PRESIDENT PONDERS

The President Goes Apologetic An easy thing to begin with – forget the “the” – but what is the relevance of the rest in the above title? July and August have been very busy personally with daughter Rosie’s Graduation and move back home (how come she came back with 3 times more stuff than she went with), Scout Camp, and writing 14 citations for Awards within Scouting. But back on track – I think. I have to say I am still recovering from the wonderful attendance at the In and Out Party and catching up on putting accounts data onto the Charity Commission website. Ken Deller has done a fantastic job in putting together speakers for most of our meetings and these should be detailed on the back page. Other people have also submitted ideas so at our meeting on 5th September at our new venue at Dulwich and Sydenham Golf Club we need to discuss what else to fit in. On that track, in terms of events, the free concert by Lewisham Concert band at the Café in Dulwich Park on 10th September is easy (see page 9). So that would just be turn up with a chair – but maybe on the 5th confirm what you are bringing for the picnic. I also suggested Macca – The Concert at The Churchill Theatre, in Bromley, on Monday 25th September – Tickets for which are £20ish. I was going to Chelmsford to watch the cricket but can put that off – if enough people are interested – unless Yorkshire are winning! As to further in the future then we already have quite of a lot of financial commitments for previously agreed events and support. I think we need to bring them into play before deciding on any-thing else – as there are only so many balls we can juggle at any one time.

PRESIDENT PONDERS (contd) We do have a number of fund (and fun) raising events coming up

starting with the Race Night on Saturday the 7th October at the

23rd Camberwell Scouts opposite St Giles in Camberwell, then

the District Governor’s visit on 17th October and the Quiz Night

at Virgo Fidelis on the 10th November. And that’s without the

possibility of visit to The Dulwich Players on 27th October.

We mustn’t forget the Conference at Stratford-on-Avon from 20th-22nd October. Honestly, Conference is fun – and it gives you a chance to meet lots of people and discover interests you did not know you had. The Conference hotel is fully booked now but there are other good hotels nearby and you can still join everyone else for the evening dinners and entertainment. I think the one thing I might have realised already is that I need a bigger diary, and a personal secretary. Thank you all for your help and support so far. Philip

About The Lewisham Concert Band

The band was founded in 1967 and conducted

for many years by the late Joseph Proctor.

The Lewisham Concert Band soon found fame for its numerous

BBC Radio 2 broadcasts during the '70s and '80s on Friday Night

is Music Night and Listen to the Band. Today, under the musical

direction of John Hargreaves, it is still one of London's top wind

bands and comprises both professional and amateur musicians.

Congratulations

And Bon Voyage

Past President and Friend of the Club, Jason, is moving to Wolverhampton with his wife Jo and their daughter, Shirley, Adrian and Roy went to their ‘Farewell to the City’ BBQ at the end of July. The weather could have been better but with the help of a couple of gazebos for shelter it was a very pleasant after-noon. Good luck Jason - and don’t forget to find a Rotary Club to get involved with.

A second grandchild for Adrian, Callie Viola Ruby was born on July 15th, weighing in at 8lb 8oz. Apparently the name Callie comes from the Greek and means Most Beautiful - Mum, Dad, big brother and the rest of the family agree! Ruby was chosen by big brother Struan after Mum and Dad said no to his suggestion of TV.

A bumper month for birthdays

to

HelenWates, August 6th, Sylvia Muxworthy, August 8th,

Adrian Faiers, August 15th, Roy Ashby, August 26th,

Sam Woodlock, August 28th and Barbara Deller, August 30th.

If you are born in August, your birthstone is peridot, one of the oldest gemstones. It is sometimes referred to as 'the poor man's emerald' or as 'chrysolite', a word derived from the Greek word 'goldstone'. It is only found in green, although the shade may vary from light yellowish to dark brownish.

The flower for people born in August is gladiolus, which is also known by the common name, sword lily (although it isn’t related to the lily family). The term gladiolus is coined from the Latin word for sword, gladius - the elongated, green foliage resembles the shape of a sword.

In addition to gladiolus, poppy is often used as a birth flower for the same month.

Regarding the language of flowers, ‘gladiolus’ stands for strength of character, honour and faithfulness, while ‘poppy’ symbolizes oblivion and imagination.

IN and OUT PARTY

Entertainment was provided by the Nunhead Community Choir,

Immediate Past President Shirley handed over to President Philip at the In and Out Party on July 5th at the Dulwich and Sydenham Hill Golf Club. The event was attended by members of the Club with family and friends as well as Rotarians from other London clubs.

And Sam stepped into the role of President Elect. Unfortunately, Adrian wasn’t able to attend, so Shirley was charged with the responsibility of looking after the Treasurer’s collar for him.
