Today marks a significant day for many Christians worldwide. It is 500 years since Martin Luther reformed the Catholic Church. Why are we celebrating this? Well, we are a Lutheran school and, for me, growing up in the Lutheran Church, I think it is pretty special.
A devout Catholic, Luther’s faith took him in a direction he didn’t expect. It all started on a stormy day in 1505 when Luther was so terrified that he promised God he would become a monk if he survived. Days later, he entered the monastery where his studies of the Bible led him to view the Catholic church in an entirely new light that would transform Christianity in Europe and impact Western civilisation.
You see, people of the time felt they didn’t have a voice. They were constrained by the popes and bishops and salvation was something to which the Church held the key. This is when Luther reacted, bringing forth his grievances about the way Catholics celebrated mass (it was conducted in Latin).
Then there was the idea of sin and what this means when you die. Luther’s main concern was the practice of granting indulgences. This involved the paying of money to have prayers said with the understanding that your sins were then forgiven and you could go straight to heaven. Luther believed that selling indulgences was totally unbiblical.
The story goes that Luther wrote all the things he thought were wrong with the Church and nailed them to the door of his local Catholic church. In the 16th century, church doors were used as notice boards, equivalent to Facebook or Twitter today. Alongside ads for candle-makers and laying hens were Luther’s 95 points (theses). It is the fixing of these points that is being commemorated by the 500-year anniversary today.
Luther had no idea the controversy this would cause. He was fortunate that the emperor didn’t kill him but told him to go to a hiding place and even helped him. When Luther translated the Bible into German, it was a game-changer, helped in part by the evolution of the printing press. This resulted in multiple copies being available in a language people could understand.
What Luther did was HUGE. I know that I am much more comfortable living within rules, not unlike the people of the Catholic Church in 1517. I struggle to live in freedom, however to hear God’s love in the Bible gives me that freedom. God is patient and gracious. God is full of love.
How will I be celebrating the Reformation? By teaching the good news of God’s love to the children in my care. Happy Reformation Day!

the appropriate footwear. For example, sneakers while appropriate when wearing the sports uniform, are not to be worn with the formal uniform.
Any parents who may be unsure about uniform matters, should check with the school’s front office.
Premiers Reading Challenge
Next Tuesday, November 7th, our Teacher Librarian, Margaret Wormald, and parent Jodie Battams will be accompanying our school Captains, Erin Battams and Lucas Cockshell to the annual Premier’s Reading Challenge Reception, hosted by Premier the Hon. Jay Weatherill, which this year is being held at the Adelaide Zoo Function Centre.
This wonderful opportunity given to Erin and Lucas is in acknowledgment, not only of their great leadership as ambassadors for our school, but also as keen readers who have completed the Premier’s Reading Challenge each year throughout their Primary School education at Loxton Lutheran School.
Swimming Lessons
Annual swimming lessons will be held in Week 7 of term, commencing on Monday November 27th and concluding on Friday December 4th. This year, lessons will involve all children from Reception to Year 4. Year 5 and 6 children were involved in an aquatics camp earlier in the year, while the Year 7s had an Aquatics Day at Lake Bonney in Term 1.
Lessons are as follows:–
Year 4 9.30am – 10.15am
Year 2/3 10.20am – 11.05am
Year 1/2 11.10am – 11.55am
Reception 12pm – 12.45pm
Children will travel to and from the pool via the school bus.
Luther Ecumenical Service
Once again, a reminder about the Luther Ecumenical Service to be held in the LIFE Centre Sunday November 5th starting at 10am.
All are invited.
Dear Parents,
Continental
A good friend of mine once said to me, “Out of every crisis comes good.” So it was on Friday night. Just when it seemed that we were faced with a disaster thanks to that horrible squall that tore tents apart and threatened to ruin all the hard work of many, many people, the spirit and goodwill of all present – adults and children – shone at its brightest with everyone pitching in to relocate and setup in the LIFE Centre. That wonderful effort enabled the school to almost match the 2016 result financially – but more than that – it brought a community together and demonstrated all that is good about our school and the wider Loxton community
Congratulations and well done to all – I have never been more proud of our school.
Uniform – Student Delegation
It is sometimes said of the younger generation that ‘they can’t be bothered or just don’t care.’ That notion doesn’t quite fit is this case.
Last week a delegation of Year 7 students arranged to meet with me to discuss several issues that had been raised to our Student Parliament.
At the top of the list was their complaint that a growing number of students appear to be disregarding the school’s uniform dress code by either wearing the wrong form of the uniform (ie formal or sports) on the wrong day, or mixing the two by wearing some of one and some of the other at the same time.
This demonstrated to me that the students DO CARE and secondly that we need to be more vigilant (parents and teachers) in both demanding and policing that the appropriate uniform is worn on the correct days.
So there can be no doubt – Formal uniform days are Wednesday and Friday of each week. Sports uniform days are Monday, Tuesday & Thursday of each week. Mixing of uniforms includes wearing

2018 iPad Ordering Portal
Parents of 2018 Year 3 students and any other parents interested in purchasing an iPad for their child(ren) through the school, are invited to attend a Parent Information Evening on Thursday November 9th starting at 7pm in the school library. Jim Belbin from Office Everything will be explaining the new school iPad online ordering portal for 2018, which will enable the purchasing of iPads directly from the supplier at a very competitive price. Payment options will include payment in full via direct debit or credit card, as well as payment by instalments over 12 months.
Please indicate your intention to attend by registering at the school office.
Wine Orders
As many are aware, an innovation at Friday’s Continental was the wine tasting stall where people could taste a range of quality wines at reasonable prices with the hope they would place orders.
Now that the tasting has been completed we will still be taking orders until Friday November 10th, after which orders will be forwarded to the suppliers for delivery to school prior to Christmas.
Wine may be ordered in any quantities (ie as single bottles, dozens, ½ dozens etc) there is also a mixed dozen featuring all six wines on offer.
If you would still like to place an order, an order
form (complete with tasting notes) is available for downloading from the school website or in hard copy from the front office.
Please feel free to contact the school office if you have any questions.
Car-park Safety
Safety of all people using the school’s carpark remains a concern. While management is currently discussing a range of options to improve the situation, these suggested changes have yet to be evaluated as to their effectiveness.
Until changes are made, all parents are reminded that we expect you to be an example to your children. Please remember to adhere to current policy which prohibits walking behind parked vehicles through the middle of the carpark from the administration building to the visitors’ parking area.
Two zebra crossings have been strategically placed at either end of the car parking area to allow people to safely cross over to the Luther Road side of the carpark and therefore move to your car by walking in front of and not behind it.
You cooperation in this safety matter is very much appreciated.
Missing Stage Lights
At the conclusion of the 2016 End of Year Service I was approached by someone from our school community about borrowing 3 stage lights for a production in which they were involved. The lights were subsequently borrowed. However, although I fully intended to do so, I failed to record who had borrowed the lights. These are still missing, so if you are the person who borrowed them, of if you know where the lights are located, could you contact the school office so they may be returned?
Do have an awesome next two weeks!
Yours in Christ,
Terry Sawade

Dear Parents and Caregivers,
What a fantastic start to the term. It has been so pleasing to see the children excited to return to ELC and get back into the routine after the holidays. We had the role-play corner set up as a post office last
fortnight, which has provided a great opportunity for the children to write letters and make marks on the paper to post to their friends and family. This fortnight we have a home corner set up, as over the last few weeks many children showed an interest in cooking and caring for babies. This play situation provides the children with an opportunity to cooperate with others and negotiate roles and relationships in play episodes and group experiences.
Design a Plate fundraiser – You can draw a picture on a template and bring it into ELC with $26 and your picture will be printed on a plate. Paint can be used, so small children’s handprints can be printed on the plate. These make great Christmas presents or special keepsake gifts. If you would like to purchase a plate, please contact an ELC staff member or Mrs Hondow. Templates are available in the ELC.
Magazine - A school magazine will be available for purchase for $15.00. The ELC has some pages in the magazine. A note will go home for orders this week and must be returned by this Friday.
Sunscreen – Please apply sunscreen to your child before they start their day at ELC and tick the column on the sign in sheet. The UV has been high early in the morning and we would like to ensure the children are protected from the UV and are practising sun safety.
Illness – If your child is unwell, please ensure you keep them home until they are well again. It is recommended that children do not attend the Centre until 24 hours after vomiting, if your child has a cold please keep them home to avoid the illness being transmitted to other children.
There is a table on the Handbook that includes exclusion times for infectious diseases, please contact the ELC if your child contracts an infectious disease.
Social media – All photos provided to parents on Seesaw and portfolios are for private use only and should not be uploaded to the internet on social media sites. Many photos have other children present in them and some parents choose not to have photos of their children on the internet. Please ensure their choice is respected.
We are blessed with so many supportive families at the Early Learning Centre who we need to thank.

Library and Choir News By Margaret Wormald
The Scholastic Book Fair is a reading event that brings to school the books kids want to read. It’s a
selection of engaging and affordable books for every reading level. Please feel free to visit our Book
Fair and be involved in shaping your child’s reading habits and their own personal book collection. It
is being held this week in the School Library.
Special activities:
Thank you to all those who supported the Scholastic Book Fair on Continental Night. It was heartening to see
how excited the children, parents and carers were to see all the new books and novelty pieces. Many used the
opportunity to stock up on Christmas and birthday gifts for the family. A special thank you to Mrs Di Boehm who
helped set up and to Mrs Sandy Miller who helped sell the books on the night.
A Treasure Hunt Competition was held in the School library yesterday at recess time for students in Reception
to Year 3. The first three students to find the lucky spots were given vouchers to spend at the Book Fair.
Today (Tues) at lunch time, students in Years 4 to 7 had their chance to find the lucky spot and win a voucher
to spend at the Book Fair.
Remember, all purchases benefit our school. We hope children, parents and families enjoy many happy hours
reading the books together.
Thank you to the Year 7 students who have selected books from the Book Fair to donate to our school library
as part of the Former Students’ Library.

Reformation Day Ecumenical Service in the LIFE Centre at 10am. The students will be singing two songs at the
service. We ask all students who are participating in the choir, to please be in the LIFE Centre by 9:45am on
Sunday 5th November. It is not necessary for them to wear school uniform. Neat, casual dress is all
that is required.
We look forward to joining with the congregations of other Loxton Churches for this commemoration of 500
years since Luther ‘s actions spurred the beginning of the Reformation of the Christian Church.
