March our Claybird Shooting team compet-ed at the Secondary Schools Shoot held in Pukekohe at the Auckland Met. This was hosted by Waiuku College, Pukekohe High School, Kings College and Tuakau College.

A well-run shoot attended by over 100 shooters from around the Auckland and Waikato Regions, where some great scores were helped by the brilliant weather.

Waiuku College has a very young team, with eight new first year shooters joining the squad. They were hoping to start the year off as they finished at the end of last year, on a high at the Nationals in Christchurch.

It was the top team of Matty Groot, Luke Cathcart, Josh Baird, Dylan Burns and Devon Partridge who came out firing, shooting 96/100 in the Single Rise Trophy Event. They were hoping it would be enough to take the Trophy, but Hamilton Boys 1 also posted the same score and after a shoot off, Hamilton Boys walked away with the Trophy.

In the Points Score Event Waiuku proved it wasn’t a one off and once again posted a great score, shooting 288/300, with Matty Groot on 59, Luke Cathcart on 59, Josh Baird on 55, Dylan Burns on 59 and Devon Partridge on 56. This score was the winning score on the day and we took 1st place in the teams, beating Hamilton Boys 1 who finished second with a score of 284 and Hauraki Plains in third on 277 points.

The girls team of Chloe Thompson and Aimee Clarke finished in 2nd place behind the strong Hauraki Plains College Team of the Bond Sisters. Individual placings went from 1st to 10th position for the boys, which saw Matty Groot in 6th place and Luke Cathcart in 8th place for the day. Coaches Les Clarke , Bob Anderson and Mike Tarbitt were very happy with the whole squad, A great start to a new season and hopefully the beginning of a successful year.

Manager Jo Sands wanted to thank the amazing business Community for their wonderful support in sponsorship for the event. We are so proud to be from the Franklin District. She also wants to thank Mrs Judith Coe, Sports Director of Waiuku College, and all the parents and grandparents who are involved and support the team and sport. She is so happy to be involved with such a great bunch.

SPORT

The gloss was taken off the teams’ achievements by the awful events that occurred in Christchurch the following day.

For those who may not understand what we do in our sport, it involves shotgun shooting (not rifles) and clay targets (not hunting). This is an Olympic sport and does not involve the use of weapons such as those used in the Christchurch Tragedy.

It saddens us to see any firearms being used this way in New Zealand and we cannot even begin to comprehend why any-one would ever consider doing this. Our prayers and thoughts are with the people of Christchurch and we stand together with them and our fellow Muslim citizens and community.

Our next shoot is at Thames on 14th April where they hope they can add to their tally and trophy cabinet.

Waiuku College Equestrian SJ/SH/Dressage Event On the 3rd of April 2019, the Waiuku College Equestrian team held their annual Show Jumping/Show Hunter/Dressage event at the Waiuku Pony Club.

96 riders from schools across the Auckland and Waikato region competed in the event, including teams from many of the top schools in the area. The Waiuku College Equestrian Team entered two teams into the event, both of which were extremely successful, with all eight of our riders doing very well in their individual classes. The Waiuku College Equestrian Gold Team – consisting of Faith Jepson on King of Spades (SH), Sarah Fisher on Summer Eclipse (SH), Crystal Hackett on Cracklin’ Rose (SJ), and Imogen Wright on McCartney (SJ) – placed first overall out of the 24 total teams.

Overall, the event was a great success. The event ran very smoothly, and we were lucky enough to have fantastic weather. The Waiuku College Equestrian Team would like to thank all of the parents and staff who helped run the event. We would also like to thank all of the riders who came to compete and all of the students who came down to help on the day. Without the contributions of these people, the event would not have been as successful as it was.
