Where in the World Are We Going to Ski? By: Jean Ballinger, Trips VP

Thanks to everyone who took time to tell us where you wanted to ski this coming season by completing the online survey. The top destinations are the trips you will see on our schedule, with one exception. Big Sky was the #1 destination, but we’re not going there this year as the trip would have been $2000+. Hopefully, next year will be different! High airfares and availability have made this year’s trip planning very challenging, as airfares to smaller towns are especially high. So we’re going to fly to major cities like Denver, where competition is greater and prices are lower. With that in mind, I hope you will support our trips! Our board has decided to sponsor six trips this season – five western and one European. You can find the trip schedule elsewhere in the Boomer.

Believe it or not, we had some difficulty getting trip leaders this season. I received more “no” than “yes” responses and one “if only it was Big Sky”. (See above for why we’re not going to Big Sky.) So with that in mind, I want to give a big shout out to those who agreed to be trip leaders: Priscilla Johnson, Randy Ridgway, Debbie Stubbs, Jackie Sundboom and Dick Surber. Without these volunteers, the club couldn’t function.

Here’s some food for thought: WHAT IF . . . *everybody did what you did? *every member attended with the regularity you do? *every member worked as hard or as little as you do? *every member served on as many projects as you do? *everybody contacted and brought potential members as often as you do? *everybody was as tactful and understanding as you are? *everybody was as thoughtful, considerate and appreciative as you are? *everybody was as friendly and conscientious as you are? *everybody was as dependable, enthusiastic and willing as you are? *everybody had as many, or as few, alibis as you do? *everybody was as loyal as you are? *everybody followed your example? What kind of club would it be?

BIKE WITH INDY SKI CLUB - Ray Battey Great weather and an enthusiastic group of bike riders has made for a solid start to our weekly rides. Leaving Broad Ripple on the Monon we have ridden as far south as Garfield Park on the Indy south side and as far north as Quaker Park at the north end of the Monon. This time of year we of-ten have riders coming out for the first time and they will ride part way, return, and we all meet for beers/lunch in Broad Ripple. Future rides are planned on the Cardinal Greenway, the Pennsy Trail and on the Pleasant Run Trail. Even if it has been a few years, come on out and join us (take you bike in for a check-up first). Hope to see you soon.

UPDATE ON PRISCILLA After weeks in the Burn unit at Eskenazi Hospital, Priscilla Johnson has returned home to continue her recovery from burns received in a cooking accident. In lieu of sending flowers and food, Tom suggests a donation to one of the organizations they are associated with. Tom writes: “Here is the mailing information for donating To The Central Indiana Land Trust. The Lamb/Johnson family became involved with CILTI several years ago in an effort to preserve some of the forests that they owned near Lamb Lake Estates in Trafalgar, 45 minutes South of downtown Indy. This nature preserve, which will contain close to 700 wooded acres when completed in Sep-tember, will be called Glacier’s End. This is where the glaciers stopped and melted, thousands of years ago, forming the deep ravines and hills that Southern Johnson County and Brown County are known for. The preserves have been purchased through contributions from Trusts, Individuals, Heritage (Environmental) Trust License plates, The Nature Conservancy, Audubon Society, Johnson County Foundation, a “bargain sale” by the owners, and a final push by State of Indiana Bicentennial Fund. Funding is still needed to put in trails and upgrade existing trails. Priscilla serves on the Board of Directors of this trust and has been instrumental in pushing this effort over the past five years. SKI VISITS TO WESTERN NORTH AMERICA BOUNCE BACK The ‘El Niño weather system is being credited with a 50% jump in skier visits over the previous exceptionally poor sea-son. The snowpack figures were back up to ‘average’ after the four drought years and according to data from the National Ski Areas Association (NSAA) in the US visits to ski areas in the southwest region (California, Nevada and Arizona) increased by 53.1 percent over the previous year, reaching a total of 7.38 million. Whilst the Pacific Northwest saw a huge 141.5-percent growth to 4.83 million visits. Utah posted their nest stats for a decade. Nationwide however total visits reached 53,925,300, only a 0.6 percent increase over the previous year as this past season it was a bad win-ter for New England so numbers dropped there by nearly a third. Yay! It’s summer! The OTHER great season! Let’s face it, spring is just prepa-ration for summer. It’s too cold much of the time for water sports and too wet… and Spring is even worse here in Montana, where it’s officially known as “Mud Season”. And Fall? Yes, it’s pretty, but it’s really just a lead-in to WIN-TER, the best season of all (This IS a SKI club newsletter)

Like winter, summer brings an influx of “furreners” (i.e. visitors) to Big Sky. Like the feller in this photo…. Folks who know Bryan will think there’s some-thing odd about the photo, but Bry really does like dogs…. He just can’t live with ‘em. And the dogs don’t like it, either.

We’ve already had our big July 4th celebration; over 5000 locals and area visi-tors packed the Town Center park to hear a free concert by a great R&B band, followed by a fantastic fireworks display, especially for a town this size. Of course, our friends all hustled to our house after the concert to watch the sky show from our deck…… aka party central. We chased the last of them out well after midnight.

Hiking has been good this summer…. Lots of springtime wild flowers (lupine, paintbrush, coneflower) will be re-placed soon by the summer flowers, starting at the lower elevations and working up into the mountains. Of course, with spring and then summer we have to watch out for four-legged predators. A grizzly sow and her cub have been reported near here, but I am sure that the red dog in the photo will protect us. When the mooses (meese?) visited last winter she hid in her crate until morning. President Ann’s Corner Welcome to summer! The ski club board has been busy making plans for ongoing summer activities and an exciting 2017 ski season! See the newly-arranged schedule of trips elsewhere in the Boomer.

The first weekend in June, I represented our club at the Ohio Valley Ski Council Summit in Dayton. The OVSC is made up of seventeen Midwestern clubs who share information and resources, and can help each other fill trips if needed. The workshops presented topics on trip leader training, recruit-ment of new members, packing simply, fitness and health, and audit and website ideas. I'll share some of this information next time because I have a more important message for this month.

Since our club has been successfully meeting members needs and expectations for so long, I did-n't discover a "little secret" until I joined the board a year ago. Did you know that there's a core group of people who are doing most of the work for the club, and some who do more than one job? And some who have had the same job for years and would like to hand it off? I have proba-bly been casually asked to volunteer before, but I didn't get that I was really needed. The "little se-cret" is that I was! And another secret I discovered in the process is that it has been an interesting challenge and a real blast! The folks involved are thoughtful, caring, committed and downright fun to work with!

So...I am requesting each one of you to think seriously about getting more involved, maybe start-ing with a committee position. Some of you may have offered before but didn't hear anything back. Here's your second chance to step up. Make sure I get your name and area of interest, and I will get back to you. I guarantee it will expand your ski club experience in a positive way!

Miss your 2016 Member Directory? Nobody complained that they did not receive a ski club directory this year. Creating it is a crummy job, so I didn’t remind anybody…. But… The board has decided to have the Direc-tory sent out in October instead of the Spring. In the Spring we will send out by email a list of all those who joined later than October. So….
