St Michaels Lutheran School Term 4, Week 8 2 December 2020 What a year it has been! There is not one person who has managed to avoid some type of loss during this year. Some have had to say hard goodbyes to loved ones in an environment of restricon, others have lost special events like weddings and milestone birthdays, holiday plans have been cancelled, businesses have been strained and almost everything that we do has had to be creavely and exhausngly re-thought. How many mes have you heard someone say I cant wait for this year to end!(although I do wonder if the miraculously different 2021 that we are hoping for will meet our expectaons). We are all feeling it. COVID exhauson has a way of draining even the strongest of people, aſter a me. We have learned not to plan too far ahead and hold what plans we do have, very lightly. As we prepare for Christmas, the uncertainty connues. Will we be able to have our Christmas Pares? What about that Christmas Eve Service or our tradional family get together on Christmas day? We are again planning for the unknown and the unpredictable. How do we find the joy and happiness of Christmas amidst all of this? I was reading about the apostle Paul this week. He suffered his own form of quarannewhen he was locked in jail in Jerusalemfor 5 years! During his me in prison, Paul wrote a lot of leers to his friends in places like Philippi, Ephesus and Colossae. All of his leers were hope and faith filled, wrien to encourage others from his jail cell. Despite his unjust imprisonment and the horrible condions of a jail in 54 AD, Paul found reasons to praise God and, in that praise, found joy. Take some me to read Ephesians 1:3-14. In these verses Paul found a multude of reasons to praise God. He praised him for spiritual blessings, for his love of us, for sending Jesus to redeem us, for his lavish grace, for his wisdom and understanding, for unifying the world through Christ, and for choosing us! Jesus is the reason for the season and, despite COVID, he remains our reason to have joy this Christmas. Perhaps the restricons of 2020 are a great excuse for you to slow down and really meditate on the awesome giſt that our loving God has given his people; a giſt that began over two thousand years ago and remains with us today, in the salvaon we received. Wishing all of our families a very merry, love filled, Jesus filled, safe and happy Christmas. • St Michael’s Lutheran School Term 4, Week 8 2 December 2020

What a year it has been! There is not one person who has managed to avoid some type of loss during this year. Some have had to say hard goodbyes to loved ones in an environment of restriction, others have lost special events like weddings and milestone birthdays, holiday plans have been cancelled, businesses have been strained and almost everything that we do has had to be creatively and exhaustingly re-thought. How many times have you heard someone

say ‘I can’t wait for this year to end!’ (although I do wonder if the miraculously different 2021 that we are hoping for will meet our expectations). We are all feeling it. COVID exhaustion has a way of draining even the strongest of people, after a time. We have learned not to plan too far ahead and hold what plans we do have, very lightly. As we prepare for Christmas, the uncertainty continues. Will we be able to have our Christmas Parties? What about that Christmas Eve Service or our traditional family get together on Christmas day? We are again planning for the unknown and the unpredictable. How do we find the joy and happiness of Christmas amidst all of this? I was reading about the apostle Paul this week. He suffered his own form of ‘quarantine’ when he was locked in jail in Jerusalem…for 5 years! During his time in prison, Paul wrote a lot of letters to his friends in places like Philippi, Ephesus and Colossae. All of his letters were hope and faith filled, written to encourage others from his jail cell. • Water Fun and Colour Run Day - Tuesday 8th December

This year, we will not be holding our regular Whole School Christmas Lunch in the gym, however, we will be going ahead with the Water fun afternoon and our annual colour run. Children will need to pack a lunch as normal. Children can come to school in Christmas themed clothing, as classes will be involved in many Christmas activities throughout the day. After lunch (2pm) students will have the chance to be involved in a wide variety of water and dry games. Just before 3pm we will begin the colour run, which will follow a course through the school ground. The colour run powder works best on white clothes and so we invite children to bring a white t-shirt to school to use during the colour run. The colour run powder is non-toxic and can be removed with laundering. As children end up very messy, we suggest that, if you are collecting your child from school on that Tuesday, you pack a large garbage bag for your child to wear over their clothes in the car. Towels for the car seat are also a good idea. Alternatively, you are welcome to use the Bukatila changerooms for your child to change before heading home. If your child is travelling by bus, they may wish to pack clean clothes to change into after the colour run. Participation in the colour run is optional. Children who do not want to be involved will be able to watch from a central position. Parents are welcome to attend this event from 2pm, being mindful of COVID safe practices and ensuring that you sign in. We will have a sign in sheet available at the oval. If you have questions about the day, please talk to your child’s teacher.

