Principal’s Report— Mr J Feeney
This is the last
newsletter of Semester 1, and
so much has happened! I’d like
to thank all the staff for their
efforts (and people have been
working very hard for our
children!) over the last two terms.
And a big thank-you to our parents and
students as well. Our attendance figures last
year were good, and this year they’re even
better! We are closer than ever to our 95%
target! Currently, our attendance is 94.2%,
which is a huge improvement on our 2016
Semester 1 attendance of 93%. These figures
are important, not because of our set target,
but because of what it represents; children
spending more time in class, which is going to
mean more progress in their learning. Well
done, parents, carers and students! We’ve
only got one more week to go, so let’s make
sure our attendance stays high—every day
counts, after all!
Not all learning happens in the classroom,
of course. I’d like to thank Mrs Single and all
the staff members who were responsible for
the organisation and smooth running of our
Athletics Carnival last week. A big shout out
to Western Suburbs Leagues Club for hosting
us on Friday. Space at our own school is tight
for such an event, even without the fences,
and being able to use their facilities at no cost
to us made a big contribution to the success of
the day. A lot of work goes into such an event,
so I’d like to let everyone involved know how
much I appreciate their efforts.
Speaking of fences, you’ll have noticed
that more fences sprung up last week. They’re
now incorporating our Admin Block into the
building works, but it will still be accessible
for the rest of the term. The builders are
planning to complete most of the work during
the holidays, so we should be able to continue
to use our Admin Block after the break. We
expect the work on A and B Blocks to continue
until mid-August, at which point they will begin
working on C and K Blocks. That’s the current
plan, but, well, it is a building project, so …
Next term we will be launching a school-
wide positive behaviour management
approach to sit along-side our current
Responsible Behaviour Plan. We’d like to be
able to reward those children who do the right
thing all the time, and to hopefully encourage
others to do the same.
And while our behaviour at Walkerston SS
is good, we will be altering our detentions
procedure slightly to try and improve
communication between school and home,
and to reduce the number of times the same
children get detentions. From next term, you
will no longer receive the ’think sheet’ which
students complete during detention, but will
receive an email on Friday if your child has
received any detentions.
At the end of this week, you’ll be receiving
your child’s end of semester report. The
purpose of these reports is to keep you
informed about your child’s learning and
progress. At some point next term, I would
like to receive some feedback from parents
about the reports, to see what you think about
our current reports, and to see if we could
make any improvements. I have a few ideas
I’d like to discuss with you, and will set a date
to discuss this with as many parents as would
like to attend, so watch this space!
Finally, I’d like once again to congratulate
everyone in our community for such a
successful semester, and encourage everyone
to have a great holiday before we do it all
again next term!

How Can You Help? We are always looking for support for Breakfast Club as well as Chaplains in the Pioneer Valley. You can donate supplies (fruit, vegemite, cream cheese, jams, bread and butter) to Breaky Club or put some money into the donation tin at the office. If you have a business and would like to put one of our donation tins on the counter, please let me know.
Chaplaincy Dinner O’Sheas Hotel have kindly offered to host our appeal dinner. Numbers are limited to 50. Local businesses are invited to sponsor a table in exchange for advertising on the night and in school newsletters. We are still looking for prizes for the quizzes, games and auctions we will be running on the night. These can be left at the office or Breaky Club.
Chappy Stall at Troppo Markets Than you to all who visited us on Sunday. We will be at the Troppo Markets again in August.

Musical Update We will be having our first run of the musical next Friday 23rd June. Mr Feeney has allowed us to use some class time to have a big rehearsal before the holidays. This is very exciting, if you are going away can you please let Miss Kay know as this will also be a staging rehearsal to work out final spots in dances.
Wanted We are hoping to borrow some of the sets we need for the musical. Does anyone have 3 wooden bar stools we could borrow? If so please let Miss Kay know.
Is anyone able to assist with welding or working with steel frames. Please let Miss Kay know. We wish to make a few more pieces of stage and Miss Kay needs some advice and assistance.
Band There is no instrumental next week due to instrumental camp. Congratulations to Teneale White for being accepted on this camp. We hope you have a wonderful time.

We would like to say a big thankyou to Rebecca and Charlie from Bunnings Warehouse for helping grade 56A and 6A plant vegetables and fruit in our garden. Bunnings supplied us with seedlings and watering cans and then assisted us with planting the seedlings. The garden is flourishing. Through their support Rebecca and Charlie have helped us to understand how gardening works. We hope that next year Rebecca and Charlie will revisit our school and help the following grade sixes design a special area. Written by Alyssa Germanotta

Next Wednesday, Walkerston State School has nominated their junior and senior netball team into the Mackay District Netball Gala Day. We wish them all the best and a special thanks goes to Mrs Germanotta who has been working really hard with these girls in preparation for this day.
Next term will see the Senior girls off to Rockhampton for the Regional Shield Competition. Locally both teams will be gearing up for the Pioneer Valley Queen of the Cup Competition which will be held over 4 weeks next term after school. Keep up the good work girls.
Pioneer Valley Athletics is scheduled for the second week of school next term with the Mackay District Athletics Trials for the 28th July in week 3.
There are only a handful of sports left for trials for the rest of the year so keep an eye out for these in the coming newsletters.
A reminder to please get your money ($6) and permission note in for the Life Education Van Visit, which is the first week next term. It is a fantastic health program that compliments the great health programs that our school implements across the whole school.
Remember to stay active and have fun over the holidays.
