Nigel’s Natter

Hello Everyone,

STUDENT LED CONFERENCES As you will now be well aware, Student Led Conferences are fast approaching. We ask that ALL families book a conference time (instructions are included in this Newsletter). The Conferences are part of our Assessment and Reporting program here at KPS and it is important that every child has the opportunity to share their learning. In preparing for and leading the conference, our children are developing their reflective and evaluative thinking skills. When you are at the conference, remember that the focus is on your child’s ability to talk about and reflect on their learning. They may be nervous so give them time to think before jumping in with questions. When you do ask questions, aim for open ended questions. For example, rather than asking “Do you like writing?” – try asking “Can you tell me about what you find easy or challenging in writing?” This question gives the child a far greater opportunity to share their thoughts with you. Included with your child’s Semester 1 Report, there will be a page called ‘How to support your child to reflect on their learning in the ‘Student Led Conference’. ENROLMENTS The number of inquiries for 2018 Foundation enrolments continue to grow. If you have a child due to commence school next year, please visit the school website and click on the enrolment section to see the process. We would appreciate you getting the paperwork completed as soon as possible as this enables us to forward plan for next year. We have an enrolment policy endorsed by DET in place that recognises residential boundary areas. If you have any questions about the enrolment process, please do not hesitate to contact the school office. CLOTHING I have put a reminder about naming all items of clothing in the newsletter for a few weeks now, yet, we are still finding a huge amount of lost items with no names. Having your child’s name clearly written on clothing items means we are able to return lost items to your child. Please take a moment to name all clothing. REPORTS Please take a moment to read the information included in this Newsletter about the changes to the 2017 student reports. There are a number of key changes as a result of the introduction of the Victorian Curriculum. The main changes you will note are:

- No PRIOR scores will be shown as this is the first time we have reported against the new curriculum.

- No A – E rating. Rather, the visual will provide information of how your child is progressing in each area.

- A reduction in the number of curriculum areas reported against. Curriculum is now reported on in BANDS (F – 2, 3 – 4 and 5 – 6). So, many areas are only reported on once every two years.

ATTENDANCE A reminder that EVERY TIME your child is absent from or late to school, we require an explanation to be provided so we can add it to our system. Please write a note in your child’s diary or let their teacher know the reason for absence. You are also welcome to inform the office. Thanks for your support with this.

Kensington Primary School Newsletter OSHC EOI PROCESS The Expression Of Interest Process for the provision of OSHC at KPS has now begun. We have received a number of requests for the EOI documentation from registered service providers. School Council is looking forward to reviewing all submissions against the Key Selection Criteria and Key Performance Indicators outlined in the EIO document. Following the shortlisting process, providers will be asked to make a presentation to School Council. Following the presentations School Council will begin contract negotiations with the preferred service provider. I will continue to keep the community informed as we progress with the process. BUILDING WORKS AND MAINTENANCE UPDATE KPS has been a hive of building activity over the past few weeks. Roof repairs are complete, all internal water damage has been repaired and several classrooms have been repainted. New cabinetry has been installed. At this stage, all works are due to be complete by the end of this week. Furniture removalists will then help us move classrooms back to where they should be. I would like to thank the community and staff for your patience during these works. POST PAD UPGRADE PROJECT As I am sure many of you will have noticed, the pads that cover some of the poles in the playground have seen much better days! These pads were kindly donated to the school, but need to be replaced. One option is to simply paint the poles with bright yellow paint, however, we would prefer to replace the pads as we believe this provides a far greater level of safety for our children. We have had a quote from Safety Pad Solutions to custom make protective pads for playground poles and basketball poles. The pads cost between $300 and $370 each, depending on the diameter and height required. They all have a two year warranty. The total cost, inc GST and instillation with antitheft locks is $8,068. This year, as advertised, the Facilities Sub-Committee have been allocated $100,000 for school improvement projects, most notably ‘Cooling KPS’. We have had lots of suggestions from members of our community about letting people know exactly what fundraising money is being used for. So, the money raised via the entertainment books this year will go directly to the POST PAD PROJECT. I will update the thermometer in the Newsletter each fortnight to let you know how we are going (it will be the total of the entertainment book sales and the go fund me donations). If you would like to make a contribution to get this project off the ground, go to https://www.gofundme.com/kps-post-pad-project Looking forward to seeing you in the yard. Nigel Holloway Principal

The New Victorian Curriculum and Student Semester Reports

The New Victorian Curriculum (http://victoriancurriculum.vcaa.vic.edu.au/)

