Assalammualaikum warahmatullahu wabarakatuh and Salam Sejahtera.

Dear respected dental colleagues and beloved members of Malaysian Endodontic Society,

I would like to take this opportunity to say thank you for your trust and support in our committee members in ensuring the suc-

cess of our society. I am blessed to be surrounded by a group of energetic and hard working committee members to ensure that

our yearly events is a reality.

It is indeed a great pleasure to host the first MES-UiTM Joint Event 2017 and we look forward to even a more fruitful collabora-

tions with other universities in the future.

In this meeting, we have lined up an exciting scientific programme while introducing our own local speakers in different sectors;

government, academia and private sectors. These speakers are experts in the fields of endodontics and restoration. We hope

this meeting will serve as a platform to nurture our own world-renowned speakers in their fields and for our participants to learn

and exchange ideas on the latest developments in endodontics.

The highlight of this event is to have Dr Cliff Ruddle as our keynote speaker. Dr Cliff Ruddle is consider a ‘superstar’ in endodon-

tics. We also arranged a pre-congress workshops, which will be conducted to provide our delegates with hands-on experience

on the latest rotary instrumentation techniques.

This event would not been possible without the strong support in sponsorship of our vendors in endodontics and dental suppli-

ers. They will also display their latest equipment’s and material in the trade exhibition. Please take a visit to their booth and you

may find what you are looking for. We would like to take this opportunity to thank them for their continuous contribution and sup-

port to MES yearly event.

Lastly, we would like to extend our grateful thank you for all the delegates for your participation and continuous support. We wish

you a pleasant and rewarding meeting. Hope to see you here.

Best wishes, Dr Afzan Adilah Ayoub President Malaysian Endodontic Society (2016-2017)

Dr. Clifford J. Ruddle is Founder and Director of Advanced Endodontics, an international educational source, in Santa Barbara, Cali-fornia. Additionally, he maintains teaching positions at various dental schools, is a Fellow in both the American and International Colleges of Dentistry, and has authored numerous articles and chapters for leading textbooks. As an inventor, Dr. Ruddle has de-signed and developed several instruments and devices that are widely used internationally. He is best known for providing superb education through his lectures, instructional DVDs, and "ONE-ON-ONE" training courses in Santa Barbara, California. To learn more about Dr. Ruddle, visit www.endoruddle.com. Topic 1 : Retreatment (TBC)

Lecture synopsis: There has been massive growth in endodontic treatment in recent years. This increase in clinical activity can be attributable to better-trained dentists and specialists alike. Necessary for this unfolding story is the general public's growing selection for root canal treatment as an alternative to the extraction.. Over time, patients have become more confident selecting endodontic treatment because of the changing perception that pain can be managed, techniques have improved and success is achievable. During the last decade, significant procedural refinements have created greater promise for our profession to fulfill the public’s grow-ing expectations for longterm success. This lecture will focus on the concepts, strategies, and techniques that will produce success-ful results in nonsurgical endodontic retreatment

Topic 2 : Management of procedural errors (TBC)

Lecture synopsis: Every clinician who has performed endodontics has experienced a variety of emotions ranging from the thrill-of-the-fill to an upset like the procedural accident of breaking an instrument. When removing a broken instrument, the first option is to utilize piezoelectric ultrasonic technology and specific ultrasonic instruments. Dr Ruddle will share his expertise in discussing the factors of removal, establishing safe radicular access by using ultrasonic.

Workshop Topic : Wave One Gold Rotary Instrumentation (TBC)

Lecture synopsis: The WAVEONE GOLD system is a single-file and single-use technique. Through the convergence of an ad-vanced design, Gold-wire technology, and a unique reciprocating movement, preparing canals is now safer, easier and faster.

Dr. Teng-Kai Ong received his BDS degree from University of Malaya in 2008. He completed the Endodontic Residency pro-gram at University of Pennsylvania, USA in 2013 and received both the best Preclinical and Clinical Teaching Awards for the Predoctoral Endodontic Program, and also the Outstanding Teaching Awards in Microendodontics & Endodontics Microsurgery. He is currently maintains a private practice limited to endodontics in Kuala Lumpur and serves as a Part-Time Clinical Instructor at Faculty of Dentistry, University of Malaya. Dr. Ong was awarded his Fellowship in the Royal College of Dentist of Canada, FRCD(C) in the specialty of Endodontics in 2014 and he earned the Diplomate status from the American Board of Endodontics in 2015. He is currently the committee member of the editorial board of Malaysian Dental Journal (MDJ) and the member of American Association of Endodontists and International Association of Dental Traumatology.

Topic: Endodontic Microsurgery: What Do We Need to Know About It?

Lecture synopsis:

Surgical endodontics was once given a bad name because of its unpredictable clinical success. Those days, many of which, the procedure was done without understanding the biological principle of the procedure and therefore, marginalized this treatment method. However, with the advent of microsurgical methods by using microscope, ultrasonic devices and new filling materials, the modern surgical approach can predictably achieve >90% of the success rate. In this lecture, based on the existing research, we will discuss how to execute endodontic microsurgery to achieve the desired outcome. At the conclusion, participants should be able to properly plan for the microsurgery and also understand the materials, instruments and techniques used during micro-surgery procedures.

Dr. Huwaina completed her dental education from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia and post graduate qualifications from the Uni-versity of Hong Kong in 2011. She worked in Hospital Universiti Sains Malaysia (HUSM) before becoming an academician and an endodontist in School of Dental Sciences Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM). Her field of interest mainly focusing in clinical manage-ment of complicated endodontic, dental stem cell and endodontic regeneration. Currently, she is the secretary of Malaysian Endo-dontic Society (MES).

Lecture topic: Regenerative endodontics-changes, chances & challenges Regenerative endodontic have become part of the endodontic treatment spectrum. The conventional treatment for imma-

ture permanent teeth after pulp necrosis is an apexification procedure, which aims at generating a calcified barrier at the apex of the tooth. In contrast, a regenerative endodontic procedure opens the possibility of completion of root formation, which strength-ens the root canal walls, and furthermore the regeneration of vital pulp tissue and potentially sensibility as indicated by positive response to cold or electric pulp test after 12 – 24 months (Banchs & Trope 2004, Ding et al. 2009, Petrino et al. 2010, Miller et al. 2012).

Thus, a regenerative endodontic procedure can be considered a more biology-based treatment approach. However, evi-dence of randomized controlled clinical trials is still missing and it has been suggested that a regenerative endodontic procedure should only be considered if conventional treatment options fail does not represent a responsible position regarding the best pos-sible outcome and benefit for the patients. For now, clinicians have to rely on a lower level of evidence represented by available case reports and case series. This presentation will review the regenerative endodontic focussing on the clinical protocol, and its advantages and drawbacks.

Dr Sofia obtained her Bachelor in Dental Surgery in 2002. In 2012, she completed her specialist training in the University of Ma-laya. She is currently serving as a Restorative Dental Specialist in the Ministry of Health, Malaysia. She is holding the post as the head of Restorative Dental Specialty in the state of Negeri Sembilan. Lecture topic: Restoration for Endodontically Treated Teeth. The best plan for success is to begin with the end in mind. Prior to any endodontic treatment initiation, the tooth should be care-fully assessed for restorability, occlusal function and periodontal health. Issues such as biological width and crown-to-root ratio should be evaluated. If these factors are deemed satisfactory, the tooth can be included in the comprehensive treatment plan. But what happened after the root canal treatment is completed? Special features of the endodontically treated teeth, restorat ive material considerations and treatment options will be discussed in this lecture.
