eason’s Greetings and Happy Holidays!
May the spirit of the season bring peace and
happiness to all of our Warren families! We are
so fortunate to be a part of a community that celebrates
and values many different cultures and customs.
It was wonderful to see so many parents, guardians, and
grandparents during American Education Week and
during parent conferences. We are very appreciative that
the PTA provided refreshments every morning for
visiting parents and for our Grandparents’ Breakfast on
Friday. Now that conferences have been held and report
cards distributed, this is a great time to set goals and
focus efforts for this second marking period.
The weather has turned colder, so it is important to
remind all families to listen to the news each morning to
learn whether school is opening on time. Most television
news programs run information along the bottom of the
television screen throughout the broadcast. You may call
410-887-5555 for information or check the BCPS website
(www.bcps.org). If you have not yet registered, please
consider enrolling in the School’s Out Alert system. You
can go to their website (www.schoolsout.com) and
receive free email notifications anytime there is an
unexpected change in the Baltimore County Public
School System schedule. Or, download the free app
“BCPS Now” to be informed of the latest operating status
of schools in Baltimore County. It is important that we
keep the school phone lines open for communication, so
please do not call school. This is also a good time to
review procedures with your child in case schools close
early.
This is a very busy time of year, but I hope you are able
to enjoy the spirit of the season.

Principal
Inclement Weather Policies
e ask that parents review the following
information in the event of inclement
weather.
All schools - closed for the Entire Day In the event of bad weather and very hazardous road
conditions throughout the county, all schools may be
closed for the entire day. Every effort will be made to
have such an announcement given over the radio and
television, Twitter, Facebook and the BCPS phone app by
5:30 am. (If on an inclement morning no announcement
is made over local stations or social media, it is to be
assumed that schools will be open as usual.)
All Schools – Late Opening When weather conditions are such that it appears
extremely hazardous to operate schools at the regular
early morning hours but that traveling conditions will
improve later in the morning, the opening of schools
may be delayed one or two hours. In addition to
delaying bus schedules, it may be necessary to
temporarily alter certain bus routes. If school opens
later than usual, please make sure that your child does
not arrive before the announced opening time. We are
unable to provide supervision prior to 15 minutes before
the adjusted starting time.
One-Hour Delayed Opening Student Arrival: Students in Grades PreK thru 5 should
arrive at school one hour later than normal. Buses will
run their regular routes one-hour later than normal.
Warren Elementary arrival time when
one hour late is 9:30 am.
Two-Hour Delayed Opening Student Arrival: Students in Grades KG thru 5 should
arrive at school two hours later than normal. AM PreK
students will not have school when there is a 2 hour
delay. Buses will run their regular routes two hours later
than normal.
Warren Elementary arrival time when
two hours later is 10:30 am.
Schools-Early Closings
When inclement weather develops throughout the
county while pupils are in school, it may be advisable to
close all schools early. In this event parents will be
notified by radio and television announcements, Twitter,
Facebook or the BCPS phone app.
In the event that only Warren Elementary is closed due
to some unforeseen condition that warrants an early
closing, we will refer to the Student Emergency
Information form to contact parents via a Connect Ed
phone call and/or e-mail.
Please make sure you have provided us with the most
updated information.
S
W
Be sure your child knows what to do and where to go if
schools close early or opens late.

Character Trait of the Month – Compassion
ompassion Counts
It’s the time of year when most people think about
giving to others, and many of us are aware of people who
are less fortunate and in need. Our own students, led by
the Student Leadership team, collected canned and non-
perishable food items last month to go to needy families
in Maryland. Through our Outreach Committee we
distributed 12 Thanksgiving baskets to families in our
community. As a result, it is ideal to have ‘Compassion’
as our value of the month for December.
We define ‘Compassion’ as caring for the needs of others.
Through stories, DVD presentations, and cooperative
classroom games, teachers and support staff will be
emphasizing the value of compassion, modeling it and
encouraging our students to demonstrate this character
trait. At home you can encourage your child to be
compassionate by pointing out that there are those who
are not as fortunate as we are. And then you can involve
them in any charitable acts of giving that you may do
around the holiday season. Keep in mind that giving of
your time to help Grandma clean and decorate for the
holidays is sometimes even better than monetary
donations.
Thank you as always for your support of our programs at
Warren Elementary. I am excited to be working on and
helping to implement our Character Education Program.
Look for more values of the month to come…
Thank you very much,
Laura Sherline, School Counselor
And the Student Leadership Team

Elementary students participated in a belated
Veteran’s Day Assembly to honor the men and
women from the armed forces who have protected our
country so valiantly throughout the years. At our
assembly, we showed our respect for our veterans by
flying American flags, wearing red, white, and blue, and

Veterans’ acrostic salute. Our Warren teachers and
students are extremely proud of our Warren family

¡Hola estudiantes, familias y amigos de Warren!
¡Buenos días! Es invierno y hace frío .
My name is Señora Solakian, and I am your child’s 5th grade Spanish teacher. The students
are starting their second “mission”. Each unit ends with a “mission” which is a project allowing
students to apply what they have learned. Together the 4 missions form a year-long project.
Grade 5 students will be creating their dream school. The mission must be completed in
complete sentences IN SPANISH. All directions are in their cuaderno (notebook), which stays at
school. There are also websites for references they can use as well as reviewing their notes.
There are a lot of ways you can help your child at home to be as successful as possible
throughout the year and even into next year.
* Ask each week (on their Spanish class day) what they learned in class.
* Ask what they are working on in Middlebury and ask them to show you. (It’s self-paced.)
* Get some Spanish books out of the library.
* Remind your child to ACTIVELY PARTICIPATE in class at all times. (This includes
repeating the words/phrases, acting out the vocabulary, and following directions.)
Hasta pronto, Señora Solakian
Here are the vocabulary concepts that we are learning
in the 2nd quarter:
