Our Year 12 students are completing their exams this week
and preparing for Valedictory and Graduation next week.
Fees and Textbooks
Please ensure that all fees are finalised as soon as possible.
Fees for term four are now overdue. Year 12 students
should have returned all their textbooks prior to next
Friday’s graduation.
Year 12 References and Exit Statements
Year 12 students’ references and exit statements will be available from the
College from lunchtime on Wednesday 29 November. Students who have
outstanding fees or library books will not be able to receive their reference or
exit statements until these matters are resolved.
Year 12 Students Driving
I remind students of their obligation to remember to drive safety and obey all
road rules when they leave the College next Friday. Local police have indicated
that there will be a strong law enforcement presence next Friday (Graduation
Day) and over coming weeks. High spirits that can accompany significant
moments such as leaving school for the last time, should not play out in bad
behaviour whilst driving vehicles.
Year 11 Exams and Leadership Week
In the last week of school after completion of their exams, Year 11 students will
take part in leadership activities, a significant part of which is the election of
College Leaders for 2018. The week culminates with the Year 11 Semi-Formal
being held at the Windmill Reception Centre. Attendance at the semi-
formal is conditional on satisfactory attendance at all activities in
Leadership Week. That is, students will not be allowed to attend the Semi-
Formal if they do not attend the activities in Leadership Week.
School Counsellor
Applications are invited for the position of full time Counsellor/Guidance
Counsellor working with both St Mary’s School Mackay and Emmanuel Primary
School commencing in January 2018.

Showcase
On Friday 27 October, the College’s annual Showcase Cultural Awards Night was held. It was a great celebration of the
cultural life of the College. Congratulations to all award winners, a listing is published later in the newsletter. Congratulations
to Mrs Sarah Rozekrans, Mr Marcus McConnell, Mr David Gravino, Mr Dean Andric and all staff, volunteers and students for
a great evening.
Read All About It! Triple P’s Latest Parenting Magazine Is Here
Triple P’s latest issue of its Queensland-only parenting magazine – the Tippaper – has just been released! Get great tips for
staying cool, calm and collected during storm season, and for making the most of the summer school holidays. Also see how
positive parenting has transformed the lives of other families. Read it online or pick up a free hard copy from your child health
centre, local PCYC or library, or early childhood centre. Find out more about free Triple P in Queensland at www.triplep-

Parties and Young People
Hosting parties for people who are underage is a high risk activity and I remind parents of the legal obligations and issues that
can surround such events. It is important that any hosts of non-official social events understand they can be held liable in law
for any injury/breaches in criminal law by anyone attending under their supervision. The College disclaims any responsibility
for any non-official functions held. Attached to this newsletter I have included an article that discusses legal implications of
parties especially when there is alcohol present.
I refer families to some excellent publications of the Queensland Police Service which discuss legal implications for young
people and alcohol and drugs, and parties.

Research Application from Mr Aaron Drovandi James Cook University Townsville
A reminder about the research application being completed by Mr Aaron Drovandi from James Cook University Townsville.
A letter was emailed a couple of weeks ago to all parents explaining the purpose of the survey. Mr Drovandi is conducting
research on ‘Student Perceptions of Health Warnings on Cigarette Sticks’. This research project involves the use of a short
online questionnaire and aims to gauge the knowledge and understanding of school-aged students on the dangers associated
with tobacco use and to gather their perceptions on the effectiveness of health warnings on cigarette sticks.
Completing this survey is on a voluntary basis and participation will be completely anonymous, as no identifying
data will be collected and demographical data collected is limited to age, gender, ethnicity and school attended. If
you consent for your child to complete this survey, please pass the following link https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/schoolcigarettes to your child. Participating students will go into the draw to
win one of the $10 Woolworths gift vouchers available.
St Patrick’s Family
Congratulations to Year 11 student Bianca Van Vuren on being selected as a finalist in the Qantas Quest Award and
Year 12 student Brock Thomas as a finalist in the Airways Aviation Aerospace Studies Award. These awards will be
presented and announced at Parliament House on 21 November. Good luck to two deserving young students!
Well done to the students who volunteered to support the Light the Night Leukaemia Foundation fundraiser.
Certificates were presented to these students recently.

Saint Vincent de Paul Appeal
Traditionally, during the advent period, the students and staff of the College support the Saint Vincent de Paul
(SVDP) appeal by donating food to assist people in need. This year, I would like to assist one particular part
of the SVDP work in the Mackay area, the housing program.
Our appeal focuses upon essentials, which include cleaning products, Linen etc. The aim is to provide a
welcome gift for new residence to help create a comfortable home. Last week, we presented our first basket
of essentials to Rayleen Etelaaho (SVDP Housing Program) to pass on to a newly arrived resident of the housing program.
The new resident is a Grandmother whom, the week before was sleeping in the park so that she was not a burden on her
family.
I would encourage you to consider throwing one of these items in your shopping basket each week to donate to the appeal.
Items need:
Sheet sets (Single, Double and Queen size)
Pillows
Blankets
Toiletries (Shampoo, Deodorants, Toothpaste etc.)
Clothes Baskets/pegs
Cleaning Clothes
Bathroom Cleaning Products
Floor Cleaning Products
Remembrance Day
Private Jack Thomas Brennan Jack passed from this life on Christmas Day 1943, whilst a Prison of War (POW) in the Pacific,
during the Second World War. Jack is a past student of the Christian Brothers College (now St Patrick’s College), and a
member of the long honour role of past students whom have served in the armed forces for our country. Jack sat in the
same classrooms as our students do now, most likely played football or cricket at lunchtime, complained about homework
and probably received one or two detentions. It is important to remember people like Jack and to acknowledge the
contributions of the service men and women of our country.
Remembrance day is this Saturday, at 11 o’clock we pause to remember those who sacrificed so much through wars, so that
we have the freedoms we enjoy now. We remember young men and women like Jack. Lest we forget.
But the Advocate the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send
in my name, will teach you everything, and remind you of all
that I have said to you. Peace I leave with you; my peace I
give to you. I do not give to you as the world gives.
Do not let your hearts be troubled,
and do not let them be afraid. (John 14:26-27 NRSV)
Graduation Mass
There will be mixed feelings as we experience the graduation of our senior students next Friday. It is a time that can be filled
with sadness for what we leave behind and joy in anticipation of the future. These young people, while receiving much have
also given much and have helped shape the spirit which is uniquely St Patrick’s. Each year, students speak of the challenges
which their final year has brought: the assignment preparation, the grappling with new concepts, the exams, the unknowing
of all that the future will bring. They also speak of the many joyful moments throughout the year, along with the sense of
fulfilment, the support from family, friends and staff; the new and stronger friendships forged. Some of these significant
milestones for our Year 12 students will be celebrated with their final College Assembly and Graduation Mass. We all look
forward to these celebrations and the opportunity to bid these fine young people farewell. I speak for all staff at St Patrick’s
when I say that we have faith in our Year 12 students that after many years of Catholic Education, they too, have a belief in
God, the goodness of humanity and hope for the
future.
"Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy" (Mt 5:7).

Leadership Week (November 21-24)
In recent weeks, our Year 11 students have been given the opportunity to nominate for College
Leadership positions for 2018. Students who display the values of St Patrick’s, enjoy serving others, are
proactive and who have been actively involved in a variety of College activities, should seriously consider
applying for a leadership role. Students can now nominate for the positions of College Captain, College
Committee Chair (Indigenous, Sport, Cultural, Community Service, Christian Leadership) and College
Board Representatives. Students will be shortlisted based on their accompanying letter attached to their
application and how they have demonstrated leadership qualities throughout the year, as well as outstanding conduct.
Following this process, shortlisted nominees will deliver election speeches for the positions of College Captain and
Committee Chair positions, whereby students will have the opportunity to share how they have contributed and supported
others throughout 2017. The Board Representatives will be selected by the administration team.
During the Year 11 leadership week, thirteen students will be elected to represent the Seniors of 2018, as members of the
Student Representative Council and in doing so, they will become the ‘student voice’ for initiating change and improving
student experiences during 2018. At St Patrick’s we are preparing our students to become leaders in a variety of fields and
endeavours as they transition towards the real world. This is the purpose of our leadership week and other activities that
have occurred throughout the year, including the recent Year 11 camp. Leadership is often hard work, difficult and sacrificial.
Students were reminded that these roles are not about the status, but about the service. To quote John Quincy Adams, ‘If
your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, you are a leader.’
Our 2017 Leadership week program has been carefully planned to truly reflect leadership, so that students have an awareness
of the knowledge and skills required of leaders. It is for this reason that Leadership week is compulsory for all students and
the formal (day) uniform must be worn. Failure to attend will make students ineligible to attend the semi-formal.
This month on SchoolTV - School Transitions
Whether it is starting at a new school, moving up to a higher grade or embarking on a journey through secondary school,
there is no doubt that any school transition is an exciting time for children and parents. It means your children are growing
up.
However, transitioning is an ongoing process. It can continue long after students have entered their new environment and
may encounter difficulties at a number of different stages. These stressors may appear as anxiety and frustration and result
in negative or disruptive behaviours. Such behaviours can become problematic making the transitioning process even more
difficult for children and parents.

