Perinatal Care Awareness in CALD Communities ForumS P E A K E R S

Dr Olayide Ogunsiji

RN, PhD; Lecturer, School of Nursing and Midwifery, University of Western Sydney

Dr Olayide Ogunsiji is currently a lecturer at University of Western Sydney, Australia. She has 12 years teaching experience locally and overseas and her current responsibilities include teaching undergraduate and postgraduate students. She is a registered nurse and has worked in a number of clinical areas in Australia.

Dr Olayide holds a Bachelor and Masters Degree in Sociology and has a wide range of knowledge on cultural issues that impact health. She is currentlyworking on community based project aimed at increasing breast cancerawareness and screening among African and Chinese women in Australia, a project funded by the Cancer Institute NSW. She is the President of Nigerian Association NSW and founder of African Women’s Health and SupportOrganisation (AWHASO), a not-for-profit support group for women’s health issues. Olayide has publications in referred and peer-reviewed journals and has presented in local, national and international conferences.

Dr Bee Hong Lo is a developmental physician of Parramatta Early Childhood assessment team, Westmead Children’s Hospital, a VMO at Allowah Children’s Hospital for disabled children Sydney, member of the Chapter of Paediatrics & Child Health of RACP, board member of Lorner Hodgekinson Sunshine Home for disabled adults in Sydney.

Dr. Lo has worked in area of intellectual disabilities for 30 years. In the past, she had been involved in educating medical students, general practitioners, TESOL in Sydney and China as well as conducting medical workshops ondevelopmental paediatrics in China. Most recently, she was an invited speaker at the Institute of Education Hong Kong.

Dr Lo has a special interest in specific language impairment in children with developmental disorders. She also has an interest and experience incross-cultural communication between clinicians and families with disabled children.

Lorraine has been working for SIDS and Kids for the past 8 years as Educator & Bereavement Support Worker. The role has taken her to many of the Health Facilities and Hospitals & Government Agencies throughout NSW and Australia.

Vera was born in Hong Kong. Her mother tongue is Cantonese and also speaks Mandarin. She was trained as a registered nurse in Hong Kong and as a midwife in the UK.

Vera is a Credentialled Diabetes Educator and has been working as a Clinical Nurse Consultant in Blacktown / Mt Druitt Diabetes Service since 2000. She mainly works in the Outpatient Diabetes Education Centre and the Diabetes In Pregnancy Clinic.

Vera formed the first Blacktown/ Mt Druitt Chinese Diabetes Support Group together with the BMDH Multicultural Health worker and co-ordinated the group program for 10 years. She has presented in seminars, community television and local Chinese radio channels. She had also presented in national conferences on the Chinese Support Group and Postnatal education targeting CALD women in a low social-economic area.

Elizabeth is a massage therapist specialises in prenatal massage , she is also a naturopath and works with women in different stages of their lives.

Elizabeth has a Bachelor of Naturopathy , Diploma of Remedial Massage and Diploma of Pharmacy form Zimbabwe. She is currently working on a PostGraduate Diploma in International Health.

She has a clinical Naturopathic practice in Baulkham Hills, where she works with other health practitioners to help women in prenatal care.

Elizabeth is passionate about women’s health in particular during pregnancy. She also educates migrant women on complimentary medicine , the pros and cons , when to use it and when it is not suitable , it limitations and what it can achieve for them.She believes in helping people making informed decisions.

Jacqueline Gillan is a Clinical Midwifery Consultant, Antenatal Education at Westmead Hospital. Jacqueline has worked in the public and private sectors of midwifery and childbirth education since 1992. At Westmead, Jacqueline leads a team of 16 childbirth educators, facilitates training through theChildbirth Education Learning Package and is a past president of the Childbirth and Parenting Educators Association (CAPEA). Jacqueline also works with the Maternity Liaison Team, which delivers antenatal education to a diverse and emerging CALD community at Westmead Hospital.

Julie Stevenson is a registered nurse and midwife and has 18 years experience working in Community Health as a Generalist and a Child and Family Health Nurse, currently working as a Clinical Nurse Consultant (Child and Family Health).

Julie has a Graduate Certificate in Child and Family Health Nursing and is an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant, a trained Clinical Supervision and Family Partnership Core Training Facilitator.

Julie is currently undertaking Masters in Child and Family Health Nursing at UWS.

Ayda Succarie is a PhD candidate at the University of Western Sydney. Her doctoral research is in the area of governance and leadership. She is currently a Lecturer and an academic assistant at the School of Business for UWS. Ayda has also conducted research in the area of Corporate Social Responsibility with local businesses and council's within Western Sydney. She has worked in the Independent schools sector for over 10 years in the area of Business Manage-ment and administration and has provided consultation and training to a number of not-for-profit organisations in the area of business and administration. Ayda is a proud mother of four wonderful young ladies. Her aim in life is to be the best example for her children in every way possible and assist them in achieving their dreams. Rachel Coppell

Sarah has worked as a Nurse and Midwife in a variety of hospital and community settings over the past 25 years. She developed an interest in Cross CulturalMedicine working in the Torres Straight, Utopia in Central Australia and in Arnhem Land.

Sarah is currently working as a Midwife at Westmead Hospital primarily in the Midwifery@Home program. She is the Chief Investigator for the current research project at Westmead Hospital “Maternity Cross Cultural VTE (venousthromboembolism) Prevention Project.”

Rachel has a degree in Education attained from Massey University in New Zealand. She has experience teaching in a range of early childhood settings including long day childcare centres, community preschools and in early intervention services.

Rachel is currently managing a family centred early intervention program called Early Childhood Links, which has a focus on supporting families to access, participate in and be included in their community.

Rachel is familiar with the challenges that CALD families face when enrolling their child with additional needs into care and education services. The program she manages is dedicated to supporting the partnership between families and community settings for the successful inclusion of children with a disability.

She is an overseas trained Midwife before migrating to Australia. My working experience incorporated driving a community health training program for health workers/ traditional birth attendants, and Midwives. The overall aim was to control infection and its impact on mortality rates for maternal and newborn.

Presently employed as a Maternity Liaison Officer, at Women’s Health Clinic, Westmead hospital working with culturally and linguistically DiverseBackground (CALD) women to educate, support and giving them information regarding childbirth and parenting education

Her other compelling job is engaging in joining Rotary club and collaborating with Rotary Australia World Community Services working voluntarily overseas and in Australia.

Tina has worked in the Early Education sector for over 20 years. She has had experience teaching in a variety of early education settings and has degree in Education and a postgraduate diploma in Psychology. Tina is passionate about supporting families to access, participate and be included in their community.

Tina is currently the SDN Community Leader supporting the Cumberland Pros-pect Community which provides a variety of Services to support children and families. These include Early Childhood Links, Child & Family Resource Centre, Inclusion Support Agencies, PlayLinks and SDN Ngallia Children Education and Care Centre.

Tina is dedicated to supporting her team develop partnerships with families and the community settings to make transitions easier for CALD families and maintain the successful inclusion of children with a disability.

She is a very experienced Child & Family Health Nurse and is a Clinical Nurse Specialist in the discipline. Alison has been part of the team providing first home visits to new families for many years and, being based at Merrylands, hasprovided care for mothers from many different cultures.

Michelle has been a midwife since 1995. Trained and worked in the UK, where she eventually became an advanced midwife practitioner, before moving to Australia in 2009. Worked as a midwife at the RPA in the birth centre and labour ward before moving to Westmead hospital to become a consultant midwife.
