Twenty-four students from Years 2 to 7 have registered for one or more of the subjects in the 2014 Internaonal Compeons and Assessments for Schools (ICAS) tests. The sing dates for the tests will be held during Terms 2 and 3. They involve Computer Skills, Science, Wring, Spelling, English, and Mathemacs. Our students performed very well last year with Lavieen Uthayakumar awarded a gold medal as he was the top achiever in his subject (Science) in his year level in Queensland. We wish this year’s ICAS parcipants the best of luck and to have fun during the preparaon. Every day counts; every minute counts As we reach the end of Term 1, all parents and carers are reminded of the importance of sending children to school on me, every day. Being at school every day counts - one day absent each week quickly adds up to two months of missed schooling in a year. One hour late each day rapidly adds up to one school day absent. Unless your child is ill, it is expected that your child will be at school learning every day of the school year. Holidays, shopping and pares are not accepted as excuses for absence by Educaon Queensland. More informaon on the importance of regular school aendance is available at hp://educaon.qld.gov.au/ everydaycounts/index.html Encourage your child to learn by showing the importance of books and reading. A simple way is to create a place where s/he can store books. You can also encourage your child to borrow books from the school library, allowing you to spark interest in reading during school holidays. If you are not sure where to start looking for books that appeal to your child, ask the community librarian or your child’s teacher. Encourage the whole family to join the community library. Libraries usually sponsor reading events and clubs for children, offering a great way for your child to enjoy reading with her friends. Allow your child to choose his/her own books. Some books will be too hard for your child to read alone. If s/ he needs help with more than five words on the page, this is an ideal book for you to read to your child. Children learn a lot about reading by being read to, and this will help them see that you are interested in reading, too. Allow your child to experience the pleasure of choosing books. Don’t worry if s/he wants to read the same book more than once. Just as a musician enjoys playing the same piece of music many mes, so a young reader can get something more from a book each me s/he reads it. Rhyming books help your child pay aenon to the sounds of words. Books with repeated words and phrases help your child learn about the sounds of language and paerns in words. KEEP A WATCH ON OUR SCHOOL THESE HOLIDAYS

With the holidays fast approaching, we need you to look out for after-hours crime in our school. If you see anything suspicious, please call School Watch on 13 17 88.

The School Watch program is a partnership between the Department of Education, Training and Employment, the Queensland Police Service and the State Government Protective Security Service. It aims to reduce vandalism, theft and arson in Queensland schools.

If you do see something suspicious, please don’t attempt to intervene. Call the School Watch number and let the local police or State Government Protective Security Service deal with the matter. Keep the number handy—13 17 88—and let’s work together to help create a safer school community.