Last month on SchoolTV- Exam Jitters
Considering our Year 12 students are currently completing their final exam block and our Year 11’s will be commencing
exams on Friday, it is now a good time to revisit last month’s edition of SchoolTV, which assists parents to find advice on
how to help students cope with exam pressure and how students can work smarter to achieve the results they desire.
Diet, exercise and sleep all play an important part in helping a student balance a busy schedule and study smarter. Keeping
stress levels to a minimum and reducing anxiety can be easily achieved through careful planning and having a supportive
environment.

On Friday 27 October we celebrated our annual Cultural Showcase. With rehearsals and sound checks
all through the day, the night kicked off with much excitement. The Hospitality students served the most
delicious food thanks to the guidance of their teacher, Ms Jodie Zahmel, whilst everyone enjoyed the
musical repertoire from our talented students. The Art exhibition in J3 and J4 was absolutely stunning,
thanks to Mr David Gravino and his talented Art students.
The first act started at 6:30pm and featured the percussion ensemble, stage band, handbell soloist Brianna
Martin, handbells ensemble, film viewings, choir, folk group, dance squad, shake n’ stir drama finalists and

Hospitality Department
In all the years the Hospitality students have been catering for the Arts Showcase and Cultural Awards
Night, this was definitely the biggest by far. Thirty-four different platters of food were showcased and the
student’s creativity and culinary ability was on show.
This was the culminating practical assessment piece for the Year 11 Hospitality students, where they
prepared and presented two platters suitable for a cocktail party. The students made one platter from
‘scratch’ and the other with convenience foods. The emphasis was on garnishing and presentation.
The students mingled with the guests offering their creations and were able to answer any questions on the ingredients
used for those of us who have intolerances to certain ingredients. A variety of vegetarian, gluten and dairy free items were
available. If you weren’t there, maybe lock in the event for next year. You won’t be disappointed. This is a selection of what
you missed.

is pictured being recognised for their success.
Movember
A number of St Patrick’s College teachers are participating this year in Movember. Whilst the event is
a bit of fun, the core goal of the endeavour is to raise awareness of and reduce premature deaths in
men. All funds raised go to the Movember Foundation, which aims to reduce premature deaths in men
in three areas: prostate cancer, testicular cancer and suicide prevention. The foundation uses these
funds to invest in research for prevention of these diseases, as well as to advocate for men’s health.
Their goal is by 2030 to reduce the number of men dying prematurely by 25%.
The St Patrick’s College team includes Simon Korneliussen, Gary Giumelli, Martin Hollis, Mark Casey, Kylie Bowman, Dean
Andric, Marcus McConnell, Susan de Haas, Emma Crognale, Shaun Spada, Erika Brauer, Brendon Brauer and Brian Smith.
If you would like to support the team at St Patrick’s College donations can be
made on the following link: http://moteam.co/st-patrick-s-college-mackay
Alternatively, if you go to the Movember Foundation webpage and then search
“St Patrick’s College, Mackay” you can make a donation. This webpage also
contains information regarding goals of the foundation and how raised funds
are allocated.
The St Patrick’s College Movember team would like to thank you for your
support.
Cutlery- Reef Guardians
St Patrick’s College has recently purchased eco-friendly, biodegradable cutlery,
plates and straws, through the use of grant obtained from North Queensland Bulk
Ports. One of the goals of the Reef Guardians group throughout the year, has
been to reduce the amount of plastic created by the College that could potentially
end up in land fill or our oceans and these materials will significantly help in this
endeavour.
The products are all made of compostable/biodegradable materials including sugar
cane plates, wooden cutlery and paper straws. They are in service at the College
tuckshop, as well as other catered events at the College. St Patrick’s College
would again like to thank North Queensland Bulk Ports for their continued
sponsorship of the Reef Guardians program.