In 2017, all government school are implementing the new Victorian Curriculum. The Victorian Curriculum Foundation – Yr 10 includes eight learning areas (The Arts, English, Health and Physical Education, The Humanities, Languages, Mathematics, Science, Technologies,) and four capabilities (Critical and Creative Thinking, Ethical, Personal and Social, Intercultural). The capabilities represent the knowledge and skills that are developed and applied across the curriculum. Each curriculum area includes content descriptions explaining what is to be taught and achievement standards describing what students are able to understand and do. The Victorian Curriculum is structured as a continuum across levels of learning achievement not years of schooling. This enables teachers to track student progress along a learning continuum, however, the rate and pace of learning is not fixed or constant. It is recognised that there may be plateaus and even setbacks as different children learn at different rates. Student Reports Student Semester 1 Reports will be sent home on Friday, June 23rd. Teachers will be reporting student progress against the Achievement Standards of the new Victorian Curriculum. In order to do this teachers have been gathering evidence from a variety of formal and informal assessment tasks and learning experiences conducted throughout the semester. They have moderated student work with colleagues, to make on-balance judgements, based on evidence gained, about students’ progress against the Victorian Curriculum achievement standards, and have then place students on the learning continuum. As the Victorian Curriculum is new, student progress from 12months ago will not be indicated on this report. The Department requirements for student reports are outlined below: For English and Mathematics schools report student achievement, twice a year, in Semester 1 and Semester 2. For Science schools report student achievement, at least once a year, commencing in Year 3 or earlier if this is part of the teaching and learning program. For Physical Education schools report student achievement, twice a year, against the achievement standards. For all other Learning Areas schools report student achievement whenever it is taught within the two year band of schooling, in accordance with the whole-school teaching and learning plan.

Learning Snapshots

Foundation Learning Snapshot Inquiry The Foundation classrooms, or should that be ‘Science Labs’, have been home to many experiments over the past two weeks. Students have observed changes in materials when mixing them with other things. Some classes investigated dye and others made playdough. Science can certainly be messy! Reading Foundation students have continued to develop their bank of decoding strategies. We looked at (or listened to) “Hearing Hare” to identify when something doesn’t sound right. Following this, we practised being a “Fix it Max” - that is, if something isn’t right, “Fix It Max” will see to it! We also continued our investigations into comprehension strategies- namely: wondering and predicting, making connections and retelling. Writing Foundation students have been using the above comprehension strategies to respond to texts. In connection with the Bounce Back program, students have also been identifying characters’ feelings in texts and relating them to their own and others’ feelings. Maths Count, count, count! We are becoming experts in numbers to 10, learning them inside out and back to front! We have also been adding numbers together and will soon move onto subtraction. Students have continued to build their knowledge of problem solving strategies, with particular focus on recording an accurate diagram of the model created.

Page 7: DATE TIME EVENT - kensingtonps.vic.edu.au

Kensington Primary School Newsletter Year 1-2A (Andrew, Hannah, Rhyl) Learning Snapshot Inquiry The Show and Tell student presentations have been very successful and many students have put in a lot of effort. The emphasis now is on student-led investigations as we approach the end of the unit of work. They are choosing an aspect of the Big Idea that interests them, for example, the seasons. Then they are conducting research and deciding how to format their information, for example, with a Power-Point presentation. Reading Students have been making comparisons between nonfiction and fiction texts. This saw students using graphic organisers such as Venn Diagrams to show their understanding of the different features and structures of the different text types. We’ve also been looking at the sounds letters can make when they work together (tri-graphs & digraphs). Writing Students have continued to explore narrative writing. They used a narrative time line or graph to plan a creative piece and then write from the plan. Students have also been writing their own reflections from the semester in preparation for the student-led conferences. We have also been looking at the oo sound as in book and would. Maths Students have been deepening their understanding of place value by representing 100s, 10s, 1s using concrete objects such as bundling sticks. They used their reasoning and knowledge of number to explain how to make numbers. When working with time students have been extending their knowledge to half past and making connections between analogue and digital clocks. Year 1-2B (Rach, Liz, Luba) Learning Snapshot Inquiry Students investigated the different phases of the moon and recreated them using Oreos. They made sundials and discussed different ways they could tell the time of day by the different angles that shadows make. Students began discussing different landscapes that they will make in order to see the effects different weather patterns can create. Reading Students continued to practise their expression and fluency through reader's theatre, and continued to provide warm and cool feedback to each other. Students investigated the different ways texts are structured such as comparing and contrasting, cause and effect and problem and solution. Writing Students continued to work on their information reports and they are looking great! They have worked on developing skills in independent research, collecting facts and organising facts under subheadings. Students began to plan narratives using a graphic organiser to assist them in organising their ideas.

Page 8: DATE TIME EVENT - kensingtonps.vic.edu.au

Kensington Primary School Newsletter Maths Students have investigated the equal symbol and what it means. They have used their understanding of addition and subtraction to find the missing parts of an equation. Students worked on developing their understanding of doubles facts and strategies they can use to assist their working out.