Graduation and End of Year Service - Wednesday 9th December 9:00 am This year our End of Year Service and SLC Graduation will be held at 9am in Bukatila and will be attended by students and staff only. This week’s announcement that capacity limits would not be raised inside venues means that we are not able to use the Worship Centre. It also means that parents will not be in attendance at this event. We share our student’s disappointment that they will not have their families present for the event, but are grateful that we are allowed to gather as a school on site, and provide an ‘occasion’ for our student’s final day at St Michael’s. We are planning to film the graduation for families to watch later.

P&F Christmas Stall - Friday 4th December The inaugural Christmas Stall will go ahead this Friday 4th December, after school. Parents are encouraged to come along, with their children, and find some special gifts for Christmas. Children will also have the opportunity to shop at the stall on Friday afternoon, if their parents are not able to attend with them after school. COVID Marshalls will be monitoring the event and everyone in attendance are asked to observe appropriate physical distancing and to sign in upon entry to the school grounds. You should have received a gift guide from the P&F via their blog. This will give you a taste of the gifts on offer. Don’t miss out! We would love to see you there!

Celebration of Learning—Knowledge and Skill I think one of the hardest things about teaching is writing reports. They seem such a formal and cold

interaction after one or two years of building and maintaining relationships with students. They reduce

learning to a tick or a short comment where I feel there often should be high fives and parties celebrating

the growth of language development, or an improved ability to solve problems with friends and of academic

achievements shared with others. The Exhibition and our Learning Community Showcases do this, but these

events don’t happen often or demonstrate the specific growth of individual students.

How can we celebrate this learning to the fullest, acknowledging the growth that students display not only in their

knowledge of facts, but the small interactions that show the development of the skills of sharing, trying over and over

(grit), and the ability to come out of the learning pit.

The PYP Approaches to Learning provide us with the scope to acknowledge these skills and focus on them in our

classrooms alongside of the knowledge of the Australian Curriculum. When you receive the reports at the end of this

term look beyond the grades and find the social and emotional growth points with your children. Help them to reflect on

the year and find the successes that will make their future learning even more successful. Use page 6 of your child’s

    report for this.

Bengalee Ryley Neumann and Jacey Bonnici Zebra Charlie Atkinson and Mia Ozolins Prince George Hayden Lien and Isabelle Roberts

We congratulate all of the students who tried out for these positions. You were courageous risk takers and we are proud of you!

  • Lost Property Box is overflowing When you are next in at school please head to the Lost Property Box, located at the entrance to the Library building, and

see if any of the items belong to your family.

The box will be placed in the courtyard on Friday

Any unclaimed uniforms without names will be donated to the P&F at the end of the year for their future second hand

    uniform sales.

Mobile Phones, ‘Phone Watches’ and Messaging at School Technology is moving quickly. There are so many ways that we can communicate and this year, one of the ‘hot’ items on children’s Christmas lists is a smart watch that has cellular connectivity and can work as a telephone. There are a number of these smart watches on the market at the moment.

At St Michael’s we ask that students do not bring mobile phones to school. If a child proves to have a need for a phone, (e.g., To assist their travel to and from school) then the teachers care for the phone during the day and students can retrieve it at the end of each day. All communications from parents to students are to go through the front office, as that helps us to keep track of student’s movements and maintain our duty of care. As our families plan for Christmas gifts, please remember that if your child receives a phone, they will not be able to use it at school and if they receive a ‘watch phone’, they will not be able to wear it at school. We also remind parents to pass messages to their children through the school office and not ‘message’ them directly during school hours.

EXPLORE “We only know a tiny proportion about the complexity of the natural world. Wherever you look, there are things

we don’t know about and don’t understand. There are always new things to find out if you go looking for them”