PLEASE NOTE ALL STUDENTS IN 1-2 R, L, X AND B WILL BE TESTING THEIR DIORAMAS ON FRIDAY 30TH JUNE FROM 9AM-11:00AM IN THE GATHERING SPACE. PARENTS ARE MORE THAN WELCOME TO COME

AND JOIN IN! Year 3 Learning Snapshot In Inquiry, Writing and Reading, students presented their group posters on the different phylum (mammals, amphibians, fish, birds, reptiles) and some classes also looked at the invertebrates. 3K presented theirs at assembly. Last week, students worked on their individual animal projects. These will be due at the end of week 10. Skills involved in these projects will vary, however all students have worked on putting things into their own words and using key search terms when researching. In Mathematics, students worked to consolidate addition. Focus groups based on pre-concept testing included:

Addition strategies for adding multiple single digits such as make ten, doubles, near tens, near doubles.

Vertical algorithm without renaming - with a focus on to 3 digits. Vertical algorithm with renaming - with a focus on to 3 digits. Worded problem solving.

Studies also included mapping and working with tangrams to reinforce 2D shape, visualising, flip, slide, turn and rotations. Students have used a goal setting template and have been encouraged to check in with their goals weekly. Year 4 Learning Snapshot In Reading In reading, the year 4s have been focussing on the Compare and Contrast strategy. This required students to identify subtle/obvious differences or unexpected similarities between two subjects. By analysing pairs of ideas, the Compare & Contrast strategy strengthened students' ability to remember key content. In writing In writing, students have been working on their self reflections. This writing has allowed them to reflect on their strengths and the learning goals that they have been working on in semester 1. In Maths During Numeracy students continued to refine their subtraction strategies (in Number), by solving equations using vertical algorithms and applying this strategy to worded problems. We’ve also been looking at Statistics and Probability. They have been experimenting with the use of Excel to make different types of graphs including line, bar and pie from different data, including data collected during science experiments.

Page 9: DATE TIME EVENT - kensingtonps.vic.edu.au

Kensington Primary School Newsletter In Inquiry The year 4s were visited by Hands on Science, who supported the students to conduct experiments related to heat and energy. The students used a variety of equipment to observe the transfer of heat and energy from one material to another. They explored the concepts of conduction, convection and radiation. 4N and 4J present some ideas from our Inquiry in their assembly items. Year 5 Learning Snapshot During these last couple of weeks the kids have been showing their Personal Learning Skills by following their own inquiry using the 5E model. They have been asking questions, identifying prior knowledge, finding images and videos of “Sudden Geological Events” and “Extreme Weather Conditions” engage in these awe inspiring events. If you’ve been hearing “Phwoaaaarr” or “Wooooaaaahhh”, now you know why. In Maths we have been exploring the inverse relationship between addition/subtraction and multiplication/division. We have been balancing equations and matching algorithms to worded problems. In Reading & Viewing we have been focusing in on the “Viewing” as we look at different forms of digital media, how they present information and the techniques they use to engage. In Writing, workshops have continued as we tell stories using Comics, Picture Storybooks and Scripts/Films. There has been a myriad of collaborating, drawing, writing, formatting, making music, building props, creating characters. All with the purpose of telling a good story! Year 6 Learning Snapshot In Reading and Viewing, Year 6s have been working on developing their independence in running literature circle discussions. They have been focusing particularly on asking questions which generate interesting group discussion as well as seeking evidence from shared texts to support their thoughts about characters and events. The Year 6s viewed a short film about responsible online behaviour and discussed how the characters handled issues that arose in their digital word and how this impacted upon their “real world” In Writing, students continued their focus on choosing the most useful spelling strategies to learn different kinds of words and challenging themselves to prove that they are improving their spelling accuracy by adding photographic evidence to our class goal-tracking spreadsheets. Students have been highly engaged in their battery-powered projects, and have been developing their specific, scientific vocabulary (e.g. voltage, circuit, conductor) to explain how their projects work. This vocabulary will be applied when students commence writing their explanations of how their projects work. In Maths, students have collated their sleep, device-use and reaction time data and some students have begun creating digital graphs using portions of the data. Students have also been consolidating their understanding about recording the results of chance experiments systematically and representing these results as equivalent fractions and percentages.

Amanda’s Art Room

As the end of Term 2 fast approaches Grade 1/2 students have been very busy finishing off their 3D art

work. This year we have been focusing on portrait. After studying Picasso’s artwork in term 1, students

produced some very successful painted portraits in different styles, including cubism. This term they have

been building on the skills and techniques of working with clay, to create some amazing clay masks

representing an emotion, influenced by the African tradition of ceremonial mask making. The colour

palette was limited to 3 colours but students found a way to adapt that to their taste. Here are some

pictures of the process and the finished product.

Thankyou, thankyou, thankyou to the wonderful Mums who have helped in the Art room each week. Kath Webb

(Olive 1-2D), Fiona Harbridge (Liam 1-2 A) and Sarah Butler (Jasper 1-2X). Your help is invaluable!!!
